  • Convert a PDF to a Transparent PNG with GhostScript

    - by Jonathon Wolfe
    Hi all. I am attempting, unsuccessfully, to use Ghostscript to rasterize PDF files with a transparent background to PNG files with a transparent background. I've searched high and low for questions from others attempting the same thing and none of the posted solutions, which as far as I can tell come down to specifying -sDEVICE=pngalpha, have worked with my test files. At this point I would really appreciate any advice or tips a more experienced hand could provide. My test PDF is located here: http://www.kolossus.com/files/test.pdf It could be that the issue is with this file, but I doubt it. As far as I can tell, it has no specified background, and when I open the file with a transparency-aware app like Photoshop or Illustrator, sure enough it displays with a transparent background. However, when opened with an application like Adobe Reader the file is rendered with a white background. I believe that this has more to do with the application rendering the PDF than with the PDF itself -- apps like Adobe Reader assume you want to see what a printed document will look like and therefore always show a white canvas behind the artwork -- but I can't be sure. The gs command I'm using is: gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pngalpha -r72 -sOutputFile=test.png test.pdf This produces a PNG that has transparent pixels outside of the bounding box of the artwork in the file, but all pixels that are inside the artwork's bounding box are rasterized against a white background. This is a problem for me, as my artwork has drop shadows and antialiased edges that need to be preserved in the final output, and can't just be postprocessed out with ImageMagick. A sample of my PNG output is at the same location as the pdf above, with .png at the end (stackoverflow won't let me include more than one url in my post). Interestingly, I see no effects from using the -dBackgroundColor flag, even if I set it to something non-white like -dBackgroundColor=16#ff0000. Perhaps my understanding of the syntax of this flag is wrong. Also interestingly, I see no effects from using the -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 flags to try to enable subpixel antialiasing. I would also appreciate any advice on how to enable subpixel antialiasing, especially on text. Finally, I'm using GPL Ghostscript 8.64 on Mac OS 10.5.7, and the rendering workflow I'm trying to get set up is to generate transparent PNG images from PDFs output by PrinceXML. I'm calling Ghostscript directly for the rasterization instead of using ImageMagick because ImageMagick delegates to Ghostscript for PDF rasterization and I should be able to control the rasterization better by calling GS directly. Thanks for your help. -Jon Wolfe

  • Does visibility affect DOM manipulation performance?

    - by Chetan Sastry
    IE7/Windows XP I have a third party component in my page that does a lot of DOM manipulation to adjust itself each time the browser window is resized. Unfortunately I have little control of what it does internally and I have optimized everything else (such as callbacks and event handlers) as much as I can. I can't take the component off the flow by setting display:none because it fails measuring itself if I do so. In general, does setting visibility of the container to invisible during the resize help improve DOM rendering performance?

  • Using Effect For Fog of War

    - by Qua
    I'm trying to apply fog of war to areas on the screen not currently visible to the player. I do this by rendering the game content in one RenderTarget and the the fog of war into another, and then I merge them with an effect file that takes the color from the game RenderTarget and the alpha from the fog of war render target. The FOW RenderTarget is black where the FOW appears, and white where it doesn't. This does work, but it colors the fog of war (the unrevealed locations) white instead of the intended color of black. Before applying the effect I clear the backbuffer of the device to white. When I try to clear it to black, non of the fog of war appears at all, which I assume is a product of alpha blending with black. It works for all other colors, however - giving the resulting screen a tint of that color. How do I archieve a black fog while still being able to do alpha blending between the two render targets? The rendering code for applying the FOW: private RenderTarget2D mainTarget; private RenderTarget2D lightTarget; private void CombineRenderTargetsAndDraw() { batch.GraphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(null); batch.GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.White); fogOfWar.Parameters["LightsTexture"].SetValue(lightTarget); batch.Begin(SpriteSortMode.Immediate, BlendState.AlphaBlend); fogOfWar.CurrentTechnique.Passes[0].Apply(); batch.Draw( mainTarget, new Rectangle(0, 0, batch.GraphicsDevice.PresentationParameters.BackBufferWidth, batch.GraphicsDevice.PresentationParameters.BackBufferHeight), Color.White ); batch.End(); } The effect file I'm using to apply the FOW: texture LightsTexture; sampler ColorSampler : register(s0); sampler LightsSampler = sampler_state{ Texture = <LightsTexture>; }; struct VertexShaderOutput { float4 Position : POSITION0; float2 TexCoord : TEXCOORD0; }; float4 PixelShaderFunction(VertexShaderOutput input) : COLOR0 { float2 tex = input.TexCoord; float4 color = tex2D(ColorSampler, tex); float4 alpha = tex2D(LightsSampler, tex); return float4(color.r, color.g, color.b, alpha.r); } technique Technique1 { pass Pass1 { PixelShader = compile ps_2_0 PixelShaderFunction(); } }

  • How to refresh DataGrid and DropDown on main page after hiding modal popup

    - by James
    Hi, I am adding records to a database from a modal popup. After hiding the modal popup, the page has not been refreshed even though I have Rebound the controls. I have reviewed a few postings on the web about this but the solution still evades me. I have attached my code after removing some of the extra detail... It seems I need to cause a postback but I don't know what needs to be changed. Some posts have talked about the extender being misplaced. Anyway, thank you James <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="Head" Runat="Server"> <div class="divBorder"> <asp:DataGrid id="dgrSessionFolders" runat="server" BorderWidth="2px" BorderStyle="Solid" BorderColor="#C0C0FF" Font-Names="Arial" Font-Bold="True" Font-Size="8pt" GridLines="Horizontal" AutoGenerateColumns="False" PageSize="9999" AllowPaging="False" OnItemCommand="dgrSessionFolders_Command" OnItemDataBound="CheckSessionFolderStatus" HorizontalAlign="Left" ForeColor="Blue" ShowFooter="True" CellPadding="2" OnSortCommand="dgrSessionFolders_Sort" AllowSorting="True"> </asp:DataGrid> </div> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <asp:Label ID="Errormsg" runat="server" ForeColor="#CC0000"></asp:Label> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server" RenderMode="Inline" ChildrenAsTriggers="false" UpdateMode="Conditional"> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnEditTopic" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnAdd" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnUpdate" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnDelete" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnClear" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnAddTopic" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnUpdateTopic" /> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnDeleteTopic" /> </Triggers> <ContentTemplate> <asp:panel id="pnl" runat="server" HorizontalAlign="Center" Height="48px" Width="100%" > &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <asp:ImageButton ID="btnEditTopic" runat="server" AlternateText="Edit Topic" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnEditTopic.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <cc1:ModalPopupExtender ID="btnEditTopic_ModalPopupExtender" runat="server" BackgroundCssClass="modalBackground" DropShadow="true" Enabled="true" PopupControlID="pnlEditTopic" TargetControlID="btnEditTopicHidden" CancelControlID="btnEditTopicClose"> </cc1:ModalPopupExtender> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnAdd" runat="server" AlternateText="Add Folder" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnAddFolder.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnUpdate" runat="server" AlternateText="Update Folder" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnUpdateFolder.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnDelete" runat="server" AlternateText="Delete Folder" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnDeleteFolder.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="BtnClear" runat="server" AlternateText="Clear Screen Input Fields" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnAddMode.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:Button ID="btnEditTopicHidden" runat="server" Enabled="false" Text="" Style="visibility: hidden" /> </asp:panel> <asp:Panel ID="pnlEditTopic" runat="server" CssClass="modalPopupEditTopic" Style="display: none;" > <table cellspacing="0" class="borderTable0" width="100%" style=""> <tr> <td colspan="10" class="Subhdr" align="center" style="width:100%"> <asp:label id="lblTopicScreenHdr" Cssclass="ScreenHdr" runat="server">Topic Maintenance</asp:label> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="6"> <asp:Label ID="TopicPopErrorMsg" runat="server" ForeColor="#CC0000">&nbsp;</asp:Label> </td> </tr> <tr style="height:4px"> <td colspan="6" align="center"> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnAddTopic" runat="server" AlternateText="Add Topic" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnApply.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnUpdateTopic" runat="server" AlternateText="Update Topic" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnApply.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnDeleteTopic" runat="server" AlternateText="Delete Topic" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnDelete.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> <asp:ImageButton ID="btnEditTopicClose" runat="server" AlternateText="Close Edit Topic Popup" ImageUrl="~/App_Themes/Common/images/BtnCancel.jpg" Height="28px"> </asp:ImageButton> </td> </tr> </table> </asp:Panel> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> Private Sub btnAddTopic_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAddTopic.Click 'Add the Topic table entry AddTopic() 'Display an informational message Errormsg.Text = "The Topic has been successfully added, thank you!   • Render an asp.net control from a text string

    - by madness
    Hi All, I'm not sure if it is possible to render an asp.net control from a string. The string contains fragments of html code and I've tried rendering that string to a div tag with runat="server" set, asp panel contain, asp lalbel control and asp literal control. All of them doesn't render the asp control in that text to an actual control, it just come up as a string. I've tried adding <% % around them and it appears it doesn't like it. Thanks in advance.

  • display wait gif until image is fully loaded

    - by Dimitris Baltas
    Most popular browsers, while rendering an image, they display it line-by-line top-to-bottom as it loads. I have a requirement that a wait gif should be displayed while the image is loading. When the image is fully loaded then it should be displayed instead of the wait gif. If it helps, the site is http://farros.gr, main image: /images/bg.jpg and the div containing the image is named #main-content-image.

  • Rails find over multiple models

    - by kgb
    I think I'm missing something very obvious and its making my brain hurt. class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :profile class Profile < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :user belongs_to :team I have a partial that loops through the users and print some basic info, I'm using this partial in my team show page. I had originally written this to return users who's profiles were a member of a team. def show @team = Team.find_by_id(params[:id]) @profiles= Profile.find(:all, :conditions => ['team_id = ?', @team.id]) @users = User.find_by_id(@profiles.user_id) end But quickly realized @profiles was an array, and it looks messy as hell. Stuck as to what my find should look like to select all User who have a profile that is a member of a team. The partial that is working elsewhere for displaying users looks like this <% for user in @users%> <table> <tr> <td> <%= image_tag user.profile.picture.url %> </td> <td> <a href="/users/<%= user.id %>"><%= user.login %></a> </td> <td> <%= user.profile.first_name %> <%= user.profile.second_name %> </td> <td> <%= user.profile.status %> </td> </tr> </table> <% end %> Development log output with updated show and relationships Processing TeamsController#show (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-03-30 22:06:31) [GET] Parameters: {"id"=>"1"} User Load (1.3ms) SELECT * FROM "users" WHERE ("users"."id" = 3) LIMIT 1 Team Load (1.0ms) SELECT * FROM "teams" WHERE ("teams"."id" = 1) Rendering template within layouts/main Rendering teams/show Completed in 75ms (View: 11, DB: 2) | 200 OK [http://localhost/teams/1]

  • GWT ScrollTable performance problem

    - by wolfi
    Hey all, I'm having a little performance problem with the gwt (incubator) ScrollTable. It's rendering really slow. Not even when I'm loading a lot of data - it happens already with a few rows. Or is it possible that the deserializing of the data takes so long? I'm using GWT 2.0 and IE. Maybe someone has the same problem or a solution for it. Thx and Happy Easter!

  • Practical Uses of Fractals in Programming

    - by Sami
    Fractals have always been a bit of a mystery for me. What practical uses (beyond rendering to beautiful images) are there for fractals in the various programming problem domains? And please, don't just list areas that use them. I'm interested in specific algorithms and how fractals are used with those algorithms to solve something in practice. Please at least give a short description of the algorithm.

  • Sprite Fallback

    - by MontyBongo
    I have a number of images on a page contained within a single sprite image, these images must be contained within the single sprite due to other requirements of the site. Whilst this is working fine in most browsers I have an issue on Opera Mini where it is not rendering the sprite at all and just displaying the whole image. Is there any CSS that can be used to provide a text alternative when the browser is unable to render the sprite?

  • As3: Plotting text as in technical drawings

    - by Cambiata
    Hi! Flash/Actionscript 3 lack the possibility to "draw" text to a displayobject graphics - a textfield has to be created, added and set. This is rather clumsy and time consuming. In the wait for simple and stable alternatives (for example http://lab.polygonal.de/2009/12/15/font-rendering-with-the-fp10-drawing-api/), is there a class or library for simply plotting text strings using graphical primitives (lines), something like the text is "drawn" on plotted technical drawings?
