• Is there a way to make the flash[:notice] appear above, or before, the flash[:error] ?

  So, I'd like to be able to display both a flash[:notice] and a flash[:error] on the same action, but I'd like for the :notice to always be displayed above (or before) the error. Is there a way to do this? In my controller, I thought I could just code the flash[:error] before the flash[:notice], so that rails will display it correctly, and it does a vast majority of the time. But every now and then they are randomly switched, and I can't seem to figure out why. So, how can I ensure that a flash[:notice] is always displayed above an :error ?

• Serializing ActiveRecord objects without storing their attributes?

  I'm working on a problem where I need to store serialized hierarchies of Ruby objects in the database. Many of the objects that will need to be saved are ActiveRecord objects with a lot of attributes. Instead of saving the entire objects and then refreshing their attributes from the DB when I load them (in case they changed, which is likely), it would be easier to just store the references (class and database id) for these objects. Does anyone know if there's already a way to do this in Rails, or if there's an existing gem for it? Wanted to check if something existed before spending a ton of time hacking on it.

So, for our UserMailer example, if you have welcome_email.text.plain.erb and welcome_email.text.html.erb in app/views/user_mailer, Action Mailer will automatically send a multipart email with the HTML and text versions setup as different parts. • Sqlite3 activerecord :order => "time DESC" doesn't sort

  rails 2.3.4, sqlite3 I'm trying this Production.find(:all, :conditions = ["time ?", start_time.utc], :order = "time DESC", :limit = 100) The condition works perfectly, but I'm having problems with the :order = time DESC. By chance, I discovered that it worked at Heroku (testing with heroku console), which runs PostgreSQL. However, locally, using sqlite3, new entries will be sorted after old ones, no matter what I set time to. Like this (output has been manually stripped): second entry is new: Production id: 2053939460, time: "2010-04-24 23:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-24 23:00:05" Production id: 2053939532, time: "2010-04-25 10:00:00", created_at: "2010-04-27 05:58:30" Production id: 2053939461, time: "2010-04-25 00:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-25 00:00:04" Production id: 2053939463, time: "2010-04-25 01:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-25 01:00:04" Seems like it sorts on the primary key, id, not time. Note that the query works fine on heroku, returning a correctly ordered list! I like sqlite, it's so KISS, I hope you can help me... Any suggestions?

• Why are my ActiveRecord class instance variables disappearing after the first request in development

  I have a class instance variable on one of my AR classes. I set its value at boot with an initializer and, after that, never touch it again except to read from it. In development mode, this value disappears after the first request to the web server. • Help getting ActiveScaffold to work properly

  Hey there I was curious about the ActiveScaffold Rails plugin, but somehow I can't get it to work properly. I've followed the steps which are described on http://activescaffold.com/tutorials/ . The table and everything shows up and when I click on "Create new", the dialog pops up. However, when I fill out the form and click "Create", I just get "500 Internal server error". In the server log, it says "NameError (wrong constant name ###):", with ### being what I entered in the first form field. If I don't enter anything in the form, it says "NoMethodError (undefined method `new_record?' for #):"... So what am I doing wrong here? Thanks in advance for your help :)

• Removing all installed Gems and starting over

  I recently started learning Ruby and Ruby on Rails, and have watched a plethora of getting started materials. I have been finding lately that I keep getting errors where gems won't install or they will be installed but they can't be used for some reason, and I have decided that I want to remove everything down to once again just having Ruby installed and start over with the installation. One training video had me install most of my gems with RVM, so I don't know if that changes anything. So in short my question is "How to I get rid of RVM, Rubygems, and all installed Gems so that I can start over with just Ruby?" Edit: I am on Mac OS 10.6

• Git + Capistrano = Automatic Release Notes Generator ?

  We use git (github) and capistrano (like 99% of the Rails shops out there) to deploy our app to production. What I'd like to do is, after every cap * deploy generate a text file containing all the git commit comments since the last deploy. I can then take that list of commit comments, clean it up, and put it somewhere for consumption. "git log" http://book.git-scm.com/3_reviewing_history_-_git_log.html has plenty of options for fetching log messages, but I don't see an easy way in capistrano to return the current and previous commits, or even the last date/time a deployment occurred, so I can pass that to git log Thoughts? I can't be the first one doing this... Thanks!

  Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue im having, basically id like to have Account.create after a PayPal notification is received, There is a simple cart model which corresponds to line_items within the cart so add_account_to_market would look like this in pseudo code def add_account_to_market if status == "Completed" find the line items(via cart_id) that correspond to the cart.id that just been paid create an account with user_id set to the current carts user id end end Ive never tried to do something like this in Rails and its not working, Ive been pulling my hair out all night trying to fix this, hopefully someone can help or point me in the right direction. But I don't know if I want all developer machines to beusing s3 for storage of all our test and dev images. Maybe it's not an issue -- but it seems like a waste to have everyone storing all our images in s3. I've heard of some ppl who store images on s3 'hacking' dev environments to store images locally on the file system -- and then using s3 in prod only. What are other people doing?

• Help porting a bit of Prototype JavaScript to jQuery

  I have already implemented some AJAX pagination in my Rails app by using the example code for the will_paginate plugin--which is apparently using Prototype. But if I wanted to switch to using jQuery for future additions, I really don't want to have the Prototype stuff sitting around too (yes, I know it's possible). • rake db:create gives some problem when used from limited account

  I am using mysql 5.1 and mysql gems version is 2.73 This is giving the following error message when I try to run it from a limited account in my XP. If try it using the admin account, it works fine. I think this is wierd because it cannot be the problem of mysql gem. (in F:/Temp/wassup) !!! The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2.   Hi! I've got model A and model Attach. I'm editing my A form with nested attributes for :attaches. And when I am deleting all attaches from A via accepts_nested_attributes_for how can I get after_update/after_save callbacks for all of my nested models? Problem is that when I am executing callbacks in model A they are executed right AFTER model A is updated and BEFORE model Attach is updated, so I can't, for example, know if there is NO ANY attaches after I delete them all :). • Autotest notifications on Ubuntu virtual environment

  I am having trouble getting Rails autotest notifications to work on the Engine Yard Vagrant environment. On the Mac, I normally get the notifications via Growl. However, on the virtual environment (which runs Ubuntu) that doesn't work. I tried running Linux notification setups such as libnotify+autotest-notification, but I get the following error: libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_call: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed Another path would be to have Growl receive the notifications remotely, but I don't even know where to begin with that... • Using delayed_job to process file uploads across multiple servers

  Does anyone have any good resources on how to do this? Basically, I'm working on a project (in Rails) where people can upload files. They might be big. I'd like to process them using delayed_job before sending them to S3. I'd also like to do this processing on a separate job queue server, rather than on the webserver itself. I'd rather not have to upload the files to the webserver, then transfer them to the job queue server, and then upload them to S3 if I don't have to. Thanks.

  I'm having trouble with Twitter's implementation of an oauth_bridge_code for the @anywhere api. I've seen a few walkthrough's on how to use this functionality but I can't seem to get the request to work for me. I'm using Ruby on Rails with the oauth gem.   I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy. • Scaffolding A model with an attribute of type datetime creates a 10 years range in the form

  For a simple rails application ( 1.86 /2.3.5) , lets say I run a simple scaffold script/generate scaffold blog title:string content:text published:date When I open up the new / edit view for the blog controller in index/new.html.erb , I see that the drop down enabler for date select has a date range of 2005 - 2015 , i.e 5 years +/- I tried to change this default behavior by introducing this code f.date_select :entered, :start_year => 1970, :end_year => 2020 Apparently this has no impact to the behavior mentioned above. How do I increase the date_select range which seems to be default?

• What's the best technology for a medium complexity web application?

  I'm planning to work on a web application of reasonable complexity and am wondering what technology to go with. It will probably start with one person, but there will be 2 or 3 more eventually. My first requirement is to be able to do this as quickly as possible - preferably with as less code as possible. Secondly requirement is that it should be able to scale easily. I have worked with .NET and PHP. So, I am thinking about ASP .NET MVC or CakePHP. It appears to me that CakePHP might be quicker. I did look at Ruby on Rails, but the learning curve is a little steep (which is not an issue if I can be convinced that this is the best tool for the task), I'm not too crazy about the huge number of files generated and I have heard about scalability issues as well as it's applicability to complex situations. I look forward to your opinions on your favorite technology and why.

• How do i style a JSON feed in my view?

  My rails app gets the following JSON feed from mixcloud and sticks the results into my index page At the moment when I do this, the entire contents of my feed are displayed unformatted in one big blob of scary looking text (without the curly JSON brackets) I only want to display specific values from the feed in the view. From the feed in question lets say for simplicity that I just wanted to display all values with a key of "url" In case I'm doing something wrong here's my code: # podcast controller def index # I'm using a class method to get the feed @feed = Podcast.feed end # podcast model def self.feed feed = JSON.parse(open("http://api.mixcloud.com/alivefrommaryhill/feed").read) end # index.html.haml .feed = @feed I can't figure out how to style the results and display only certain items from the feed. • Unicorn: Which number of worker processes to use?

  I am running a Ruby on Rails app on a virtual Linux server that is capped at 1GB RAM. Currently, I am constantly hitting the limit and would like to optimize memory utilization. One option I am looking at is reducing the number of unicorn workers. So what is the best way to determine the number of unicorn workers to use? The current setting is 10 workers, but the maximum number of requests per second I have seen on Google Analytics Real-Time is 3 (only scored once at a peak time; in 99% of the time not going above 1 request per second). So is it a save assumption that I can - for now - go with 4 workers, leaving room for unexpected amounts of requests? What are the metrics I should have a look at for determining the number of workers and what are the tools I can use for that on my Ubuntu machine?

• How to make/monitor/deploy daemon processes in JRuby

  I'm currently porting a Rails App currently using REE to JRuby so I can offer an easy-to-install JRuby alternative. I've bundled the app into a WAR file using Bundler which I'm currently deploying to GlassFish. However, this app has a couple of daemon processes and it would be ideal if these could be part of the WAR file, and potentially monitored by Glassfish (if possible). I've looked at QuartzScheduler, and while meets my needs for a couple of things, I have a daemon process that must execute every 20 seconds as it's polling the database for any delayed mail to send. If anyone can provide any insight as to how best to set up daemon processes in a JRuby/Java/Glassfish environment any help will be greatly appreciated! :)
