• What is a good design model for my new class?

  I am a beginning programmer who, after trying to manage over 2000 lines of procedural php code, now has discovered the value of OOP. I have read a few books to get me up to speed on the beginning theory, but would like some advice on practical application. So,for example, let's say there are two types of content objects - an ad and a calendar event. what my application does is scan different websites (a predefined list), and, when it finds an ad or an event, it extracts the data and saves it to a database. All of my objects will share a $title and $description. However, the Ad object will have a $price and the Event object will have $startDate. Should I have two separate classes, one for each object? Should I have a 'superclass' with the $title and $description with two other Ad and Event classes with their own properties? The latter is at least the direction I am on now. My second question about this design is how to handle the logic that extracts the data for $title, $description, $price, and $date. For each website in my predefined list, there is a specific regex that returns the desired value for each property. Currently, I have an extremely large switch statement in my constructor which determines what website I am own, sets the regex variables accordingly, and continues on. Not only that, but now I have to repeat the logic to determine what site I am on in the constructor of each class. This doesn't feel right. Should I create another class Algorithms and store the logic there for each site? Should the functions of to handle that logic be in this class? or specific to the classes whos properties they set? I want to take into account in my design two things: 1) I will add different content objects in the future that share $title and $description, but will have their own properties, so, I want to be able to easily grow these as needed. 2) I will add more websites constantly (each with their own algorithms for data extraction) so I would like to plan efficienty managing and working with these now. I thought about extending the Ad or Event class with 'websiteX' class and store its functions there. But, this didn't feel right either as now I have to manage 100s of little website specific class files. Note, I didn't know if this was the correct site or stackoverflow was the better choice. If so, let me know and I'll post there.

  I have VS2010 Ultimate on my dev machine, along with ReSharper, VSCommands2010 and few others. settings for vs2010, resharper, and other plugins get reset every once in a while - so i have to go in and set them up again, then restart VS for new settings to kick in. examples of settings i'm talking about: *resharper intellisense ingreation *resharper highlite current line *resharper participation in customer program (systray icon) *VSCommands2010 regex solution name *etc. is it possible to make VS remember all those settings once and forever.

• Setting the SlideShowExtender's Index

  The AJAX SlideShowExtender is pretty useful. It does what it says and works without much fuss. There was one trick I needed it to perform that I could not find natively within the control. That was to set the slide’s current index. With a little JavaScript however I could make the control do what I wanted. The example below assumes a few things. First you already have a SlideShowExtender setup and working (or see this post). Second this SlideShowExtender is on a page all by itself so the index to set the slide to is passed in the URL. The scenario I had was this SSE was showing full images, the index was passed from another page that had a SSE showing thumbnails. The slider.setCurrentImage() line does pretty much what it says. I added the slider._slider = ‘’ to avoid an error (not a show stopper just a bit annoying). • Sound not working in 12.04

  I got no sound on 12.04 - it's an amd64 desktop with SB Audigy card that has worked in all previous incarnations of Ubuntu I have tried alsa mixer and sound settings. All volume is up and all mutes are off. • Plagued by multithreaded bugs

  On my new team that I manage, the majority of our code is platform, TCP socket, and http networking code. All C++. Most of it originated from other developers that have left the team. The current developers on the team are very smart, but mostly junior in terms of experience. Our biggest problem: multi-threaded concurrency bugs. Most of our class libraries are written to be asynchronous by use of some thread pool classes. Methods on the class libraries often enqueue long running taks onto the thread pool from one thread and then the callback methods of that class get invoked on a different thread. As a result, we have a lot of edge case bugs involving incorrect threading assumptions. This results in subtle bugs that go beyond just having critical sections and locks to guard against concurrency issues. What makes these problems even harder is that the attempts to fix are often incorrect. Some mistakes I've observed the team attempting (or within the legacy code itself) includes something like the following: Common mistake #1 - Fixing concurrency issue by just put a lock around the shared data, but forgetting about what happens when methods don't get called in an expected order. Here's a very simple example: void Foo::OnHttpRequestComplete(statuscode status) { m_pBar->DoSomethingImportant(status); } void Foo::Shutdown() { m_pBar->Cleanup(); delete m_pBar; m_pBar=nullptr; } So now we have a bug in which Shutdown could get called while OnHttpNetworkRequestComplete is occuring on. A tester finds the bug, captures the crash dump, and assigns the bug to a developer. He in turn fixes the bug like this. void Foo::OnHttpRequestComplete(statuscode status) { AutoLock lock(m_cs); m_pBar->DoSomethingImportant(status); } void Foo::Shutdown() { AutoLock lock(m_cs); m_pBar->Cleanup(); delete m_pBar; m_pBar=nullptr; } The above fix looks good until you realize there's an even more subtle edge case. What happens if Shutdown gets called before OnHttpRequestComplete gets called back? The real world examples my team has are even more complex, and the edge cases are even harder to spot during the code review process. Common Mistake #2 - fixing deadlock issues by blindly exiting the lock, wait for the other thread to finish, then re-enter the lock - but without handling the case that the object just got updated by the other thread! Common Mistake #3 - Even though the objects are reference counted, the shutdown sequence "releases" it's pointer. But forgets to wait for the thread that is still running to release it's instance. As such, components are shutdown cleanly, then spurious or late callbacks are invoked on an object in an state not expecting any more calls. There are other edge cases, but the bottom line is this: Multithreaded programming is just plain hard, even for smart people. As I catch these mistakes, I spend time discussing the errors with each developer on developing a more appropriate fix. But I suspect they are often confused on how to solve each issue because of the enormous amount of legacy code that the "right" fix will involve touching. We're going to be shipping soon, and I'm sure the patches we're applying will hold for the upcoming release. Afterwards, we're going to have some time to improve the code base and refactor where needed. We won't have time to just re-write everything. And the majority of the code isn't all that bad. But I'm looking to refactor code such that threading issues can be avoided altogether. One approach I am considering is this. For each significant platform feature, have a dedicated single thread where all events and network callbacks get marshalled onto. Similar to COM apartment threading in Windows with use of a message loop. Long blocking operations could still get dispatched to a work pool thread, but the completion callback is invoked on on the component's thread. Components could possibly even share the same thread. Then all the class libraries running inside the thread can be written under the assumption of a single threaded world. Before I go down that path, I am also very interested if there are other standard techniques or design patterns for dealing with multithreaded issues. And I have to emphasize - something beyond a book that describes the basics of mutexes and semaphores. What do you think? I am also interested in any other approaches to take towards a refactoring process. Including any of the following: Literature or papers on design patterns around threads. Something beyond an introduction to mutexes and semaphores. We don't need massive parallelism either, just ways to design an object model so as to handle asynchronous events from other threads correctly. Ways to diagram the threading of various components, so that it will be easy to study and evolve solutions for. (That is, a UML equivalent for discussing threads across objects and classes) Educating your development team on the issues with multithreaded code. What would you do?

• Postfix rewrite sender: why doesn't this work

  I have server A with an IP address only and a dummy FQDN (on the basis all machines should have a FQDN): pants.net.invalid. All mail is relayed through another server elsewhere, which works fine. On server A, Postfix rewrites the sender address with smtp_generic_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/generic. According to the Rewrite manual at http://www.postfix.org/ADDRESS_REWRITING_README.html#remote, this should rewrite all outgoing external mail's Sender address: $ cat /etc/postfix/generic @pants.net.invalid [email protected] but it does not. postmap -q [email protected] returns nothing. This works: [email protected] [email protected] It seems as though it is doing regex matching even though I specify type hash:. Clearly I am misunderstanding the manual. I don't want to use regex or pcre expressions because there are only a couple of users (root and two others) and I don't want the overhead. I can specify the users exactly and it works. But, I would like to know what I am misunderstanding for future reference. Thanks.

• vagrant and puppet security for ssl certificates

  I'm pretty new to vagrant, would someone who knows more about it (and puppet) be able to explain how vagrant deals with the ssl certs needed when making vagrant testing machines that are processing the same node definition as the real production machines ? I run puppet in master / client mode, and I wish to spin up a vagrant version of my puppet production nodes, primarily to test new puppet code against. If my production machine is, say, sql.domain.com I spin up a vagrant machine of, say, sql.vagrant.domain.com. In the vagrant file I then use the puppet_server provisioner, and give a puppet.puppet_node entry of “sql.domain.com” to it gets the same puppet node definition. On the puppet server I use a regex of something like /*.sql.domain.com/ on that node entry so that both the vagrant machine and the real one get that node entry on the puppet server. Finally, I enable auto-signing for *.vagrant.domain.com in puppet's autosign.conf, so the vagrant machine gets signed. So far, so good... However: If one machine on my network gets rooted, say, unimportant.domain.com, what's to stop the attacker changing the hostname on that machine to sql.vagrant.domain.com, deleting the old puppet ssl cert off of it and then re-run puppet with a given node name of sql.domain.com ? The new ssl cert would be autosigned by puppet, match the node name regex, and then this hacked node would get all the juicy information intended for the sql machine ?! One solution I can think of is to avoid autosigning, and put the known puppet ssl cert for the real production machine into the vagrant shared directory, and then have a vagrant ssh job move it into place. The downside of this is I end up with all my ssl certs for each production machine sitting in one git repo (my vagrant repo) and thereby on each developer's machine – which may or may not be an issue, but it dosen't sound like the right way of doing this. tl;dr: How do other people deal with vagrant & puppet ssl certificates for development or testing clones of production machines ?

• Command line solution for removing parts from a binary file?

  I have a binary file and I would like to remove parts from. By removing I mean deleting those parts and thus making the file's size smaller. The parts would be between two ASCII strings. So, for example the file would look like this ........ start ABCD end ..... start EFGH end ..... start IJKL end ........... So in this file, I would like to search for strings "start" and "end" and remove the parts between them. The way I think I can do it is to lookup all the locations for "start" and "end" calculate ranges from that delete those parts Now I am using some GUI based Hex editor and I use the "Search All", "Select Range" and "Delete" commands, but I am sure it would be possible to solve it using some powerful command line hex/text editors. Do you know any solution for this problem which doesn't require using a GUI for looking up, copy & paste on clipboard, select range and delete commands but is just a few lines of command line? I am interested ini both Linux shell scripts or using some command line hex editors under Windows, or even Python scrips are welcome. Do you think it is possible to solve this problem just by a simple Regex replace? Are there any regex replace util which handles binary files well?

• Using sed to Download ComboFix automatically

  I'm trying to write a shell script to grab the dynamic URL which ComboFix is located at at BleepingComputer.com/download/combofix However, for some reason I can't seem to get my regex to match the download link of the "click here" if the download doesn't work. I used a regex tester and it said I matched the link, but I can't seem to get it to work when I execute it, it turns up an empty result.   Hi My component is responsible for downloading files from the server. As part of file validation I have used CAPICOM (SignedCode object) to validate if a certificate contains a specific string and call to Validate method of the SignedCode object. In case the file contains certificate without a requested string in the name, user was prompted if he trust this file. Since CAPICOM going to be deprecated by Microsoft, I need to implement these logic using .NET libraries. How I can get the same functionality using .NET libraries? Is there any example on the web? • Integrating POP3 client functionality into a C# application?

  I have a web application that requires a server based component to periodically access POP3 email boxes and retrieve emails. The service then needs to process the emails which will involve: Validating the email against some business rules (does it contain a valid reference in the subject line, which user sent the mail, etc.) Analysing and saving any attachments to disk Take the email body and attachment details and create a new item in the database Or update an existing item where the reference matches the incoming email subject line What is the best way to approach this? I really don't want to have to write a POP3 client from scratch, but I need to be able to customize the processing of emails. Ideally I would be able to plug in some component that does the access and retrieval for me, returning arrays of attachments, body text, subject line, etc. ready for my processing... [ UPDATE: Reviews ] OK, so I have spent a fair amount of time looking into (mainly free) .NET POP3 libraries so I thought I'd provide a short review of some of those mentioned below and a few others: Pop3.net - free - works OK, very basic in terms of functionality provided. This is pretty much just the POP3 commands and some base64 encoding, but it's very straight forward - probably a good introduction Pop3 Wizard - commercial / some open source code - couldn't get this to build, missing DLLs, I wouldn't bother with this C#Mail - free - works well, comes with Mime parser and SMTP client, however the comments are in Japanese (not a big deal) and it didn't work with SSL 'out of the box' - I had to change the SslStream constructor after which it worked no problem OpenPOP - free - hasn't been updated for about 5 years so it's current state is .NET 1.0, doesn't support SSL but that was no problem to resolve - I just replaced the existing stream with an SslStream and it worked. Comes with Mime parser. Of the free libraries, I'd go for C#Mail or OpenPOP. I looked at a few commercial libraries: Chillkat, Rebex, RemObjects, JMail.net. Based on features, price and impression of the company I would probably go for Rebex and may in the future if my requirements change or I run into production issues with either of C#Mail or OpenPOP.   In many of my answers I repeatedly urge users not to use JavaScript libraries like jQuery. I even wrote a blog post about the problems that using a library create. Some of these problems include holding back native standards development, keeping users comfortably using IE, and abstracting the developer from real JavaScript. If a site doesn't require IE as part of its audience, then how are libraries useful? The other popular browsers share extremely similar implementations and work well with things like JavaScript 1.6 arrays and AJAX. This is not a troll question, I'm truly wondering what they're useful for.

  How can I stop the ABAP extended program check (SLIN) from reporting errors in include libraries that I may not have write access to? I like to leave the extended check with as few errors & warnings as possible, usually when I intentionally use something in a way that may cause a warning, I use the pseudo comments ("#EC * etc) to hide the message. This also tells the next programmer that I at least thought about the possible consequences of using something in a particular way. When these statements are in includes that I have no control over, I would like to hide the messages without changing the offending libraries/includes.

• Qt static build with static mysql plugin confusion

  I have built a Qt application which uses the MySQL library, but I am confused by the documentation on static versus shared builds. From the Qt documentation at http://doc.qt.nokia.com/4.7/deployment-windows.html it says: To deploy plugin-based applications we should use the shared library approach. And on http://doc.qt.nokia.com/4.7/deployment.html, it says: Static linking results in a stand-alone executable. The advantage is that you will only have a few files to deploy. The disadvantages are that the executables are large and with no flexibility and that you cannot deploy plugins. To deploy plugin-based applications, you can use the shared library approach. But on http://doc.qt.nokia.com/latest/plugins-howto.html, it seems to say the opposite, giving directions on how to use static plugins: Plugins can be linked statically against your application. If you build the static version of Qt, this is the only option for including Qt's predefined plugins. Using static plugins makes the deployment less error-prone, but has the disadvantage that no functionality from plugins can be added without a complete rebuild and redistribution of the application. ... To link statically against those plugins, you need to use the Q_IMPORT_PLUGIN() macro in your application and you need to add the required plugins to your build using QTPLUGIN. I want to build the Qt libraries statically (for easy deployment) and then use the static MySQL plugin. To do this, I did NOT use the binary distrubtion for Windows. Instead, I've started with the source qt-everywhere-opensource-src-4.7.4 Is the following the correct way to do a static build so that i can use the static MySql plugin? configure -static -debug-and-release -opensource -platform win32-msvc2010 -no-qt3support -no-webkit -no-script -plugin-sql-mysql -I C:\MySQL\include -L C:\MySQL\lib This should build the Qt libraries statically AND the static plugin to be linked at run-time, correct? I would NOT need to build the Mysql Plugin from source separately, correct? If I was to subtitute "-qt-sql-mysql" for "-plugin-sql-mysql" in above, it would include the MySQL driver directly in the QT static libraries, in which case I would NOT need to use the plugin at all, correct? • Anyone had any experience with *.pcap manipulation libs?

  I'm using the SharpPcap + PacketDotNet libraries to process some .pcap files and came across a bug in the way the timestamps are calculated. Take this Timeval property, which is something along these lines: PosixTimeval Timeval { DateTime Date; ulong Seconds; ulong MicroSeconds; } The problem is as follows: Suppose you have a trace open in Wireshark with one of the packets with a timestamp of "0.002". Once you open it within one of your programs, it retrieves the packet and its Timeval is setup such that Seconds = 0 and MicroSeconds = 002 = 2. This is done under the hood, so there is no way to avoid it as far as I can tell. My question is if that problem is common to other libraries (and maybe all of them?) who manipulate the pcap file format, which I think are built around the same collection of c/c++ functions, or if this is a problem only with the ones I'm using.

  For my iPhone app, I'm consuming a RESTful service and getting JSON. I've found libraries to deserialize this into an NSDictionary. However, I'm wondering if there are any libraries to deserialize the JSON/NSDictionary/Property List into my object (an arbitrary one on my side). The java equivalent would be the object-relational mappers although the sort of object mapping I'm looking for is relatively straightforward (simple data types, no complex relationships, etc.). I noticed that Objective-C does have introspection so it seems theoretically possible but I haven't found a library to do it. Or is there a simple way to load an object from an NSDictionary/Property List object that doesn't require modification every time the object changes? For example: { "id" : "user1", "name" : "mister foobar" "age" : 20 } gets loaded into object @interface User : NSObject { NSString *id; NSString *name; int *age; }
