  • How do I check for available "Automatic Updates" via script / cli

    I asked this on superuser, but I think this may have been a more apropriate place. We are trying to automate server reboots, but one of the "gotchas" we are running into are that they want us to install updates by manually clicking "sure, install updates" during monthly Windows reboots. If I had a way to check to see if updates are in fact waiting, we'd be ok with rebooting automatically via a script and just failing if this is the case. My problem is I can't figure out how to check to see if there are in fact updates waiting to be installed, without logging in. Is there a file or particular service status I can check for? Maybe with Powershell or something similar? The current setting used is "Download updates but do not install automatically"

  • IPv6 in a Small Business

    I’ve been tasked to identify a new server and IT equipment for the company I work for (employees <20). I’m looking at getting a SBS 2011 Standard box. My Question is: Apart from ensuring that our router is IPv6 compliant, is there anything else I need to do/investigate to ensure that we won’t have IPv6 related problems in the future? When investigating this I can only find references to DNS Mangers etc. The SBS 2011 box will be used for exchange and remote log in access – it won’t be hosting any websites. Also will VOIP phone systems be affected by IPv6? (We are running a rather old VOIP system, would that need to be updated?

  • How do I test switching compilers from MSVS 6 to MSVS 2008?

    When switching from MSVS 6 to MSVS 2008, what major differences should I look for when testing the software? I'm coming from more of a QA perspective. We have two programs that work closely together that were originally compiled in Visual C++ 6. Now one of the programs has been compiled in Visual C++ 2008 in order to use a specific CD writing routine. The other program is still compiled under MSVS 6. My manager is very concerned with this change and wants me to run tests specific to this change. Since I deal more with QA and less with development, I really have no idea where to start. I've looked for differences between the two, but nothing has given me a clear direction as far as testing is concerned. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Is there a way to find out how much space (on disk) a row in my database takes up? I would love to see it for SQL Server CE, but failing that SQL Server 2008 works (I am storing about the same data in both). The reason I ask is that I have a Image column in my SQL Server CE db (it is a varbinary[max] in the SQL 2008 db) and I need to know now many rows I can store before I max out the memory on my device.

  • What should I do to recompile my static library (originally written in VS6) in visual studio 2008?

    There is a static library A with c++ classes wrapped by a C API in VS6. I developed a static library B in VS6 using callbacks from library A. The library B is used by the program C (commercial software) as a "user defined library" and linked to produce the program D. Questions: 1) When program C uses VS 6 it works, should it work fine with VS 2008? Because it doesn't. 2) When I tried to recompile library B in VS 2008 it gave me a .lib file with only 28KB, and the old one had more than 2MB. Is it ok? What Am I probably doing wrong?     My company produces a cross-platform server application which loads its configuration from user-editable configuration files. On Windows, config files are locked down at Setup time to allow reading by all users but restrict editing to Administrators only. Unfortunately, on Windows Server 2008, even local administrators no longer have admin privileges (because of UAC) unless they're running an elevated app. My question is: if a Windows Server 2008 admin wants to edit an admins-only config file, how does he normally do it? Is he forced to use a text editor which is smart enough to auto-elevate when elevation is needed, like Windows Explorer does in response to access denied errors? Or is there something that we can do in our app (e.g. in ACLs we lay down at setup time) which signal apps (or explorer) that elevation is needed before editing the file or which otherwise make our app friendlier to admins running on modern Windows OS's?

  • New to VS.net (VB.net) 2008. Windows 7 aero glass stuff.

    Hey all, i have been using VB.net 2008 for a few months and i have a question. I compiled my program and ran it in a VM running windows 7. However, the progress bar looks like it does in XP. It doesn't have that cool look to it like I've seen in many other programs running in windows 7. I have downloaded the 3.5 .net framework with sp1 and also the sdk for windows 7 (1.4+ gb dvd) but i still see nothing. Is there a check-box i am missing in VS 2008 to enable these types of features? Maybe some type of code i need to place in the program? Thanks! David

  • Can a SQL Server 2008 database support both a REST and SOAP web services within two different endpoints?

    Say you have a SQL Server 2008 database. You build a SOAP web service. You then deploy or publish this using Visual Studio 2010 in one website. Now, using the same database, you build a REST web service, in a different solution. You deploy this on another website. Can you consume the endpoints and/or .svc file of both the SOAP and REST web services, though they reference the same SQL Server 2008 database? I don't see why not, but before I go down this path and spend days I'd like to make sure. Also if there's a performance hit to the database if it is running both SOAP and REST at the same time--again, I don't see why it would matter, but I must make sure. Thanks.

    I'm a developer that has a Windows Service that runs on a production server that sends emails that are entered into a database on a database server. Although the service is set to start automatically, whenever the web server gets patched (which happens every other week), for some reason the service fails to start and various emails don't get sent. I don't actually have access to the server, so I have to request a build administrator to start the service. What I want to know is whether there is any reason for the service to fail to start when the server is patched?

  • Troubleshooting inconsistent ODBC connectivity

    I'm attempting to integrate UPS WorldShip with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database but the connection is very inconsistent. UPS claims this is a DSN/Windows problem and I have not been able to convince them otherwise. The integration is quite simple: my shipping guy clicks a button which opens a form where he enters an order #. After pressing enter the shipping information will be pulled from the database for that order #. The problem is that WorldShip often times thinks the DSN does not exist. However, I am able to open WorldShip's customization tool and browse all the tables and fields in the database my DSN is connected to which means at the very least my DSN does, in fact, exist. The reason this has been so difficult to troubleshoot is because there is no consistency to the problem and I'm not able to reliably repeat any behavior. That is to say that rebooting the PC doesn't cause the connection to break and opening the integration tool and viewing the tables and fields doesn't cause the integration button to work. Is there some way for me to monitor this connection from the SQL server or get any clues as to why it fails? As requested by TallTed here is a sample of the trace file I created. After a mere 5 hours the trace file was over 130MB so there's no way I could provide it in its entirety.   • Windows Server NTFS volume list file name encodings and any illegal file names

    I'm having to deal with a Windows Server (NTFS) file server and our backup application appears to be failing with certain files. According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS#Internals NTFS apparently supports file names encoded in UTF-16 but according to their support team, our backup application only supports UTF-8. I'd like to confirm whether this is actually the problem by seeing the file name encoding for myself. The files that are failing appear to be using plain English A-Z letters and other ASCII characters. No accents or non-English letters etc. I suppose even though the letters appear to be plain A-Z the file name could still be encoded in UTF-16. Does anyone know of a utility or script that can recursively go through all files in a directory and show the encoding of the file name? Then I could try renaming to UTF-8 to see if the backup can proceed. I'm not a Windows developer so can't write this up myself. Presumably the encoding of the file name should be stored in the FS somewhere and therefore it should be possible to expose this.

  • Cannot access shares via full domain name on Server 2008R2

    Hi, I have a strange issue. We have a 2008R2 PDC and BDC. I can join the domain fine and everything seems "normal". However, on some of the other 2008R2 servers, I am unable to do things like a gpupdate. When I try, I get an error that the clocks are wrong (they aren't) and that I don't have permission. So far, this has only affected our 2008R2 servers -- the Win 7 clients are fine. The really strange things is if I browse to: \\mydomain.lan\sysvol - I get the error. But! if I browse to: \\MYDOMAIN\sysvol - it works fine. I can also access the \hostname.domain\sysvol remotely for each of the DC's and it's fine. So in short, it appears the permissions are fine since I can access them all individually on the same account. It also seems unlikely it's on the server as most clients can access it fine. The only drama I have is when I try to use the full domain name (which of course gpupdate does) on a 2008R2 server. Also, it's not just sysvol...netlogon has the same issues too on the affected machines. Any ideas? Thanks! Drew

    I have a standalone DC in an isolated lab. I have installed the SUR tool and found no errors. I ran SFC and found no errors. I have attempted to install Windows Backup feature using Powershell, but received the same error about the computer needing to be restarted. Powershell cmdlets will list all of the installed roles and features. The rest of Server Manager works without problems. What can I do to get Server Manager Roles and Features working properly again?   • Recommended Win2k8 Server software to fix my RAID-0 issue

    I'm running an Asus P6T V2 Deluxe. It has six SATA ports and supports onboard RAID. I am using two of those ports for a RAID0 array of 1.5TB Seagate drives using the onboard RAID controller. One of them is giving me SMART warnings and I want to preemptively replace it. I pulled out two other 1.5TB drives from another computer and am ready to use one or both, if necessary. I can't run any SMART diagnostic software from within Windows because it only sees the hardware RAID-0 array, not each individual drive. The first thing I tried was a slow sector-by-sector copy using a free tool called EASEUS Disk Copy. Used the bootdisk, copied (took like 16 hours), unplugged the defective drive and plugged the new one in its place. The motherboard didn't recognize the new drive as being part of the known setup, so it did not want to boot. The second thing I tried was using other software (I forget the name) to copy the partition from within Windows. The first software failed because I had a server operating system. I found another software (I forget the name) which supported a server OS and did a partition copy onto the new drive. This seemed to work and the OS started to boot, but blue screened and started a reboot cycle. I'm assuming the software I was using was no good as it was trying to copy the boot disk while it was in use. I am looking for recommendations on what software to use to fix my problem without doing a re-install. Everything is backed up but my computer works fine and I'd like to avoid re-installation when possible. However, my system would be back up now if I had just started over on a second RAID array. :)

  • PPTP connection fails with errors 800/806

    I've got a client (Server 2008 R2) that won't connect to our production environment PPTP VPN server (Server 2003, running RRAS). The server is behind a firewall that has TCP1723 open as well as GRE. Other clients at our office are able to connect just fine. Our office is behind a Juniper SSG5-Serial firewall, but all outgoing traffic is allowed, and multiple other clients are able to connect to VPN servers without issues. I've also setup a completely different VPN server on another network outside of our office. The functioning clients connect just fine - the Server 2008 R2 machine doesn't. Thus it's definitely a problem with this machine in particular. I've rebooted it. I've disabled the firewall, no dice on either. I've run PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT on the server/client and they're able to communicate perfectly - indicating there's no problem using neither TCP1723 nor GRE. The Server 2008 R2 machine is also running as a VPN server itself (incoming connection) and that's working perfectly. We have the issues no matter if there are active incoming connections or not. I'm not sure what my next debugging step would be; any suggestions? EDIT: The event log on the server has the following warning from RasMan: A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets. Obviously this points to GRE being a potential problem. But seeing as I have other clients connectiong without problems, as well as PPTPSRV and PPTPCLNT being able to communicate, I'm suspecting this might be a red herring. Running Wireshark on the client shows it trying and retrying to send a "71 Configuration Request" While the server shows the incoming client requests, but apparently without replying: Given that this is GRE traffic, I think rules out the GRE traffic being blocked. Question is, why doesn't the server reply? This is the Configuration Request the server receives from the non functioning client (meaning no response is sent to the client request): And this is the Configuration Request the server receives from the working client: To me they seem identical, except for differing keys and magic numbers, and the fact that one client receives a response while the other doesn't.

Double-check with the settings and click Next to Configure the farm install. 15. Click the Install software prerequisites, this works fine with the internet connection. (However, if you do not have internet connection, it is a bit tricky to install window azure AppFabric as it has to be installed using the prerequisite installer. Your computer might reboot a few times in the process.) 5.After the prerequisites are installed `completely, you can then install the Preview. Click the Install SharePoint Server and Enter the Product key you get from the Preview download page. 6. Accept the License terms and Click Next. 7. Leave the default path for the file location. 8. You can now start the installation process 9. After binary files are installed, you then can configure your farm using the farm configuration wizard. 10.Specify the Database server and the install account 11. Specify SharePoint farm passphrase. 12 Specify the port number , you should choose your own favorite port number. 13. Choose Create a New Server Farm and click next. 14. Double-check with the settings and click Next to Configure the farm install. 15. Finally, your farm is configured successfully and you now are able to go to your Central Admin site http://sp2010:6666/ 16. You should configure the services manually or automate using PowerShell (If you like to understand why,you can read the blog post here) ,however I will use the wizard to configure automatically here  as  this is a test machine. After the configuration is complete, you now be able to see your SharePoint Site. 17.To start the evaluate the Preview , you need to install Visual Studio 2012 RC , Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012,SharePoint 2013 Designer Preview , Office 2013 Preview.
