• Is there a standard pattern for scanning a job table executing some actions?

  (I realize that my title is poor. If after reading the question you have an improvement in mind, please either edit it or tell me and I'll change it.) I have the relatively common scenario of a job table which has 1 row for some thing that needs to be done. For example, it could be a list of emails to be sent. The table looks something like this: ID Completed TimeCompleted anything else... ---- --------- ------------- ---------------- 1 No blabla 2 No blabla 3 Yes 01:04:22 ... I'm looking either for a standard practice/pattern (or code - C#/SQL Server preferred) for periodically "scanning" (I use the term "scanning" very loosely) this table, finding the not-completed items, doing the action and then marking them completed once done successfully. In addition to the basic process for accomplishing the above, I'm considering the following requirements: I'd like some means of "scaling linearly", e.g. running multiple "worker processes" simultaneously or threading or whatever. (Just a specific technical thought - I'm assuming that as a result of this requirement, I need some method of marking an item as "in progress" to avoid attempting the action multiple times.) Each item in the table should only be executed once. Some other thoughts: I'm not particularly concerned with the implementation being done in the database (e.g. in T-SQL or PL/SQL code) vs. some external program code (e.g. a standalone executable or some action triggered by a web page) which is executed against the database Whether the "doing the action" part is done synchronously or asynchronously is not something I'm considering as part of this question.

  I'm using a legacy database that was 'future proofed' to keep track of historical changes. It turns out this feature is never used so I want to map the tables into a single entity. My tables are: CodesHistory (CodesHistoryID (pk), CodeID (fk), Text) Codes (CodeID (pk), CodeName) To add an additional level of complexity, these tables hold the content for the drop down lists throughout the application. So, I'm trying to map a Title entity (Mr, Mrs etc.) as follows: Title ClassMap - Public Sub New() Table("CodesHistory") Id(Function(x) x.TitleID, "CodesHistoryID") Map(Function(x) x.Text) 'Call into the other half of the 1-2-1 join in order to merge them in 'this single domain object Join("Codes", AddressOf AddTitleDetailData) Where("CodeName like 'C.Title.%'") End Sub ' Method to merge two tables with a 1-2-1 join into a single entity in VB.Net Public Sub AddTitleDetailData(ByVal m As JoinPart(Of Title)) m.KeyColumn("CodeID") m.Map(Function(x) x.CodeName) End Sub From the above, you can see that my 'CodeName' field represents the select list in question (C.Title, C.Age etc). The problem is that the WHERE clause only applies to the 'CodesHistory' table but the 'CodeName' field is in the 'Codes' table. As I'm sure you can guess there's no scope to change the database. Is it possible to apply the WHERE clause to the Codes table?

• How to capture a click on a link on a temporary layer that is hidden when the focus changes

  We have a layer that appears when a certain text input has the focus and that should dissappear when the input loses the focus. I tried to do it like this: <input type="text" onblur="document.getElementById('hideme').style.display='none'" /> <div id="hideme">Textextext <a href="http://disney.com/">disney</a> text</div> My problem is: when the user clicks on the link link, the browser does not follow this link. It seems the layer disappears before the browser checks where the click goes. What can I do here? One idea would be to watch whether the mouse enters the hideme div and not to close it when the mouse cursor is in there, but this seems way to complicated. Do you have a better idea? By the way: you can try it out very easy by pasting this into the Tryit Editor of w3schools. :-)

• Help Optimizing MySQL Table (~ 500,000 records) and PHP Code.

  I have a MySQL table that collects player data from various game servers (Urban Terror). The bot that collects the data runs 24/7, and currently the table is up to about 475,000+ records. Because of this, querying this table from PHP has become quite slow. I wonder what I can do on the database side of things to make it as optomized as possible, then I can focus on the application to query the database. The guid is a md5sum, 32 char hex. Date is stored as unix timestamp. I have a unique key on name, ip and guid, as to avoid duplicates of the same player. Do I have my keys setup right? Is the way I'm storing data efficient? Here is the code to query this table. You search for a name, ip, or guid, and it grabs the results of the query and cross references other records that match the name, ip, or guid from the results of the first query, and does it for each field. This is kind of hard to explain. • How would I associate a "Note" class to 4+ classes without creating lookup table for each associatio

  Im creating a project tasklist application. I have project, section, task, issue classes, and would like to use one class to be able to add simple notes to any object instance of those classes. The task, issue tables both use a standard identity field as a primary key. The section table has a two field primary key. The project table has a single int primary key defined by the user. Is there a way to associate the note class with each of these without using a seperate lookup table for each class? I'm not so sure my original idea is a decent way to implement this. I considered the following (each variable mapping to a field n the notes table. Private _NoteId As Integer Private _ProjectId As Integer Private _SectionId As Integer Private _SectionId2 As Integer Private _TaskId As Integer Private _IssueId As Integer Private _Note As String Private _UserId As Guid Then I would be able to write seperate methods (getProjectNotes, getTaskNotes) to get notes attached to each class. But how could I always properly close the DB without having to worry if I have that return, or a raise, or continue, or whatever in the middle? • Does deleting temporary symlinks interrupt current downloads/access to that symlink?

  I am using symlinks generated in PHP. They are generated when someone requests a download, and I want them to expire at the end of each day. The problem is, what if someone starts downloading a symlink 1 minute before the end of the day and then I delete the symlink while they are downloading it... My question is, to your knowledge will that individual downloading the symlink, right before I delete it, still be able to "download" the file? I am not worried about "resumable download" capability.. but will it make their download stop or break in some way?

• Matching up text in 2 different columns in a table?

  Hey guys, I have recently been working on a pastebin script (for fun) and I've come across a problem that I can't seem to solve in CSS. I have a table with 2 columns. 1 column is used to display the line numbers and the 2nd column is used to display the code. I can't seem to get the numbers match up with the lines in the code so it looks all weird (example: www.zamnproductions.com/paste.php?id=32).   I have a table with two child tables. For each record in the parent table, I want one and only one record in one of the child tables -- not one in each, not none. How to I define that? Here's the backstory. Feel free to criticize this implementation, but please answer the question above, because this isn't the only time I've encountered it: I have a database that holds data pertaining to user surveys. It was originally designed with one authentication method for starting a survey. Since then, requirements have changed, and now there are two different ways someone could sign on to start a survey. Originally I captured the authentication token in a column in the survey table. Since requirements changed, there are three other bits of data that I want to capture in authentication. So for each record in the survey table, I'm either going to have one token, or a set of three. All four of these are of different types, so my thought was, instead of having four columns where either one is going to be null, or three are going to be null ( or even worse, a bad mashup of either of those scenarios ), I would have two child tables, one for holding the single authentication token, the other for holding the three. Problem is, I don't know offhand how to define that in DDL. I'm using MySQL, so maybe there's a feature that MySQL doesn't implement that lets me do this.

• c++ link temporary allocations in fuction to custom allocator?

  Hi, I am currently working on some simple custom allocators in c++ which generally works allready. I also overloaded the new/delete operators to allocate memory from my own allocator. Anyways I came across some scenarios where I don't really know where the memory comes from like this: void myFunc(){ myObj testObj(); ....do something with it } In this case testObj would only be valid inside the function, but where would its memory come from? Is there anyway I could link it to my allocator? Would I have to create to object using new and delete or is there another way? Thanks

• Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS0030: Cannot convert type 'Type[]' to 'Type'?

  I get this error after I created a class from my xsd file using the xsd.exe tool. So I searched the net and found a solution. Here is the link: http://satov.blogspot.com/2006/12/xsdexe-generated-classes-causing.html Problem is that this makes the code run, but somehow the deserialized data seems corrupt. I did what the site suggests and in the end the 2nd array dimension is always empty (see the comments of the site, somebody also had this problem). Question is, how do I solve this issue now? Is there another tool to create the xsd file? I tried Xsd2Code, without success. Thanks :-)

  I'm trying to create a table using PHP. What I need is a table with two columns. So I have an SQL table with 4 fields - primary key id, language, word and definition. The language for each is either Arabic or Russian. I want a table that does the following: | defintion | |____________________| | | | rus1 | arab1 | | rus2 | arab2 | | rus3 | arab3 | | rus4 | | So it divides the list by English word, creates a for each English word, then lists Russian equivalents in the left column and Arabic in the right. However there are often not the same number for both. What I am doing right now is running a WHILE loop in a WHILE loop. The outer loop is running fine but I think I am doing the inner loop wrong. • Azure Mobile Services: what files does it consist of?

  Azure Mobile Services is a platform that provides a small set of functionality consisting of authentication, custom data tables, custom API’s, scheduling scripts and push notifications to be used as the back-end of a mobile application or if you want, any application or web site. As described in my previous post Azure Mobile Services: lessons learned the documentation on what can be used in the custom scripts is a bit minimalistic. The list below of all files the complete Azure Mobile Services platform consists of ca shed some light on what is available in the platform. In following posts I will provide more detailed information on what we can conclude from this list of files. Below are the available files as available in the Azure Mobile Services platform. The bold files are files that describe your data model, api scripts, scheduler scripts and table scripts. Those are the files you configure/construct to provide the “configuration”/implementation of you mobile service. The files are located in a folder like C:\DWASFiles\Sites\youreservice\VirtualDirectory0\site\wwwroot. One file is missing in the list below and that is the event log file C:\DWASFiles\Sites\youreservice\VirtualDirectory0\site\LogFiles\eventlog.xml where your messages written with for example console.log() and exception catched by the system are written.   I have been working on configuring my mail server for the last couple of weeks using postfix, dovecot, and mysql. I have one virtual domain and a few virtual mailboxes. Using squirrelmail I have been able to log into my accounts and send emails out (e.g. I can send to googlemail just fine), however I am not able to receive any emails--not from the outside world nor from within my own network. I am able to telnet in using localhost, my private ip, and my public ip on port 25 without any problems (I've tried it from the server itself and from another computer on my network).   None of the basic table AutoFormat schemes in LibreOffice Writer have both an alternation style defined and no sum column/row style defined. If they have alternation, they always seem to have sums. Because of this I'd like to define my own table scheme. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? A WYSIWYG isn't totally necessary. I am not scared of editing simple XML files as long as I have examples to work from, and if I don't have to edit base install files. If I can place them in a custom area or my user profile directory then that would be best. If there is a way to get the GUI Add functionality to properly recognize an alternation then that would also be helpful.

• Puppet: how to use data from a MySQL table in Puppet 3.0 templates?

  I have some data whose source-of-truth is in a MySQL database, size is expected to max out at the some-thousands-rows range (in a worst-case scenario) and I'd like to use puppet to configure files on some servers with that data (mostly iterating through those rows in a template). I'm currently using Puppet 3.0.x, and I cannot change the fact that MySQL will be the authoritative source for that data. Please note, data comes from external sources and not from puppet or from the managed nodes. What possible approaches are there? Which one would you recommend? Would External Node Classifiers be useful here? My "last resort" would be regularly dumping the table to a YAML file and reading that through Hiera to a Puppet template, or to directly dump the table in one or more pre-formatted text file(s) ready to be copied to the nodes. There is an unanswered question on SF about system users but the fundamental issue is probably similar to mine - he's trying to get data out of MySQL.
