  • Ruby Methods: how to return an usage string when insufficient arguments are given

    Hi, After I have created a serious bunch of classes (with initialize methods), I am loading these into IRb to test each of them. I do so by creating simple instances and calling their methods to learn their behavior. However sometimes I don't remember exactly what order I was supposed to give the arguments when I call the .new method on the class. It requires me to look back at the code. However, I think it should be easy enough to return a usage message, instead of seeing: ArgumentError: wrong number of arguments (0 for 9) So I prefer to return a string with the human readable arguments, by example using "puts" or just a return of a string. Now I have seen the rescue keyword inside begin-end code, but I wonder how I could catch the ArgumentError when the initialize method is called. Thank you for your answers, feedback and comments!

    I am trying to make a C extension for Ruby that includes a method returning a string, which will sometimes have character values that need to be in an unsigned char. In http://github.com/shyouhei/ruby/blob/trunk/README.EXT, all of the functions listed for turning C strings into Ruby strings take signed chars. So I couldn't do this: unsigned char bytes[] = {0xf0, 0xf1, 0xf2}; return rb_str_new(bytes, 3); How could I make a method that returns these types of strings? In other words, how would I make a C extension with a method returning "\xff"?

  • iphone sqlite3_column_text issue

    I have a column in sqlite3 table. Column has values like 1 ½” 1 ¾” 2 ½” etc. Column has VARCHAR datatype. I am using this code. pref_HoseDiameter = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 2)]; Now, when I am fetching these values from database, I am getting pref_HoseDiameter string values like this: 1 1/2" 1 3/4" 2 1/2" How to fetch those values as they are in database or how to convert them that look like database values.   • Best way to manage connection strings in a project containing both Classic ASP and ASP.Net 1.1 code?

    I have a project that I have inherited that is primarily a Classic ASP application; however, intermixed in the the application are a handful of ASP.net pages. Some of the ASP.net pages are 1.1 and do not use a code behind model. The classic ASP pages have a number of /include directories where there's a file for database connections. The ASP.Net pages have the connection string hard coded in in their code. I'm trying to clean up this mess of connection strings so it's easier to manage across development environments. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I may be able to effectively do this that will work for both Classic ASP and ASP.Net pages? Thanks

  • c# Regex on XML string handler

    Hi guys. Trying to fiddle around with regex here, my first attempt. Im trying to extract some figures out of content from an XML tag. The content looks like this: www.blahblah.se/maps.aspx?isAlert=true&lat=51.958855252721&lon=-0.517657021473527 I need to extract the lat and long numerical vales out of each link. They will always be the same amount of characters, and the lon may or may not have a "-" sign.     Folks does anyone knows of a PHP function to remove unmatched HTML tags from a string. for example<div> This is a string <b> with an unmatched bold tag </div>. If there isnt one then help me buld one, maybe I can have a function that counts the number of opening tags and matching closing tags. If they are not even then remove the first opening tag or if closing tags are more, it removes the last tag?

  • What is the correct way to unit test areas around exceptions

    Hi, Looking at our code coverage of our unit tests we're quite high. But the last few % is tricky because a lot of them are catching things like database exceptions - which in normal circumstances just dont happen. For example the code prevents fields being too long etc, so the only possible database exceptions are if the DB is broken/down, or if the schema is changed under our feet. So is the only way to Mock the objects such that the exception can be thrown? That seems a little bit pointless. Perhaps it's better to just accept not getting 100% code coverage? Thanks, Dan

I'm writing a web application that is supposed to connect to a SQL Server database; the connection is formed from the following database string: <add key="DatabaseConnectionString" value="server=DEVPC1\SQLEXPRESS;uid=USERID;pwd=PASSWORD;database=DATABASE"/> However, whenever I try and run the web application, I get a connection error, specifically: An error occurred attempting this login: Login failed for user 'USERID'. Any suggestions on how to go about debugging this? I'm not really familiar with SQL, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The question was --- By traversing each element of linked list just once find if the single linked list is circular at any point. To this I answered that we will store reference of each node while traversing the list in another linked list and for every node in the list being tested we will find if the reference exists in the list I am storing the references.     I'm having an issue where I'm trying to update the background gradient of an element with JavaScript based on values I specify. I tried this route: elem.style.backgroundImage = '-webkit-gradient(radial, '+x+' '+y+', 0, '+x+' '+y+', 800, from(#ccc), to(#333)), -moz-radial-gradient('+x+'px '+y+'px, circle cover, #ccc 0, #333 100%)'; Since Webkit and Gecko have two different syntaxes for CSS3 gradients, I need to specify both. However, the above code doesn't work. It works if I only have just the Gecko syntax or just the Webkit syntax, not both. I think you can check for CSS gradient support, but my question is, is there a way to check which syntax needs to be used without browser sniffing? Keep in mind that I need to set my gradients this way since the x and y coordinates of the gradient change dynamically. Hope this makes sense, thanks.

    In order to have the fast speed of website, the web sever compress (gzip) the html files before sending to our clients. When running selenium tests, it shows a pop-up saying: You have chosen to open ... which is a: Bin file from: http://... Would you like to save this file? "Cancel" "Save File" It seems that the compressed html file doesn't unzip and browsers recognise it as Binary file.

    Hi, I have got some strings to be matched via RegEx. We have a java application which reads the regex from a config file and takes two groups of strings, number of which are specified in the same config. E.g. CustomAction.523274ca945f.dialogLabel=Executing Custom Code... will be matched with (?m)^(?!#)\s*(\S*)\s*=\s*(\S*.*) What I need is to pick the first group "CustomAction.523274ca945f.dialogLabel" and exclude the random string in the middle so I end up with something like "CustomAction.dialogLabel" or "CustomAction..dialogLabel" well any other combination but the random string.     Ok, I'm lost. I am required to figure out how to validate an integer and String, but for some stupid reason, I can't use the Try-Catch method. I know this is the easiest way and so all the solutions on the internet are using it. I'm writing in Java. The deal is this, I need someone to put in an numerical ID and String name. If either one of the two inputs are invalid I must tell them they made a mistake. Can someone help me?
