• WPF Combobox binding: can't change selection.

  After wasting hours on this, following on the heels of my Last Problem, I'm starting to feel that Framework 4 is a master of subtle evil, or my PC is haunted. I have three comboboxes and a textbox on a WPF form, and I have an out-of-the-box Subsonic 3 ActiveRecord DAL. When I load this "edit record" form, the comboboxes fill correctly, they select the correct items, and the textbox has the correct text. I can change the TextBox text and save the record just fine, but the comboboxes CANNOT BE CHANGED. The lists drop down and highlight, but when you click on an item, the item selected stays the same. Comparing it with my last problem (link at the top of this message), I seem to have something really wierd with data sources going on. Maybe it's a Subsonic thing?

• Mimicking a HBox / VBox with CSS

  I'm an old school tables guy, and am pretty baffled when it comes to modern HTML. I'm trying to something as simple as vertical / horizontal layouts (i.e. Flex's hbox/vbox), but am having major difficulty replicating them. An old table would look something like this for an HBox: <table width="100%" height="100"> <tr valign="middle"> <td nowrap style="background-color:#CCC">I am text on grey</td> <td width="50%" valign="top">displays top</td> <td width="50%" align="right">Autosize Fill (displays bottom right)</td> </tr> </table> Now I'm trying to do this with div's, but to no avail. When using display:inline, I cannot set a percentage width -- it only takes explicit widths. When using float:left, settings 100% percentage width causes it to really be 100% and pushes the next div down. • Pyramind of DIVs

  Hi there, I'm trying to build a pyramid that's made of 4 DIVs. The layout looks like this: ------ | #1 | ------ ---------------- | #2 | #3 | #4 | ---------------- Moreover I need 3 additional DIVs starting at the center DIV (#3) and containing either #1, #2 or #3 additionally. These DIVs are used the build a sliding effect with jQueryUI later on. It's supposed to look like #1, #2 and #4 slide out of #3. The margin between the DIVs is supposed to be 2 pixels. I also want the whole block to be centered. Even with display: inline; and position: absolute; enabled on the visible and invisible DIVs I can't get the layout right. I used some negative margins and when it looked ok for the first time I saw that my top DIV was positioned outside of the html body. I suppose there is a more simple and elegant way to achieve what I want. • Problem saving as png a SVG generated by Raphael JS in a canvas

  Hi fellow SOers, I'm trying to convert a SVG generated by Raphael JS (and the user, since you can drag and rotate the images). I followed this Conversion of SVG to Jpeg but still can't get it. It must be easy but I can't put my finger on what I get wrong. Anyway, with this code, the variable img, which should have the converted image data, got the data of an empty png with the dimensions of the svg. The only thing I guess is that the svg generated by Raphael JS is not well formated for canvg (like, href of image should be xlink:href if I follow the W3C recommandations ) Anyone got an idea on this problem ? :D

• jquery with ASP.NET MVC - calling ajax enabled web service

  This is a bit of a continuation of a previous question. Now I'm trying to make a call to an AJAX enabled web service which I have defined within the ASP.NET MVC application (i.e. the MovieService.svc). But the service is never being called in my getMovies javascript function. This same technique of calling the AJAX web service works ok if I try it in a non ASP.NET MVC application, so it makes me wonder if maybe the ASP MVC routes are interfering with things somehow when it tries to make the AJAX web service call. Do you have any idea why my web service isn't getting called?   Hello, I have a big problem. I use additional controls for Wpf. One of them is Telerik RadWindow This control is already templated. Now I want to create custom Window with will inherit from RadWindow, and make custom template, eg. One base window will contains grid and two buttons, second base window will contain two grids (master - detail). The problem is that templates do not support inheritance. Perhaps is another way to template only the content of Winodow?   I have a contentplaceholder which needs to be centered (as close to absolute as possible) to the center of the page. The issue I am having is when, the browser moves to different resolutions the centering is thrown off. I have tried using divs and tables. I have switched out the precent with em units, and still no workie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Why cant I get a Thumb to be larger on a styled scrollbar in WPF.

  I have taken the MSDN templates for styling a scrollbar and have been trying to apply my different styles (Image on each track repeater and separate Image on the thumb) but I am unable to make the thumb change size. I have tried setting the Width on the Track.Thumb style and also in the ControlTemplate of the Thumb itself. For some reason the default size is only ever rendered even when the thumb actually occupies much more space. Does anyone know how to make the thumb render at the size that I want?   Hello everyone, I have a GridView which is pretty similar to the Google tutorial, except that I want to add the ImageViews on runtime (via a subactivity). The results are okay, but the layout of the View is messed up: The GridView doesn't fill the content of its parent, what do I have to do to design it properly? • CSS optimization - extra classes in dom or preprocessor-repetitive styling in css file?

  I'm starting on a fairly large project and I'm considering the option of using LESS for pre-processing my css. the useful thing about LESS is that you can define a mixin that contains for example: .border-radius(@radius) { -webkit-border-radius: @radius; -moz-border-radius: @radius; -o-border-radius: @radius; -ms-border-radius: @radius; border-radius: @radius; } and then use it in a class declaration as .rounded-div { .border-radius(10px); } to get the outputted css as: .rounded-div { -webkit-border-radius: 10px; -moz-border-radius: 10px; -o-border-radius: 10px; -ms-border-radius: 10px; border-radius: 10px; } this is extremely useful in the case of browser prefixes. However this same concept could be used to encapsulate commonly-used css, for example: .column-container { overflow: hidden; display: block; width: 100%; } .column(@width) { float: left; width: @width; } and then use this mixin whenever i need columns in my design: .my-column-outer { .column-container(); background: red; } .my-column-inner { .column(50%); font-color: yellow; } (of course, using the preprocessor we could easily expand this to be much more useful, eg. pass the number of columns and the container width as variables and have LESS determine the width of each column depending on the number of columns and container width!) the problem with this is that when compliled, my final css file would have 100 such declarations, copy&pasted, making the file huge and bloated and repetitive. The alternative to this would be to use a grid system which has predefined classes for each column-layout option, eg .c-50 ( with a "float: left; width:50%;" definition ), .c-33, .c-25 to accomodate for a 2-column, 3-column and 4-column layout and then use these classes to my dom. i really mislike the idea of the extra classes, from experience it results to bloated dom (creating extra divs just to attach the grid classes to). Also the most basic tutorial for html/css would tell you that the dom should be separated from the styling - grid classes are styling related! to me, its the same as attaching a "border-radius-10" class to the .rounded-div example above! on the other hand, the large css file that would result from the repetitive code is also a disadvantage so i guess my question is, which one would you recommend? and which do you use? and, which solution is best for optimization? apart from the larger file size, has there even been any research on whether browser renders multiple classes faster than a large css file, or the other way round? tnx! i'd love to hear your opinion!

• Has Javascript developed beyond what it was originally designed to do?

  I've been talking with a friend about the purpose of Javascript, when and how it should be used, etc. He quoted that: JavaScript was designed to add interactivity to HTML pages [...] JavaScript gives HTML designers a programming tool HTML authors are normally not programmers, but JavaScript is a scripting language with a very simple syntax! Almost anyone can put small "snippets" of code into their HTML pages JavaScript can react to events A JavaScript can be set to execute when something happens, like when a page has finished loading or when a user clicks on an HTML element JavaScript can read and write HTML elements A JavaScript can read and change the content of an HTML element JavaScript can be used to validate data A JavaScript can be used to validate form data before it is submitted to a server. This saves the server from extra processing JavaScript can be used to detect the visitor's browser - A JavaScript can be used to detect the visitor's browser, and - depending on the browser - load another page specifically designed for that browser. JavaScript can be used to create cookies - A JavaScript can be used to store and retrieve information on the visitor's computer. However, it seems like Javascript's getting used to do a lot more than these days. My friend also advocates against using Javascript's OOP functionality, claiming that "you shouldn't be processing data, merely validating." Is Javascript really limited to validating data and making flashy graphics on a web page? He goes on to claim "you shouldn't be attempting to access databases through javascript" and also says " in general you don't want to be doing your heavy lifting in javascript". I can't say I agree with his opinion, but I'd like to get some more input on this. So, my question: Has Javascript evolved from the definition above to something more powerful, has the way we use it changed, or am I just plain wrong? While I realize this is a subjective question, I can't find any more information on it, so a few links would be good, if nothing else. I'm not looking for a debate, just an answer.

• How to cache dynamic javascript/jquery/ajax/json content with Akamai

  Trying to wrap my head around how things are cached on a CDN and it is new territory for me. In the document we received about sending in environment requests, it says "Dynamically-generated content will not benefit much from EdgeSuite". I feel like this is a simplified statement and there has to be a way to make it so you cache dynamically generated content if the tools are configured correctly. The site we are working with runs off a wordpress database, and uses javascript and ajax to build the pages, based on the json objects that php scripts have generated. The process - user's browser this URL, browser talks to edgesuite tools which will have cached certain pre-defined elements, and then requests from the host web server anything that is not cached, once edgesuite has compiled a combination of the two, it sends that information back to the browser. Can we not simply cache all json objects (and of course images, js, css) and therefore the web browser never has to hit the host server's database, at which point in essence, we have cached our dynamic content? Does anyone have any pointers on the most efficient configuration for this type of system -- Akamai/CDN -- to served javascript/ajax/json generated pages that ideally already hit pre-cached json data? Any and all feedback is welcome!

• April 2013 Release of the Ajax Control Toolkit

  I’m excited to announce the April 2013 release of the Ajax Control Toolkit. For this release, we focused on improving two controls: the AjaxFileUpload and the MaskedEdit controls. You can download the latest release from CodePlex at http://AjaxControlToolkit.CodePlex.com or, better yet, you can execute the following NuGet command within Visual Studio 2010/2012: There are three builds of the Ajax Control Toolkit: .NET 3.5, .NET 4.0, and .NET 4.5. A Better AjaxFileUpload Control We completely rewrote the AjaxFileUpload control for this release. We had two primary goals. First, we wanted to support uploading really large files. In particular, we wanted to support uploading multi-gigabyte files such as video files or application files. Second, we wanted to support showing upload progress on as many browsers as possible. The previous version of the AjaxFileUpload could show upload progress when used with Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox but not when used with Apple Safari or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The new version of the AjaxFileUpload control shows upload progress when used with any browser. Using the AjaxFileUpload Control Let me walk-through using the AjaxFileUpload in the most basic scenario. And then, in following sections, I can explain some of its more advanced features. Here’s how you can declare the AjaxFileUpload control in a page: <ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:AjaxFileUpload ID="AjaxFileUpload1" AllowedFileTypes="mp4" OnUploadComplete="AjaxFileUpload1_UploadComplete" runat="server" /> The exact appearance of the AjaxFileUpload control depends on the features that a browser supports. In the case of Google Chrome, which supports drag-and-drop upload, here’s what the AjaxFileUpload looks like: Notice that the page above includes two Ajax Control Toolkit controls: the AjaxFileUpload and the ToolkitScriptManager control. You always need to include the ToolkitScriptManager with any page which uses Ajax Control Toolkit controls. The AjaxFileUpload control declared in the page above includes an event handler for its UploadComplete event. This event handler is declared in the code-behind page like this: protected void AjaxFileUpload1_UploadComplete(object sender, AjaxControlToolkit.AjaxFileUploadEventArgs e) { // Save uploaded file to App_Data folder AjaxFileUpload1.SaveAs(MapPath("~/App_Data/" + e.FileName)); } This method saves the uploaded file to your website’s App_Data folder. You need to declare this handler in your application’s root web.config file like this: <configuration> <system.web> <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.5" /> <httpRuntime targetFramework="4.5" maxRequestLength="42949672" /> <httpHandlers> <add verb="*" path="AjaxFileUploadHandler.axd" type="AjaxControlToolkit.AjaxFileUploadHandler, AjaxControlToolkit"/> </httpHandlers> </system.web> <system.webServer> <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false"/> <handlers> <add name="AjaxFileUploadHandler" verb="*" path="AjaxFileUploadHandler.axd" type="AjaxControlToolkit.AjaxFileUploadHandler, AjaxControlToolkit"/> </handlers> <security> <requestFiltering> <requestLimits maxAllowedContentLength="4294967295"/> </requestFiltering> </security> </system.webServer> </configuration> Notice that the web.config file above also contains configuration settings for the maxRequestLength and maxAllowedContentLength. You need to assign large values to these configuration settings — as I did in the web.config file above — in order to accept large file uploads. Supporting Chunked File Uploads Because one of our primary goals with this release was support for large file uploads, we added support for client-side chunking. When you upload a file using a browser which fully supports the HTML5 File API — such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox — then the file is uploaded in multiple chunks. You can see chunking in action by opening F12 Developer Tools in your browser and observing the Network tab: Notice that there is a crazy number of distinct post requests made (about 360 distinct requests for a 1 gigabyte file). Each post request looks like this: http://localhost:24338/AjaxFileUploadHandler.axd?contextKey={DA8BEDC8-B952-4d5d-8CC2-59FE922E2923}&fileId=B7CCE31C-6AB1-BB28-2940-49E0C9B81C64 &fileName=Sita_Sings_the_Blues_480p_2150kbps.mp4&chunked=true&firstChunk=false Each request posts another chunk of the file being uploaded. Notice that the request URL includes a chunked=true parameter which indicates that the browser is breaking the file being uploaded into multiple chunks. Showing Upload Progress on All Browsers The previous version of the AjaxFileUpload control could display upload progress only in the case of browsers which fully support the HTML5 File API. The new version of the AjaxFileUpload control can display upload progress in the case of all browsers. If a browser does not fully support the HTML5 File API then the browser polls the server every few seconds with an Ajax request to determine the percentage of the file that has been uploaded. This technique of displaying progress works with any browser which supports making Ajax requests. There is one catch. Be warned that this new feature only works with the .NET 4.0 and .NET 4.5 versions of the AjaxControlToolkit. To show upload progress, we are taking advantage of the new ASP.NET HttpRequest.GetBufferedInputStream() and HttpRequest.GetBufferlessInputStream() methods which are not supported by .NET 3.5. For example, here is what the Network tab looks like when you use the AjaxFileUpload with Microsoft Internet Explorer: Here’s what the requests in the Network tab look like: GET /WebForm1.aspx?contextKey={DA8BEDC8-B952-4d5d-8CC2-59FE922E2923}&poll=1&guid=9206FF94-76F9-B197-D1BC-EA9AD282806B HTTP/1.1 Notice that each request includes a poll=1 parameter. This parameter indicates that this is a polling request to get the size of the file buffered on the server. Here’s what the response body of a request looks like when about 20% of a file has been uploaded: Buffering to a Temporary File When you upload a file using the AjaxFileUpload control, the file upload is buffered to a temporary file located at Path.GetTempPath(). When you call the SaveAs() method, as we did in the sample page above, the temporary file is copied to a new file and then the temporary file is deleted. If you don’t call the SaveAs() method, then you must ensure that the temporary file gets deleted yourself. For example, if you want to save the file to a database then you will never call the SaveAs() method and you are responsible for deleting the file.   Years ago I was the lead developer of a large Scrapbook Web Site. One of the things I implemented was to allow shoppers to find Scrapbook papers and embellishments of like colors (“more like this color”). Below is the base algorithm I wrote to extract the color from an image. It worked out pretty well. I took the returned values and stored them in an associated table for the products. Yet another algorithm was used to SELECT near matches. This algorithm has turned out to be very handy for me. I have used it for borders and subtle outlined text overlays. I am sure you will find more creative uses for it. After As soon as you have installed the extension and restarted Firefox the “Tab Bar” will have automatically moved to the top of the browser. You will most likely notice a slight decrease in tab height as well (which occurred during our tests). To move the “Tab Bar” back and forth between the top and default locations just select/deselect “Tab Bar on top” in the “Toolbars Context Menu”. You can quickly reduce the size of the upper UI after hiding some of the other toolbars and go even further if you like using extensions that will hide the “Title Bar”.
