• MySQl - update field by counting data in other table

  There are two tables. One is users info "users", one is comments info "comments". I need to create new field "comments" in users table, that contains number of comments of that user. Table "comments" has "user" field with user's id of that comment. What is optimal way to count number of comments by every user? With php you should write script that selects every user and than count number of his comments and then update "comments" field. It is not hard for me, but boring. Is it possible to do it without php, only in MySQL?

• Dynamically formatting a string

  Before I wander off and roll my own I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to do the following sort of thing... Currently I am using MessageFormat to create some strings. I now have the requirement that some of those strings will have a variable number of arguments. For example (current code): MessageFormat.format("{0} OR {1}", array[0], array[1]); Now I need something like: // s will have "1 OR 2 OR 3" String s = format(new int[] { 1, 2, 3 }); and: // s will have "1 OR 2 OR 3 OR 4" String s = format(new int[] { 1, 2, 3, 4 }); There are a couple ways I can think of creating the format string, such as having 1 String per number of arguments (there is a finite number of them so this is practical, but seems bad), or build the string dynamically (there are a lot of them so this could be slow). Any other suggestions?

  I have several tables with some pretty standard data in each. Can somebody help me optimize them by telling me the best column types for this data. Whats beside them is what I have currently. Number (max length 7) --> MEDIUMINT(8) Unsigned Text (max length 30) --> VARCHAR(30) Text (max length 200) --> VARCHAR(200) Number (max length 4) --> SMALLINT(5) Unsigned Number (either 0 or 1) --> TINYINT(1) Unsigned Text (max length 500) --> TEXT Any suggestions?   I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

Can i get the output like below by using a query? I need the dates in one month to be columns and the value of the date columns will be values in the status column. The number of date records per studentID is the same its the number of dates in the attendanceDate filed that is unknown. studentID---------2010-03-17--------2010-03-19------2010-03-20 1004-----------------------------0----------------------0--------------------1 etc. This is for a creating a report so I need to do it in a query. Please help if you can.

• Combining javascripts into a single file

  Having read up recently on yahoo's web optimisation tips and using YSlow I've implemented a few of their ideas on one of my sites http://www.gwynfryncottages.com you can see the file here http://www.gwynfryncottages.com/js/gw-custom.js. While this technique seems to work perfectly on most occasions, and really does speed up the site, I do notice a significantly higher number of errors where the javascripts don't load or don't load completely while I'm working on the site so three questions:- is combining scripts this way a good idea at all in terms of reliablity? is there any way to measure the number of errors? is there any way to 'pre-load' the javascript or ensure that the number of loading errors is reduced?

• How many address fields would you use for a UK database?

  Address records are probably used in most database, but I've seen a number of slightly different sets of fields used to store them. The number of fields seems to vary from 3-7, and sometimes all fields are simple labelled address1..addressN, other times given specific meaning (town, city, etc). This is UK specific, though I'm open to comments about the rest of the world too. Here you need the first line of the address (actually just the number) and the post code to identify the address - everything else is mostly an added bonus. I'm currently favouring: Address 1 Address 2 Address 3 Town County Post Code We could add Country if we ever needed it (unlikely). What do you think? Is this too little, too much?

• Rounding floating-point numbers to 4 decimal points

  I have two decimal numbers. I want those number to be same upto 4 decimal points without rounding. If numbers are different I want 2nd number to be replaced by 1st. What if condition should I write? Eg, 1. num1 = 0.94618976 num2 = 0.94620239 If we round these numbers upto 4 decimal then we get 0.9462 same number, but I don't want to round these numbers. 2. num1 = 0.94620239 num2 = 0.94639125 The one way I found is take absolute difference of both numbers say diff and then check the value. My problem is of checking the range of diff. Thank You.

• Using jQuery to rapidly scroll through a countdown

  I have a webpage that displays the number 0, and when the user presses "start", the number should rapidly increasing until it reaches a target number (maybe 10,000 or so) a few seconds later. I'd like the numbers to scroll by as if they're on a slot machine wheel. I've managed to mostly hack something together using the ScrollTo plugin, but it's slow and choppy. It always stops briefly at certain divs along the way. Perhaps I'm using it wrong. Is there a better way to accomplish such an effect?

  Hello. In simplistic terms, a feature structure is an unordered list of attribute-value pairs. [number:sg, person:3 | _ ], which can be embedded: [cat:np, agr:[number:sg, person:3 | _ ] | _ ], can subindex stuff and share the value [number:[1], person:3 | _ ], where [1] is another feature structure (that is, it allows reentrancy). My question is: what data structure would people think this should be implemented with for later access to values, to perform unification between 2 fts, to "type" them, etc. There is a full book on this, but it's in lisp, which simplifies list handling. So, my choices are: a hash of lists, a list of lists, or a trie. What do people think about this?

• Javascript Regular expression to enforce 2 digits after decimal points

  I need to validate a text box where users are supposed to enter numeric values with 2 decimal places. I am validating the text in client side javascript. The validation will pass only if the number has precisely 2 decimal places, and there is at least 1 digit before the decimal point. (could be zero) the number before the decimal point can be 0, but can not be multiple zeroes. like 00 or 000 The number before the decimal point can not begin with more than 1 zero. Example of Passed validation: 0.01 0.12 111.23 1234.56 012345.67 123.00 0.00 Example of failed validation .12 1.1 0.0 00.00 1234. 1234.567 1234 00123.45 abcd.12 12a4.56 1234.5A I have tried with [0-9][.][0-9][0-9]$ But it is allowing alphabets before decimal point. like 12a4.56 Can anyone please fix the expression? thanks a lot in advance.

  When creating a record "grid" with custom paging what is the best/optimal way to query the total number of records as well as the records start-end using C#? Right now, I make two trips to the server: one for getting the records, and the other for counting the total number of records. What is/are the best way(s) to combine these queries to avoid multiple DB trips?

• Adding additional components to a web page after rendering by Wicket

  I have a requirement to create a web page using Wicket 1.5, which can present a variable number of panels to capture user input. All the panels have the same structure. The page would start off with one panel, and includes a button to dynamically add more as required. So the number of panels is unknown at the time the page is initially rendered. Effectively I'd be altering the structure of the page dynamically. This is possible in Javascript, using document.addElement() I've done a similar thing in the past by creating all the components on page load, and selectively showing/hiding components. The difference here is that the number of components (panels) is initially unknown. I'm unsure as to how this would be achieved with Wicket.

• Chaning coding style due to Android GC performance, how far is too far?

  I keep hearing that Android applications should try to limit the number of objects created in order to reduce the workload on the garbage collector. It makes sense that you may not want to created massive numbers of objects to track on a limited memory footprint, for example on a traditional server application created 100,000 objects within a few seconds would not be unheard of. The problem is how far should I take this? I've seen tons of examples of Android applications relying on static state in order supposedly "speed things up". Does increasing the number of instances that need to be garbage collected from dozens to hundreds really make that big of a difference? I can imagine changing my coding style to now created hundreds of thousands of objects like you might have on a full-blown Java-EE server but relying on a bunch of static state to (supposedly) reduce the number of objects to be garbage collected seems odd. How much is it really necessary to change your coding style in order to create performance Android apps?

  I'm working with a java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor to process a number of items in parallel. Although the threading itself works fine, at times we've run into other resource constraints due to actions happening in the threads, which made us want to dial down the number of Threads in the pool. I'd like to know if there's a way to dial down the number of the threads while the threads area actually working. I know that you can call setMaximumPoolSize() and/or setCorePoolSize(), but these only resize the pool once threads become idle, but they don't become idle until there are no tasks waiting in the queue.

  Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach?   I have an object that points in the direction of another object (i.e. it rotates to the direction that the second objects x and y coordinates are at) below is the code I use. var distx = target.x - x; var disty = target.y - y; var angle:Number = Math.atan2(disty, distx); var vx:Number = Math.cos(angle) * cspeed; var vy:Number = Math.sin(angle) * cspeed; rotation = angle * 180/Math.PI; x += vx; y += vy; as you can see. Not only does it rotate towards the target object, but it also moves towards it too. When I play the movie, the object instantly points to the targeted object and moves towards it. I would like for it to slowly turn towards the object instead of instantly turning towards it. anyone know how to do this.

So far, I have tried this using cut() and am trying to extract the limits from levels. I have a list of levels, from which I would like to extract the second number from each level. How can I extract the values between space and ] (which is the number I'm interested in)? • Counting divs for pagination in Jquery

  I want to create a nice pagination in Jquery for a number of divs I have. EG: <div class="container"> <div id="one">content</div> <div id="two">content</div> <div id="three">content</div> <div id="four">content</div> </div> The number will not always be the same so I need to count the divs, and display a pagination like the one below. 1|2|3|4 Clicking on the page number would display the relevant div. I know how to show and hide elements using Jquery and css and have figured out I can count the divs using var numPages = $('.container').size(); but I can't work out how I can display the pagination. Any pointers?

• XCode: compiling doesn't always replace plist?

  I have an application and I will sometimes just change the plist, say to change the version number. Sometimes I'll actually make a change to the code, AND the version number....in the latter case, SOMETIMES the version number of the resulting app will change, in the former it will never change. The only way I've found that surely does it right is when I delete the .app before compiling. In case it matters, the resulting app is being put in a folder that isn't in the build folder, but I doubt that that's relevant. any thoughts?

Currently, I've found out the following: Sending/Interpreting AT commands Setting the APN/PIN/Network Registration/... These things were well-documented on many sites. But now I want to connect, and here the problems start: If I try to do a ATDT *99#, which should dial the *99# number, I get the message CONNECT. But what do I need to do now? How do I tell windows to use the dial in network? Is the '*99#' even the number I should dial? (I think so, because it's the default dialing number in the Mobile Partner application, and on OS X on my 3G modem) I'm writing this program in C#. Thank you! Yvan

• hibernate not throwing stale state exception nor it is overwriting data

  Our application do the following. 1. Start the transaction. 2. Execute a query using prepared statement 3. Check a condition to see the number of rows updated are equal to the required number. 4. It commits on success of above condition otherwise it will roll back However the problem is that when two threads are simultaneously enter this code. Thread-1 is updating a row in step 2. It checked the condition and committed successfully since the condition is successful. Thread-2 started execution somewhere between steps 1 & 4, and it is failing on at condition checking at step 3 (as it is getting number of updated rows as 0). I expected second thread to throw an exception but it is not. What could be the problem?

• Limit on FileReference uploads?!

  Hello, I am currently uploading files in ActionScript 3 using the upload() method of the FileReference class. I built an uploader than can do simultaneous or parallel uploads, having a variable set the number of maximum uploads at a time. I noticed that for Internet Explorer I could be uploading 10 or more files simultaneously, but FireFox and Safari seems to cap the number of uploads to 2. That is, when I call the upload method on per say, 3 files, only 2 will get events back (such as ProgressEvent.PROGRESS). Only when one of the 2 uploads finishes, then the 3rd one will start. This behavior does not happen for Internet Explorer. I have tried with a large number of files, and some big files, to make sure this behavior was consistent. I was wondering if anyone noticed this behavior please, and if so, what is the reason for this behavior please? I appreciate your help, Thank you very much, Rudy

  The iPhone platform has a number of common gesture idioms. For example, there are taps, pinches, and swipes, each with varying number of fingers. But when you're developing an app, it's up to you to implement these things based on low-level information about the number and locations of touches. It seems like this is a prime candidate for a library. You would register a delegate, set some parameters like multi-tap interval and swipe threshold, and get calls like swipeStarted/Ended, pinchStarted/Ended, multiTap, etc. Does such a library exist?
