    As far as I understand, every string is an object in Javascript. Still, it "does not work" as I expect it to be: var a="abc"; //here we get a new string object a.b = 123; //I seem to declare a property "b" of that object alert(a.b); //alerts "undefined" However, if I try to define a string in the "wrong way", everything works as expected var a=new String("abc"); // a.b = 123; alert(a.b); //alerts "123" Why is that so?

  • socket timeout and remove O_NONBLOCK option

    Hello, I implemented a socket timeout and retry but in order to do it I had to set the socket as a non-blocking socket. However, I need the socket to block. This was my attempt at a solution to these two problems. This is not working. Subsequent send calls block but never send any data. When I connect without the select and the timeout, subsequent send calls work normally.   • Where to draw the line between efficiency and practicality

    I understand very well the need for websites' front ends to be coded and compressed as much as possible, however, I feel like I have more lax standards than others when it comes to practical applications. For instance, while I understand why some would, I don't see anything wrong with putting selectors in the <html> or <body> tags on a website with an expected small visitation rate. I would only do this for a cheap website for a small client, because I can't really justify the cost of time otherwise. So, that said, do you think it's okay to draw a line? Where do you draw yours?

    I've heard a lot of people espouse the capabilities of LISP and its omnipotent macros. If LISP is such a great language, why isn't it being adopted more? What problems is LISP facing that is holding it back from (re)emerging as popular language? Is it something about LISP itself ("those brackets!" isn't the answer, is it?!), or its competitors (e.g. the dominance of Java, .NET)?

    i have noticed that every area has some tools you can use to make things easier. eg. css = dreamweaver doctrine/propel = orm designer // you dont have to hardcore code schemas manually and remembering all the syntax/variables mysql = mysql workbench // the same etc. in this way you get aided and dont have to type things the hard way, and can learn the structure, but then use GUI tools to help you develop faster. now i'm learning design patterns (singleton, factory, command, memento etc) and im wondering if there are some kind of tools you can use that will help you develop faster. i dont know exactly what tools i'm trying to find, just helping me when coding with design patterns (schema drawings? references?) are there any?

    I am working on the firmware for a device that uses an 8bit mcu (8051 architecture). I am using SDCC (Small Device C Compiler). I have a function that I use to set the speed of a stepper motor that my circuit is driving. The speed is set by loading a desired value into the reload register for a timer. I have a variable, MotorSpeed that is in the range of 0 to 1200 which represents pulses per second to the motor. My function to convert MotorSpeed to the correct 16bit reload value is shown below.     What is the correct way to use socket_select within PHP to send and receive data? I have a connection to the server that allows for both TCP & UDP packet connections, I am utilizing both. Within these connections I'm both sending and receiving packets on the same port, but the TCP packet will be sent on one port (29999) and UDP will be sent on another port (30000). The transmission type will be that of AF_INET. The IP address will be loopback 127.0.0.1. I have many questions on how to create a socket connection within this scenario. For example, is it better to use socket_create_pair to make the connection, or use just socket_create followed by socket_connect, and then implement socket_select? There is a chance that no data will be sent from the server to the client, and it is up to the client to maintain the connection. This will be done by utilizing the time out function within the socket_select call. Should no data be sent within the time limit, the socket_select function will break and a keep alive packet can then be sent.   • Do you think the AI industry will ever come back?

    I just spent some time reading about the collapse of the AI industry and realized a lot of the reason it failed was because technology was slow to catch up with their theories on when it would be available. I also read that it is believed computers that will be able to emulate human synapses may be made round 2015-2025. It's 2010 now and were getting pretty close to that time frame. I was wondering if anyone thinks that the AI industry will return as the technology lands? And if so, will it change the language market? Could Lisp like languages suddenly experience a burst of growth if it does? Idk I just thought it was interesting thinking about it.

  • How to modify Keyboard interrupt (under Windows XP) from a C++ Program ?

We have been given a little project (As part of my OS course) to make a Windows program that modifies keyboard input, so that it transforms any lowercase character entered into an uppercase one (without using caps-lock) ! so when you type on the keyboard you'll see what you're typing transformed into uppercase ! I have done this quite easily using Turbo C by calling geninterrupt() and using variables _AH, _AL, i had to read a character using: _AH = 0x07; // Reading a character without echo geninterrupt(0x21); // Dos interrupt Then to transform it into an Upercase letter i have to mask the 5th bit by using: _AL = _AL & 0xDF; // Masking the entered character with 11011111 and then i will display the character using any output routine. Now, this solution will only work under old C DOS compilers. But what we intend to do is to make a close or similar solution to this by using any modern C/C++ compiler under Windows XP ! What i have first thought of is modifying the Keyboard ISR so that it masks the fifth bit of any entered character to turn it uppercase ! But i do not know how exactly to do this. Second, I wanted to create a Win32 console program to either do the same solution (but to no avail) or make a windows-compatible solution, still i do not know which functions to use ! Third I thought to make a windows program that modifies the ISR directly to suit my needs ! and i'm still looking for how to do this ! So please, If you could help me out on this, I would greatly appreciate it ! Thank you in advance ! (I'm using Windows XP on intel X86 with mingw-GCC compiler.)
