  • Gnome-shell fails to load on 12.10

    I'm usually the one answering questions, but in this I'm throughly stumped! My Setup: Ubuntu 12.10 (Dist upgrade form 12.04) ATI M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650] Upon the first installation of 12.10 I had all kinds of issues getting the Legacy ATI drivers to install (I guess the source for the drivers isn't kosher with kernel 3.5). So, I added the repository ppa:makson96/fglrx - which has a version of the ATI source patched to work with kernel 3.5. After installation of fglrx-legacy from that PPA, gnome-shell and all my graphics work fine... until today. The Problem I unsuspended my computer today and the screen was black (not off, the black from the gnome lock screen). I'd move my mouse/hit a key and the background would flash and then it'd go back to black. Restarted via VT1 Logged into Gnome (gnome-shell) session, but no gnome-shell! Investigation: First, I went to VT1 and tried export DISPLAY=:0;gnome-shell --replace. It appeared to work fine, switch back to X and nothing. Went back to VT1 and saw this error message: JS ERROR: !!!     Hello, I'm getting the error "Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined" when customizing it. I've made several changes to the configuration files and UI, but I keep getting this error. It isn't logging it too in the event log nor the log files, which makes it very annoying to debug. So how do I figure out where the error is coming from? Is it with the URL that's pointing to the ReportServer2005.asmx file, or something else?   • RHEL 5.5 Yum Update Fails Dependency Error

    I have 30 different RHEL 5.5 machines that will not update some 33 packages via Yum. Does anyone know why these packages will not install and how to correct this? Yum clean all does not fix the issue, however skip broken will allow other updates to install but I am really after a way to clear this up for good. They are stock boxes with RHEL subscription and not using any yum repositories other than Red Hat's own official repositories. Packets going from A - B is part of the same conversations as packets going from B - A. I need to perform a query to show the on going conversations. Basically what I need is something that looks like this: Returned Query: SrcAddress SrcPort DestAddress DestPort TotalBytes BytesA->B BytesB->A 10.0.25.1 255 10.0.25.50 500 208 112 96 75.48.0.25 387 74.26.9.40 198 136 72 64 As you can see I need the query (or series of queries) to recognize that A-B is the same as B-A and break up the byte counts accordingly. I'm not a SQL guru by any means but any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Epoll in EPOLLET mode returning 2 EPOLLIN before reading from the socket

    The epoll manpage says that a fd registered with EPOLLET(edge triggered) shouldn't notify twice EPOLLIN if no read has been done. So after an EPOLLIN you need to empty the buffer before epoll_wait being able to return a new EPOLLIN on new data. However I'm experiencing problems with this approach as I'm seeing duplicated EPOLLIN events for untouched fds.   • Kernel upgrade CentOS 5.3 mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

    We have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server that by default runs kernel version 2.6.18-164.11.1 and we are attempting to upgrade the box to 2.6.31.12 The drive is LVM +ext3, and the problem I'm having is when I upgrade the kernel and attempt to boot from it, no matter what version of the kernel I use, I get /dev/root not found towards the end of the boot process, and the kernel panics, and than reboots. I'm installing the kernel exactly as it says in this doc. I've tried it "The centOS way " using make rpm and than installing that. I've updated my mkinitrd. The most interesting part of this problem is that it has been so frustrating that I decided to try and clean install centos on an identical machine without LVM, and the result is EXACTLY the same. After upgrading the kernel, I get /dev/root not found. Does anyone know how to fix this, or what information would be relevant to remedy it? I'm open to try anything at this point. One more interesting thing about this problem is that in the new version of the kernel, during boot it complains that dm-mapper is started twice, than panics right after that. I've tried this with other kernel versions, and the result is the same. What am I missing here? If you need any more files, please just ask.   • Windows - VBScript - Determine IP address of computer on network

    I have written some VBScripts to automate tasks that I perform on computers over the network. These work great for most tasks however within our network we have problems with the IP address in DNS being correct all the time. This mainly occurs with laptops where we have different IP ranges for machines on the wireless and wired network. For example a machine may boot up wired in the morning and get an IP address: 10.10.10.1 When it switches to wireless it will obtain an address in a different subnet: 10.11.10.1 When you try to connect to that machine it still returns the old IP address (10.10.10.1) even though the computer now has a new one. I have found that I can still connect to that computer's C$ share via \computer name\c$ even though the machine does not ping. Obviously there is some other kind of address resolution going on, my question is how do I harness this to allow my VBScripts connect to WMI? Thanks!

About the system:- There are tutors who create classes A tags based search approach is being followed Tag relations are created/edited when new tutors registers/edits profile data and when tutors create classes (this makes tutors and classes searcheable).For simplicity, let us consider only tutor name and class name are the fields which are matched against search keywords. In this example, I am considering - tutor "Sandeepan Nath" has created a class called "first class" tutor "Bob Cratchit" has created a class called "new class" Desired search results- AND logic to be appied on the search keywords and match against class and tutor data(class name + tutor name), in other words, All those classes be shown such that all the search terms are present in the class name or its tutor name. Example to be clear - Searching "first class" returns class with id_wc = 1. Working Searching "Sandeepan class" should also return class with id_wc = 1. Not working in System 2. Problem with profile editing and searching To tell in one sentence, I am facing a conflict between the ease of profile edition (edition of tag relations when tutor profiles are edited) and the ease of search logic. In the beginning, we had one table structure and search was easy but tag edition logic was very clumsy and unmaintainable(Check System 1 in the section below) . So we created separate tag relations tables to make profile edition simpler but search has become difficult. Please dump the tables so that you can run the search query I have given below and see the results. System 1 (previous system - search easy - profile edition difficult):- Only one table called All_Tag_Relations table had the all the tag relations. That solves my problem in a nice way. As you can figure out, the reason why it does not work in system 2 is that in system 1, for every class, one additional tag relation linking class and tutor name is present. e.g. for class first class, (records with id_tag_rel 3 and 4) which returns the class on searching with tutor name. So, you see the trade-off between the search and profile edition difficulty with the two systems. How do I overcome both. I have to reach a conclusion soon. So far my reasoning is it is definitely not good from a code maintainability point of view to follow the single tag rel table structure of system one, because in a real system while editing a field like "tutor qualifications", there can be as many records in tag rels table as there are words in qualification of a tutor (one word in a field = one tag relation). Now suppose a tutor has 100 classes. When he edits his qualification, all the tag rel rows corresponding to him are deleted and then as many copies are to be created (as per the new qualification data) as there are classes. This becomes particularly difficult if later more searcheable fields are added. The code cannot be robust. Is the best solution to follow system 2 (edition has to be in one table - no extra work for each and every class) and somehow re-create the all_tag_relations table like system 1 (from the tables tutor_tag_relations and webclasses_tag_relations), creating the extra tutor tag rels for each and every class by a tutor (which is currently missing in system 2's temporary all_tag_relations table). That would be a time consuming logic script. I doubt that table can be recreated without resorting to PHP sript (mysql alone cannot do that). But the problem is that running all this at search time will make search definitely slow. So, how do such systems work? How are such situations handled? I thought about we can run a cron which initiates that PHP script, say every 1 minute and replaces the existing all_tag_relations table as per new tag rels from tutor_tag_relations and webclasses_tag_relations (replaces means creates a new table, deletes the original and renames the new one as all_tag_relations, otherwise search won't work during that period- or is there any better way to that?). Anyway, the result would be that any changes by tutors will reflect in search in the next 1 minute and not immediately. An alternateve would be to initate that PHP script every time a tutor edits his profile. But here again, since many users may edit their profiles concurrently, will the creation of so many tables be a burden and can mysql make the server slow? Any help would be appreciated and working solution will be accepted as answer. Thanks, Sandeepan

    I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am.     I have a small network and I need help with routing .. . My VLANs VLAN 1010 SALES VLAN 1020 HR I have assigned the above vlans to a tagged port and I have added a default route to send the traffic of to my firewall. ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.10 I have added a new vlan VLAN 1030 Services and I would like its traffic to go to a different interface on the firewall, 10.10.10.20 how can I go about doing that? can someone give me an example? your help is highly appreciated.
