• C# can I lock a method parameter?

  We have a class variable ArrayList binaryScanData in a class. In all methods having access to it, we put lock(binaryScanData) on it because it is shared. Now we want to move one of those methods out to another util class to make it a static method. We will pass that binaryScanData into the method like this: public static void convertAndSaveRawData(ref MemoryStream output, ref ArrayList binaryScanData) Our questions are followed: how can we sychoronize that binaryScanData? can we do the same as it is originally? ref is necessary? It will only be read in that convertAndSaveRawData method.

  Hi, I'm new to Java and I have a beginner question: NumberFormat is an abstract class and so I assume I can't make an instance of it. But there is a public static (factory?) method getInstance() that allow me to do NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getInstance(); I'm quite confuse. I'll be glad if someone could give me hints on: 1) If there is a public method to get an instance of this abstract class, why don't we have also a constructor? 2) This is an abstract class ; how can we have this static method giving us an instance of the class? 3) Why choosing such a design? If I assume it's possible to have an instance of an abstract class (???), I don't get why this class should be abstract at all. Thank you.

• Why array size in llvm created by llvm's internal tools is not good enough for llvm?

  I'm getting strange error message from the following code: ArrayType * arrayType = ArrayType::get(Type::getInt32Ty(ctx), 0); stack = builder->CreateAlloca(arrayType, ConstantArray::get(arrayType, std::vector<Constant *>())); This code compiles fine but it gives me llvm::Value* getAISize(llvm::LLVMContext&, llvm::Value*): Assertion `Amt-getType() == Type::getInt32Ty(Context) && "Malloc/Allocation array size is not a 32-bit integer!"' failed. during execution. What's interesting, is that I never said of what type array size should be, it was created somewhere inside helper functions. So I naturally see no good reason for assert to be there. But I must be doing something wrong anyway, can you help me spot the problem? Thanks in advance. PS. LLVM, as good as it is, lacking documentation tremendously.

  Is there a way in Terminal Services to set limits on memory related parameters for a process. For example working set size and, possibly, if it makes sense, total virtual memory allocation for the session? To turn the question around, we have an application which cannot allocate as much virtual memory running on a terminal server as it can when running on a desktop PC (both I would expect to have a limit of 2GB for user mode address space) and I was wondering if there is another limit for processes or users on a terminal server. Perhaps even 2GB per user rather than per process.

  Hi All I might be vaguing out here but I'm looking for a nice place to put set based helper operations in linq so I can do things like; db.Selections.ClearTemporary() which does something like db.DeleteAllOnSubmit(db.Selections.Where(s => s.Temporary)) Since I can figure out how to extend Table<Selection> the best I can do is create a static method in partial class of Selection (similar to Ruby) but I have to pass in the datacontext like; Selection.ClearTemporary(MyDataContext) This kind of sucks because I have two conventions for doing set based operations and I have to pass the data context to the static class. I've seen other people recommending piling helper methods into a partial of the datacontext like; myDataContext.ClearTemporarySelections(); But I feel this makes the dc a dumping ground for in-cohesive operations. Surely I'm missing something. I hope so. What's the convention? TIA

I can only use laser_data[360] and laser_data[0] for this one robot. I think this would eventually navigate the maze. However, I am using the Player Stage platform, and Stage freezes when the Roomba comes close to a wall using this code, I have no idea why. Also, if you can think of a better maze navigation algorithm, please let me know. Thank you!

• How can I turn on DynamicCompression feature of IIS programmatically?

  I'm making an installer program for my web application. My web application uses CSS and JS heavily, so I want to enable both Static and Dynamic HttpCompression for IIS7/7.5. It needs 2 steps: I can modified the web.config, put <httpcompression> tag, it's ok. DynamicContentCompression must be turned on in Windows Feature to make httpCompression work. Static HttpCompression is enable by default in IIS7 and IIS7.5, but Dynamic HttpCompression is not enable by default (although it's available). I can do manually by turn on: Start/ControlPanel/ProgramsAndFeatures/TurnWindowsFeatures on or Off/IIS/WWW Service/Performance features/Dynamic Content Compression, but How can I programmatically turn it on that Windows Feature? I can use PowerShell, C# in my installer. Any idea how I might be able to do this? Thanks.

• Generating a Call Hierarchy for dynamicly invoked method

  Hello, Today's world of dynamic invoke, reflection and runtime injection just doesn't play well with traditional tools such as ctags, doxygen and CDOC. I am searching for a method call hierarchy visualization tool that can display both static and dynamic method invocations. It should be easy to use, light during execution and provide helpful detailed information about the recorded runtime session. Now I guess Callgrind could be considered a valid solution for the family C. What tool / technique could you suggest to create a call graph for both static and dynamic method invocation for JVM based bytecode? The intended end result is a graphical display (preferably interactive) which can show path from main() to each method that was invoked. During research for this post I stumbled upon javashot, it seems that this is the kind of approach I'm aiming at, I would prefer that this would be integrated into a kind of profiler or alike which than can be used from within my IDE (Eclipse, IntelliJ, Netbeans and alike). • Best practices for organizing .NET P/Invoke code to Win32 APIs

  I am refactoring a large and complicated code base in .NET that makes heavy use of P/Invoke to Win32 APIs. The structure of the project is not the greatest and I am finding DllImport statements all over the place, very often duplicated for the same function, and also declared in a variety of ways: The import directives and methods are sometimes declared as public, sometimes private, sometimes as static and sometimes as instance methods. My worry is that refactoring may have unintended consequences but this might be unavoidable. Are there documented best practices I can follow that can help me out? My instict is to organize a static/shared Win32 P/Invoke API class that lists all of these methods and associated constants in one file... (The code base is made up of over 20 projects with a lot of windows message passing and cross-thread calls. It's also a VB.NET project upgraded from VB6 if that makes a difference.)

• Why is Apache seg faulting?

  We have a production server that seems to Seg Fault a few times every day. The fault is picked up by Apache and logged in the error log - but there seems to be no traffic around the time. If it's a request generating the fault then it looks like it happens before any other logging is made so I can't see how it's happening so it's very hard to debug.   MS Cassini Development Web Server is a nice product that executes web requests in a similar way that IIS7 does. Every request (event for static content) goes through the same .Net pipeline without exception. All custom HttpModule can handle any request. But sometimes you don't want these modules to execute for certain content (most often static content). In this regard, MS Cassini doesn't read/obey <system.webServer> web.config settings like IIS7 does. I'm particularly interested in these settings. <system.webServer> ... <handlers /> <modules /> </syste.webServer> Does UltiDev's Cassini (a separate payable product upgraded from MS Cassini) web server read these settings and execute as the web.config tells it to?

• WPF Using commands to slow to update UI controls

  Hi, I bind a command to a button through command property and doing a command binding in the page it is placed. In execute method I create an instance of a class that contains the background worker and I start it (this is a long task). The background worker (bw) class contains a variable isRunning that it is set to true before DoWork method is executed and to false when RunWorkerCompleted is executed. So from the code behind of the page where button is placed, in CanExecute method I set e.canExecute to true if bw is no running (isRunning = false), and e.canExecute to false if isRunning = true. WHen I press the button, it launch bw process for a long time and the button gets disabled. Ok this is correct, but when background worker (bw) finishes, the button doesn't returns to enabled until I press it again. When it is disabled and I press (when bw is finished) it gets enabled. • Linq-to-sql Compiled Query returning object NOT belonging to submitted DataContext

Therefore I can not reuse returned object and link it to another object obtained from datacontext thru non compiled queries. • Why is thread local storage so slow?

  I'm working on a custom mark-release style memory allocator for the D programming language that works by allocating from thread-local regions. It seems that the thread local storage bottleneck is causing a huge (~50%) slowdown in allocating memory from these regions compared to an otherwise identical single threaded version of the code, even after designing my code to have only one TLS lookup per allocation/deallocation. This is based on allocating/freeing memory a large number of times in a loop, and I'm trying to figure out if it's an artifact of my benchmarking method. My understanding is that thread local storage should basically just involve accessing something through an extra layer of indirection, similar to accessing a variable via a pointer. Is this incorrect? How much overhead does thread-local storage typically have? Note: Although I mention D, I'm also interested in general answers that aren't specific to D, since D's implementation of thread-local storage will likely improve if it is slower than the best implementations.

• Will client side performance improve if images/scripts/styles on different subdomains?

  Hi, I have a domain specifically for static content, so cookies don't travel along with requests to images/scripts/css. Now, I think I've read somewhere that most browsers only open one download thread for each domain/subdomain, so different static content can't be downloaded in parallel if on the same domain. Will it make difference for browsers if i place scripts in script.mycdn.com, styles in css.mycdn.com and images in images.mycdn.com? Will it allow to let browser download images at the same time as scripts and styles? mycdn.com is of course a made up name :) Thanks! Andrey

But when come to my beloved VC6, it give me error : main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static void __cdecl A::push(int)" (?push@A@@SAXH@Z) Any workaround? I just want to ensure my function definition is re-inside cpp file.
