• Is the single <form runat="server">-element requirement really necessary for ASP.NET WebForms?

  Looking at some of the changes coming to WebForms in ASP.NET 4.0 I can see many improvements that give developers even more control over the output. Some of these improvement have been a long time coming, and for some time it seemed that it wasn't even possible. It made me wonder if the current model with the single form element that runs on the server is really the only possible way. Why couldn't the ASPNET WebForm architecture work with multiple forms that all run on the server? Imagine if you could architect this change. How would it impact the way we write codebehind today? Would it introduce extra complexity? Would it change the way event handlers work, or validation, or ASP.NET Ajax with the ScriptManager and UpdatePanel controls?

• Problem using FluentNHibernate, SQLite and Enums

  I have a Sharp Architecture based app using Fluent NHibernate with Automapping. I have the following Enum: public enum Topics { AdditionSubtraction = 1, MultiplicationDivision = 2, DecimalsFractions = 3 } and the following Class: public class Strategy : BaseEntity { public virtual string Name { get; set; } public virtual Topics Topic { get; set; } public virtual IList Items { get; set; } } If I create an instance of the class thusly: Strategy s = new Strategy { Name = "Test", Topic = Topics.AdditionSubtraction }; it Saves correctly (thanks to this mapping convention: public class EnumConvention : IPropertyConvention, IPropertyConventionAcceptance { public void Apply(FluentNHibernate.Conventions.Instances.IPropertyInstance instance) { instance.CustomType(instance.Property.PropertyType); } public void Accept(FluentNHibernate.Conventions.AcceptanceCriteria.IAcceptanceCriteria criteria) { criteria.Expect(x = x.Property.PropertyType.IsEnum); } } However, upon retrieval, I get an error regarding an attempt to convert Int64 to Topics. This works fine in SQL Server. Any ideas for a workaround? Thanks.

• mysql gem for snow leopard

  I had trouble with the gem at first but got it to work when I installed the 64-bit MySQL and reinsatlled the gem with arch flags. So it work in rails. The error I used to get was uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes but that is now gone :) However in Xcode when I run a RubyCocoa project I still get the old error of uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes Does anyone know why this may be? Is it because the gdb is 64-bit? How can it work in Rails but not in RubyCocoa? A little debugging shows that it fails to load mysql_api.bundle /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.8.1/lib/mysql_api.bundle: dlopen(/Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.8.1/lib/mysql_api.bundle, 9): no suitable image found. Did find: (LoadError) /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.8.1/lib/mysql_api.bundle: mach-o, but wrong architecture - /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.8.1/lib/mysql_api.bundle from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require'

• optimal memory layout for read-only/write memory segments.

  hello. Suppose I have two memory segments (equal size each, approximately 1kb in size) , one is read-only (after initialization), and other is read/write. what is the best layout in memory for such segments in terms of memory performance? one allocation, contiguous segments or two allocations (in general not contiguous). my primary architecture is linux Intel 64-bit. my feeling is former (cache friendlier) case is better. is there circumstances, where second layout is preferred? • Netbeans Editor Library?

  Netbeans seems to say in several places that it supports a library to just host the "Netbeans editor" widget in some other program. It has some weird documentation that seems to say a lot, but doesn't really say much about how to use it: http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/org-netbeans-modules-editor-lib2/architecture-summary.html I can't seem to find any download for the "Netbeans editor library" (1 or 2), and the documentation they provide says to download the entire mercurial repository, which doesn't really help me, since it doesn't tell me what is part of this "library" and what is not. If someone could point me to a download for this library, or some minimal documentation about how to use it, that would be great. I've already seen the blog post here, but it doesn't really help with getting the library, and it seems to be talking about classes which I can't find in the Netbeans sources I downloaded (Maybe a different version?)

• ::LookupAccountSid API Extremely Slow When Targetting x64 Platform (Windows 7)

  During our application startup, we are making a call to ::LookupAccountSid(). When I build targetting the x86 architecture, this call is nearly instantaneous. However, when I target x64 (debug or release), the call generally takes over 40s to complete. Since this is occurring during application startup, the result is fairly unpleasant as it will appear to the user that the application is not launching. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 (Intel Core i7 Q 720). Our application is a native Windows application written in C++.   I'm writing a multiuser application (.NET - C#) in which each user's data is separated from the others and there is no data that's common between users. It's critical to ensure that no user has access to another user's data. What are some approaches for implementing security at the database level and/or in the application architecture to to accomplish this? For example (and this is totally made up - I'm not suggesting it's a good or bad approach) including a userID column in all data tables might be an approach. I'm developing the app in C# (asp.net) and SQL Server 2008. I'm looking for options that are are either native in the tools I'm using or general patterns.

• TypeInitilazationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture). • LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

  In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

• WxPython Incompatible With Snow Leopard?

  Hello all, Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now I can't run programs built with wxPython. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that Snow Leopard is 64-bit? Thanks!!

  Hi there. I'm trying to use XSL-stylesheets in order to transform some generated XML-data to HTML-output. The architecture that I'm using is as follows: [Client Side] Web-Browser = [Server Side: Glassfish v3] JSP-pages - Web-Services. My web service generates some XML-data, then I want to format it with XSL-stylesheet, pass the result to JSP-page and show to user. I'm using JAXP for XSL-transformations and I want to create a javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamSource object with XSL-file stream for the javax.xml.transform.Transformer object, but I'm having a difficulty with specifying the path/URL for the XSL-file. So the question is: where should I put my XSL-stylesheets in a project and how should I access them from code? I'm using Glassfish v3 and NetBeans 6.8. Thanks.

• Can I use the CSS :visited pseudo class on 'wildcard' links?

  Let's say I have a site with multiple links as follows: www.example.com/product/1 www.example.com/product/2 www.example.com/product/3 I also append tracking info to links from time to time so that I can see how my site is being used, e.g, if somebody visits the products page from the product browser I would set a ref parameter: www.example.com/product/1&ref=pb www.example.com/product/2&ref=pb www.example.com/product/3&ref=pb The problem with this is that if the user visits a link of the first type and then views a link of the second type then the :visited pseudo class doesn't seem to apply because the browser only seems to match on exact URLs. Is there any way to have "wildcards" apply to links in this sense, so that when the user sees either the first type or the second type of link that it is highlighted? Note: I cannot change this "ref" architecture; it is inherited.

  Hi! I read something like this about db views: Views are incredibly powerful and useful for one reason that stands out above all the other very good reasons. They reduce code duplication. That is, in most cases, the bottom line. If a query will be used in three or more places, then a view will drastically simplify your changes if the schema or query parameters change. I once had to edit 22 stored procedures to change some query logic. If the original architecture had utilized views, then I would have had only three changes. Can anyone explain to me how it works, and maybe give me some examples? Best regards!

• Proxy calls across a DMZ

  We need to determine a quick way for our web application deployed in a DMZ to communicate to our SQL server that lives in the protected network. Only port 80 is open and available, and no direct SQL traffic is allowed across the firewall. So take the following simple system. A web page (default.aspx) makes a call (string GetData()) that resides in an assembly (Simple.DLL). GetData() uses ADO.NET to open a connection, execute a SQL call, retrieve the data, and return the data to the caller. However, since only port 80 is available and no SQL traffic is allowed, what could we do to accomplish our goal? I believe a .NET remoting solution would work, and I have heard of an architecture where a remoting layer proxies the call from Simple.DLL in the DMZ to another Simple.DLL that runs on the protected side. The remoting layer handles the communication between the two DLL’s. Can someone shed some light on how WCF/remoting can help us and how to get started with a solution?

• How to make scrolling through images as fast as Apple's Photos app

  The Goal — On an iPhone, to browse through several hundred locally-stored jpgs using a UIScrollView. The Problem — Like many others before me, I've tried implementing a scroll view based on Apple's Page Control sample code and found it lacking. The biggest issue I'm currently up against is that the sample code's architecture doesn't seem to scale. With just a few images loaded from disk, everything's fine. Once the number of images gets into the dozens, though, scrolling suffers terribly: the scrollview stutters mid-scroll with each new swipe. The only code I've toyed with that comes even close to being reasonably responsive is Three20, but even there the performance doesn't hold a candle to Photos. For now, I'm just using Three20, but a faster, custom solution would definitely be preferable.

• How can I save an NSDocument concurrently?

  I have a document based application. Saving the document can take a few seconds, so I want to enable the user to continue using the program while it saves the document in the background. Due to the document architecture, my application is asked to save to a temporary location and that temporary file is then copied over the old file. However, this means that I can not just run my file saving code in the background and return way before it is done, since the temporary file has to be written completely before it can be copied. Is there a way to disable this temporary-file-behavior or otherwise enable file saving in the background?

  Hi, My application architecture looks like this. GWT in the UI layer - Calls GWT RPC service (servlets) - Looksup Spring Beans - Calls the DAO layer which is implemented in JPA (EclipseLink). I have successfully tested the application with GWT rpc services directly calling the JPA layer. But I am having trouble integrating spring into the mix. (Primary usage of Spring is transaction management). I tried googling, but could not find any good article on the topic. • What is the main purpose and sense to have staging server the same as production?

  Hi, In our company we have staging and production servers. I'm trying to have them in state 1:1 after latest release. We've got web application running on several host and many instances of it. The issue is that I am an advocate of having the same architecture (structure) of web applications on staging and production servers to easily test new features and avoid creating of new bugs with new releases. But not everyone agree with me, and for them is not a such big deal to have different connection between staging application instances. Even maybe to have more application and connections between application on staging than on production server. I would like to ask about pros and cons of such an approach? I mean some good points to agree with me, or some bad why maybe i don't have right. Some examples of consequences and so forth.

  Hi, Context : I would like to create WCF Service that can be consumed by an ASP.NET web app and an iphone application. My goal : Create an SOA architecture. My problem : How "keep the user connected" on the WCF service? I tried asp.net membership provider with wcf and that works fine. But the problem is that I have to give username/password for each call. What can I do to resolve this problem? What's the best way to solve this kind of problem?
