  Possible Duplicate: Power Supply Capacity Formula How can I check if my system needs more PSU power? I'm not sure if it's OK or not to ask a hardware question here. If not please let me know a good place but I've always got good info here so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm custom building a new workstation for coding (Linux/Eclipse). How do I determine how much power the power supply needs? I'm building a mini ITX system on a budget and so I need to get as small as possible that is sufficient. I'll have a mini itx mobo with on board wifi and bluetooth, 8 GB RAM, an Intel i3 3.1 Ghz processor, 64 GB SSD and a slim optical drive. In the future I might add a descrete GPU, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD. What is the minimum power I need and how do I calculate that?

• No video signal at boot with custom built computer

  After booting my custom built computer, neither the VGA nor the HDMI methods from the video card seem to emit any signal to the display. I have tested both a regular VGA screen and a modern HDMI screen. Both did not receive signal. Below are the specifications from my computer build: Intel Core i5 3350P ASRock B75 Pro 3-M Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST1000 DM003 1000GB Corsair Vengeance LP CML 8GX 3M2 A1600 CGB Blue (2 cards) Cooler Master B Series B600 Club 3D Radeon HD7870 XT Jokercard Samsung SH-224 BB Black Sharkoon T28 Case The motherboard does not emit any beeps on startup. The CD tray opens properly and all fans spin. All cables are properly connected. All components are new and no damage was found on any of the components. The fans on the GPU spin aswell. The VGA test we did was by using the onboard graphics from the Intel i5, but this gave no result. The HDMI test was from the GPU which did not emit any signal either. We have not been able to test out the DVI, could this be important to test, even though all the other methods did not work? Thank you for your time and hopefully reply.

• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • Laptop Most Likely to Have Good Driver Support

  Through numerous bad experiences, I have learned that the most likely cause of laptop "failure" is the lack of updated drivers for new operating systems. As an example, I have a perfectly good Thinkpad T42 at home which runs Windows 7 just fine for my purposes except that no compatible ATI video drivers are available, and the generic drivers have flicker effects. I recently saw an ASUS laptop which looked quite nice except that I would be beholden to them to release ATI video driver updates customized for it. And, I can't trust them to do that for more than six months. What laptops (manufacturer/line) should I consider so that I could expect at least a couple years of frequent updates? I plan on running Windows 7 and installing whatever successor comes out. I like Intel components (especially WiFi) because I can install their drivers directly from them, and they have a long history of providing updates for years after shipping a particular component. More generally, components from companies which are likely to update drivers frequently are good as long as I can install the component manufacturer-provided drivers without laptop-specific customization (like the ATI drivers). Also, if a component can be replaced easily, I am less concerned. For example, Dell stopped pumping out updated drivers for one of its mini-PCI WiFi cards. The solution was to buy an Intel replacement on eBay for $12! That's fine. I can deal with that. So, what laptops should I consider so that I'm not likely to be stuck between a rock and a hard place?

  hi im not sure if this is the right place to ask but, i just build a new desktop for gaming. i3 530 2.93 GHz P7H55-M/USB3 Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz iGame Gtx 460 Win 7 32bit Huntkey X7 900W Everytime i start the computer it would run normally until the windows loading and will just stuck and hit the blue screen.i tried everypossible way to repair,restore the windows but nutin seems to be working. I'm not sure if its compatibility problem or Bios or even Ram,since the beep is a normal beep and will only blue screen when loading the windows. if anyone can help me id appriciate it. thx

• Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V very slow

  I have been running several Hyper-V VMs on Windows Server 2008 R2 for the past couple of years and enjoying perfectly adequate performance for my testing/development/r&d environments. I'm a software developer so my hardware knowledge is basic however I built the rig using: •Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard •Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) •24GB triple channel RAM The host OS is running on an OCZ SSD and all the VMs are running on a 2TB Marvell SATA3 RAID 0 array consisting of 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 7,200rpm drives. I have tested the speed of the 2TB drive and appear to be getting less than 3Mbs but it can adequately run a 4 VM farm including a DC, (SQL) database and IIS application servers. I recently upgraded the SSD on which the host runs to a 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 and took the opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 and installed the Hyper-V role. I tried importing one of my existing Windows Server 2008 R2 VMs (and converted it to .vhdx) plus I have tried creating a brand new Windows Server 2008 R2 VM but both are running extremely slowly and I can see nothing obvious using the host and guest Task Manager/Resource Monitor tools. In both cases the VM has 8GB RAM (fixed), 4 CPUs, fixed size HD (not expanding) and is using an external virtual network running on a separate NIC to the host. I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest available version and checked the virtualization settings. I have run out of "obvious" (to a developer) things to check/configure and my next option will be to re-install the host OS but before I do I would very much appreciate any advice from any experts out there. • Hearing repeated sound in Linux mint Chrome Browser

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some repetition in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . • Which CPU for XEN - LAMP testbed - Budget

  Dear serverfault knowledgeables, im in a decision dilemma right now, which I can't resolve due to lack of hands on experience. I need to build a testbed for basically virtualizing a LAMP application (os'ses not yet decided) including server side calculations. I'll opt for XEN since it seems better supported by cloud hosters at the moment. The hardware is for a proof of concept for a startup doing saas and might be used for closed live alpha/beta later on. After testing, the testbed might be a) deployed as a colocated white box server b) used as workstation Single socket is enough. We want to have ECC memory for reliability, this excludes most of the consumer line at intel. If intel CPU, then threaded cpu (HT) is preferred have at least 16 gig ram If justified by price and reliability is not too bad, a high quality desktop MB instead of a server MB would be worth a try It came down to the opteron 6128 vs. the xeon 5620 for me after a lot of research, but I don't necessarily have to be right. Which CPU is preferrable, concerning TCO (MB price, power requirements 24/7...) , Opteron 6128 or Xeon 5620? Which one offers better performance in real world applications? (Do You have any other suggestions I probably overlooked?) Thank You for Your consideration

  According to ISC's dhcpd manpage: The filename statement filename "filename"; The filename statement can be used to specify the name of the initial boot file which is to be loaded by a client. The filename should be a filename recognizable to whatever file transfer protocol the client can be expected to use to load the file. My questions are: What file transfer protocols, besides tftp, are available to load the file (e.g. What protocols "can be expected to" load the file)? How can I tell? Can I see a list of these protocols? Does my choice of DHCP server influence which file transfer protocols are in use? Pretend I want to use dnsmasq instead of ISC's dhcpd Are these features dependent on the PXE which is in use (e.g. My Intel NICs use an Intel ROM)? I know that some PXE-variants, such as iPXE/gPXE/Etherboot, can also load files over HTTP. However, the PXE rom needs to be replaced with the iPXE image, either by chainloading or by burning the PXE rom onto the NIC. For example, the iPXE Howto "Using ISC dhcpd" says: ISC dhcpd is configured using the file /etc/dhcpd.conf. You can instruct iPXE to boot using the filename directive: filename "pxelinux.0"; or filename "http://boot.ipxe.org/demo/boot.php";

  I just installed red hat enterprise 5 in my laptop and on desktop both. In desktop it is working fine but in laptop it is not showing the eth device. (I tried ifconfig only lo is there). I tried ifup eth0 still nothing happened. The network service in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and in /etc/sysconfig/network are enable. I had ubuntu in my laptop before and I faced same problem with that too. Is there any problem with my laptop? I have my system on dual boot and in win7 networking is running fine. • Advice on Computer Specs for overall development/general use machine

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family. • SQL Server Installation: Is it 32 or 64 bit?

  Hi, Recently I was performing an OS upgrade on one of our DB servers, moving from Server 2003 to Server 2008. The DBMS is SQL Server 2005. While reinstalling SQL on the new Windows installation, I went to another of our DB servers to verify a couple of settings. Now, I always thought this second server was Server 2003 x64 + SQL 2005 x64 (from what I'd been told), but I now have my doubts about this. I now suspect that it is in fact only 32 bit SQL, however I'd like to verify this. Here's some details: The OS is definitely 64 bit. xp_msver shows Platform as NT INTEL X86 SELECT @@VERSION shows Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.4035.00 (Intel X86)... However sqlservr.exe is not shown with '* 32' in taskmgr, does anyone know why this is the case, if it is in fact 32 bit as claimed? Despite this, it does seem to be running out of the x86 program files folder. If I do the same checks on a confirmed 64 bit installation, it does give back the expected 64 bit readings, which can only prove that this server in question is only running in 32 bit. Now, that being the case, the question arises about how much memory this '32 bit' install can use. Task manager reports about 3.5GB memory usage for sqlservr.exe (The server has 16GB physical). I suspect that AWE has not been configured at all, and therefore the server will be significantly under-utilised (remembering that the OS is 64 bit) if SQL is simply using a 32bit address space. Is this assumption correct? I feel the server should have SQL reinstalled as 64 bit in order to fully utilise the hardware platform, however it is currently heavily in production; this will be no easy task. I suspect we may just have to configure AWE correctly and let it be for the time being (Unless this is a bad idea?). I apologise that this question is a little vague/lost; I'm no SQL expert, just trying to get a handle on what's going on here.

  I am about to purchase a laptop and have zeroed on the following two of them. Toshiba L500-ST2544 Toshiba L505-ES5034 The Common Specification for both of them are as follows - RAM - 4GB DDR3 Memory HDD - 320 GB Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor WebCam and Mic - Available HDMI Port - Available Numeric Key Pad - Available Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium Now, the only difference between ST2544 and ES5034 is that, the ST2544 has a maximum of 2 slots with 2 GB in each. So, you can have a max of 4 GB RAM in that. The ES5034 can support 8 GB RAM, so, in a couple of years, if I want to add another 4 GB RAM I will be able to do it. The price for ST2544 is USD 629.00 whereas, the price for a ES5034 is USD685. A difference is USD 55.00 (not a major amount, but still something extra). Is it worthwhile going for the ES5034? Which Windows Operating System supports 8 GB of RAM?

• Graphics Artifacts/ Texture Flickering

  Hey I been having some problems with artifacts in games. Sometimes textures flicker. Artifacts of various shapes and sizes show up usually after a couple games of dota 2. I built my computer almost exactly one month ago and it has been doing this pretty much from the start except before the artifacts I believe just flashed on screen fast enough to where I couldn't tell what it was but I still noticed. In dota I've seen green triangular artifacts among other things. I've tried running Furmark for a while but even though it pushes the gpu much harder than dota 2, there are still no artifacts. It maxes in furmark at about 60C and running every game I've tried on it at 40C. CPU and system temp don't usually get higher than 40C either. These are my system specs: Gigabyte Z68 Intel Motherboard 16 GB Gskill Ripjaws SDRAM DDR3 Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz edition Intel Core i5-2500k (with built in gpu) Corsair 750 Watt PSU windows 7-64 bit I have the latest drivers for everything. What should I do about this? Try to RMA my graphics card? Are there other things that could be causing this?

• Can I format a usb stick on windows xp, in HFS+ format, and make the usb stick mac os x bootable?

  My Intel Mac OS X computer is corrupt and I feel, at this point, I need to perform a fresh install of the OS. It consistently and automatically logs out, right after I log in. I tried logging in as the root. I tried safe boot and it wouldn't load. Anyway, the point is I want put the Mac OS X installer on a USB thumb drive and have it boot up on the Intel Mac OS X computer. Unfortunately, the computer is inaccessible, as I mentioned above. So, I have a Windows XP machine that I'm using and attempting to create a bootable USB thumb drive that's compatible with Mac OS X. I have tried transmac, macdrive, and paradox for windows -- all of which proved unable to format the usb stick in HFS+. How do I know this? Well, even though the Transmac reports that's been formatted to HFS+, Computer Management in Windows says otherwise: I even put the installer on the usb drive, after transmac reportedly formatted it properly, and the mac os x computer didn't even recognize that a USB thumb drive was inserted, via pressing the option key at boot-up time. I'm not sure what the problem is and how to actually format the drive. Can anybody offer any help? I would appreciate it. Thank you.

• Processes spawned by taskset not respecting environment variables

  I've run into an issue where an intel compiler generated program that I'm running with taskset has been putting its temporary files into the working directory instead of /tmp (defined by environment variable TMPDIR). If run by itself, it works correctly. If run with taskset (e.g. taskset -c 0 <program> Then it seems to completely ignore the TMPDIR environment variable. I then verified this by writing a quick bash script as follows: contents of test.sh: #!/bin/bash echo $TMPDIR When run by itself: $ export TMPDIR=/tmp $ test.sh /tmp When run through taskset: $ export TMPDIR=/tmp $ taskset -c 1 test.sh "" Another test. If I export the TMPDIR variable inside of my script and then use taskset to spawn a new process, it doesn't know about that variable: #!/bin/bash export TMPDIR=/tmp taskset -c 1 sh -c export When run, the list of exported variables does not include TMPDIR. It works correctly with any other exported environment variable. If i diff the output of: export and taskset -c 1 bash -c export Then I see that there are 4 changes. The taskset spawned export doesn't have LD_LIBRARY_PATH, NLSPATH (intel compiler variable), SHLVL is 3 instead of 1, and TMPDIR is missing. Can anyone tell me why?

• Building My First Computer And Suprise It Isn't Working

  I've had many years of experience working on and around computers, but this was my first foray into building one completely from scratch. So far that foray has been a disaster. My rig is completely assembled, and on its maiden power-up plus many power cycles I noticed three things: There were a few beeps from the BIOS POST upon powering up the first time, but I wasn't paying attention completely to the sequence. However, every time after that there are 0 POST beeps, even after taking off all hardware except the CPU and MB. There was no video being sent to the monitor. I run a HDMI cable from my video card to the monitor. The video card was LOUD. My card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 which is known for not only being a powerhouse, but being pretty quiet. A few times during my power cycles it ran a lot quieter, but most of the time it was just super loud. Can anyone provide help for any of these issues? • xen + debian network after upgrade squeeze to wheeze

  I've got a Debian + Xen server. After a system upgrade to the stable version the network doesn't come up after boot. Every time after reboot I need to bring it up manually. The network configuration was not changed during upgrade. Here is /etc/network/interfaces: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 11.22.33.44 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 11.22.33.1 nameserver 8.8.8.8 After boot ip r shows no route and eth0 has no ip address. Manually ip and route setup goes fine and network starts working. • Gigabyte H55N-USB3: No video on HDMI

  I built a new PC with a Gigabyte H55N-USB3 / Intel Core i5 650. With a monitor plugged in the DVI port, everything works fine. I installed Windows 7 32-bit and enabled remote desktop connection. After that, I unplugged the monitor, plugged it into network and installed everything else (drivers, programs, etc) via RDP. However, when I try to use the HDMI port on my TV nothing appears. Neither during the boot, neither after Windows starts. The TV says there's "no signal" (if I remove the cable the message changes to "check cable"). The cable is new, and it is working fine with my home theater on same TV (by the way, it is the cable which came bundled with the home theater). Video driver is the latest from Intel site. Anyway, this shouldn't be the problem since there is no image during the boot. Any ideas or tips would be welcome. I'm googling around but found nothing useful, yet.

• Facing gestures in Linux mint Chrome Browser

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some gestures in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  Suppose I want to build a server for the university's academic interests. The server is dedicated only to a site, where users (students and lecturers) just view and fill the academic data. But at a time (e.g. once a semester), about 12,000 students will access the site simultaneously. Due to limitation of resources, I have to build the server using free software (except for the operating system Windows 7, the university has been prepared). The hardware is also limited to the usual 4-core computers (eg, Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7-3770) with approximately 16GB of memory (DDR3 1600 MHz), equipped with an RJ-45 port (Intel 82 579 Gigabit Ethernet). With all these limitations, I have to choose the software (web server, database, etc) are appropriate for this purpose is achieved. I decided to create a site in PHP. Please help me by answering the following questions based on your expertise. (my prime candidate software to consider after googling) Web server which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for PHP? And why? (nginx) PHP accelerator which is faster & stable & compatible with the selected web server? And why? (APC with Zend Optimizer+) Database which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for selected web server and selected PHP accelerator? (MySQL) Are there any errors that have been or will be happening from my condition is? If there is, please enlighten me? Is there anything else I need to know in order to achieve this goal? If there is, please enlighten me? I understand that the performance also depends on the implementation of source-code program, so I assume it will create a site with the best efficiency (e.g. using AJAX).
