  • Advice on new hardware firewall for a small company server-environment

    Hi everyone, My companies currently hardware firewall (an old ZyXEL ZyWALL firewall) and is indeed requiring an update to a new firewall. It is a small company with a similar small server-environment, so the need for a huge, complex and expensive solution isn’t there but a more “straight-forward” firewall, that can provide the necessary security to our systems and block unwanted elements from the core server and only accept access through our one server which is used as an “gateway” between the Internet and our internal network. I haven’t that much experience with hardware firewalls so I’m requesting any good advice and/or knowledge on which products will be suited for our specific need.   • Not able to login to new AMI on EC2 - moveing from micro to small instance

    I had a t1.micro instance (old_server) on Linux on EC2 and now I need to upgrade my server to m1.small Linux (new_server). So, here is what I did: Shutdown old_server and create an AMI. Launch the new AMI with m1.small configuration. (I kept the key and security group same as old_server) I tried to login by: ssh -i my_key.pem [email protected] But, it gives a connection timeout error. My login to old_server works fine. So, my question is: What is the correct way to scale up (vertically) an EC2 instance? Where am I going wrong in the above mentioned step? When I create an AMI in step 1, is the EBS (data) also copied.

  • Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

    Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!

  • Does OOP make sense for small scripts?

    I mostly write small scripts in python, about 50 - 250 lines of code. I usually don't use any objects, just straightforward procedural programming. I know OOP basics and I have used object in other programming languages before, but for small scripts I don't see how objects would improve them. But maybe that is just my limited experience with OOP. Am I missing something by not trying harder to use objects, or does OOP just not make a lot of sense for small scripts?

  • Hadoop Rolling Small files

    I am running Hadoop on a project and need a suggestion. Generally by default Hadoop has a "block size" of around 64mb.. There is also a suggestion to not use many/small files.. I am currently having very very very small files being put into HDFS due to the application design of flume.. The problem is, that Hadoop <= 0.20 cannot append to files, whereby i have too many files for my map-reduce to function efficiently.. There must be a correct way to simply roll/merge roughly 100 files into one.. Therefore Hadoop is effectively reading 1 large file instead of 10 Any Suggestions??

    I worked at a place last year that had a very small image for Windows XP re-builds. It was two Norton GHO files, totalling about 2-3 GB. This is how it worked: Boot into Norton Ghost Map to the network share where the images lived Apply the image to the workstation Reboot It would then load into Windows Setup Enter the Domain Admin credentials so it can join the domain That's it... it would then reboot into Windows and the image was complete. How did they make an image so small? Did they perhaps kick off a Windows install and create an image then? I particularly liked how it required no user input other than a domain admin login.

    Hi, I'm wondering what type of threshold would work well for distinguishing features that are very small (small in the xy sense) in comparison with the full spread, if that makes sense. The graythresh() function in Matlab that uses the Otsu method doesn't work too well for my data. Otsu is a clustering method where I think the # of pixels should be similar in each class, which is not the case for me so when I employ it I get a threshold that is way too small and falls well within a lot of the background noise that remains even after filtering.

Having pretty common starting point: FreeBSD jail (remote/headless) for the company: public web, email, ftp server, and private (maybe in the future partially public) wiki (foswiki) 4 physical persons, (6 email addresses) + one admin - others will never use ssh) have already done usual hardening on the host side (like pf, sshguard etc). my major components are: dovecot, exim, apache22, proftpd, perl5.14. Looking for an checklist, what I shouldn't forget. My plan: openssl self-signed certificates for exim, dovecot and proftpd (wildcard keys) openssl self-signed certificate for apache (later will go for "trusted-signed" key) My questions are: is is an "good practice" having one pair of wildcard SSL-certificates for many programs? (exim, dovecot, proftpd) - or should I generate one key for each service? should I add all 4 persons as standard (unix) users, or I should go with virtual users? Asking because: have only small count of users, and it is more simple to configure everything (exim, dovecot) for local users ($HOME/Maildir), plus ability to set $HOME/.forward/vacation and etc. is here some (special) things what I should consider? (e.g. maybe, in the future we want setup our own webmail - will make this any difference?) any other recommendation?   • Choosing gateway router/firewall for small datacenter network [closed]

    I'm choosing a gateway router/firewall for small internal network for medium-sized web service. Currently there are 5 servers in internal network, up to 50 http(s) requests/second, up to 1000 simultaneous connections, uplink is 100 Mbit. So, network is relatively small and not very busy and we don't like to buy some pricey monster like cisco or jupiper for this site. Instead we'd like to buy two affordable devices (one for spare), which can handle our workload now and some time in future (it might be up to 2x more in 1 year). I had some experience with Sonicwall NSA, but it seems to be too complex for this site (we don't need most of its features) and even too pricey when buying two of them. So, after some research I've come up with following options: Netgear Prosecure UTM Series (probably UTM25) Zyxel ZyWall Series (USG100 or USG200) Sonicwall TZ 210 Is this a good idea? All of the above seems to be more office products, not datacenter ones. Or we should stick with Sonicwall NSA? Does anyone have any hands-on experience with this models? Maybe some other advices?     Hi, I own a small software development company that developes Web software to other small and medium companies in Chile. The business process is very complex and it is hard to stablish where to put the efforts to make our company better, more efficient, and give better solutions. I'm also a TI master's degree student and i'm making a paper about this subject, so any help would be great to help my company and my paper. I have considered 3 areas for the problems: 1) Software development problems 2) Web development problems 3) Small and Medium companies problems I don't know about you, but at least this "business formula" in Chile has not received very much support but it is getting better, but today my company is far from being self-sufficient. I am currently getting a report back with all the email, flaws, memory usage but nothing on web usage.     Following a suggestion made before, I'm trying to use UNetbootin to install Damn Small Linux on a Windows computer. I'd like to reformat the entire HD and install Linux on it. I installed UNetbootin on Windows, set it for a frugal install on the HD, rebooted, started it up in UNetbootin. It seemed to be working ok. However, the installation keeps hanging on "Scanning for Harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab". What might be the problem?

    I have a windows server 2008 R2 standard edition. The system suddenly stopped accepting remote desktop connections. When I tried to connect directly to the console, I am unable to start any applications. I got errors "The page file is to small to complete the action". Under takmanager in performance the system shows "Commit(GB) 127/127". What does this imply? The system has 32 GB ram, 5 raid disks each 150 Gb

    I have a client who is using Windows Server 2008 (Small Business Server), and using Windows Backup. What I need to do is configure the backup task so that, upon completion, it sends an email notifying the client of backup success or failure. I have been able to find that task in task scheduler, and even see where I can send an email...but I cannot find a way to make the content of the email different based on success or failure of the backup. How might I do this?

    I've got an old powerbook g4. Battery is totally dead, as is the superdrive. I've looked into selling but it's worth less than it would cost to ship it safely. So I'm considering cracking it open and and taking it's parts and creating some kind of small form factor desktop, probably for the living room. Occasionally the IT team need to access users documents in order to merge folders together (Due to staff leaving) or need to access documents that have been lost. Even though we are logged in as the Administrator, we are unable to access users documents. Is there any way to modify the settings for all users, that will enable us to access users documents? I want to replace the hotlinked images with one huge image (several megs in size) and serve that to them instead.     I'm having strange problem with my putty console. I'm establishing connection over ssh to my home computer [ windows 7 + freesshd server ]. Everything works just fine, but I'm getting this tiny screen with output, I can resize it of course, but the content is still in small box [ content doesn't resize ] I've tried to change the number of columns and rows in properties, but it didn't change anything. The same thing is with cygwin client.
