• choosing an image locally from http url and serving that image without a server round trip

  Hi folks I am a complete novice to Flash (never created anything in flash). I am quite familiar with web applications (J2EE based) and have a reasonable expertise in Javascript. Here is my requirement. I want the user to select (via an html form) an image. Normally in the post, this image would be sent to server and may be stored there to be served later. I do not want that. I want to store this image locally and then serve it via HTTP to the user. So, the flow is: 1. Go to the "select image url":mywebsite.com/selectImage Browse the image and select the image This would transfer control locally to some code running on the client (Javascript or flash), which would then store the image locally at some place on the client machine. Go to the "show image url": mywebsite.com/showImage This would eventually result in some client code running on the browser that retrieves the image and renders it (without any server round trips.) I considered the following options: Use HTML5 local storage. Since I am a complete novice to flash, I looked into this. I found that it is fairly straightforward to store and retrieve images in javascript (only strings are allowed but I am hoping storing base64 encoded strings would work at least for small images). However, how do I serve the image via http url that points to my server without a server round trip? I saw the interesting article at http://hacks.mozilla.org/category/fileapi/ but that would work only in firefox and I need to work on all latest browsers (at least the ones supporting HTML5 local storage) Use flash SharedObjects. OK, this would have been good - the only thing is I am not sure where to start. Snippets of actionscripts to do this are scattered everywhere but I do not know how to use those scripts in an actual html page:) I do not need to create any movies or anything - just need to store an image and serve it locally. If I go this route, I would also use it to store other "strings" locally. If you suggest this, please give me the exact steps (could be pointers to other web sites) on how to do this.   I have an iPhone app that searches a folder, collates an an array of all the audio files, and lets them be played back. The problem is that if there is a subfolder within the folder I am searching, it will just skip over it/not go into its contents. I am using C# and .Net in Blend and producing a web app (ie some of the normal .Net functions is not included in the silverlight plugin).   Hi, I was wondering, if I have text fields displayed so, could I alter the order in which the focus using javascript (preferably jQuery). See this example here. What I mean that when you tab around them, instead on going "one, two, three, four, five" force them to go: "one, two, four, three, five". Thanks in advance!! • Finding cities close to one another using longitude and latitude

  Each user in my db is associated to a city (with it's longitude and latitude) How would I go about finding out which cities are close to one another? i.e. in England, Cambridge is fairly close to London. So If I have a user who lives in Cambridge. Users close to them would be users living in close surrounding cities, such as London, Hertford etc. Any ideas how I could go about this? And also, how would I define what is close? i.e. in the UK close would be much closer than if it were in the US as the US is far more spread out. Ideas and suggestions. Also, do you know any services that provide this sort of functionality? Thanks

• Rails architecture questions

  I'm building a Rails site that, among other things, allows users to build their own recipe repository. Recipes are entered either manually or via a link to another site (think epicurious, cooks.com, etc). I'm writing scripts that will scrape a recipe from these sites given a link from a user, and so far (legal issues notwithstanding) that part isn't giving me any trouble. However, I'm not sure where to put the code that I'm writing for these scraper scripts. My first thought was to put it in the recipes model, but it seems a bit too involved to go there; would a library or a helper be more appropriate? Also, as I mentioned, I'm building several different scrapers for different food websites. It seems to me that the elegant way to do this would be to define an interface (or abstract base class) that determines a set of methods for constructing a recipe object given a link, but I'm not sure what the best approach would be here, either. How might I build out these OO relationships, and where should the code go?

Lets say i have a db that looks something like the following: Issue Table Id | Details | CreateDate | ClosedDate Issue Notes Table Id | ObjectId | Notes | NoteDate Issue Assignment Table Id | ObjectId | AssignedToId| AssignedDate I'd like allow the linking of an issue to another issue. I thought about adding a column to the Issue table called ParentIssueId and that would allow me the ability to link issues, but i foresee circular references occurring within the issue table if i go through with this implementation. Is there a better way to go about doing this, and if so, how? Thanks

• Suggested C++ books?

  Ok, I've had one semester of C++ and will be taking a second semester in it after I have taken a Data Structure class this fall. In the first class, we dealt mainly with C++ syntax and the textbook we used was ok, but now I'm wanting to go ahead and purchase a great C++ book that encompasses a lot of the programming concepts used today. I'm learning Objective-C on my own and was able to get through the whole object-oriented stuff pretty easily, along with other things like pointers, inheritance, delegation, etc. It doesn't have to exactly have EVERYTHING in it, but I do want to buy the book with the most information in it. Money is no problem. So my question is what book did you use or still use for C++? Is it a book that you can reference back to if you ever forget how to do something small, or would you have to go online and find the answer.

• Restore history and current page on resuming webview

  I have a webview that I use to navigate from page to page. I have implemented go back and go forward. My problem is that when I return to the webview after visiting another activity, the history is lost i.e. the webview starts again on the first page. How do I code it so that after I call finish on the webview to swap to another activity on returning to the webview, the WebBackForwardList is restored and I am taken to the page I was on when I left the webview? I have tried overriding onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState using webview.save/restoreState(bundle) but with no success. I have achieved returning to the last page by saving the last url in preferences, but have been unable to restore the entire history.

• GoogleMaps API v3 - Need help with two "click" event scenarios. Need similar functionality to v2 AP

  In version 2 of the API the map click event returned an Overlay, LatLng, Overlaylatlng. I used this to create a generic map event that would either retrieve the coordinates of the Map click event, or return the coordinates of a Marker or other type of Overlay. Now that API v3 doesn't return the Overlay or Overlaylatlng during the map click event, how can I go about creating a generic "click" event for the map that works if the user clicks on a marker or overlay? I really don't want to create a click event for each marker I have on my page as I am creating anywhere from a handful to a couple thousand markers. Also, I had to create a custom ImageMapType in order to display the StreetViewOverlay like we could do in v2 of the API because I couldn't find anywhere that told me how to add the StreetViewOverlay without the pegman icon. How can I go about retrieving the LatLng coordinates of a click on this overlay type as well?

• Temporary files & folders on Windows

  Emulating multithreading by loading a DLL multiple times (it's designed for this). Since LoadLibrary() doesn't really allow it, the DLL copies itself into a temporary file, via GetTempPath() and GetTempFileName(). It's a small file and upon thread destruction it frees the library and deletes the temporary file. Problem now is that the number of threads is configurable (maniacs can pick 50, 100, more) which basically exposes the risk of running unstable, crash and not go through the usual "delete temporary files" routine. Is it okay if I just leave those temporary files to die there? Does the OS usually clean the up by itself? Or should I write an autocleanup routine? If yes, how can I go about saving another temporary file to hold a list with those files, and not hit UAC restrictions or otherwise? Any ideas?

Each UrlMapper have own semantic and binding scheme. Rails alike scheme simply doesn't work (unless you implement it yourself). And my question is: are there any more convenient ways to address controller from JSP in Spring?

• How to color a mesh with values at the vertices in WPF 3D?

  We've got a sphere which we want to display in 3D and color given a fuction that depends on spherical coordinates. The sphere was triangulated using a regular grid in (theta, phi), but this produced a lot of small triangles near the poles. In an attempt to reduce the number triangles at the poles, we've changed out mesh generation to produce more evenly sized triangles over the surface. The first triangulation method had the advantage that we could easily create a texture and drape it over the surface. It seems that in WPF it isn't possible to assign colors to vertices the way one would go about in OpenGL or Direct3D. With the second triangulation method it isn't apparent how to go about generating the texture and setting the texture coordinates, since the vertices aren't aligned to a grid anymore. Maybe it would be possible to create a linear texture containing a color for each vertex, but then how will that effect the coloring? Will it still render smoothly over the triangle surfaces as one would expect by applying per vertex coloring?

• What's the deal with rubygems on Debian? It's different and strange.

  I've noticed at least the following oddities around rubygems on Debian (5.0 lenny in my case): Packages go into a different installation location: /var/lib/gems vs /usr/lib/ruby/gems The debian package is rubygems 1.3.6, and updating rubygems to the latest version (1.3.7) doesn't work: $ sudo gem update --system ERROR: While executing gem ... (RuntimeError) gem update --system is disabled on Debian. RubyGems can be updated using the official Debian repositories by aptitude or apt-get. Not all gems appear to work like they do on other systems. For instance, when installing Phusion Passenger, it did not detect the "rack" gem even though it was definitely installed. Manually installing rubygems using the source tarball and reinstalling all my gems (to /usr/lib/ruby/gems) made my problems go away. What's the deal? Why is debian's package different?

• How do I write a Photoshop Extension (8BX) plugin?

  The Adobe Photoshop CS3/4 SDk has a lot of examples for Filter, Import, Export etc plugins but I havent found anything that illustrates how to write a 8BX plugin. Reason I need to write one is to add a new drop down menu to the Photoshop root toolbar (where it displays File, Edit, Image .. Window. Help drop down menus). I have seen product like OneSoftware install an 8BX plugin into Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Extensions directory that causes PS to add adrop down menu for OneSoft. That suggest this is a solvable problem :-) I tried by changing an existing plugin in the SDlK samples but no go. Specifically i modified the resource file: resource 'PiPL' (ResourceID, plugInName " PiPL", purgeable) { { Kind { **Extension** }, Name { plugInName "..." }, ... Despite using the Extension Kind , PS never loads the plugin. It doesnt generate any compile time or load error either. Anyone has ideas on how to go about doing this ? Thanks

• Placeholder containing dynamic table is empty unless I create table twice

  I am dynamically creating a table that contains a textbox in each cell. The table is put in a placeholder control. Everything displays perfectly. The problem is when I go to retrieve the values entered in the cells. I have the code to generate the table in a separate method called CreateTable(). In order for my program to find a table in the placeholder when I go to save, I have to run CreateTable() in a postback event AND in the PageLoad event. If I call CreateTable() in only one of those places and I try to save, it says the placeholder is empty and, therefore, I cannot save the textbox contents. I've tried calling CreateTable() from InitLoad but that doesn't work because it needs to reference values from three static controls: 1 dropdown, 1 listbox, and 1 calendar control, which I don't believe have had their viewstate rendered yet. Anyone have any ideas? It would sure be nice not to have to double the number of database calls just to make this work.

Worse still, programming books usually go the same way. They might show a pattern or a style, but they often avoid showing good, complex code, and helping one go through it. Please give reason :) A bit of background : I have a strong background in C and I've played around with Cocoa so something iphone specific would be best ( but I'm open for suggestions ;)) Update I'm not looking for simple listings of iphone SDK related books, I can google that ;) I want books that people are reading/have read and would recomend :) Final Update I just ordered my copy of Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK. My main reasons on chosing it are that it's already in print (unlike the pragmatic one) and I looked at the preview on their website and I liked it.
