  • Silently catch windows error popups when calling System.load() in java

    I have a Java Swing application, which needs to load some native libraries in windows. The problem is that the client could have different versions of those libraries. In one recent version, either the names changed or the order on which the libraries must be loaded changed. To keep up, we iterated over all possible library names but some fail to load (due to it's nonexistence or because another must be loaded previously). This idea works on older Windows but on latter ones it shows a error popup. I saw on question 4058303 (Silently catch windows error popups when calling LoadLibrary) that I need to call SetErrorMode but I am not sure how to call SetErrorMode from jna.     Hi! I want to be able to control incoming text messages. My application is still on a "proof of concept" version and I'm trying to learn Android programming as I go. First my application need to catch incomming text messages. And if the message is from a known number then deal with it. If not, then send the message as nothing has happened to the default text message application. I have no doubt it can be done, but I still have some concern and I see some pitfalls at how things are done on Android. So getting the incomming text message could be fairly easy - except when there are other messaging applications installed and maybe the user wants to have normal text messages to pop up on one of them - and it will, after my application has had a look at it first. How to be sure my application get first pick of incomming text messages? And after that I need to send most text messages through to any other text message application the user has chosen so the user can actually read the message my application didn't need. Since Android uses intents that are relative at best, I don't see how I can enforce my application to get a peek at all incomming text messages, and then stop it or send it through to the default text messaging application...

  • How to catch unintentional function interpositioning?

    Reading through my book Expert C Programming, I came across the chapter on function interpositioning and how it can lead to some serious hard to find bugs if done unintentionally. The example given in the book is the following: my_source.c mktemp() { ... } main() { mktemp(); getwd(); } libc mktemp(){ ... } getwd(){ ...; mktemp(); ... } According to the book, what happens in main() is that mktemp() (a standard C library function) is interposed by the implementation in my_source.c. Although having main() call my implementation of mktemp() is intended behavior, having getwd() (another C library function) also call my implementation of mktemp() is not. Apparently, this example was a real life bug that existed in SunOS 4.0.3's version of lpr. The book goes on to explain the fix was to add the keyword static to the definition of mktemp() in my_source.c; although changing the name altogether should have fixed this problem as well. This chapter leaves me with some unresolved questions that I hope you guys could answer: Does GCC have a way to warn about function interposition? We certainly don't ever intend on this happening and I'd like to know about it if it does. Should our software group adopt the practice of putting the keyword static in front of all functions that we don't want to be exposed? Can interposition happen with functions introduced by static libraries? Thanks for the help. EDIT I should note that my question is not just aimed at interposing over standard C library functions, but also functions contained in other libraries, perhaps 3rd party, perhaps ones created in-house. Essentially, I want to catch any instance of interpositioning regardless of where the interposed function resides.

    I'm catching all exceptions within: java.lang.Throwable /page.xhtml java.lang.Error /page.xhtml But what If I get eg a hibernate ex: org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException Do I have to define error-pages for EVERY maybe occuring exception? Can't I just say "catch every exception"? Update Redirect on a 404 works.   • JSF: Cannot catch ViewExpiredException

    I'm developing a JSF 2.0 application on Glassfish v3 and i'm trying to handle the ViewExpiredException. But whatever i do, i always get a Glassfish error report instead of my own error page. To simulate the occurrence of the VEE, i inserted the following function into my backing bean, which fires the VEE. I'm triggering this function from my JSF page through a commandLink. I have this code try { //AN EXCEPTION IS GENERATED HERE!!! } catch { SqlService.RollbackTransaction(); throw; } Code above is called in this code try { //HERE IS CALLED THE METHOD THAT CONTAINS THE CODE ABOVE } catch (Exception ex) { HandleException(ex); } The exception passed as parameter to the method "HandleException" contains the line number of the "throw" line in the stack trace instead of the real line where the exception was generated. Anyone knows why this could be happening?

  • installed openstack using devstack install shell script but getting 500 error when i try opening dashboard

    I followed the instructions at http://devstack.org/guides/single-machine.html to install OpenStack. I first installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 PC using the officially supported Windows installer for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. And after that I followed the instructions at above page to install OpenStack. As per instructions, I should be able to access the dashboard aka Horizon, at http://192.168.1.4/ (thats the IP of the PC on which I installed Ubuntu-OpenStack). However I am getting a 500 error web page when I open that. How do I resolve this error? I want to set up a dev environment for OpenStack.   • try to attach to a database file but can't browse folder which contains the file

    I am trying to attach to database file (*.mdf, *.ldf) that I placed in the same folder as all my other SQL Server databases. I begin the attach by attempting to browse to the folder which contains the db files as well as all of my active database files. I select "attach Database" and click the "Add" button to add a database to the list of databases to attach to. When I do so, I get this error: TITLE: Locate Database Files - BESI-CHAD ------------------------------ D:\SQLdata\MSSQL10_50.SQLBESI\MSSQL\DATA Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The path is correct and, as I mentioned, it contains all of my other database files so I wouldn't think that permissions should be an issue, but here is what I see for that folder: Any idea why I cannot browse to that folder and attach to the db files that I have place there?

    Where can I set it to tell Thunderbird to always send as plain-text emails and never as HTML formatted messages? I hate HTML-based email, and always do everything possible to send my emails as plain text. Thunderbird is always pestering me with questions like "This recipient cannot receive HTML..." or "In order to sign this email, it needs to be converted to plain text..." Is there a way I can simply say to Thunderbird "Look, old chap, it's all plain text, so don't bother me any more, ever, again"?

    I've noticed that for many of the commands I use in bash I have actually learned how many letters of the command I must type before I can press [TAB] to have bash successfully autocomplete the command. For example when opening chromium I dont usually type the whole command but instead type $ chrom[TAB][ENTER] and bash successfully autocompletes the command to chromium before I hit the [ENTER] key. Is there a way to make autocomplete work without having to hit [TAB]? My general thinking is that if I type $ chrom[ENTER] bash could check and see that chrom isnt a valid command, but it would make sense to autocomplete it to chromium since that is the only command that starts with chrom

  • My computer resets when i try to install Windows 7 (USB/DVD)

    I had a troublesome software starting up when Windows 7 was starting and i had no way to remove it because i couldn't log in to Windows. Not even safe mode. But i used Hiren's Boot CD to edit the registry to stop that software from starting up... But my efforts were not useful as Windows kept on going to an ultimate freeze just before the login screen should have been shown. And just freezes and I cannot do anything. So i decided heck with it and i now want to format the disk and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. But now regardless of USB or DVD i use to boot the setup, it loads fine till you see the animating Windows and it just resets the laptop! Just plain resets! Hiren's Boot CD and Mini XP, strange enough but still works :( Any ideas what might be causing the laptop to reset in Windows 7 setup?

    I googled this and tried some solutions, but nothing seems to work. In the past, Hibernate worked fine. Someone told me that this can be caused by specific hardware, and I have lots of that, because this is a dev machine which we use to develop modules that interact with lots of different hardware. Moreover, this machine also uses RAID, which might have something to do. Is there any way to troubleshoot this by looking at some log file or using some tool?

  • What virtualization solution should I try next, after hitting problems w/ VMWare Player in dual-netw

    I have been using VMWare Player 2.5 for a while (Ubuntu guest on Vista host, 32-bit). VMWare had worked great until now but then I hit a brick wall: Due to some reorganization of my home network, the host machine now has to use a wireless connection to reach the Internet, while the printer, fileserver, and other important stuff are attached to a local gigabit hub. I have tried several tricks, such as editing the .vmx file, changing settings in vmnetcfg, etc, but I'm still unable to get the virtual Ubuntu box to connect each of the two virtual NICs to different networks (I did get it to recognize two NICs, but both DHCP'd onto the gigabit LAN). So, I'm ready to dump vmware for something with a little more low-level control of network settings. Virtualization is such a crowded space, I could spend months evaluating every product out there. I'm hoping for a shortcut... Can anyone recommend the best VM for my situation described above? Thanks

  • getting a weird error whenever I try restarting apache

    I'm trying to install apache, php5, mysql, and phpmyadmin. And I'm following a tutorial but this error keeps happening here's the error: apache2: Syntax error on line 227 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. ...fail! I've tried removing all of them and reinstalling but, to no avail. I'm pulling my hair out over this so, thanks in advance! =) edit: during the tutorial I screwed up and deleting something, lol, so I know that's the issue I just don't know what to do about it now
