• What online games would let me practice AI development?

  I am working on a project experimenting with Artificial Intelligence design methodologies for online world avatars. Online world here is quite open to interpretation; Second Life is just as applicable as Counter Strike, for example. To carry out these experiments, I must first develop an intelligent agent for the world in question. However, I am honestly quite stuck as to which game I could use for this. My preference was to develop an intelligent "bot" to play an MMORPG, but the legal restrictions of such games prevent me. Likewise with most FPS games the use of an intelligent agent in place of a human player is considered cheating. The alternative, of course, is to create an NPC bot; an intelligent agent that populates the world alongside the player(s) rather than replacing a particular player. However, I'm struggling to find a game that would enable me to create an intelligent opponent either. I suppose the main requirements would be a game allows a third party program to use the function calls usually utilised by players and read feedback on the state of the world. Quake III and Unreal Tournament have been suggested before, but they have already been the subject of work on this research project. Short of writing my own online game from scratch, what games would allow me, through middleware, an API, or otherwise, to create either an artificially intelligent player or a bot?

• Ubuntu 11.04 64bits Keeps Randomly Freezing

  This has been a real headache for me since the number of freezes has increase from twice a week to about 1 or twice a day. The system just halts and nothing can be done but hitting the restart button. At the beginning I thought it was related to Flash since I was getting random freezes when playing full screen flash videos online. I also thought it could be the wireless pci card. But the system has freezed using browsing around GNOME. The truth is, the freezes are really random and strange. I checked this thread Ubuntu keeps randomly freezing and try to ssh my computer using another one, but I could not ssh since it was really totally frozen. NumLock or CapsLock wasn't responding or blinking. Since I could not ssh I, also ignored this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze According to my wife, the system has also halted under Win7 Pro 64bit but with less frequency. Here is my system configuration Intel Core i7 2600k ASRock Z68 Extreme3 gen3 Motherboard Crucial M4 128GB CT128M4SSD2 SSD WD Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA II G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR2 OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply Rosewill RNX-N300X PCI Wireless Adapter No external Graphics Card I remove the Wireless card and used Ethernet to see if the problem was the that, but I got a freeze after doing that. I also ran memtest86 and everything was ok. The only other thing I might suspect of is the SSD. I will try to clone the SSD to a HDD to see if that solve the problem. At this point I am stuck with the freezes. Do anyone have a clue of why this is happening and how can i solve this?

• Can't access computer

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

As i have learnt ASP.NET and when I inquired about the expense in Hosting of my website i got the recommendation to develop my web app using the combination PHP and MYSQL instead the asp.net + ms sql. And the problem is I don't know PHP. should I learn PHP and or work in what i m comfortable with and should try to cover whole deserved money. (as it is my first project so i m also advised that i may got some loss in starting but contrary to this i don't want to go in loss and want to earn appropriate profit)

• I am having a hard time learning Python, is it just me? [closed]

  For the past two weeks I am trying to learn Python and a framework for web development, while doing so I learned a lot but not what I was looking for. I did manage to get everything set up and running, followed tutorials, but I still have not managed to create a navigation bar and a simple template website. My goal is to create web applications (like a blog) and perhaps platforms similar to stackoverflow. In which language was stackoverflow created in? I believe that Python Django or Python Tornado (which I tried) is more for people who have learned desktop application development. It is hard for me to make sense out of the complex and fragmented system. I'm able to develop with PHP and have already created blogs and similar applications. If Python and a framework is not for me, what type of language would be for me, which languages are used for these type of platforms, I would like to develop myself? I only omitted PHP because I found it later on a bit too inheriting, and the code is hardly readable and becomes quickly cluttered, I love how readable Python code is.

• Windows Server or Linux for final project

  A few weeks ago I came up with an idea to develop a mobile app which will direct students in my university to the nearest printer availiable. The whole thing is part of my final project. The Android based app will need to perform the following tasks: The user's location in the campus is sent to the server. Assume this part works just fine. The server sends an SNMP request to the printers in the user's vicinity. I'll probably use PHP or Python for that part. The data requested by SNMP is processed and sent back to the client My question concerns the server. The university's IT manager offered me a designated server for development, which sounds great. Now I need to choose which OS I want installed on the server - Windows server or Linux (don't know which versions). I don't have any server programming/operating experince, but generally speaking I feel more comfortable in Windows enviroment (just because that has always been my OS). I don't have much time for learning a new OS, but when does it make sense generally to host or develop server side applications on a Windows environment versus a Linux environment?

• current_user and Comments on Posts - Create another association or loop posts? - Ruby on Rails

  I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails and have just added an authentication piece and it is working nicely. I am now trying to go back through my application to adjust the code such that it only shows information that is associated with a certain user. Currently, Users has_many :posts and Posts has_many :comments. When a post is created I am successfully inserting the user_id into the post table. Additionally I am successfully only displaying the posts that belong to a certain user upon their login in the /views/posts/index.html.erb view. My problem is with the comments. For instance on the home page, when logged in, a user will see only posts that they have written, but comments from all users on all posts. Which is not what I want and need some direction in correcting. I want only to display the comments written on all of the logged in users posts. Do I need to create associations such that comments also belong to user? Or is there a way to adjust my code to simply loop through post to display this data. • Casting an object using 'as' returns null: myObject = newObject as MyObject; // null

  I am trying to create a custom object in AS3 to pass information to and from a server, which in this case will be Red5. In the below screenshots you will see that I am able to send a request for an object from as3, and receive it successfully from the java server. However, when I try to cast the received object to my defined objectType using 'as', it takes the value of null. It is my understanding that that when using "as" your checking to see if your variable is a member of the specified data type. If the variable is not, then null will be returned. This screenshot illustrates that I am have successfully received my object 'o' from red5 and I am just about to cast it to the (supposedly) identical datatype testObject of LobbyData: However, when testObject = o as LobbyData; runs, it returns null. :( Below you will see my specifications both on the java server and the as3 client. Oracle Identity Manager System Architecture Oracle Identity Governance includes Oracle Identity Manager,Oracle Identity Analytics and Oracle Privileged Account Manager. I will discuss Oracle Identity Manager architecture in this post.  In basically, Oracle Identity Manager is a n-tier standard  Java EE application that is deployed on Oracle WebLogic Server and uses  a database .  Oracle Identity Manager presentation tier has three different screen and two different client. Identity Self Service and Identity System Administration are web-based thin client. Design Console is a Java Swing Client that communicates directly with the Business Service Tier.  Identity Self Service provides end-user operations and delegated administration features. System Administration provides system administration functions. And Design Console mostly use for development management operations such as  create and manage adapter and process form,notification , workflow desing, reconciliation rules etc. Business service tier is implemented as an Enterprise JavaBeans(EJB) application. So you can extense Oracle Identity Manager capabilities.  -The SMPL and EJB APIs allow develop custom plug-ins such as management roles or identities.  -Identity Services allow use core business capabilites of Oracle Identity Manager such as The User provisioning or reconciliation service. -Integration Services allow develop custom connectors or adapters for various deployment needs. -Platform Services allow use Entitlement Servers, Scheduler or SOA composites. The Middleware tier allows you using capabilites ADF Faces,SOA Suites, Scheduler, Entitlement Server and BI Publisher Reports. So OIM allows you to configure workflows uses Oracle SOA Suite or define authorization policies use with Oracle Entitlement Server. Also you can customization of OIM UI without need to write code and using ADF Business Editor  you can extend custom attributes to user,role,catalog and other objects. Data tiers; Oracle Identity Manager is driven by data and metadata which provides flexibility and adaptability to Oracle Identity Manager functionlities.  -Database has five schemas these are OIM,SOA,MDS,OPSS and OES. Oracle Identity Manager uses database to store runtime and configuration data. And all of entity, transactional and audit datas are stored in database. -Metadata Store; customizations and personalizations are stored in file-based repository or database-based repository.And Oracle Identity Manager architecture,the metadata is in Oracle Identity Manager database to take advantage of some of the advanced performance and availability features that this mode provides. -Identity Store; Oracle Identity Manager provides the ability to integrate an LDAP-based identity store into Oracle Identity Manager architecture.  Oracle Identity Manager uses the human workflow module of Oracle Service Oriented Architecture Suite. OIM connects to SOA using the T3 URL which is front-end URL for the SOA server.Oracle Identity Manager uses embedded Oracle Entitlement Server for authorization checks in OIM engine.  Several Oracle Identity Manager modules use JMS queues. Each queue is processed by a separate Message Driven Bean (MDB), which is also part of the Oracle Identity Manager application. Message producers are also part of the Oracle Identity Manager application. Oracle Identity Manager uses a scheduled jobs for some activities in the background.Some of scheduled jobs come with Out-Of-Box such as the disable users after the end date of the users or you can define your custom schedule jobs with Oracle Identity Manager APIs. You can use Oracle BI Publisher for reporting Oracle Identity Manager transactions or audit data which are in database.   On Sunday evening, September 30, 2012, Jason McGee, IBM Distinguished Engineer and Chief Architect Cloud Computing, along with John Duimovich IBM Distinguished Engineer and Java CTO, gave an information- and idea-rich keynote that left Java developers with much to ponder.Their focus was on the challenges to make Java more efficient and productive given the hardware and software environments of 2012. “One idea that is very interesting is the idea of multi-tenancy,” said McGee, “and how we can move up the spectrum. In traditional systems, we ran applications on dedicated middleware, operating systems and hardware. A lot of customers still run that way. Now people introduce hardware virtualization and share the hardware. That is good but there is a lot more we can do. We can share middleware and the application itself.” McGee challenged developers to better enable the Java language to function in these higher density models. He spoke about the need to describe patterns that help us grasp the full environment that an application needs, whether it’s a web or full enterprise application. Developers need to understand the resources that an application interacts with in a way that is simple and straightforward. The task is to then automate that deployment so that the complexity of infrastructure can be by-passed and developers can live in a simpler world where the cloud can automatically configure the needed environment. McGee argued that the key, something IBM has been working on, is to use a simpler pattern that allows a cloud-based architecture to embrace the entire infrastructure required for an application and make it highly available, scalable and able to recover from failure. The cloud-based architecture would automate the complexity of setting up and managing the infrastructure. IBM has been trying to realize this vision for customers so they can describe their Java application environment simply and allow the cloud to automate the deployment and management of applications. “The point,” explained McGee, “is to package the executable used to describe applications, to drop it into a shared system and let that system provide some intelligence about how to deploy and manage those applications.”John Duimovich on Improvements in JavaMcGee then brought onstage IBM’s Distinguished Engineer and CTO for Java, John Duimovich, who showed the audience ways to deploy Java applications more efficiently.Duimovich explained that, “When you run lots of copies of Java in the cloud or any hypervisor virtualized system, there are a lot of duplications of code and jar files. IBM has a facility called ‘shared classes’ where we put shared code, read only artefacts in a cache that is sharable across hypervisors.” By putting JIT code in ahead of time, he explained that the application server will use 20% less memory and operate 30% faster.  He described another example of how the JVM allows for the maximum amount of sharing that manages the tenants and file sockets and memory use through throttling and control. Duimovich touched on the “thin is in” model and IBM’s Liberty Profile and lightweight runtime for the cloud, which allows for greater efficiency in interacting with the cloud.Duimovich discussed the confusion Java developers experience when, for example, the hypervisor tells them that that they have 8 and then 4 and then 16 cores. “Because hypervisors are virtualized, they can change based on resource needs across the hypervisor layer. You may have 10 instances of an operation system and you may need to reallocate memory, " explained Duimovich.  He showed how to resize LPARs, reallocate CPUs and migrate applications as needed. He explained how application servers can resize thread pools and better use resources based on information from the hypervisors.Java Challenges in Hardware and SoftwareMcGee ended the keynote with a summary of upcoming hardware and software challenges for the Java platform. He noted that one reason developers love Java is it allows them to ignore differences in hardware. He stated that the most important things happening in hardware were in network and storage – in developments such as the speed of SSD, the exploitation of high-speed, low-latency networking, and recent developments such as storage-class memory, and non-volatile main memory. “So we are challenged to maintain the benefits of Java and the abstraction it provides from hardware while still exploiting the new innovations in hardware,” said McGee.McGee discussed transactional messaging applications where developers send messages transactionally persist a message to storage, something traditionally done by backing messages on spinning disks, something mostly outdated. “Now,” he pointed out, “we would use SSD and store it in Flash and get 70,000 messages a second. If we stored it using a PCI express-based flash memory device, it is still Flash but put on a PCI express bus on a card closer to the CPU. This way I get 300,000 messages a second and 25% improvement in latency.” McGee’s central point was that hardware has a huge impact on the performance and scalability of applications. New technologies are enabling developers to build classes of Java applications previously unheard of. “We need to be able to balance these things in Java – we need to maintain the abstraction but also be able to exploit the evolution of hardware technology,” said McGee. According to McGee, IBM's current focus is on systems wherein hardware and software are shipped together in what are called Expert Integrated Systems – systems that are pre-optimized, and pre-integrated together. McGee closed IBM’s engaging and thought-provoking keynote by pointing out that the use of Java in complex applications is increasingly being augmented by a host of other languages with strong communities around them – JavaScript, JRuby, Scala, Python and so forth. Java developers now must understand the strengths and weaknesses of such newcomers as applications increasingly involve a complex interconnection of languages.

• Using Javascript to call the Azure Blob Storage REST API

  I'm developing a Flash app that saves files to the Azure Blob Storage API. I've learned that you should use the REST API directly rather than a go-between WCF service as this is the most efficient (using a web role is a bottleneck). The problem is that Flash can't do PUT or DELETE methods over Http and has to use external Javascript. This is not an area that I'm familiar with and need some advice/links to examples of using Javascript to work with the Storage API (I've obviously Googled this to no avail). Is this even possible? The Javascript would be hosted in a web role on the same domain. Many thanks, Ed

• Using long polling with WinForms Clients in .NET

  Hi We need to develop a .NET application, basically a WinForms client, which needs to be notified of changes only from the server to update the UI only in case of necessity and not every time. We initially thought of NetTCPBinding but understood that it has problems with firewalls across domains and secure networks. We now consider long-polling as a viable option but we could only find this being used with WPF and XAML clients. For example, http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/duplexhttp But we could not find anything with WinForms. My opinion is that long-polling has to do with WCF and does not matter what UI technology is used (within .NET). Do you think it is possible to use long-polling with a custom WCF channel for WinForms? I am on the way to develop a POC but dont have much time. Any help in the right direction is much appreciated. • ExternalInterface in flex calling javascript function works for mozilla/chrome but NOT IE

• chat application: pubsubhub vs xmpp

  I'm unsure on the best stack to build a chat application. Currently I'm thinking of two main options: facebook tornado cons: does not use the main chat protocol xmpp but pubsubhubbub pros: i really like its simplicity for development (webserver + webframework); pubsubhubbub also seems simpler as a protocol than xmpp; and i know python xmpp + bosch, punjab, ejabberd cons: don't know erlang; overall seems a bit harder to develop pros: uses xmpp protocol The chat app will need to have the following: Private messages Public rooms Private rooms Chat history for rooms (not forever, just the last n messages) html embedding url to chat room Both options seem scalable so that's not really my worry (we're thinking of running the app in amazon's ec2 as well). I know there's a project that builds a xmpp server using tornado but it's not ready for production use and our deadline isn't that big. Basically my main worry is ease of development vs somehow regretting later using pubsubhubbub to develop a chat app but I read somewhere that PubSubHubbub might eventually replace XMPP as REST replaced SOAP - so what do you think?

• Pixel Shader Effect Examples

  I've seen a number of pixel-shader effect examples, stuff like swirl on an image. But I'm wondering if anyone knows of any examples or tutorials for more practical uses of shader effects? I'm not saying that a swirl effect doesn't have it's uses, it's just that many of the examples I've found have the basic effect explained and don't go into how it might be used subtly with another effect or transition to produce a wonderful effect. There's a video here, that outlines all the WPF Effects Library, but I'm not sure how I would use some of them in a practical context. For example, when Flash 8 came out with effects like blur, I found a wonderful video that showed how to use the blur effect to create a cool effect with speeding text, that video inspired many ideas of what I could do with the effects in Flash 8. I'm looking for something similar with Pixel Shader Effects.

• How to catch all exceptions in Flex?

  When I run a Flex application in the debug flash player I get an exception pop up as soon as something unexpected happened. However when a customer uses the application he does not use the debug flash player. In this case he does not get an exception pop up, but he UI is not working. So for supportability reasons, I would like to catch any exception that can happen anywhere in the Flex UI and present an error message in a Flex internal popup. By using Java I would just encapsulate the whole UI code in a try/catch block, but with MXML applications in Flex I do not know, where I could perform such a general try/catch.

Where these OFX API's are available? Are they free or we need to pay and get access to those API? What is data format ( xml, xml/atom, json) ? Any article or document to understand this requirement and start developing? Any open source software where I can download the code and customize it? FYI : I am working on C#.Net. • sIFR 3 HTML text does not display, .sIFR-alternate causing problem

  It seems my sIFR 3 text does not show HTML text if the Flash text is not displayed. Here's one of the pages in question: http://www.jeremyschultz.com/client/orchardplace/website/beta/volunteer/ One person has reported not seeing anything when viewing this page, and I can recreate it by removing the Flash text with Firebug. Testing with Firebug also suggests the .sIFR-alternate class is what's causing this: when I remove it, the text shows up, and it disappears again when I restore it. I copied the original CSS and also tried applying a few new CSS rules to .sIFR-alternate but nothing has solved it. What do you think? Jeremy [email protected]

• Why use wmode at all?

  What benefit does using wmode give if you're not needing transparency? I've look through this forum and found posts talking about the different wmode attributes here, but I want to know why I need to use it in the first place and if removing it will break anything else. My application uses wmode="opaque" at the moment but it seems to stop scrolling in Firefox. I use JavaScript focus() to allow the user to type directly into the flash ap. Otherwise I'm using the stock standard Flex Builder 3 HTML template. Edit: The ap uses the whole page, without any additional elements needing to be displayed over the flash part.
