• "PGError: no connection to the server" after idle

  After my application sits idle overnight, when I try to access it in the morning I get a 500 Internal server error and the logs indicate "PGError: no connection to the server". After this first request if I refresh the page again everything is fine. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with apache 2, Passenger 3.0.2, Rails 2.3.8, and Postgres 8.4 on a remote server. Any ideas how to fix this? • Is this a dangerous locking pattern?

  I have an enumerator written in C#, which looks something like this: try { ReadWriteLock.EnterReadLock(); yield foo; yield bar; yield bash; } finally { ReadWriteLock.ExitReadLock(); } I believe this may be a dangerous locking pattern, as the ReadWriteLock will only be released if the enumeration is complete, otherwise the lock is left hanging and is never released, am I correct? If so, what's the best way to combat this?

• Fix a box 250px from top of content with wrapping content

  I'm having trouble left aligning a related links div inside a block of text, exactly 250 pixels from the top of a content area, while retaining word wrapping. I attempted to do this with absolute positioning, but the text in the content area doesn't wrap around the content. I would just fix the related links div in the content, however, this will display on an article page, so I would like for it to be done without placing it in a specific location in the content.   I'm having a problem with a child list not hovering correctly in IE7. Other browsers and IE7 seem to work fine. • C# problem with two threads and hardware access

  I'm creating an application which communicates with the device via FT2232H USB/RS232 converter. For communication I'm using FTD2XX_NET.dll library from FTDI website. I'm using two threads: first thread continuously reads data from the device the second thread is the main thread of the Windows Form Application I've got a problem when I'm trying to write any data to the device while the receiver's thread is running. The main thread simply hangs up on ftdiDevice.Write function. I tried to synchronize both threads so that only one thread can use Read/Write function at the same time, but it didn't help. Below code responsible for the communication. Note that following functions are methods of FtdiPort class. • Play video while downloading into local disk [AIR]

  Hello guys, Using NetStream, I can create progressive video player. But can I save the downloaded chunk to my local disk in AIR?? My first idea is that, download part of file into local disk, let NetStream pointing to that file, and then appends the chunks to that file (FileMode.APPEND) periodically. But it does not work and seems that NetStream would 'lock' the file preventing write operation. Any ideas?

If this is the case, how do I make it so that Hibernate points to the exists ServiceType instead of trying to insert it again?

• Change the location of the Auto Recovery information in SQL Server Management Studio.

  Our local IT has our My Documents folder on a network path. This causes a problem from MSQL Server management studio as it saves it auto recovery information every 10 min it will lock up as its doing its save. I found where VS2008 saved its setting but I can not find out how to change it out of My Documents for this. Does anyone know where that setting is located?

• Linux synchronization with FIFO waiting queue

  Are there locks in Linux where the waiting queue is FIFO? This seems like such an obvious thing, and yet I just discovered that pthread mutexes aren't FIFO, and semaphores apparently aren't FIFO either (I'm working on kernel 2.4 (homework))... Does Linux have a lock with FIFO waiting queue, or is there an easy way to make one with existing mechanisms?

What I'm lacking is a little direction Is friendly name able to be written inside the connected USB Micro chips by the firmware programmer? (I'm thinking of this to identify the device even further, or is this to help identify Bulk data transfer devices like memory sticks and camera's) Can I use SPDRP_REMOVAL_POLICY_OVERRIDE to some how reset these polices What else can I do with the registry details. Identifying when some one unplugs a device The program is using (in windows XP standard) I used a documented windows event that did not respond. Can I read a registry value to identify if its still connected? using CreateFileA (DevicePath) to send and receive data I have read when some one unplugs in the middle of a data transfer its difficult clearing resources. what can IoCreateDevice do for me and how does one use it for that task This two way point of connection status and system lock up situations is very concerning. • Symfony : ajax call cause server to queue next queries

  Hello, I've a problem with my application when an ajax call on the server takes too much time : it queue all the others queries from the user until it's done server side (I realized that canceling the call client side has no effect and the user still have to wait). My problem is that I want to avoid this behavior. I'm on a LAMP server and I'm looking in a way to inform the server that the user aborted the query with function like connection_aborted(), do you think that's the way to go ? Also, I know that the longest part of this PHP script is a MySQL query, so even if I know that connection_aborted() can detect that the user cancel the call, I still need to check this during the MySQL query... I'm not really sure that PHP can handle this kind of "event". So if you have any better idea, I can't wait to hear it. Thank you. Update : After further investigation, I found that the problem happen only with the Symfony framework (that I omitted to precise, my bad). It seems that an Ajax call lock any other future call. It maybe related to the controller or the routing system, I'm looking into it. Also for those interested by the problem here is my new test case : -new project with Symfony 1.4.3, default configuration, I just created an app and a default module. -jquery 1.4 for the ajax query. • Why do condition variables sometimes erroneously wake up?

  I've known for eons that the way you use a condition variable is lock while not task_done wait on condition variable unlock Because sometimes condition variables will spontaneously wake. But I've never understood why that's the case. In the past I've read it's expensive to make a condition variable that doesn't have that behavior, but nothing more than that. So... why do you need to worry about falsely being woken up when waiting on a condition variable?
