• How do I install Ubuntu to a USB key?

  If you are hurrying to reply, System ? Administration ? StartUp Disk Creator -- no, that's not what I'm talking about. I want to try Ubuntu 11.04's Unity without touching my existing Ubuntu install. To do this, I need to install the nVidia drivers first (sigh). To do this, I need changes to persist a reboot. To do this, I need to really install Ubuntu on a USB key. How do you do that? What I tried I tried to make a USB key from Testdrive, then boot from it, then choose "Install Ubuntu." The installer refused to install to the installation media itself. I tried, from my installed copy of Ubuntu: sudo kvm /dev/sdb --cdrom .cache/testdrive/iso/ubuntu_natty-desktop-i386.iso ...but the installer didn't detect the disk properly.

• What are the benefits vs costs of comment annotation in PHP?

  I have just started working with symfony2 and have run across comment annotations. Although comment annotation is not an inherent part of PHP, symfony2 adds support for this feature. My understanding of commenting is that it should make the code more intelligible to the human. The computer shouldn't care what is in comments. What benefits come from doing this type of annotation versus just putting a command in the normal PHP code? ie- /** * @Route("/{id}") * @Method("GET") * @ParamConverter("post", class="SensioBlogBundle:Post") * @Template("SensioBlogBundle:Annot:post.html.twig", vars={"post"}) * @Cache(smaxage="15") */ public function showAction(Post $post) { }

• Did Google Delete my index?

  I have a website that I haven't had much time to take care of. I updated it 4 times since last October, the contents are all original and informative. I can see those cache from Way back Machine and the site was indexed in Yahoo, but not in google. Did I get my index on Google deleted because I did not update it often? Normally Google crawl often and index fast, I just got really worried if I did something wrong. Is it possible that I set something wrong in the hosting or something? Please help me

• Wireless always disconnect

  I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 for Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Emachines E625 With Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless always disconnects every 10 sec. It didn't do that with 10.10. The pages will not reside on the customer's servers for logistical reasons and because we need to maintain control of the content. The plan is for the customer to set up a mod_rewrite rule that will funnel certain types of URLs to a single server-side handler script that will grab the appropriate file from a CDN and just output its content.   Does anyone know how to write a macro for a special character? I know LibreOffice currently doesn't have a way to set a special character to a keyboard shortcut. However, I want to work around this with a macro. My plan is to create a macro for a special character then set a keyboard shortcut to that macro. Problem is I don't know the first thing about writing a macro. Any one have a template or something that works? I also know about the compose key, but I guess I am lazy and want to actually insert special characters with as few keys as possible.

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

• Cannot mount USB disks due to "not authorized" error

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 (.2?) installed. I don't plan to need GUI after setup so I modified the grub to start in console. However, whenever I want to start up GUI I need to type startx. Simple/basic stuff. However I seem to be hitting a snag: I am having trouble mounting/accessing USB flash drives in the GUI I started in the console. "Unable to mount location - not authorized". Seemed like it should be an easy fix, but can't figure out how I'm overlooking it. Can someone help me out?

  I am frustrated to no end with my current hosting provider, mediaTemple. Yes, they are flashy, and have some decent degree of flexibility with their GS plan, which I have. But anytime I install a site that needs a database, it is slow. like really slow. Taking anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds just to load a page. I would host in house, but there are a lot of complications that come with a LAMP server that I don't want to deal with. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time developing. What can you recommend?

• Getting older packages from ppa

  Can I install an older version of a specific package from a ppa? Specifically, I want to get an older version of xserver-xorg-video-intel (and dependencies) from xorg-edgers ppa. The reason is that the older version seemed to work with my hardware. The present version seems to feature (I would like to found out if it is really the source) severe crashes as the present stable releases of this package do. I tried apt-get install pkg=version but didn't succeed. I am afraid that the packages in the cache are lost after apt-get clean I do not even know the precise version number of the previous version, assuming that it doesn't have to be exactly one less. The current version is xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.20.15 Alternatively: Is there a place, e.g. at launchpad, where I can manually download the previous version of the package?

• How to shrink Windows partition with unmovable files in dual boot installation

  To install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I have to shrink Windows 7 partition C:. But due to some unmovable files, I cannot shrink as much as I plan by using Windows own shrinking tool. I guess many of you who have both OSes on the same hard drive must have similar experience. How to solve this problem? Any reference that can help is also appreciated! Thanks and regards! UPDATE: I have identified what unmovable file currently stop further shrinking: \ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles\00010015.wid::$DATA If I understand correctly, the file belongs to Windows Search. Can I set up somewhere in Windows system settings to temperately eliminate the file and similar ones (because there are many similar files under the same directory which I guess will also stand in the way of shrinking and unmovable by defrag)?

• How can I change this isometric engine to make it so that you could distinguish between blocks that are on different planes?

  I have been working on an isometric minecraft-esque game engine for a strategy game I plan on making. As you can see, it really needs some sort of shading. It is difficult to distinguish between separate elevations when the camera is facing away from the slope because everything is the same shade. So my question is: can I shade just a specific section of a sprite? All of those blocks are just sprites, so if I shaded the entire image, it would shade the whole block. I am using LWJGL. • Why don't smart phones have an auto-forget password feature? [closed]

  Storing passwords to external services (e.g. corporate email servers) on smart phones is very insecure, since phones are more easily stolen. Has any vendor implemented a feature to only cache a password in memory for a limited amount of time? After the time period has elapsed, the app would ask for the password again. EDIT: I should've clarified - I'm aware that many (most?) users are lazy and want to just "set it and forget it". The always-remember feature will probably always be present. I was curious about an option to enable auto-forget for the security-conscious.

Since i work under windows and linux indifferently i usually make it portable (it's not my first version of this set of functions), but i want to do something different this time and dedicate one version to windows, and one other to linux. With that i wonder for the windows version, if the WSA* functions can have any interest using them instead of the psock ones.   I've just started a programming job where I'm applying my 'How to code' knowledge to what I'm being taught of 'How to Program' (They are different!). As well of this I'm taught how to capture requirements from clients, so as to start a new project. How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually I'm tangled in code, and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off putting. Conversely when given a fixed task, and fixed requirements, it's much easier to programme from a - b. So how do I plan a personal programming project?

• Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

  I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.
