• Cisco 1841 Box and Watchguard XTM21-W

  I have never set one of these up before and need a little assistance. Right now we have a T1 line coming in from Sprint to a Cisco 1841 and then on to our router. However, when I plug the Cisco 1841 into Port 0 and the router into Port 3 it does not work. In Port 1 I have my management computer plugged in. We have one subnet and this must be easy but I cannot figure out how to make this work. When the firewall is plugged in then I get no internet or network access.

• Routing table change to access Internet over mifi

  I have two networks at home. One uses a Verizon mifi wireless on 192.168.1.1. The other uses a dlink router on 192.168.0.1. I have one laptop with two nics, one wireless and one not. The wireless nic connects to the mifi. The Ethernet nic connects to the dlink router. It's ip is 192.168.0.2. I also have a laptop with only one nic connected to the dlink on 192.168.0.3. I want to connect laptop 2 to the Internet. Can I do that by adding an entry to the routing table so that destination 0.0.0.0 routes to 192.168.0.2? If I do that, will laptop 1 "know" that it should route traffic from 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.1.1? Thanks for any assistance.

• Assisting a user using VNC

  I'm trying to help a friend with their computer remotely. He has a version of VNC, I'm not sure which one, so I downloaded and installed the VNC Viewer and Listening Viewer. I ask my friend for his IP address and port number, and he tells me that every time he's used it, the person giving him assistance (remotely controlling his computer) gave him some kind of number. I should note that my friend is not tech savy, and it may have been an IP address, but I'm not sure. What kind of number would the user be looking for? Does this indicate his version of VNC, Does that even matter? I am completly forign to VNC and don't know where to begin looking for an answer myself, and (for whatever reason) I can't ask my friend to figure out what version of VNC he is using.

• What do I need to connect a hard disk to my laptop via non powered eSata?

  Hi there. I'm looking at getting a hard disk for my laptop (OCZ Vertex 2 SSD) which I would like to connect via eSata. My laptop has an eSata port, but it's not powered (Thinkpad T410). I presume this means I need more than just an eSata to eSata cable as it needs power, so does this mean I need a caddy for the hard disk as well which will provide power to the drive, or do I need one of them eSata cables that has a USB attachment too? I don't think the drive will come with a power supply. I realise this seems simple but I can't find an obvious answer online. Thanks for any assistance! Ludo.

• machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

  i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

• CentOS VM, NTP synchronization problems

  We have three CentOS 5.9 VMs on an ESX3.5 host. Because of the nature of the services we provide it is required that the NTP time is synchronized and the time is correct on all three of them. However one of them constantly drifts back each day for about 66 sec. So far none of us seems to understand as why is this happening. We included the possibility that the VM may be somehow pulling the time from the host, however all of the three VMs have identical configuration settings and they did not have VMware tools installed. Although I realize that this is probably a question of an internal matter and not to ask for on a forum, I would appreciate if anyone of you knows some CentOS NTP diagnostic routines that will help me to diagnose the problem and find a reliable solution. • How to set up my network/bridging using Apple Airport equipment?

  I'd like to set up my network like this, and I want to make sure it's possible using the hardware I have. I think it should be... I've got my cable modem in one room. I want to plug it into an Apple Airport Express and create my wireless my wireless network here. The airport express will do the NAT and DHCP. By my TV there are a few things to be networked (Xbox and Tivo). I have an airport extreme here. I'd like to have the airport extreme join the wireless network and share the connection to the ethernet ports. Can anyone provide some assistance on the best way to configure to do this? Thanks!

• How can I debug Cisco Firewall ASA "Dispatch Unit" very high CPU utilisation from ASDM?

  I have recently had my first firewall installed so I am very new to this whole situation. I am finding that Dispatch unit is becoming overloaded and it would appear to be the reason I get serious bouts of lag on my server. The firewall has had little configuration apart from me blocking all the ports in "Access Rules" and allowing only the ones the server needs and from where it needs them. I guess what I am after is assistance with locating the issues causing "Dispatch Unit" to take up all the CPU Regards --Edit-- With ASDM statistics I found that packets inbound (peak of 70-100k/sec from <1k/sec normal), traffic inbound (peak of 40-50kbits/sec from <1kbits/sec normal) and CPU all peak at the same time so I am pretty sure it is an attack of some sort but as a beginner with ASA I am not sure how to resolve

• How can I prevent users from installing software?

  Our organization is a bit different than most. During certain times of the year, we grow to thousands of employees, and during off-times, less than a hundred. Over the course of a few years, many thousands of people have come and gone in our offices, and left their legacy behind in the form of all sorts of unwanted, unapproved, (and sometimes unlicensed) software installs on our desktops. We are currently installing redundant domain controllers and upgrading current servers, all running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, and will eventually be able to run a pure 2008 DC network. With that in mind, what are our options in being able to lock down users, such that they cannot install unauthorized software on systems without the assistance (or authorization) of the IT group? We need to support approximately 400 desktops, so automation is key. I've taken note of the Software Restrictions we can implement via Group Policy, but that implies that we already know what users will be installing and attempting to run... not quite so elegant. Any ideas?

  I run a large mailing list (30,000 users). Every month I get a whole slew of bounces in my mailbox from the "mailing list memberships reminder" that get sent out. I thought that these were supposed to go to the program and automatically unsubscribe people, not go to me. We are running a standard unmodified MacOS Server installation. Here is a typical bounce: From: Mail Delivery System Subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender To: [email protected] This is the mail system at host mail.COMPANY.COM. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.   Hello I cannot copy photos and paste them from a word document into the text of an email on my Sony Laptop having already substantially redcued the size of the photos using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I can readily manage to perform this functjon from my work place PC but am presently working mostly from home. I am trying to email photos and text using a btinternet.com email address but have checked that I cannot perform the task using my alternate googlemail email address either. I can obviously highlight the relevant photographs but whenever I try to copy or cut them into the email text the paste function is disabled. Assistance would be much appreciated. Kind regards Simon

• Squid proxy server not forwarding traffic

  I'm trying to set up a web filtering system (dans guardian) on my home network but am failing at the first hurdle - configuring the Squid Proxy server. No matter what I do I cannot seem to configure it properly and I just receive the 'Requested URL could not be received' error page. If I remove the proxy setting on the browser everything works normally. Ultimately I want to run this on something like a Raspberry Pi but at the moment I'm testing with a virtual machine (although efforts with a netbook were equally unsuccessful). The VM has a clean installation of Linux Mint 15 and I've installed squid via apt-get. I've followed numerous walkthroughs but this on (https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/squid.html) pretty much sums up the process I've been taking. I'm obviously missing something but cannot figure it out - any assistance appreciated.

• Splitting Multiple Files in Windows

  We have a 21TB LUN full of images that are approx 600K in size in multiple sub folders on the disk. We are trying to split the 21TB LUN into 8 smaller LUNs that are about 2.6TB a piece in order to process the images more effectively. My question is how we can determine what 2.6TB is on the drive? What is the best tool to mark this data so we can copy it to the new smaller LUNs with robocopy or emcopy without overfilling the smaller LUNs? Is there a third-party tool that would be better suited for this task? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

• Why can't SVN checkout into a virtualbox shared folder?

  I am trying to checkout into the virtualbox shared folder with svn 1.7 in ubuntu 12.04 running as a guest on a windows 7 host. I had read that this error was a 1.6 problem, and updated - but am still receiving the error: svn: E000071: Can't move '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/.svn/tmp/svn-hsOG5X' to '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/trunk/statement.aspx?d=201108': Protocol error I found this blog post about the same error in a mac environment, but am finding that changing the folder/file permissions does nothing. vim .svn/entires just has the number 12 - does this need to be changed? Thank you for any assistance! (just another reason for why I prefer git...)

• Needing to concatenate between cells that change daily. I want to be able to automate this vs manual

  I use concatenate to pull data together from different cells in my spreadsheet. Since my data changes daily, I want the formula to also change daily without having to manually input the new cell in the concatenate formula. I am looking for a way to do this but not sure how. Can anyone out there help me out please!? I appreciate the assistance in advance! Maybe this will help to explain what I need. I have a row of data from D4:AH4 that I insert daily based on the new day. When I use the concatenate and us the following formula: =CONCATENATE(TEXT('Raw Data'!B4,"m/d")," ",TEXT('Raw Data'!C4,"")," ",TEXT('Raw Data'!E4,"0.0%"))... E4 being the cell that changes daily where next day would be F4, G4, etc... All other parts of the formula will stay the same. I hope this helps! Thanks! :)

• Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

  I have a new Windows Phone 7 phone, and I'm trying to investigate how to connect the Office application to our SharePoint site(s). In the Office application, on Phone 7, I flip to the SharePoint page. I go to open URL, and enter the url for one of my sites, that uses default authentication (Windows Auth). I get a message: Can't open SharePoint doesn't support this authentication scheme. For assistance, contact the person who manages thus SharePoint site (That would be me). You can try opening the content in your web browser instead. When opening in my browser, I can access the content without any problem. (Windows Auth passes) Anyone have any source material on what I should do to my SharePoint site to "support this authentication scheme?" Note: I am the administrator of our SharePoint server farm(s).

• Direct Access on Server 2012

  Scenario: Windows Server 2012 with the Remote Access role installed. IP set to static, registered DNS. 3 domain controllers, all running Server 2003 (I suspect this may be the issue) Done so far: DNS registered, firewall turned off after IPsec was applied. Able to ping all 3 DC's with no issues Problem: Going through the DA wizard generates this error. I am logged in as a domain admin, verified that I can ping the DC, verified IPsec allows me to contact it. Since this version hasnt been readily deployed yet, there isnt much help available online from what I can find. Any assistance ayone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am still new to the server world as far as things are considered. I would fit, user wise, between Superuser.com and serverfault.com (junior admin) Thanks to anyone who may be able to assist!

  printer 1 connected to the desktop printer 2 connected to the same desktop that desktop is connected via Cat 5 to a wireless router a notebook is connected to that same router via WiFi The desktop Control Panel has just been reconfigured to share printers. (I assume this means that the desktop will now allow a notebook coming through the router to be able to access the two printers that are presently hooked up via the desktop--am I correct? Is that what it means?) The desktop can still print to either printer. It is presently okay. This notebook/printer relationship is a new configuration. The notebook, however, can't print at all (yet it can access the internet just fine). Any suggestions for it to be able to access the printers and be able to print via the desktop via the router? • How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

  I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. SELECT FloatTable.DateAndTime, TagTable.TagName FROM master.dbo.FloatTable FloatTable, master.dbo.TagTable TagTable WHERE FloatTable.TagIndex = TagTable.TagIndex AND ((FloatTable.DateAndTime={ts '2012-06-01 00:00:00'})) Any assistance would be much appreciated. • Windows audio service fails to automatically start after VirtualBox install

  I'm having a completely nonsensical issue in Windows XP SP3. Basically my "Windows Audio" service no longer starts automatically. Despite being set to "Automatic" I have to manually go in and start it. This issue didn't start until the most recent update of VirtualBox, but I can't find anything on the forums related to this specific issue. I've tried reinstalling the RealTek drivers as well, in the event that that had something to do with it. Any assistance is most appreciated! EDIT 1: It is the host's audio that won't start. The update of Virtualbox was merely the "marker" of when these events started occurring. Given it's the only variable/change I'm assuming a correlation.

• How to emulate a domain name - Webmin Setup

  I am currently working on a client project where they are using a custom CMS which relies on having the specific domains configured for it to work properly. So in English, that means that when I try running the site on my test environment, the entire website fails because it isn't located on the primary domain (and I'm pretty sure the domain is hard coded since there's no control panel to adjust the file locations). Anyway what I wanted to ask is whether it is possible to use my test environment URL but have Apache and the DNS emulate my clients website URL locally, rather than calling the actual name servers. Right now I have a virtual host setup in Apache but I am not sure where to go from there. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

• How do I capture and playback http web requests against multiple web servers?

  My overall goal is to not interrupt a production system while capturing HTTP Posts to a web application so that I can reverse engineer the telemetry coming from a closed application. I have control over the transmitter of the HTTP Posts but not the receiving web application. It seems like I need a request "forking" proxy. Sort of a reverse proxy that pushes the request to 2 endpoints, a master and slave, only relaying the response from the master endpoint back to the requester. I am not a server geek so something like this may exist but I don't know the term of art for what I am looking for. Another possibility could be a simple logging proxy. Capture a log of the web requests. Rewrite the log to target my "slave" web application. Playback the log with curl or something. Thank you for your assistance.
