  First off, I'd like to say that I'm already looking into the "Cutting Stock Problem" algorithm, however I feel that I need a bit more clarification, and possibly some help with some of the math (Not my strong point). What I need to do is have an offset pattern that causes the circle to fit in the crevasse created by having the two circular dies sitting next to each other on the previous line, like so: O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O I'm hoping someone can point me towards the right algorithm for this! • Activator.CreateInstance(string) and Activator.CreateInstance<T>() difference

  No, this is not a question about generics. I have a Factory pattern with several classes with internal constructors (I don't want them being instantiated if not through the factory). My problem is that CreateInstance fails with a "No parameterless constructor defined for this object" error unless I pass "true" on the non-public parameter. Example // Fails Activator.CreateInstance(type); // Works Activator.CreateInstance(type, true); I wanted to make the factory generic to make it a little simpler, like this: public class GenericFactory<T> where T : MyAbstractType { public static T GetInstance() { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } However, I was unable to find how to pass that "true" parameter for it to accept non-public constructors (internal). Did I miss something or it isn't possible?

• Can I add metadata to git commits? Or can I hide some tags in gitk

  I want to associate custom metadata with a git commit. Specifically to record a review ID from a code review but it could be anything. Tags seem a natural way to do that but I expect to have a review for every commit and I don't want to clutter gitk with tons of tags. Is there some other mechanism to add custom metadata? Can I make certain tags invisible? If I could tell gitk not to display tags matching some pattern or RE, that would likely work but I don't see a way to do that.

There are many books for modern languages (such as C++, Java) to study programming skills like the refactoring or pattern, software architecture. But no book is written with C language. The book author say that his/her book is not language-dependent, but I don't think so. How can I advance my programming skills? I have to study modern language and read the books? Are there books about software design or programming skill written with C?

• jQuery plugin .fn question

  Hello, I seem to be having some problems creating a jquery plugin. I am testing a simple plugin in firebug console and the function is not being defined as I would expect. Here is the code pattern I am using jQuery.fn.test = function () {console.log("runs")} I am trying to call the function with this call which is not working. $.test() But this call does $.fn.test() I don't think this is how it is supposed to work so I think I am doing something wrong, although all the documentation seems to agree that I should be correct. • bgiframe appears in front of jquery modal dialog's overlay in IE6

  When I look at jquery ui's demo modal dialog (http://jqueryui.com/demos/dialog/#modal) in IE6 the bgiframe is appearing on top of the background overlay. So instead of seeing a black/gray stripe pattern, there is just a white background covering the page with the word "false" in the upper left corner. Is bgiframe broken with the latest version of jqueryui? Is there a quick way to repair this problem with bgiframe? If not, is there a plugin that hides selects when a modal dialog is shown? The ie6 z-index issue with selects is the reason I was using bgiframe in the first place.

I have an ajax-based search that should just trigger the search when actual characters are pressed like a-Z (upper and lowercase), numbers and maybe a questionmark, a dash(hyphen), and an exclamation mark. Also the spacebar should be enabled. Otherwise the ajax search would be triggered as well if the shift-, option, or control-key, is pressed. What's the easiest regex pattern to understand here? thank you for your help

  We're investigating a coding pattern in C# in which we'd like to use a "using" clause with a special class, whose Dispose() method does different things depending on whether the "using" body was exited normally or with an exception. To the best of my understanding, the CLR keeps track of the current exception being handled until it's been consumed by a "catch" handler. However it's not entirely clear whether this information is exposed in any way for the code to access. Do you know whether it is, and if so, how to access it? For example: using (var x = new MyObject()) { x.DoSomething(); x.DoMoreThings(); } class MyObject : IDisposable { public void Dispose() { if (ExceptionIsBeingHandled) Rollback(); else Commit(); } } This looks almost like System.Transactions.TransactionScope, except that success/failure is not determined by a call to x.Complete(), but rather based on whether the using body was exited normally.

I'm creating a model instance (using MVVM pattern) in the code behind file in the constructor of page as MainViewModel model = new MainViewModel(); I have a button in HomePage.xaml which I want to bind to the command inside MainViewModel called GetData() and want to populate the data in datagrid. MainViewModel has an ObservableCollection which I would use to bind the data in datagrid. Populating the data in datagrid without binding command works fine.   Hello, I have application which retrieves many large log files from a system LAN. Currently I put all log files on Postgresql, the table has a column type TEXT and I don't plan any search on this text column because I use another external process which nightly retrieves all files and scans for sensitive pattern. So the column value could be also a BLOB or a CLOB, but now my question is the following, the database has already its compression system, but could I improve this compression manually like with common compressor utilities? And above all WHAT IF I manually pre-compress the large file and then I put as binary into the data table, is it unuseful as database system provides its internal compression?

• Entity Framework with File-Based Database

  I am in the process of developing a desktop application that needs a database. The application is currently targeted to SQL Express 2005 and works wonderfully. However, I'm not crazy about having this dependency on SQL Express and would prefer to use a small file-based database. My problem is that I am using Entity Framework. I have tried both SQL Compact and SQLite, and they both have bizarre problems with EF v1. I get errors creating the Model, invalid models when it does get created... it's a nightmare. I'm about ready to give up and write a data layer and repository in the good-old-school Connection/Command pattern. Not my favorite plan... Is there a lightweight, file-based database out there that plays well with EF? OR Is there a better ORM tool that I should use instead of EF with my lightweight DB?

  I'm trying to write a beautify.vim script that makes C-like code adhere to a standard that I can easily read. My file contains only substitution commands that all begin with %s/... However, when I try to run the script with my file open, in the manner :source beautify.vim, or :runtime beautify.vim, it runs but all the substitute commands state that their pattern wasn't found (patterns were tested by entering them manually and should work).   I have a module in a Prism application and in its initialize method I want to register a presenter instead of a view with a region, i.e. I want to do this: PSEUDO-CODE: regionManager.RegisterPresenterWithRegion( "MainRegion", typeof(Presenters.EditCustomerPresenter)); instead of loading a view like this: regionManager.RegisterViewWithRegion( "MainRegion", typeof(Views.EditCustomerView)); The presenter would of course bring along its own view and ultimately register this view in the region, but it would allow me to bind the presenter to the view in the presenter's constructor instead of binding the two together in XAML (which is more of a decoupled MVVM pattern which I want to avoid here). • Future proof Primary Key design in postgresql

  I've always used either auto_generated or Sequences in the past for my primary keys. With the current system I'm working on there is the possibility of having to eventually partition the data which has never been a requirement in the past. Knowing that I may need to partition the data in the future, is there any advantage of using UUIDs for PKs instead of the database's built-in sequences? If so, is there a design pattern that can safely generate relatively short keys (say 6 characters instead of the usual long one e6709870-5cbc-11df-a08a-0800200c9a66)? 36^6 keys per-table is more than sufficient for any table I could imagine. I will be using the keys in URLs so conciseness is important.

  I opened a heroku account. I followed the instructions on http://docs.heroku.com/quickstart. I have a working rails app which I have deployed successfully elsewhere. I have a github account that works. I have a local git repository for my rails app. I installed the heroku gem. It shows up in my gem list. I typed 'heroku create' at the command prompt... My command console showed that it was thinking about it, but did nothing. No errors. No action. Possible related facts: I am using a Windows 7 machine. I have also failed miserably at deploying with capistrano with a similar--issue command, get no response--pattern.

  We have an Oracle application that uses a standard pattern to populate surrogate keys. We have a series of extrinsic rows (that have specific values for the surrogate keys) and other rows that have intrinsic values. We use the following Oracle trigger snippet to determine what to do with the Surrogate key on insert: 'IF :NEW.SurrogateKey IS NULL THEN SELECT SurrogateKey_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.SurrogateKey FROM DUAL; END IF;' If the supplied surrogate key is null then get a value from the nominated sequence, else pass the supplied surrogate key through to the row. I can't seem to find an easy way to do this is T-SQL. There are all sorts of approaches, but none of which use the notion of a sequence generator like Oracle and other SQL-92 compliant DBs do. Anybody know of a really efficient way to do this in SQL Server T-SQL? BTW we're using SQL Server 2008 if that's any help. TIA, Paolo

  I'm creating a new Client / Server application in C# and expect to have a fairly high rate of connections. That made me think of database connection pools which help mitigate the expense of creating and disposing connections between the client and database. I would like to create a similar capability for my application and haven't been able to find any good examples of how to apply this pattern. Do I really need to spin up an instance of a TcpClient every time I want to send a message to the server and receive a receipt message? Each connection is expected to transport between 1-5KB with each receiving a 1KB response message. I realize this question is somewhat vague, but I am starting from scratch so I am open to suggestions. Even if that means my suppositions are all wrong.

  We're updating our architecture to use a single object model for desktop, web and mobile that can be used in the MVVM pattern. I would like to be able to limit the data fields that are serialized through Web API by using interfaces on the controllers. This is required because the model objects for mobile are stored in HTML5 local storage so don't carry optional data while a thin desktop client would be able to store (and work with) more data. To achieve this a model will implement the different interfaces that define which data fields should be serialized and there will be a controller specific to the interface. The problem is that the Web API always serializes every field in the model even if it is not part of the interface being returned. How can we only serialize fields in the returned interface?

• Static classes in PHP via abstract keyword?

  According to the PHP manual, a class like this: abstract class Example {} cannot be instantiated. If I need a class without instance, e.g. for a registry pattern: class Registry {} // and later: echo Registry::$someValue; would it be considered good style to simply declare the class as abstract? If not, what are the advantages of hiding the constructor as protected method compared to an abstract class? Rationale for asking: As far as I see it, it could a bit of feature abuse, since the manual refers to abstract classes more as like blueprints for later classes with instantiation possibility.
