  I am having trouble putting text read from a file into an array list. My text looks like this: 438;MIA;JFK;10:55;1092;447 638;JFK;MIA;19:45;1092;447 689;ATL;DFW;12:50;732;448 etc...   i'm trying to include a maven java project into my android project. the maven project is the greader-unofficial project which allows developers access to google reader accounts, and handles all of the http transactions and URI/URL building, making grabbing feeds and items from google reader transparent to the developer. the project is available here: http://code.google.com/p/greader-unofficial/ the code is originally written for the standard jdk and uses classes from java.net that are not a part of the standard Android SDK. i actually tried to manually resolve all dependencies and ran into a problem when i got as far as including com.sun.syndication pieces required by the class be.lechtitseb.google.reader.api.util.AtomUtil.java... some of the classes in java.net that are in the standard jdk (i'm using 1.6) are not in the Android SDK. in addition, resolving all of these dependencies manually is just ridiculous when i'm compiling a maven project that should be pretty simple. however, i can use maven to compile the sources with no issue. how can i include this maven project, which is dependent on the complete jdk, into my android project in such a way that it will compile so that i can access the GoogleReader class from my android project? and for the record, i don't have the expertise to rewrite this entire api to work with the standard Android SDK.

  I am porting Java code in .NET and I am stuck in the following lines that (behave unexpectedly in .NET). Java: Map<Set<State>, Set<State>> sets = new HashMap<Set<State>, Set<State>>(); Set<State> p = new HashSet<State>(); if (!sets.containsKey(p)) { ... } The equivalent .NET code could possibly be: IDictionary<HashSet<State>, HashSet<State>> sets = new Dictionary<HashSet<State>, HashSet<State>>(); HashSet<State> p = new HashSet<State>(); if (!sets.containsKey(p)) { /* (Add to a list). Always get here in .NET (??) */ } However the code comparison fails, the program think that "sets" never contain Key "p" and eventually results in OutOfMemoryException. Perhaps I am missing something, object equality and identity might be different between Java and .NET. I tried implementing IComparable and IEquatable in class State but the results were the same. Edit: What the code does is: If the sets does not contain key "p" (which is a HashSet) it is going to add "p" at the end of a LinkedList. • Mysql search design

  I'm designing a mysql database, and i'd like some input on an efficient way to store blog/article data for searching. Right now, I've made a separate column that stores the content to be searched - no duplicate words, no words shorter than four letters, and no words that are too common. So, essentially, it's a list of keywords from the original article. Also searched would be a list of tags, and the title field. I'm not quite sure how mysql indexes fulltext columns, so would storing the data like that be ineffective, or redundant somehow? A lot of the articles are on the same topic, so would the score be hurt by so many of the rows having similar keywords? Also, for this project, solutions like sphinx, lucene or google custom seach can't be used -- only php & mysql. Thanks!

  I'm an experienced developer (WPF) moving over to Android development. My question: an app I am developing allows the user to browse their local storage (such as SDCARD) and select a file. Now, should I simply create a new Activity (after the user has made a selection) to handle what I want to have the app do with that chosen file, -or- is the better approach to pass the path/name of the selected file back to the main Activity and let IT launch the next Activity? In other words, is the better practice to have the main Activity launch other (support) activities, or is it perfectly ok and normal to have one activity chain to another and on and on? Thanks!

  Hi, I was looking at some of the examples from the Deitel and Deitel's book for Programming in Java, and one of the first examples is a very simple Swing display. However, when I just add this to my main method, it gives me a host of errors. Specifically : Multiple markers at this line - Unhandled exception type IllegalAccessException - Unhandled exception type InstantiationException - Unhandled exception type ClassNotFoundException - Unhandled exception type UnsupportedLookAndFeelException However when I use it as part of a try/catch exception loop (is that what it is called?) as detailed on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1590863/getting-java-applications-to-look-native-on-windows-how , I get the program running properly. Could anyone tell me in simple language why this is so? As in, why can't I directly get the System look and feel; why do I have to use it with exception handling? I'm new to Java, and OOP in general, so I'm sorry if I'm being too simplistic.

  Currently I am designing a database for use in our company. We are using SQL Server 2008. The database will hold data gathered from several customers. The goal of the database is to acquire aggregate benchmark numbers over several customers. Recently, I have become worried with the fact that one table in particular will be getting very big. Each customer has approximately 20.000.000 rows of data, and there will soon be 30 customers in the database (if not more). A lot of queries will be done on this table. I am already noticing performance issues and users being temporarily locked out. My question, will we be able to handle this table in the future, or is it better to split this table up into smaller tables for each customer?

• How can I execute a Java program within a php script?

  I am writing a simple web upload script. The goal is to upload a file using php, and then calling a java program to process this file. I have done the work for uploading the file, but I cannot get a java program to be successfully run from within the php script. I have tried exec(), shell_exec(), and system() with no results. For the command, I have used "java Test", "java < directory /Test", "/usr/bin/java < directory /Test", I have even set up the application as a jar file with no results. The actual line of code I have used is: echo shell_exec("java Test"); Usually there is no output. However, if I have just shell_exec("java"), then the last line of the help from java ("show splash screen with specified image") is displayed, which shows that the command has been executed. If I use, for example, shell_exec("whoami") I get "nobody" returned, which is correct. The only thing the java file does is create a file so that I can see that the application has been successfully run (the application runs successfully if I run it on the command line). I have set the permissions for the java file to 777 to rule out any possibility of permission errors. I have been struggling with this for a while trying all sorts of options with no results - the file is never created (the file is created with an absolute path so it's not being created and I just can't find the file). Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

• Is it possible to import specific class from project propreties

  I have 2 projects. First project need to include second. When I copy sources from second project to first I need to modify manually import path to R.java file. The problem is that I need to use SVN external link connection between this 2 projects, that is mean, one project (the bigger one) will take sources from another through svn and should be able to use it without any modifications. If I would be able to specify R.java file path anywhere in project properties it will resolve my problem by changing manually that path. Need to specify that package name of these 2 projects are different. Another solution to resolve this problem also would be accepted. Thank you.

The deck model has a list of card model, According to MVC, if I want to send a card to a deck, I can add the card model to the deck model, and the card view will be added to the deck view by a event handler. So I have a addCard(CardModel m) in the DeckModel class, but if I want to send a event to add the card view of that model to the deck view, I only know let the model has a reference to view. So the question is: If the card model and deck model have to have a reference to their view classes to do it? If not, how to do it better? • Java socket bug on linux (0xFF sent, -3 received)

  While working on a WebSocket server in Java I came across this strange bug. I've reduced it down to two small java files, one is the server, the other is the client. The client simply sends 0x00, the string Hello and then 0xFF (per the WebSocket specification). On my windows machine, the server prints the following: Listening byte: 0 72 101 108 108 111 recieved: 'Hello' While on my unix box the same code prints the following: Listening byte: 0 72 101 108 108 111 -3 Instead of receiving 0xFF it gets -3, never breaks out of the loop and never prints what it has received.   Hi All. I am new to sqlite and SQL in general. I am keen to switch from flat-files to sqlite for holding some measurement information. I need a tip on how to better layout the database, since I have zero experience with this. I have a ~10000 unique statistic counters that are collected before and after each test iteration. Max number of iterations are 10, though it could be less. I was thinking the following: CREATE TABLE stat_names(stat_id, stat_name); CREATE TABLE stats_per_iteration(stat_id, before_iter_1, after_iter_1, before_iter_2, after_iter_2, ...); stat_names table would hold mapping of a full counter to a uniq stat_id. stats_per_iteration table would hold mesurement data 1 + 10 * 2 columns. stat_names.stat_id = stats_per_iteration.stat_id OR maybe I should have a separate table for each iteration? Which would results in 1 + 10 tables in database. Thanks!

  Hello, I'm developing a database to store statistics for a sports league. I'd like to show several tables: - league table that indicates the position of the team in the current and previous fixture - table that shows the position of a team in every fixture in the championship I have a matches table: Matches (IdMatch, IdTeam1, IdTeam2, GoalsTeam1, GoalsTeam2) Whith this table I can calculate the total points of every team based on the matches the team played. But every time I want to show the league table I have to calculate the points. Also I have a problem to calculate in which position classified a team in the last 10 fixtures cause I have to make 10 queries. To store the league table for every fixture in a database table is another approach, but every time I change a match already played I have to recalculate every fixture from there... Is there a better approach for this problem? Thanks

• How does a java compiler resolve a non-imported name

  Consider I use a type X in my java compilation unit from package foo.bar and X is not defined in the compilation unit itself nor is it directly imported. How does a java compiler resolve X now efficiently? There are a few possibilities where X could reside: X might be imported via a star import a.b.* X might reside in the same package as the compilation unit X might be a language type, i.e. reside in java.lang The problem I see is especially (2.). Since X might be a package-private type, it is not even required that X resides in a compilation unit that is named X.java. Thus, the compiler must look into all entries of the class path and search for any classes in a package foo.bar, it then must read every class that is in package foo.bar to check whether X is included. That sounds very expensive. Especially when I compile only a single file, the compiler has to read dozens of class files only to find a type X. If I use a lot of star imports, this procedure has to be repeated for a lot of types (although class files won't be read twice, of course). So is it advisable to import also types from the same package to speed up the compilation process? Or is there a faster method for resolving an unimported type X which I was not able to find?

  Sorry this got long and all prose-y. I'm creating my first truly gamified web app and could use some help thinking about how to structure the data. The Set-up Users need to accomplish tasks in each of several categories before they can move up a level. I've got my Users, Tasks, and Categories tables, and a UserTasks table which joins the three. ("User 3 has added Task 42 in Category 8. Now they've completed it.") That's all fine and working wonderfully. The Challenge I'm not sure of the best way to track the progress in the individual categories toward each level. The "business" rules are: You have to achieve a certain number of points in each category to move up. If you get the number of points needed in Cat 8, but still have other work to do to complete the level, any new Cat 8 points count toward your overall score, but don't "roll over" into the next level. The number of Categories is small (five currently) and unlikely to change often, but by no means absolutely fixed. The number of points needed to level-up will vary per level, probably by a formula, or perhaps a lookup table. So the challenge is to track each user's progress toward the next level in each category. I've thought of a few potential approaches: Possible Solutions Add a column to the users table for each category and reset them all to zero each time a user levels-up. Have a separate UserProgress table with a row for each category for each user and the number of points they have. (Basically a Many-to-Many version of #1.) Add a userLevel column to the UserTasks table and use that to derive their progress with some kind of SUM statement. Their current level will be a simple int in the User table. Pros & Cons (1) seems like by far the most straightforward, but it's also the least flexible. Perhaps I could use a naming convention based on the category ids to help overcome some of that. (With code like "select cats; for each cat, get the value from Users.progress_{cat.id}.") It's also the one where I lose the most data -- I won't know which points counted toward leveling up. I don't have a need in mind for that, so maybe I don't care about that. (2) seems complicated: every time I add or subtract a user or a category, I have to maintain the other table. I foresee synchronization challenges. (3) Is somewhere in between -- cleaner than #2, but less intuitive than #1. In order to find out where a user is, I'd have mildly complex SQL like: SELECT categoryId, SUM(points) from UserTasks WHERE userId={user.id} & countsTowardLevel={user.level} groupBy categoryId Hmm... that doesn't seem so bad. I think I'm talking myself into #3 here, but would love any input, advice or other ideas.

• Help Desk Database Design

  The company I work at has very specific and unique needs for a help desk system, so none of the open source systems will work for us. That being the case, I created a custom system using PHP and MySQL. It's far from perfect, but it's infinitely better than the last system they were using; trust me! It meets most of our needs quite nicely, but I have a question about the way I have the database set up. Here are the main tables: ClosedTickets ClosedTicketSolutions Locations OpenTickets OpenTicketSolutions Statuses Technicians When a user submits a help request, it goes in the "OpenTickets" table. As the technicians work on the problem, they submit entries with a description of what they've done. These entries go in the "OpenTicketSolutions" table. When the problem has been resolved, the last technician to work on the problem closes the ticket and it gets moved to the "ClosedTickets" table. All of the solution entries get moved to the "ClosedTicketSolutions" table as well. The other tables (Locations, Statuses, and Technicians) exist as a means of normalization (each location, status, and technician has an ID which is referenced). The problem I'm having now is this: When I want to view a list of all the open tickets, the SQL statement is somewhat complicated because I have to left join the "Locations", "Statuses", and "Technicians" tables. Fields from various tables need to be searchable as well. I don't think a union would work in my case. So I'm wondering if I should store the open and closed tickets in the same table and just have a field indicating whether or not the ticket is closed. The only problem I can forsee is that we have so many closed tickets already (nearly 30,000) so the whole system might perform slowly. Would it be a bad idea to combine the open and closed tickets?

• PHP site scheduling Java execution?

  I'm trying to get started on combining my (slightly limited) PHP experience with my (better) Java experience, in a project where I need to allow uploads of Java source files to the server, which the server then executes Javac on to compile it. Then, at a set time (e.g. specified on upload) I need to run that once on the server, which will generate some database info for the PHP site to display. To describe my current programming abilities- I have made many desktop Java programs, and am confident in 'pure' Java, but so far have only undertaken a couple of PHP projects (including using the CodeIgniter framework). My motivation for using PHP as the frontend is because I know it is very fast, lightweight and I will be able to display the results I need very easily with it (simple DB readout). Ideally, the technology used should be able to be developed on a localhost (e.g. WAMP, Tomcat etc..) Is there any advice which you could give on what technology I should consider to use to bridge this gap, and what resources could help in using that technology? I have looked at a few, but have struggled to find documentation helping in achieving what I need.

  I have my application online on the Google Apps Engine. When I deploy this application, this error is generated. I am using Netbeans 6.9. My jdk is installed at : "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\". I have installed Google App Engine for Java. This application is getting deployed & run on localhost very well. I am also able to start Google App Engine Server. I have set Environment variables as : 1) classpath : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 2) path : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 3) JAVA_HOME : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 4) include : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\include; 5) lib : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\lib; However, in system32, I am not finding java.exe, javac.exe or javawc.exe. Also, while running this : 1) java.exe 2) javac.exe 3) java -version from Command Line, they give proper output. How do I make my application properly deployed ?

  I have a web app and a console application accessing a db. The db has 2 tables (A, B) one of which (A) is specific to the web app. When writing a data access layer, what is the best way to do it? Technically data access layer should provide access to all the data accessible. In doing so, methods to interact with A are exposed to the console application if we have single access layer. Does creating 2 access layers to 2 table in the same database makes any sense? What is a good way to do it?
