  • Why do Ping and Dig provide different IP address than nslookup?

    When pinging my domain name which points to my home public IP from two different servers on my LAN, it shows them pinging different IP. Further investigation shows dig and nslookup providing different results. See below. A little history. My IP used to be 11.22.33.444 and is hosted by Comcast. I changed routers, and it somehow got changed to 55.66.77.888. I've since updated my 1and1 domain name to point to the 55.66.77.888. desktop is a basic server, runs the web server, and connects wirelessly to my LAN. laptop is a GUI and connected via CAT5. Both operate Centos6.4. My old router was a D-Link, and used their "Virtual Server" feature to pass port 80 to desktop. My new router is a Linksys, and I use their "Port Forwarding" feature to pass port 80 to desktop (however, I haven't gotten this part working yet). What is going on??? Why the different IPs? Obviously, it most somehow be stored on the server, but why does the actual machine even know the public IP since it is on a LAN? How do I purge the old IP?     On Linux you can create any layout you wish by editing the appropriate ASCII configuration files. On Windows the keyboard layout definitions are binary. Is there any tool that can create these binary keyboard layout configuration files? I grew up on the Macintosh international keyboard layout, which used the option key extensively, and now I would like to use the same layout on Windows. On Linux this Mac international keyboard layout exists for both the console as well as for X.Org. On Windows, the most similar layout is US International, which is not the same.

    I want to change song in spotify with a global key in ubuntu. This is possible on windows with a special key on keyboard, the "next song key"(?) How can I remap a key in ubuntu(no "next song" button here) to work as "next song" button? like "ctrl +right key". And how would i do to make this work with spotify, which is running thru wine? Basically i want to know what the ascii code for "next song" button is, and how do i map it to a key combination under ubuntu. And hope it routes this command thru wine without problem. Edit: I don't have the "next song" button on the ubuntu machine.

  • Debian 7: "Failure of key exchange and association"

    I'm installing Debian using the Live CD with GNOME and the non-free packages. The internet works just fine when using the live CD, but when you try to open the installer and select a network, it gives me the error of "Failure of key exchange and association". I've put everything in right, and tried multiple times. However, it never works. Am I just going to have to use ethernet to install? Thanks, people.

    Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random".     A friend asked me this: ...I stopped using KeyNote for one simple reason – contrary to the Mac marketing blurb, the final presentations do NOT work fine on Windows PCs – they look distorted and have formatting quirks which cannot be corrected because the Windows/Powerpoint file it has supposedly been saved as is in fact a non-editable file, kind of like a pdf. Is there a way to create Mac KeyNote presentation files so they look nice on Windows and can be edited?

    Hello, We are in the transition from Novell NetWare to Windows server 2008. In case of the printer server we print jobs thousands of pages long. NetWare printer manager has a handy function which allows to rewind a print job to a specified page. In case of a paper jam at the 750 page on a 800 page document this is really convenient. Does anybody know if there is a solution for this? The lists printed are in plain ascii lists with printer command characters embedded, and we are using dot matrix printers.   • DHCP and DNS on none AD 2003 Server PTR is updating but no A records

    I have a strange issue, I have a DHCP and DNS server running in a non AD environment, on Windows 2003 server. I setup DHCP to update DNS A and PTR records even if the client doesnt request it, but I only see PTR records updated, the A records are not created at all. The domain is "local" forward zone is called "local" and in the option 15 set to "local" (actual name) the PTR records are created with the right name (example: win64_ent.local), What am I missing here ?

  • Can't ping devices by IP address for devices allocated IPs by DHCP

    I have a home network with a Trendnet wireless router and a Windows Domain. The Domain Controller/DNS server is a Windows 2000 Server and is configured to forward queries to DNS servers provided by the ISP. The router provides DHCP and is configured with the Windows 2000 Server as the DNS server. The network has been set up for a couple of years and usually works fine. When I connect iPhones to the network over WiFi, the router can ping the iPhones through its browser based admin interface, but Windows machines that are part of the Windows Domain cannot. A laptop was connected to the network over WiFi that wasn't joined to the domain and it could see the iPhones. The router UI shows that the laptop has a reserved IP allocated via DHCP. All machines either have a static or DHCP allocated IP on the 192.168.0.* subnet. Router - 192.168.0.1 - Static - Wired Windows Domain Controller - 192.168.0.8 - Static - Virtual Windows 7 Workstation - 192.168.0.200 - DHCP Auto - Wired VMWare ESXi Host - 192.168.0.201 - Static? - Wired iPhone 1 - 192.168.0.202 - DHCP Auto - WiFi iPhone 2 - 192.168.0.203 - DHCP Auto - WiFi Windows Vista Laptop - 192.168.0.204 - DHCP Reserved - WiFi Using the Windows 7 machine (200), I try to ping each machine and the only DHCP machine that responds is itself. The other DHCP machines fail with Reply from 192.168.0.200: Destination host unreachable.. Using nslookup fails with *** domain.controller.name can't find 192.168.0.203: Non-existent domain. Using the Windows 2000 Domain Controller (8), I try to ping each machine and the only DHCP machine that responds is the Windows 7 machine (200). Pinging the other DHCP machines fails with Request timed out.. Using nslookup also fails with *** domain.controller.name can't find 192.168.0.203: Non-existent domain. Using the iPhone 2 (203), I try to ping (Network Ping Lite) the machines with static IP addresses and that works fine. When I try to ping the Windows 7 machine (200) it is unable to get a response. How do I configure the DNS server/Windows Domain/Router properly so that the Windows Domain machines can see the IPs allocated via DHCP?

    This is my first attempt at virtualizing SQL server on VMWare and I want to make sure I am doing things correctly. Should I have SQL server installed on the C: drive / same partition as the OS, Then add a virtual disk for the Data files, say 300GB, and then another virtual disk for the log files say 100GB? Or should I add 2 300GB vdisks, for the data files mirror them in the operating system, and then add a non mirrored vdisk of 100GB for LogFiles??

    From the Windows command prompt, I have FTPd to a Windows web server. I can get a file, and I can see a directory listing with dir, but I want to save that list locally. I tried dir > c:\somefile.txt, and the file is created, but it's blank. Same thing if I do ls > c:\somefile.txt. The result is the same when I FTP from a Linux box.     What would be the best tablet PC with dedicated graphics. I can find a few, but most seem to be from around 2006-07. Is there anything newer that has both the tablet-based swivel screen and a non-integrated graphics board? Thanks.

  • ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

    Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen. This doesn't happen every night, but most. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell inspiron. I've included some HW specs, and also dmesg output. Please let me know what other logs may be useful. thanks!
