• C# vs Java Concurrency

- by Lirik
What are some notable differences between C# and Java concurrency? Are there any fundamental differences that we should know about? What should developers consider when trying to pick one or the other? I based my question on this one, but I'm more interested in the fundamental differences... not which one is better.

• ASP.NET client to stateful java webservice client (metro)

- by hubertg
Hi I have a webservice with the following annotations: @WebService @HttpSessionScope @Stateful @Addressing Now I created a ASP.NET (c#) client for this webservice, but when I call a method the following error is returned: This is a stateful web service and {http://jax-ws.dev.java.net/xml/ns/}objectId header is required. How can I tell ASP.net to switch to stateful mode? Is this possible at all? Thanks any advice/examples.

• Getting information of a class structure at runtime using Java reflection

- by Eliza Sahoo
A simple way to get the class structure information of the Class we are using in our application. Step1: Create the Class object of the class we want to explore at run time or the class which is getting added at runtime. Step2: As we are looking for the structure of the class, get all Constructors, Fields and methods by invoking respective functions of the Class. Step3: print them in java console or use them as required. Eliza

• binary search tree recursive subtree in java

- by Art Peterson
Can anyone point me to a code example (java preferably) or psuedocode that uses recursion to return a subtree that contains all nodes with keys between fromKey and toKey. So if I was to call Tree.subtree(5,10) it should return all nodes in the BST that have keys between 5 and 10 inclusive - but I can't use loops or helper methods...only recursive calls to the subtree method, which takes fromKey and toKey as parameters. Thanks!

• Java RMI method synchronization

- by James Moore
Hello, I have a class that is stored on the 'server' and multiple clients can call this method. This method returns a class. Now when clients call accessor methods within this class for example a set accessor method. I want the object on the server to be updated and synchronized across all the other clients. How do I use: public synchronized setStatus(String s) { this.status = s; } within java to achieve this. Thanks

• Get current active window's title in Java

- by Steven
I am trying to write a Java program that logs what application I'm using every 5 seconds (this is a time tracker app). I need some way to find out what the current active window is. I found KeyboardFocusManager.getGlobalActiveWindow() but I can't get it to work right. A cross platform solution is preferable, but if one doesn't exist, then I'm developing for linux with X.Org. Thanks.

• Does Java need closures?

- by Bill the Lizard
I've been reading a lot lately about the next release of Java possibly supporting closures. I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp on what closures are, but I can't think of a solid example of how they would make an Object-Oriented language "better". Can anyone give me a specific use-case where a closure would be needed (or even preferred)?

• I dont understand Access modifiers in OOP (JAVA)

- by Imran
I know this is a silly question but i don't understand Access Modifiers in OOP. Why do we make for example in JAVA instance variables private and then use public getter and setter methods to access them? I mean whats the reasoning/logic behind this? You still get to the instance variable but why use setter and getter methods when you can just make your variables public? please excuse my ignorance as i'm simply trying to understand why we do this? Thank you in advance;-)

• How can I split a string in Java?

- by Sergio Tapia
Imagine I have this string: string thing = "sergio|tapia|gutierrez|21|Boston"; In C# I could go: string[] Words = thing.Split('|'); Is there something similar in Java? I could use Substring and indexOf methods but it is horribly convoluted. I don't want that.

• Insert a doctype into an XML document (Java/ SAX)

- by Thom Nichols
Imagine you have an XML document and imagine you have the DTD but the document itself doesn't actually specify a DOCTYPE ... How would you insert the DOCTYPE declaration, preferably by specifying it on the parser (similar to how you can set the schema for a document that will be parsed) or by inserting the necessary SAX events via an XMLFilter or the like? I've found many references to EntityResolver, but that is what's invoked once a DOCTYPE is found during parsing and it's used to point to a local DTD file. EntityResolver2 appears to have what I'm looking for but I haven't found any examples of usage. This is the closest I've come thus far: (code is Groovy, but close enough that you should be able to understand it...) import org.xml.sax.* import org.xml.sax.ext.* import org.xml.sax.helpers.* class XmlFilter extends XMLFilterImpl { public XmlFilter( XMLReader reader ) { super(reader) } @Override public void startDocument() { super.startDocument() super.resolveEntity( null, 'file:///./entity.dtd') println "filter startDocument" } } class MyHandler extends DefaultHandler2 { public InputSource resolveEntity(String name, String publicId, String baseURI, String systemId) { println "entity: $name, $publicId, $baseURI, $systemId" return new InputSource(new StringReader('<!ENTITY asdf "¡">')) } } def handler = new MyHandler() def parser = XMLReaderFactory.createXMLReader() parser.setFeature 'http://xml.org/sax/features/use-entity-resolver2', true def filter = new XmlFilter( parser ) filter.setContentHandler( handler ) filter.setEntityResolver( handler ) filter.parse( new InputSource(new StringReader('''<?xml version="1.0" ?> <test>one &asdf; two! ¡£¢</test>''')) ); I see resolveEntity called but still hit org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The entity "asdf" was referenced, but not declared. at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.parsers.AbstractSAXParser.parse(AbstractSAXParser.java:1231) at org.xml.sax.helpers.XMLFilterImpl.parse(XMLFilterImpl.java:333) I guess this is because there's no way to add SAX events that the parser knows about, I can only add events via a filter that's upstream from the parser which are passed along to the ContentHandler. So the document has to be valid going into the XMLReader. Any way around this? I know I can modify the raw stream to add a doctype or possibly do a transform to set a DTD... Any other options?

AdWords uses Axis as underlying WS library, which do not work on GAE and unfortunately I cannot find solution to make it working. I tried already this: http://dev.bizo.com/2009/04/calling-soap-web-services-on-google-app.html Does any of you know if there is a way to use AdWords API on GAE with Java? Thanks in advance for any help Konrad

• Java - Lock Aspect Ratio of JFrame

- by nasufara
Is it possible to lock the aspect ratio of a JFrame in Java Swing? For example, if my window is 200px by 200px, and the user wants to resize it, I want the ratio between the width and the height at 1:1, so that if the new width is 400px, the new height is forced to 400px. I'm aware of ComponentListener and componentResized, but I'm having difficulty not getting it to go into an infinite loop of resizing, because I'm resizing the window in a resize listener. Thanks!
