  • High level overview of Visual Studio Extensibility APIs

    - by Daniel Cazzulino
    If your head is dizzy with the myriad VS services and APIs, from EnvDTE to Shell.Interop, this should clarify a couple things. First a bit of background: APIs on EnvDTE (DTE for short, since that’s the entry point service you request from the environment) was originally an API intended to be used by macros. It’s also called the automation API. Most of the time, this is a simplified API that is easier to work with, but which doesn’t expose 100% of what VS is capable of doing. It’s also kind of the “rookie” way of doing VS extensibility (VSX for short), since most hardcore VSX devs sooner or later realize that they need to make the leap to the “serious” APIs. The “real” VSX APIs virtually always start with IVs, make heavy use of uint, ref/out parameters and HResults. These are the APIs that have been evolving for years and years, and there is a lot of COM baggage. ...Read full article

  • A LEGO-Themed Take On the Movie Inception [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    This Inception-inspired short film combines LEGO and CGI to great effect. Courtesy of a Staffordshire University design team, the short is a result of roughly a thousand hours of design work spread between seven students to serve as their semester project in visual FX. It has everything you could want from Inception rendered in LEGO: folding landscapes, flying bricks, an a LEGO man or two even loses his head. • Draw Bug 2D player Camera

    - by RedShft
    I have just implemented a 2D player camera for my game, everything works properly except the player on the screen jitters when it moves between tiles. What I mean by jitter, is that if the player is moving the camera updates the tileset to be drawn and if the player steps to the right, the camera snaps that way. The movement is not smooth. I'm guessing this is occurring because of how I implemented the function to calculate the current viewable area or how my draw function works. I'm not entirely sure how to fix this. This camera system was entirely of my own creation and a first attempt at that, so it's very possible this is not a great way of doing things. My camera class, pulls information from the current tileset and calculates the viewable area. Right now I am targettng a resolution of 800 by 600. So I try to fit the appropriate amount of tiles for that resolution. My camera class, after calculating the current viewable tileset relative to the players location, returns a slice of the original tileset to be drawn. This tileset slice is updated every frame according to the players position. This slice is then passed to the map class, which draws the tile on screen. //Map Draw Function //This draw function currently matches the GID of the tile to it's location on the //PNG file of the tileset and then draws this portion on the screen void Draw(SDL_Surface* background, int[] _tileSet) { enforce( tilesetImage != null, "Tileset is null!"); enforce( background != null, "BackGround is null!"); int i = 0; int j = 0; SDL_Rect DestR, SrcR; SrcR.x = 0; SrcR.y = 0; SrcR.h = 32; SrcR.w = 32; foreach(tile; _tileSet) { //This code is matching the current tiles ID to the tileset image SrcR.x = cast(short)(tileWidth * (tile >= 11 ? (tile - ((tile / 10) * 10) - 1) : tile - 1)); SrcR.y = cast(short)(tileHeight * (tile > 10 ? (tile / 10) : 0)); //Applying the tile to the surface SDL_BlitSurface( tilesetImage, &SrcR, background, &DestR ); //this keeps track of what column/row we are on i++; if ( i == mapWidth ) { i = 0; j++; } DestR.x = cast(short)(i * tileWidth); DestR.y = cast(short)(j * tileHeight); } } //Camera Class class Camera { private: //A rectangle representing the view area SDL_Rect viewArea; //In number of tiles int viewAreaWidth; int viewAreaHeight; //This is the x and y coordinate of the camera in MAP SPACE IN PIXELS vect2 cameraCoordinates; //The player location in map space IN PIXELS vect2 playerLocation; //This is the players location in screen space; vect2 playerScreenLoc; int playerTileCol; int playerTileRow; int cameraTileCol; int cameraTileRow; //The map is stored in a single array with the tile ids //this corresponds to the index of the starting and ending tile int cameraStartTile, cameraEndTile; //This is a slice of the current tile set int[] tileSetCopy; int mapWidth; int mapHeight; int tileWidth; int tileHeight; public: this() { this.viewAreaWidth = 25; this.viewAreaHeight = 19; this.cameraCoordinates = vect2(0, 0); this.playerLocation = vect2(0, 0); this.viewArea = SDL_Rect (0, 0, 0, 0); this.tileWidth = 32; this.tileHeight = 32; } void Init(vect2 playerPosition, ref int[] tileSet, int mapWidth, int mapHeight ) { playerLocation = playerPosition; this.mapWidth = mapWidth; this.mapHeight = mapHeight; CalculateCurrentCameraPosition( tileSet, playerPosition ); //writeln( "Tile Set Copy: ", tileSetCopy ); //writeln( "Orginal Tile Set: ", tileSet ); } void CalculateCurrentCameraPosition( ref int[] tileSet, vect2 playerPosition ) { playerLocation = playerPosition; playerTileCol = cast(int)((playerLocation.x / tileWidth) + 1); playerTileRow = cast(int)((playerLocation.y / tileHeight) + 1); //writeln( "Player Tile (Column, Row): ","(", playerTileCol, ", ", playerTileRow, ")"); cameraTileCol = playerTileCol - (viewAreaWidth / 2); cameraTileRow = playerTileRow - (viewAreaHeight / 2); CameraMapBoundsCheck(); //writeln( "Camera Tile Start (Column, Row): ","(", cameraTileCol, ", ", cameraTileRow, ")"); cameraStartTile = ( (cameraTileRow - 1) * mapWidth ) + cameraTileCol - 1; //writeln( "Camera Start Tile: ", cameraStartTile ); cameraEndTile = cameraStartTile + ( viewAreaWidth * viewAreaHeight ) * 2; //writeln( "Camera End Tile: ", cameraEndTile ); tileSetCopy = tileSet[cameraStartTile..cameraEndTile]; } vect2 CalculatePlayerScreenLocation() { cameraCoordinates.x = cast(float)(cameraTileCol * tileWidth); cameraCoordinates.y = cast(float)(cameraTileRow * tileHeight); playerScreenLoc = playerLocation - cameraCoordinates + vect2(32, 32);; //writeln( "Camera Coordinates: ", cameraCoordinates ); //writeln( "Player Location (Map Space): ", playerLocation ); //writeln( "Player Location (Screen Space): ", playerScreenLoc ); return playerScreenLoc; } void CameraMapBoundsCheck() { if( cameraTileCol < 1 ) cameraTileCol = 1; if( cameraTileRow < 1 ) cameraTileRow = 1; if( cameraTileCol + 24 > mapWidth ) cameraTileCol = mapWidth - 24; if( cameraTileRow + 19 > mapHeight ) cameraTileRow = mapHeight - 19; } ref int[] GetTileSet() { return tileSetCopy; } int GetViewWidth() { return viewAreaWidth; } }

  • A correct way for JAVA age calculation? [closed]

    - by Jhonnytunes
    I have already a Java calculation of age method. I have a Person Class where I have the method and I need to ask the current time each time the method is called. All I could do is make age a static field of person class, so all person classes use the same time now. Im worring about the Calendar.get() creating Calendar objects every time method is called. Am I doing it wrong? Can I make it better? public short getAge(){ now = Calendar.getInstance(); return (short) ( (now.getTimeInMillis() - birthDate.getTimeInMillis())/ 31536000000L); }

  • Java on Ubuntu server 12.04?

    - by Sean Dunwoody
    I'm a little confused at the moment. My back story in short, is that I'm trying to set up a Minecraft server on an Ubuntu server I've recently set up, obviously to do this I needed Java, but after googling for a short while I wasn't entirely sure whether it is possible (or legal?) to do so in Ubuntu 12.04 due to licensing type issues - so I installed open JDK instead which appears not to work properly with the Minecraft server software (I half expected this) I'm now considering uninstalling open JDK and instead trying to get proper Java on there instead, my question is, is this possible? Is it Legal? And if so how do I go about doing it? Because I'm finding it very difficult to find any instructions on how to do so for 12.04 . . .

  • Why does my screen blank out for the duration of the Grub boot menu?

    - by hushs
    Upon booting, when I should see the GRUB menu, my monitor simply says: "No optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1600*1200". If I wait for a short while, Ubuntu starts to boot and it reaches the desktop. So I guess there is no video signal during that time, there's the grub menu but I cant see it and after the wait time everything is fine. I have the same problem when I log out for a short moment, before the log in screen is reached. and this also happens when i shut down ubuntu. The VGA is an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 7025.

  • Making a app show inside a GUI in Java

    - by José
    Hello. I have one problem I've been dealing with for this week. You see, I'm new to Java, so that's probably it... Anyways, I've started a project out of pure curiosity. I had it done in Java, but in plain CMD-style, which is not very pretty. It calls one of my ten programs, chosen by the user using "Case". Eg.: If you type 1, it will go to program 1. After you finish it, it goes back to selection until the user press 0. After that, I've been trying to make a GUI for it. I've been able to create the selector alone and make it respond to the numbers chosen. If you press 1 and click ok, it will tell you you've chosen program 1. I, however, have not been able to make it run the program. I've been trying to make the program show up in a jPanel, part of the main GUI. I failed miserably. The program runs in separate but I can't make them run together like the CMD one. The apps were made in Eclipse SDK 3.5.2 The GUIs were made in Netbeans IDE 6.8 Here's the code for the GUI only (the prints are in PT-BR, my native language): Main program: /* * To change this template, choose Tools | Templates * and open the template in the editor. */ /* * ProgramasGUI.java * * Created on 31/01/2010, 22:56:19 */ package Main; import Main.Prog1; /** * * @author Zeh® */ public class ProgramasGUI extends javax.swing.JFrame { /** Creates new form ProgramasGUI */ public ProgramasGUI() { initComponents(); } /** This method is called from within the constructor to * initialize the form. * WARNING: Do NOT modify this code. • Unconvert Text File from Binary Format

    - by Hammer Bro.
    I've got a rather large CSV file (~700MB) which I know to consist of lines of 27-character alpha-numeric hashes; no commas or anything fancy. Somehow, during its migration from Windows to Linux (via winSCP and then a few regular SCPs), it has converted into some kind of binary format I am unfamiliar with. If I open the file in vi, everything appears fine, and it says [converted] at the bottom, although I know it's not a line endings issue (and dos2unix doesn't help). If I 'head' the file, it looks proper except for a "ÿþ" at the beginning of the first line. If I open up the file in nano, however, I see the "ÿþ" at the start and then "^@" before every character (even newlines and EoF). If I try to re-save or copy the file (say via: head file.csv short.txt), this special encoding is preserved. I copied the first ten lines out of vi (which displays it properly) into my Windows clipboard via my SSH client, then pasted it into a new text file, test.txt. This file is visually identical when opened in vi (and similar through 'head', minus the "ÿþ"), although it's roughly half of the filesize. Additionally, file test.txt test.txt: ASCII text file short.txt short.txt: I have no idea what format this once-text file got converted to (it's notoriously hard to search the internet for symbols), but surely there must be some way to convert it back. Any ideas?

  • .NET Interface with AutoCAD -- SetXData errors.

    - by Jerry
    I am trying to use the SetXData method on the AutoCAD 2007 COM object, but it is throwing errors. Example Test: public AcadEntity getAcadEntity() { /// ... Basic code to return a single AutoCAD entity... } private void btnTagItem_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { AcadEntity ent = getAcadEntity(); short[] xDataType; string[] xDataStrings; DrawingXData xData = new DrawingXData(); xData.field1 = "Some Text Goes here"; xData.field2 = 1; xData.field3 = 100; xData.field4 = 1509.2; xData.field5 = "More Text"; BuildXData("AutoCad_App_Name", xData, out xDataType, out xDataStrings); ent.SetXData(xDataType, xDataStrings); // This line crashes. } private void BuildXData(string applicationName, DrawingXData xData, out short[] xDataType, out string[] xDataStrings) { List<short> dataTypes = new List<short>(); List<string> dataStrings = new List<string>(); /// Code types... /// 1000 == String up to 255 bytes /// 1001 == Application Name // Set Applicaiton Name dataTypes.Add(1001); dataStrings.Add(applicationName); // Set Application Data dataTypes.Add(1000); dataStrings.Add(xData.field1.ToString()); dataTypes.Add(1000); dataStrings.Add(xData.field2.ToString()); dataTypes.Add(1000); dataStrings.Add(xData.field3.ToString()); dataTypes.Add(1000); dataStrings.Add(xData.field4.ToString()); dataTypes.Add(1000); dataStrings.Add(xData.field5.ToString()); // ... etc. xDataType = dataTypes.ToArray(); xDataStrings = dataStrings.ToArray(); } The error I get is "Invalid argument data in SetXData method". The error code (if this helps anyone) is -2145320939. The main reason I'm posting is because the same code in a very old VB6 application works just fine. I'm stumped.

  • Android - Getting audio to play through earpiece

    - by Donal Rafferty
    I currently have code that reads a recording in from the devices mic using the AudioRecord class and then playing it back out using the AudioTrack class. My problem is that when I play it out it plays vis the speaker phone. I want it to play out via the ear piece on the device. Here is my code: public class LoopProg extends Activity { boolean isRecording; //currently not used AudioManager am; int count = 0; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); am = (AudioManager) getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE); am.setMicrophoneMute(true); while(count <= 1000000){ Record record = new Record(); record.run(); count ++; Log.d("COUNT", "Count is : " + count); } } public class Record extends Thread { static final int bufferSize = 200000; final short[] buffer = new short[bufferSize]; short[] readBuffer = new short[bufferSize]; public void run() { isRecording = true; android.os.Process.setThreadPriority (android.os.Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_URGENT_AUDIO); int buffersize = AudioRecord.getMinBufferSize(11025, AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO, AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT); AudioRecord arec = new AudioRecord(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC, 11025, AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO, AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT, buffersize); AudioTrack atrack = new AudioTrack(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC, 11025, AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO, AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT, buffersize, AudioTrack.MODE_STREAM); am.setRouting(AudioManager.MODE_NORMAL,1, AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC); int ok = am.getRouting(AudioManager.ROUTE_EARPIECE); Log.d("ROUTING", "getRouting = " + ok); setVolumeControlStream(AudioManager.STREAM_VOICE_CALL); //am.setSpeakerphoneOn(true); Log.d("SPEAKERPHONE", "Is speakerphone on? : " + am.isSpeakerphoneOn()); am.setSpeakerphoneOn(false); Log.d("SPEAKERPHONE", "Is speakerphone on? : " + am.isSpeakerphoneOn()); atrack.setPlaybackRate(11025); byte[] buffer = new byte[buffersize]; arec.startRecording(); atrack.play(); while(isRecording) { arec.read(buffer, 0, buffersize); atrack.write(buffer, 0, buffer.length); } arec.stop(); atrack.stop(); isRecording = false; } } } As you can see if the code I have tried using the AudioManager class and its methods including the deprecated setRouting method and nothing works, the setSpeatPoneOn method seems to have no effect at all, neither does the routing method. Has anyone got any ideas on how to get it to play via the earpiece instead of the spaker phone?

  • Dereferencing within a buffer

    - by kaykun
    Let's say I had a char pointer pointing to a buffer that contained these values (in hex): 12 34 56 78 00 00 80 00 I want to modify the last two bytes to a short value of 42. So I would think I would have to do something like this: (short)*(pointer+6)=42; The compiler doesn't complain but it does not do what I'm expecting it to do. Can someone tell me the correct way to assign the value?

  • How to fire server-side methods with jQuery

    - by Nasser Hajloo
    I have a large application and I'm going to enabling short-cut key for it. I'd find 2 JQuery plug-ins (demo plug-in 1 - Demo plug-in 2) that do this for me. you can find both of them in this post in StackOverFlow My application is a completed one and I'm goining to add some functionality to it so I don't want towrite code again. So as a short-cut is just catching a key combination, I'm wonder how can I call the server methods which a short-cut key should fire? So How to use either of these plug-ins, by just calling the methods I'd written before? Actually How to fire Server methods with Jquery? You can also find a good article here, by Dave Ward Update: here is the scenario. When User press CTRL+Del the GridView1_OnDeleteCommand so I have this protected void grdDocumentRows_DeleteCommand(object source, System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridCommandEventArgs e) { try { DeleteRow(grdDocumentRows.DataKeys[e.Item.ItemIndex].ToString()); clearControls(); cmdSaveTrans.Text = Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Documents.InsertClickText; btnDelete.Visible = false; grdDocumentRows.EditItemIndex = -1; BindGrid(); } catch (Exception ex) { Page.AddMessage(GetLocalResourceObject("AProblemAccuredTryAgain").ToString(), MessageControl.TypeEnum.Error); } } private void BindGrid() { RefreshPage(); grdDocumentRows.DataSource = ((DataSet)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.TRANSACTIONS_TABLE]; grdDocumentRows.DataBind(); } private void RefreshPage() { Creditors = (decimal)((AccDocument)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_TABLE].Rows[0][AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_CREDITORS_SUM_FIELD]; Debtors = (decimal)((AccDocument)Session[Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Accounting.Session.AccDocument]).Tables[AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_TABLE].Rows[0][AccDocument.ACCDOCUMENT_DEBTORS_SUM_FIELD]; if ((Creditors - Debtors) != 0) labBalance.InnerText = GetLocalResourceObject("Differentiate").ToString() + "?" + (Creditors - Debtors).ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF) + "?"; else labBalance.InnerText = GetLocalResourceObject("Balance").ToString(); lblSumDebit.Text = Debtors.ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF); lblSumCredit.Text = Creditors.ToString(Hajloo.Portal.Common.Constants.Common.Documents.CF); if (grdDocumentRows.EditItemIndex == -1) clearControls(); } Th other scenario are the same. How to enable short-cut for these kind of code (using session , NHibernate, etc)

  • Scalable Ticketing / Festival Website

    - by Luke Lowrey
    I've noticed major music festivals (at least in Australia) and other events that experience a peak in traffic when tickets go on sale have huge problems keeping their websites running well. I've seen a few different techniques used to try combat this such as short sessions and virtual queues but they dont seem to have much effect. If you were to design a website to sell a lot of tickets in a short amount of time how would you handle scalability? What technologies and programming techniques would you use?
