• Does a .NET 4.0 website load faster for a reason?

  I have been using DotNetBlogEngine for many years, and today my host (JodoHost.com) officially turned on support for .NET 4.0. What I've noticed immediately is that the website loads tremendously faster on the first load, subsequent loads are only slightly faster. The website is compiled as a .NET 2.0 web application. Is there a known reason for this performance increase? Was there a change in the .NET 4.0 framework that improved the initial load time of websites into an application pool?   I've got an ASP.net file, and I'm trying to include dynamic code which was easy in classic ASP. Here is what I have tried so far: <%@ Register TagPrefix="TagPre" TagName="header" Src="alg/classes.aspx"%> and <!--#include file="alg/classes.aspx"--> But neither of these seem to work. What i want is follow some design pattern or architecture that will be help me in decoupling my code. I have idea about MVC and MVP architectures for Web App but i need different from that. I want to use OOPS concepts using abstract classes and interfaces, polymorphism etc in my app but not MVC and MVP. I dont know why? • Getting attachments from a mail account with .NET

  I'd like a free library for .NET to get attachments from an account (such as gMail, or others) via imap4 (not necessarely), and save them in a folder. Ideally it would allow me to get a list of them, and download only some given ones (filtering by extension, name, and/or size) and be free. • Asp.net cached objects staying in memory

  I have a asp.net web forms app that uses System.Web.Caching.Cache to cache xml data from a number of web services for 2 hours. webCacheObj.Remove(dataCacheKey) webCacheObj.Insert(dataCacheKey, dataToCache, Nothing, DateTime.Now.AddHours(2), Nothing) Every 90 minutes a Microsoft Search Server hits a particular (spider) page which calls the code to put the objects into the cache. The issue i have is that over a period of time, the memory usage of the application grows exponentially. Lets say that in a week, the memory usage of the application pool grows to over 1gb. I'm using IIS7 and no application pool recycling is currently enabled.

• Are there any web application frameworks usable with .NET 2.0?

  Apologies if this has been asked many, many times before - I'm afraid I couldn't find any satisfactory answers. I'm stuck in an environment (a bank) where, although we have VS 2008 on the development machines, production machines are locked down to the .Net framework 2.0 and SQL Server 2005. Are there any modern application frameworks that I could employ? I've looked at things like Spring.NET, PureMVC and ASP.NET MVC (S#arp Arch?), but I don't really have the luxury of time to investigate in depth. I don't want to initiate a war over which framework might be best, I just want to know if there are any I can actually use.

• VS2010 error: Unable to start debugging on the web server

  I get error message "Unable to start debugging on the web server" in Visual Studio 2010. I clicked the Help button and followed the related suggestions without success. This happens with a newly created local ASP.Net project when modified to use IIS instead of Cassini (which works for debugging). It prompts to set debug="true" in the web.config and then immediately pops up the error. Nothing shows up in the Event Viewer. I am able to attach to w3wp to debug. It works but is not as convenient as F5. I also have a similar problem with VS2008 on the same PC. Debugging used to work for both. I have re-registered Framework 4 (aspnet_regiis -i). I ran the VS2010 repair (this is the RTM version). I am running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. I do have Resharper V5 installed. There must be some configuration setting or registry value that survives the repair causing the problem. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks, Gary Davis ([email protected])

  Hi, I am trying to get some data relevant to a stored procedure (or funtion) back from a database using .Net. The first thing I need to be able to do, is get the stored proc from the database and turn it into string format. The information I need is: The return set of columns, tables used within the SP, Stored Procedures called from the SP. The only way of doing this at the moment that i can think of, is though parsing the text and looking for keyword matches. Is there a better way of doing this? Any ideas? Thanks.

• Debug website on host from virtual machine

  I have a Windows 7 machine hosting a Windows 7 virtual machine. I am developing a web application using visual studio 2010 on my host machine. I want to run the application in debug mode and access my localhost server from a browser on the virtual machine. (The purpose of this is to be able to debug an application that uses Windows Authentication using different users without having to log off and on for different users on my host machine...) I am using a bridged connection for the virtual machine. I googled how to solve this problem and most of the threads that I found said that if I was using a bridged connection, I could access the server on the host machine by just entering the IP address of my host machine into the url in the browser of the virtual machine. I have tried some different urls using the IP but none of them have worked. As an example, suppose I run my web application in visual studio on my host machine and its url is http://localhost:62789/MyPage.aspx Assume also that I ran ipconfig in CommandPrompt on my host machine and found out that the IP address for my host machine is xxx.xxx.xxx.x. What url should I enter on the virtual machine to access my web application? Thanks in advance.

• Disable Drag&Drop of files in Richtextbox in .NET

  Hello, I use a .NET richtextbox and I want to have the EnableAutoDragDrop property set to True. This allows user to drag&drop text, rtf and images around etc. However, I need to process files dropped into the richtextbox myself - I do not want them to be embedded as OLE objects when they are dropped. How can I overcome this? Is there any way to delete embedded files from richtextbox? (I've found API DragAcceptFiles which doesn't work for some reason.) Thanks!

  I have a treeview control that gets populated at runtime with a pyramid of employee names. I put the css scrollbar on the view by putting overflow:auto" in the tag where the treeview is located. The users are now asking me to to have the scrollbar go down in the treeview where a treeview item is selected. How do I make a scroll bar to go to a place where the treeview has been selected? Note: treeView1.SelectedNode.EnsureVisible(); is not available in asp.net need another way.

• Can't Add XSD to Class Project

  Background: I started with a large solution with many applications in it in VS 2008 and I'm trying to split it up. Steps to repeat: I create a new VS 2010 C# class project I right click and choose add existing item I choose the XSD file from my old project and import it. The original file is 67KB the imported file is 18KB Line 134,135 of the original file <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigType" DataSetColumn="ConfigType" /> <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigValue" DataSetColumn="ConfigValue" /> Line 135,136 of the resulting file <Mapping SourceColumn="ConfigType" DataSetColumn="ConfigType" /> <Mappi Part way through it's life my old project was upgrade from 2.0 to 3.5 so some of the code is. Manually copy and paste of the xsd source into the new file and updating the 2.0.0.0 to 4.0.0.0 allowed me to open it it in The GUI for editing XSD files. After fixing all the connection strings and right clicking on every query and clicking configure then finish I was able to gain access to one of the tableadapters out of 6. I'm stumped as to hoe to get this to compile. Once it compiles I'm open sourcing it so ask if you want to see the code.

• Tip on Reusing Classes in Different .NET Project Types

  All of us have class libraries that we developed for use in our projects. When you create a .NET Class Library project with many classes, you can use that DLL in ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications. However, for Silverlight and Windows Phone, these .NET Class Libraries cannot be used. The reason is Silverlight and Windows Phone both use a scaled down version of .NET and thus do not have access to the full .NET framework class library. However, there are many classes and functionality that will work in the full .NET and in the scaled down versions that Silverlight and Windows Phone use.Let’s take an example of a class that you might want to use in all of the above mentioned projects. The code listing shown below might be something that you have in a Windows Form or an ASP.NET application. public class StringCommon{  public static bool IsAllLowerCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^A-Z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }   public static bool IsAllUpperCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^a-z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }} The StringCommon class is very simple with just two methods, but you know that the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace is available in Silverlight and Windows Phone. Thus, you know that you may reuse this class in your Silverlight and Windows Phone projects. Here is the problem: if you create a Silverlight Class Library project and you right-click on that project in Solution Explorer and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu, the class file StringCommon.cs will be copied from the original location and placed into the Silverlight Class Library project. You now have two files with the same code. If you want to change the code you will now need to change it in two places! This is a maintenance nightmare that you have just created. If you then add this to a Windows Phone Class Library project, you now have three places you need to modify the code! Add As LinkInstead of creating three separate copies of the same class file, you want to leave the original class file in its original location and just create a link to that file from the Silverlight and Windows Phone class libraries. Visual Studio will allow you to do this, but you need to do one additional step in the Add Existing Item dialog (see Figure 1). You will still right mouse click on the project and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu. You will still highlight the file you want to add to your project, but DO NOT click on the Add button. Instead click on the drop down portion of the Add button and choose the “Add As Link” menu item. This will now create a link to the file on disk and will not copy the file into your new project. Figure 1: Add as Link will create a link, not copy the file over. When this linked file is added to your project, there will be a different icon next to that file in the Solution Explorer window. This icon signifies that this is a link to a file in another folder on your hard drive.   Figure 2: The Linked file will have a different icon to show it is a link. Of course, if you have code that will not work in Silverlight or Windows Phone -- because the code has dependencies on features of .NET that are not supported on those platforms – you  can always wrap conditional compilation code around the offending code so it will be removed when compiled in those class libraries. SummaryIn this short blog entry you learned how to reuse one of your class libraries from ASP.NET, Windows Forms or WPF applications in your Silverlight or Windows Phone class libraries. You can do this without creating a maintenance nightmare by using the “Add a Link” feature of the Add Existing Item dialog.   I have uninstalled VS 2010 and many other apps that I don't use anymore, and reinstalled it after. I have also reinstalled VS 2010 SP1. I'm now down to 3 updates, of which I am getting the error: "KB2522890 does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your computer." I have already disabled my antivirus and Windows Defender. It also happens to the other updates: VS10SP1-KB2529927-v2-x86 VS10SP1-KB2548139-x86 VS10SP1-KB2549864-x86 It is possible that Microsoft Update is right that they do not apply, as I only installed VS 2010 C# and Web development. Why is it recommending that I install them then?

  Having a hard time migrating user mailboxes across 2 forests. I've set up ADMT 3.2, No dns issues and fully route-able between the domains etc. Have come to migrate user mailboxes and the exchange shell just comes back with ... We have ran this command on the Exchange 2010 server on the target domain and when asked giving the credentials of an admin in source domain in the format : sourcedomain\source_administrator Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Rhys

  Is it possible in IIS 6 to administrate users as in IIS 7 (e.g. as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731783%28v=ws.10%29.aspx)? In IIS7 you can define users within the ASP.NET group with click on .NET users and it automatically creates a ms sql server db in background in the website directory. So far I didn't found anything about the issue, most forum questions are about how to migrate asp.net sites from IIS6 to IIS7.

• Should I upgrade Exchange 2003 or just upgrade the hardware?

  My organization currently has a 4 y/o Exchange 2003 email server (32-bit, Intel Pentium D @ 3GHz, 3GB RAM). It's run very well over the past 4 years but it is time to upgrade its hardware. This server would handle email for approximately 30 clients, a few OWA users with iPhones. My (somewhat ambiguous) question is, when I receive the new hardware should I build out a new Exchange 2003 deployment or should I look at Exchange 2007 / 2010? I've heard that Exchange 2010 requires Sharepoint 2010 (which I am currently not running). Are there benefits that a small-medium sized business can or can't do without? Am I making a horrible mistake staying with antiquated software? Other details: Exchange 2003 (v6.5 + SP2) single front-end server All opinions and thoughts are very much appreciated.

• Updating to Exchange 2013 - any way to do it now?

  Exchange 2013 is out, available for some epople already. Got if from the VLC Center, now trying to get an upgrade path that works for some customers. Problem: There is no upgrade. It is "install on new Server, move mailboxes. This means coexistence with Exchagne 2010 for the time to move the Mailbox. Sadly the only compatible Exchange is Exchange 2010 Sp3 - which is not going to be bout for quite some time. Any way to still do an update? Backup, restore to new Server? Any beta of the SP that is good enough to ONLY move the mailboxes? I do not care about the rest - this really is "install Exchange 2013, move mailboxes, UNINSTALL 2010". I am quite - ah - unhappy that at the end the only one who will be able to intall 2013 are new companies right now.

• Adding Exchange Multi Tenant to an existing Exchange Network

  I currently have an Exchange 2010 SP1 server in house, and due to some changes, it looks like i will need Multi Tenant support for a few extra domain names. Looking at the documentation i have found so far, it only mentions multi tenant support when upgrading from 2010 RTM - SP1, and not what you do if you have already got 2010 SP1 installed. So, from what i can gather, i have a few options: Install a new Exchange server with Multi Tenant support and migrate DBs over Back everything up and start again Something else...   we have our exchange server 2007 (10.10.2.11) at work with domain "dddddd.com" and ironport and it work just fine! we need to test some thing at work with Exchange 2010 !! so we came up with this idea: we created a locked network and install firewall (10.10.2.88) the locked network has it's own DC and Exchange servers! we used the domain "dddddd.loc" any way it will be deleted! IPs DC 10.0.0.1 EX 10.0.0.11 now the Exchange server up and running in the firewall (10.10.2.88) we opened the ports and forwarded it to the Exchange2010 (10.0.0.11) in our main DC we defined the zone dddddd.loc to the firewall and the MX records as well but when we test we get error now how to make it so that the 2010 will send email directly to the 2007 (we will not use it to more that that)? and the 2007 will send the email to 2010 if the email has the domain dddddd.loc ?

• Any way to overwrite (not merge) Outlook contacts when importing from a file?

  I'm trying to create a contact list for Outlook 2010 that will contain contact information for every person in my company. I intend on keeping the list current, which means I will be manually adding new employees to the contact list, and removing contacts who no longer work here. The contact list will reside in its own subfolder within the Outlook Contacts folder. I want to periodically export this contact list as a .csv file, and allow the other employees in the company to import it into Outlook on their own computer, thus providing them with a comprehensive and up-to-date company contact list. The problem is, Outlook 2010 only wants to merge contact lists, not overwrite them. This means that any contacts who are no longer with the company will not be removed from the contact lists on employee stations. Is there any way to force Outlook 2010 to overwrite the contact list? Oh how I long for the days of Outlook 2003 and its tidy .pab files.

• DLL-s needed to run ASP.NET MVC 3 RC on Windows Azure

  In this weekend I made one of my new apps run on Windows Azure. I am building this application using ASP.NET MVC 3 RC and Razor view engine. In this posting I will list DLL-s you need to have as local copies to get ASP.NET MVC 3 RC run on Windows Azure web role. Besides assemblies that are already references you may need to add references to some more assemblies. List of assemblies is here: Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure System.Web.Helpers System.Web.Mvc System.Web.Razor System.Web.WebPages System.Web.WebPages.Razor WebMatrix.Data You can find Razor and ASP.NET Web Pages related assemblies from folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET Web Pages\v1.0\Assemblies\ NB! If your project is using dynamically loaded assemblies that are not referenced from any of your project make sure you are including them as project items that are located in bin folder. This way these DLL-s are also put to deployment package and you don’t have to create code level references to them.
