    How would you rate each of them in terms of: Performance Speed of development Neat, intuitive, maintainable code Flexibility Overall I like my SQL and so have always been a die-hard fan of ADO.NET and stored procedures but I recently had a play with Linq to SQL and was blown away by how quickly I was writing out my DataAccess layer and have decided to spend some time really understanding either Linq to SQL or EF... or neither? I just want to check, that there isn't a great flaw in any of these technologies that would render my research time useless. E.g. performance is terrible, it's cool for simple apps but can only take you so far

  • PHP / Zend Framework: Force prepend table name to column name in result array?

    I am using Zend_Db_Select currently to retrieve hierarchical data from several joined tables. I need to be able to convert this easily into an array. Short of using a switch statement and listing out all the columns individually in order to sort the data, my thought was that if I could get the table names auto-prepended to the keys in the result array, that would solve my problem. So considering the following (assembled) SQL: SELECT user.*, contact.* FROM user INNER JOIN contact ON contact.user_id = user.user_id I would normally get a result array like this: [username] => 'bob', [contact_id] => 5, [user_id] => 2, [firstname] => 'bob', [lastname] => 'larsen' But instead I want this: [user.user_id] => 2, [user.username] => 'bob', [contact.contact_id] => 5, [contact.firstname] => 'bob', [contact.lastname] => 'larsen' Does anyone have an idea how to achieve this?   • Zend Framework-Do images, mp3s, scripts, etc, just go in public folder?

    I guess these are all questions that everyone must just know, because I'm not seeing this in the documentation :-D I understand that the public folder is the folder that the world has access to. I know it is the case with the css folder, but in migrating a traditional php website over, will my /images folder, /js folder /mp3s, etc Will those all just also be public folders that will be accessed via the layout or view.phtml pages? Thanks!

    My relationship between the parent and child is that they are connected by an edge. It is similiar to a directed graph structure.   • Using Entity Framework, how do I specify a sort on a navagation property?

    I have two tables: [Category], [Item]. They are connected by a join table: [CategoryAndItem]. It has two primary key fields: [CategoryKey], [ItemKey]. Foreign keys exist appropriately and Entity has no problem pulling this in and creating the correct navigation properties that connect the entity objects. Basically each category can have multiple items, and items can be in multiple categories. The problem is that the order of items is specified per category, so that a particular item might be third in one category but fifth in another. In the past, I have added a [Sequence] field to the join table and modified the stored procedure to handle it. But since Entity is replacing my stored procedures, I need to figure out how to make Entity handle the sequence. Any suggestions?

'; exec (@sql) END then in edmx, I add the sp and import function for this sp. the return type is scalars int32. then I want to use this function in code like: int? result = context.MySP(); I got error said "cannot implicitly convert type System.Data.Objects.ObjectResults to int?" If use var result = context.MySP(); then Single() cann't be applied to context.MySP(). How to get the result for this case?

  • Entity framework (3.5): How to translate a certain LINQ query to eSQL?

    Hi there, I have the following LINQ query that I need to translate to Entity SQL /eSQL): return (ObjectQuery<User>) from user in Users where !user.Roles.Any(r => r.AnIntegerProperty < 0) select user; User.Roles is an navigation property to the n:m relation to Roles and there also is a Role.Users navigation property the other way round. There aren't User_Roles or Roles_User Entities available in the model, and I can't add these. I also can't use the LINQ statement here, because I need to add .OrderBy("it." + propertyname) (comes from another source, can't change that too) later on which is not possible if the ObjectQuery is build with linq. So how do I translate this to eSQL? And where can I find good eSQL samples? I searched for a whole day until now and must admit that eSQL reference is lousy and there aren't any usable examples around the web.

    Hi. I got .asmx a web service on my app. I need to call a method from an other app to get statistics from my app. I need it to return XML. the call to the webmethod is done with javascript soap. There is a default hellow world webmethod and calling that work but it seem that when i try to call a method where i need to pass parameters and it need to execute code it wont work and just return my error message. any ideas on what can be wrong. am I using the wrong web method?

  • where should I put the EF entity and data annotations in asp.net mvc + entity framework project

    So I have a DataEntity class generated by EntityFramework4 for my sqlexpress08 database. This data context is exposed via a WCF Data Service/Odata to silverlight and win forms clients. Should the data entities + edmx file (generated by EF4) go in a separate class library? The problem here then is I would specify data annotations for a few entities and then some of them would require specific MVC attributes (like CompareAttribute) so the class library would also reference mvc dlls. There also happen to be entity users which will be encapsulated or wrapped into an IIdentity in the website. So its pretty tied to the mvc website. Or Should it maybe go in a Base folder in the mvc project itself? Mostly the website is data driven around the database, like approve users, change global settings etc. The real business happens in the silverlight and win forms apps. Im using mvc3 rc2 with Razor.     Having spent a couple of days wrestling with DataGrid in .NET CF, especially controlling the look and feel, I'm looking for alternatives. I don't mind purchasing a solution. I'm looking for Redistributable to our enterprise customers. We control the hardware so it doesn't have to work perfectly on every device. Display strings and numbers in columns with headings. Scrollable, but no paging. Don't row editing. Need to add and delete rows. User re-sizable column widths, and a way to persist that. Work with .NET CF 2.0 or 3.5 on Windows CE 6.0 Any suggestions on grids or toolkits?

  • IBM Worklight v6.1.0.1 : Error when using Ionic Framework with Worklight and run on IOS environment

    I have created demo app using Ionic with Worklight and it worked on Android but got error on IOS, when i used mobile browser simulator and debugged on IOS environment, i got the folowing error message: Uncaught InvalidCharacterError: Failed to execute 'add' on 'DOMTokenList': The token provided ('platform-ios - iphone') contains HTML space characters, which are not valid in tokens.   • Can't get the JSONP workin' with WCF Data Services...

    What am I missing here? It seems from all that I read and watched, exposing JSON from a WCF Data Service should be as easy as adding the '[JSONPSupportBehavior]' directive in front of the Service Class. Problem is VS2010 doesn't recognize 'JSONPSupportBehavior'. Is there a reference I am missing? Seemed like, from alll the articles, it was supportted outta the box. TIA S.

  • Bulk inserting and updating with Entity Framework (Probably a better alternative?)

    I have a data set of devices, addresses, and companies that I need to import into our database, with the catch that our database may already include a specific device/address/company that is included in the new data set. If that is the case, I need to update that entry with the new information in the data set, excluding addresses. We check if an exact copy of that address exists, otherwise we make a new entry. My issue is that it is very slow to attempt to grab a device/company in EF and if it exist updated it, otherwise insert it. To fix this I tried to get all the companies, devices, and addresses and insert them into respective hashmaps, and check if the identifier of the new data exists in the hashmap. This hasn't led to any performance increases. I've included my code below. Typically I would do a batch insert, I'm not sure what I would do for a batch update though.   • Is there any modern command-line based text editor?

    A command line in a text editor is a wonderful feature. It allows the user to explore the editor's functionality and learn it's shortcuts in a textual way. It's much faster than using the mouse, and it is much easier to memorise "shortcuts" this way. Emacs and VI provide this, though, emacs and vi are not "modern". By "modern", I mean one that is original built to cope with the modern de-facto standards of selecting, copying, pasting, cutting, undoing, redoing and auto-completing. Cream/vi or EmacsCUE are not valid options, since there are loads of things built over them that conflict with the mentioned stuff. Is there any alternative?

  • Entity Framework query builder methods: why "it" and not lambdas?

    I'm just getting started with EF and a query like the following strikes me as odd: var departmentQuery = schoolContext.Departments.Include("Courses"). OrderBy("it.Name"); Specifically, what sticks out to me is "it.Name." When I was tooling around with LINQ to SQL, pretty much every filter in a query-builder query could be specified with a lambda, like, in this case, d = d.Name. I see that there are overrides of OrderBy that take lambdas that return an IOrderedQueryable or an IOrderedEnumable, but those obviously don't have the Execute method needed to get the ObjectResult that can then be databound. It seems strange to me after all I've read about how lambdas make so much sense for this kind of stuff, and how they are translated into expression trees and then to a target language - why do I need to use "it.Name"?

  • How to select text that is not marked up with CSS/jquery?

    I want to apply some CSS to text that I can't get marked up in span's. So for example: <li><a href="google.com">This is marked up</a> and this is not </li> I want to select, with either CSS (preferably) or jQuery this bit: and this is not. Maybe there's a method of selecting the entire li then excluding a, that seems like a bypass. The reason why I can't get it marked up is because I'm using WP and prefer to do that than dig into endless lines of php code. Thanks a lot for the help.

  • [Zend Framework] Is there any way to use more than 1 bootstrap class?

    It should sound workaround or something like, but I'll tell you what: I chose to have a separated "project" with every library I could use. It's like a global library which I included Zend library, Doctrine ORM, JQuery, Blueprint CSS, etc. Then I set the include path. Nothing wrong. The problem is: I'd like to have also a global bootstrap class inside the library folder and an individual bootstrap class on each project I create for individual use. I don't know how to set more than 1 bootstrap class. Is it possible?
