• 2-column table with two foreign keys. Performance/design question.

  Hello everyone! I recently ran into a quite complex problem and after looking around a lot I couldn't find a solution to it. I've found answers to my questions many times before on stackoverflow.com, so I decided to post here. So I'm making a user/group managment system for a web-based project, and I'm storing all related data into a postgreSQL database. This system relies on three tables: USERS GROUPS GROUP_USERS The two first tables simply define all the users and all the groups on the site, and the last table, GROUP_USERS, stores the groups every user is part of. It only has two columns: USER_ID GROUP_ID Since every user can be a member of several groups, I decided to make a separate table for this purpose, rather than storing a comma separated column in the USERS-table. Now, both columns are foreign keys, and I want to make them both primary keys as well, this since each combination of USER_ID and GROUP_ID has to be unique, and if I give them the constraint UNIQUE pgAdmin tells me that each table should have at least one Primary key. But now I am stuck with what seems to be a lot of indexes and relations to a very small table only containing numbers. In the end, I want this table to be as fast as possible, even if containing tens of thousands of rows. Size on disk shouldn't be a problem since its just all numbers anyway, but it feels quite stupid to have a full-sized index refering to a smaller table. Should I stick with my current solution, store comma-separated values in a column in the USERS-table or is there any other solution I should be aware of. PS. I don't want to use an array-column, even if they are supported by postgreSQL. I want to be as generic as possible so I can switch database later on, if necessary. EDIT: I other words, will using a compound primary key and two foreign keys in one table with only two columns have a negative impact on performance rather than the opposite due to the size of the generated index? • Linq to Entities Joins

  I have a question about joins when using Linq to Entities. According to the documentation the use on the join without a qualifier performs like a left outer join. However when I execute the code below, I get a count returned of zero. But if I comment out the three join lines I get a count of 1. That would indicate that the join are acting as inner join. I have two questions. One which is right inner or outer as the default? Second how do I do the other one i.e. inner or outer? • I can't compile this code

• Intelligent search and generation of Java code, preferrably using Python?

  Basically, I do lots of one-off code generation, large-scale refactorings, etc. etc. in Java. My tool language of choice is Python, but I'll take whatever solutions you can offer. Here is a simplified illustration of what I would like, in a pseudocode Generating an implementation for an interface search within my project: for each Interface as iName: write class(name=iName+"Impl", implements=iName) search within the body of iName: for each Method as mName: write method(name=mName, body="// TODO implement this...") Basically, the tool I'm searching for would allow me to: parse files according to their Java structure ("search for interfaces") search for words contextualized by language elements and types ("variables of type SomeClass", "doStuff() method calls on SomeClass instances") to run searches with structural context ("within the body of the current result") easily replace or generate code (with helpers to generate, as above, or functions for replacing, "rename the interface to Foo", "insert the line Blah.Blah()", etc.) The point is, I don't want to spend a lot of time writing these things, as they are usually throwaway. But sometimes I need something just a little smarter than what grep offers. It wouldn't be too hard to write up a simplistic version of this, but if I'm going to use something like this at all, I'd expect it to be robust. Any suggestions of a tool/library that will help me accomplish this?

• jQuery and executing code until mouseout is called

  Good day all, I am tasked with building a slider for our site. Here is my goal: <div id="abc"> <div id="slider">...</div> </div> I need to move "slider" left 30px at a time when a button is hovered over, and right 30px when another button is hovered over. My problem is that there doesn't seem to be a reliable method for telling the code that the mouse hasn't left the are in question, unless there is something I did not think about or read yet. In other words, when the mouse is OVER the a button, the code to move "slider" left is executed until the mouseout is called. I'm not really sure how to do this. The only way I can think of is to look at the offsetTop and offsetLeft and offsetTop DOM properties and compare them to the mouse position, than run checks to see if the mouse is within the bounds of the box, and if not than it will stop the execution of code. Is there a better way to do this?

• Alternate colors on click with jQuery

  I'm sure there is a simple solution to this, and I'm sure this is a duplicate question, though I have been unable to solve my solution particularly because I don't really know how to phrase it in order to search for other questions/solutions, so I'm coming here hoping for some help. Basically, I have spans with classes that assigns a background-color property, and inside those spans are words. I have three of these spans, and each time a user clicks on a span I want the class to change (thus changing the background color and inner text). HTML: <span class="alternate"> <span class="blue showing">Lorem</span> <span class="green">Ipsum</span> <span class="red">Dolor</span> </span> CSS: .alternate span { display : none } .alternate .showing { display : inline } .blue { background : blue } .green { background : green } .red { background : red } jQuery: $(".alternate span").each(function() { $(this).on("click", function() { $(this).removeClass("showing"); $(this).next().addClass("showing"); }); }); This solution works great using $.next until I get to the third click, whereafter .showing is removed, and is not added since there are no more $.next options. How do I, after getting to the last-child, add .showing to the first-child and then start over? I have tried various options including if($(".alternate span:last-child").hasClass("showing")) { etc. etc. }, and I attempted to use an array and for loop though I failed to make it work. Newb question, I know, but I can't seem to solve this so as a last resort I'm coming here.

• JQuyer slide and stop issues: animated element freezes with quick mouse movement

  Here is Zi JsFiddle. In order to replicate my issue you have to hover over the link that says 'javascript', then mouseout that, then mouseback in. If you do this before the animation is complete, the pink slidedown #subMenu will freeze midway through sliding. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I have tried some .stop()s , but i really don't want the animation to re-start every time you mouseenter or leave the .navLink . The animation should begin from where it left off. In other words, if the pink section is halfway down, and a slideDown() gets executed, the pink should not dissappear and then slide down, it should slide down from where it is. Thanks!! • Within a DLL, how is the function table structured?

  I've been looking into the implementation of a device library that doesn't explicitly support my operating system. In particular, I have a disassembled DLL, and a fair amount of supporting source code. Now, how is the function table/export table structured? My understanding is that the first structure of the .data section is a table of VRAs. Next is a table of strings linked by index to that first address table. This makes sense to me, as a linker could translate between symbols and addresses. How do functions referenced by ordinals fit into this picture? How does one know which function has such and such ordinal number, and how does the linker resolve this? In other words, given that some other DLL imports SOME_LIBRARY_ordinal_7, how does the linker know which function to work with? Thanks, all! edit More information... Im working with the FTDI libraries, and would like to resolve which function is being invoked.   I need to display a banner that sticks to the bottom of the browser. How ever, when user navigates to next page, the banner shows up again. What can I do to set the banner to remained hidden just for this visit? In other words, as long as the browser remained open, the banner will not show up again. But if user returns to the same website another time, the banner should load again. • Unable to parse variable length string separated by delimiter

  Hi, I have a problem with parsing a string, which consists only of directory path. For ex. My input string is Abc\Program Files\sample\ My output should be Abc//Program Files//sample The script should work for input path of any length i.e., it can contain any no. of subdirectories. (For ex., abc\temp\sample\folder\joe) I have looked for help in many links but to no avail. Looks like FOR command extracts only one whole line or a string (when we use ‘token’ keyword in FOR syntax) but my problem is that I am not aware of the input path length and hence, the no. of tokens. My idea was to use \ as a delimiter and then extract each word before and after it (), and put the words to an output file along with // till we reach the end of the string. I tried implementing the following but it did not work: @echo off FOR /F "delims=\" %%x in (orig.txt) do ( IF NOT %%x == "" echo.%%x//output.txt ) The file orig.txt contains only one line i.e, Abc\Program Files\sample\ The output that I get contains only: Abc// The above output contains blank spaces as well after ‘Abc//’ My desired output should be: Abc//program Files//sample// Can anyone please help me with this? • Overlapping audio in IE when I show/hide videos

  I have a thumbnail list with links to individual videos. Everything works fine in all browsers but IE. In IE, if I start a video and (without slicking pause or stop) click on the thumbnail for the next video, the audio continues playing. In other words, the audio for both videos plays at once. Any suggestions? • Detecting the axis of rotation from a pointcloud

  I'm trying to auto-detect the axis of rotation on a 3d pointcloud. In other words, if I took a small 3d pointcloud, chose a single axis of rotation, and make several copies of the points at different rotation angles, then I get a larger pointcloud. The input to my algorithm is the larger pointcloud, and the desired output is the single axis of symmetry. And eventually I'm going to compute the correspondences between points that are rotations of each other. The size of the larger pointcloud is on the order of 100K points, and the number of rotational copies made is unknown. The rotation angles in my case have constant deltas, but don't necessarily span 360 degrees. For example, I might have 0, 20, 40, 60. Or I might have 0, 90, 180, 270. But I won't have 0, 13, 78, 212 (or if I do, I don't care to detect it). This seems like a computer vision problem, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to precisely find the axis. The input will generally be very clean, close to float accuracy.

• sql queries slower than expected

  Before I show the query here are the relevant table definitions: CREATE TABLE phpbb_posts ( topic_id mediumint(8) UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL, poster_id mediumint(8) UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL, KEY topic_id (topic_id), KEY poster_id (poster_id), ); CREATE TABLE phpbb_topics ( topic_id mediumint(8) UNSIGNED NOT NULL auto_increment ); Here's the query I'm trying to do: SELECT p.topic_id, p.poster_id FROM phpbb_topics AS t LEFT JOIN phpbb_posts AS p ON p.topic_id = t.topic_id AND p.poster_id <> ... WHERE p.poster_id IS NULL; Basically, the query is an attempt to find all topics where the number of times someone other than the target user has posted in is zero. In other words, the topics where the only person who has posted is the target user. Problem is that query is taking a super long time. My general assumption when it comes to SQL is that JOINs of any are super fast and can be done in no time at all assuming all relevant columns are primary or foreign keys (which in this case they are). I tried out a few other queries: SELECT COUNT(1) FROM phpbb_topics AS t JOIN phpbb_posts AS p ON p.topic_id = t.topic_id; That returns 353340 pretty quickly. I then do these: SELECT COUNT(1) FROM phpbb_topics AS t JOIN phpbb_posts AS p ON p.topic_id = t.topic_id AND p.poster_id <> 77198; SELECT COUNT(1) FROM phpbb_topics AS t JOIN phpbb_posts AS p ON p.topic_id = t.topic_id WHERE p.poster_id <> 77198; And both of those take quite a while (between 15-30 seconds). If I change the < to a = it takes no time at all. Am I making some incorrect assumptions? Maybe my DB is just foobar'd?

• help('modules') crashing? Not sure how to fix..

  I was trying to install a module for opencv and added an opencv.pth file to the folder beyond my sites.py file. I have since deleted it and no change. • How to secure connection strings in VS?

  I see several others have posted this question, however, none of the solutions I've tried have fixed this yet. I have a 32-bit XP running VS 2008 and I am trying to encrypt my connection string in my web.config file. But I am getting the error: The configuration section '...' was not found. Failed! The command I give it: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VCAspnet_regiis.exe -pe "system.we b/AdventureWorksConnectionString2" -app "/Documents and Settings/Admin/My Docume nts/Visual Studio 2008/Projects/AddFileToSQL2" Also, how does -app map virtual directory? In other words the path above is the directory right below c:. Is this the correct path to use? And AddFileToSQL2 is the name of my project, although it is part of the AddFileToSQL solution. I have this folder web shared with all of the permissions. • Java: Cleaing up connection reset (but not by peer).

  There seems to be some confusion as well contradicting statements on various SO answers: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/585599/whats-causing-my-java-net-socketexception-connection-reset . You can see here that the accepted answer states that the connecteion was closed by other side. But this is not true, closing a connection doesn't cause a connection reset. It is cauesed by "an underlying TCP/IP error." What I want to know is if a SocketException: Connection reset means really besides "unerlying TCP/IP Error." What really causes this? As I doubt it has anything to do with the connection being closed (since closing a connection isn't an exception worthy flag, and reading from a closed connection is, but that isn't an "underlying TCP/IP error." My hypothesis is this Connection reset is caused from a server's failure to acknowledge an ACK packet (either wholly or just improperly as per TCP/IP). And that a SocketTimeoutException is generated only when no data is generated to be read (since this is thrown during a read after a certain duration, and read is waiting for data, but is not concerned with ACK packets). In other words, read() throws SocketTimeoutException if it didn't read any bytes of actual data (DATA LAYER) in its allotted time.

• .NET security mechanism to restrict access between two Types in the same project?

  Question: Is there a mechanism in the .NET Framework to hide one custom Type from another without using separate projects/assemblies? I'm using C# with ASP.NET in a Website project. Note: I'm not talking about access modifiers to hide members of a Type from another type - I mean to hide the Type itself. Background: I'm working in an ASP.NET Website project and the team has decided not to use separate project assemblies for different software layers. Therefore I'm looking for a way to have, for example, a DataAccess/ folder of which I disallow its classes to access other Types in the same ASP.NET Website project. In other words I want to fake the layers and have some kind of security mechanism around each layer to prevent it from accessing another. Obviously there's not a way to enforce this restriction using language-specific OO keywords so I am looking for something else, for example: maybe a permission framework or code access mechanism, maybe something that uses meta data like Attributes. Even something that restricts one namespace from accessing another. I'm unsure the final form it might take. If this were C++ I'd likely be using friend to make as solution, which doesn't translate to C# internal in this case although they're often compared. I don't really care whether the solution actually hides Types from each other or just makes them inaccessible; however I don't want to lock down one Type from all others, another reason access modifiers are not a solution. A runtime or design time answer will suffice. Looking for something easy to implement otherwise it's not worth the effort ...

• Git repositories on shared hosting with ssh access - multiple users / one ssh account

  I'm part of a small team trying to start coding on a project. I've decided it's time to give git a chance (no more svn) and was trying to see if we could use our shared web hosting to deploy a "public" repository there so that we can easily push/pull to/from it and keep up-to-date with each others changes. The problem I'm having now is that we only have a single ssh account for that hosting. Having used svn in the past, I could enforce a svn username on a given pair of ssh keys, however I don't seem to be able to do something similar with git (in other words tie the ssh keypair to a specific dev). I don't mind everybody having read/write permissions everywhere, since anything that is private should stay on each others machine. Finally, solutions such as gitosis can not be used. I guess my question to you is how is accountability to git pushes given? Is it tied to the ssh account being used, or the email address given in git config? Can I create different ssh keys for every developer (for the same ssh account though), and just send them to the devs?

• Generate unique ID from multiple values with fault tolerance

  Given some values, I'd like to make a (pretty darn) unique result. $unique1 = generate(array('ab034', '981kja7261', '381jkfa0', 'vzcvqdx2993883i3ifja8', '0plnmjfys')); //now $unique1 == "sqef3452y"; I also need something that's pretty close to return the same result. In this case, 20% of the values is missing. $unique2 = generate(array('ab034', '981kja7261', '381jkfa0', 'vzcvqdx2993883i3ifja8')); //also $unique2 == "sqef3452y"; I'm not sure where to begin with such an algorithm but I have some assumptions. I assume that the more values given, the more accurate the resulting ID – in other words, using 20 values is better than 5. I also assume that a confidence factor can be calculated and adjusted. What would be nice to have is a weight factor where one can say 'value 1 is more important than value 3'. This would require a multidimensional array for input instead of one dimension. I just mashed on the keyboard for these values, but in practice they may be short or long alpha numeric values.

• Is there any seriously good reason why a view can not completely manage itself?

  Example: I have an warning triangle icon, which is a UIImageView subclass. That warning is blended in with an animation, pulses for 3 seconds and then fades out. it always has a parent view! it's always only used this way: alloc, init, add as subview, kick off animation, when done:remove from superview So I want this: [WarningIcon warningAtPosition:CGPointMake(50.0f, 100.0f) parentView:self]; BANG! That's it. Call and forget. The view adds itself as subview to the parent, then does it's animations. And when done, it cuts itself off from the branch with [self removeFromSupeview];. Now some nerd a year ago told me: "Never cut yourself off from your own branch". In other words: A view should never ever remove itself from superview if it's no more referenced anywhere. I want to get it, really. WHY? Think about this: The hard way, I would do actually the exact same thing. Create an instance and hang me in as delegate, kick off the animation, and when the warning icon is done animating, it calls me back "hey man i'm done, get rid of me!" - so my delegate method is called with an pointer to that instance, and I do the exact same thing: [thatWarningIcon removeFromSuperview]; - BANG. Now I'd really love to know why this sucks. Life would be so easy.

• Increasing understanding of validating a string with PHP string functions

  I've just started attempts to validate data in PHP and I'm trying to understand this concept better. I was expecting the string passed as an argument to the $data parameter for the test_input() function to be formatted by the following PHP functions. trim() to remove white space from the end of the string stripslashes() to return a string with backslashes stripped off htmlspecialchars() to convert special characters to HTML entities The issue is that the string that I am echoing at the end of the function is not being formatted in the way I desire at all. In fact it looks exactly the same when I run this code on my server - no white space removed, the backslash is not stripped and no special characters converted to HTML entities. My question is have I gone about this in the wrong approach? Should I be creating the variable called $santised_input on 3 separate lines with each of the functions trim(), stripslashes() and htmlspecialchars()? By my understanding surely I am overwriting the value of the $santised_input variable each time I recreate it on a new line of code. Therefore the trim() and stripslashes() string functions will never be executed. What I am trying to achieve is using the "$santised_input" variable to run all of these PHP string functions when the $data argument is passed to my test_input() function. • Why use shorter VARCHAR(n) fields?

  It is frequently advised to choose database field sizes to be as narrow as possible. I am wondering to what degree this applies to SQL Server 2005 VARCHAR columns: Storing 10-letter English words in a VARCHAR(255) field will not take up more storage than in a VARCHAR(10) field. Are there other reasons to restrict the size of VARCHAR fields to stick as closely as possible to the size of the data? I'm thinking of Performance: Is there an advantage to using a smaller n when selecting, filtering and sorting on the data? Memory, including on the application side (C++)? Style/validation: How important do you consider restricting colunm size to force non-sensical data imports to fail (such as 200-character surnames)? Anything else? Background: I help data integrators with the design of data flows into a database-backed system. They have to use an API that restricts their choice of data types. For character data, only VARCHAR(n) with n <= 255 is available; CHAR, NCHAR, NVARCHAR and TEXT are not. We're trying to lay down some "good practices" rules, and the question has come up if there is a real detriment to using VARCHAR(255) even for data where real maximum sizes will never exceed 30 bytes or so. Typical data volumes for one table are 1-10 Mio records with up to 150 attributes. Query performance (SELECT, with frequently extensive WHERE clauses) and application-side retrieval performance are paramount.
