  This question is related to another wiki I found on SO, but I'd like to develop a more comprehensive example of an automated ASP MVC 2 development environment that can be used to develop and deploy a wide range of small-scale websites by beginners. As far as characteristics of the dev environment go, I'd like to focus on beginner-friendly over powerful since the other wiki focuses more on advanced, powerful setups. This information is targeted for beginners (that already know C# and understand web dev concepts) that have selected... ASP.NET MVC 2 as their dev framework Visual Studio 2010 Pro (or 2008 Pro SP1) as their IDE Windows 7 as their OS and are looking for a quick and easy-to-setup environment that covers managing, building, testing, tracking, and deploying their website with as much automation as possible. A system that can be used for becoming familiar with the whole process, as well as a launching point for exploring other, more custom and powerful systems. Since we've already selected the Compiler, Framework, and OS, I'd like to develop ideas for... • UITextField in UIAlertView doesn't respond to cut/copy/paste on second showing

  Edit Reposting... I accidentally marked my previous question as "commuity wiki" and didn't realize that answers to wiki posts don't generate reputation. I"m adding a UITextView to a UIAlertView with the following code: UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Enter Name Here" message:@"this gets covered!" delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"Dismiss" otherButtonTitles:@"OK!", nil]; UITextField *myTextField = [[UITextField alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(12, 45, 260, 25)]; CGAffineTransform myTransform = CGAffineTransformMakeTranslation(0, 60); [alert setTransform:myTransform]; [myTextField setBackgroundColor:[UIColor whiteColor]]; [alert addSubview:myTextField]; [alert show]; [alert release]; [myTextField release]; If I place that code in a standard action method: (IBAction)testAlertView:(id)sender { ...the above code... } Then the first time I show the UIAlertView the cut/copy/paste popup menu will show in UITextField that's been added to the UIAlertView. (For instance if I tap and hold, then "Paste" will popup after I release. The problem is after working correctly the first time, none of the cut/copy/paste buttons will show up again next time I show the UIAlertView (new instance) unless I restart the app. Does anyone know why, or how to fix this problem? Bonus information I just found out that I can get things to always work if I create an show the alert within a UIActionSheet delagate callback. For instance this always works (cut/copy/paste always shows up when in the UITextField when appropriate) (void)actionSheet:(UIActionSheet *)actionSheet clickedButtonAtIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex { ...the above code... } Any idea what might be happening in this second case that make things work? I don't want to use a UIActionSheet in my app, so I'd like to find a way to make it work from a plain old action method. Thanks, Jesse

• Link Maven OSGi to Maven NetBeans Platform Project

  I am using NetBeans 6.9 Beta and I would like to accomplish the following: Set up a project representing the main application using Maven (for instance "Maven Project", "Maven NetBeans Application") Ideally, the project should only contain the necessary libraries to run in Apache Felix (I would like to be able to right-click the project and select "Run in Felix") I do not want that the project contains all the NetBean Platform APIs I would prefer to implement the modules using OSGi. For instance "Maven OSGi Bundle", "Maven NetBeans Module" + OSGi These are the problems, which I have at the moment: The standard Maven archetype ("Maven NetBeans Application") seems always to select all APIs and I have not found a way to deselect APIs - in normal NetBeans Platform Applications that can be accomplished by going to the project properties and deselected the platform modules) - I guess it has something to do with the NetBeans repository (http://bits.netbeans.org/maven2)? Do I have to create another repository? When creating normal "NetBeans Module" with OSGi support, the modules contain both NetBeans Module and OSGi meta data, which is nice. But the "Maven NetBeans Modules" have only NetBeans meta data and the Maven OSGi Bundles have only OSGi meta data). I figured out how to add modules to the project by using project / new and then placing the modules in the Maven project folder. However, I do not quite know yet how I could link to modules from other locations (NetBeans uses Maven modules, which have to be in the same directory as the project?). • Bibliography behaves strange in lyx.

  Hi! I have created a Bibliography section in my document written in lyx. It uses a book layout. For some reason it did start over again when I added some more entries. The new entries was made some time later than the first ones. I just went down to key-27 and hit enter. Then it started on key-1 again. Does anyone know why it behaves like this? Does it simply work the max(count) friend in common (facebook) or the max(count) follower in Twitter? or any other algorithms they implement? I think the second part is true because running the loop dict{count, person} for person in contacts: dict.add(count(common(person))) return dict(max) is a silly act in every refreshing page. 4. • Parallel scroll textarea and webpage with jquery

  This is both a conceptual and how-to question: In wiki formatting, or non WYSIWYG editor scenarios, you typically have a textarea for content entry and then an ancillary preview pane to show results, just like StackOverflow. This works fairly well, except with larger amounts of text, such as full page wikis, etc. I have a concept that I'd like critical feedback/advice on: Envision a two pane layout, with the preview content on the left side, taking up ~ 2/3 of the page, and the textarea on the right side, taking up ~ 1/3 of the page. The textarea would float, to remain in view, even if the user scrolls the browser window. Furthermore, if the user scrolls the textarea content, supposing it has exceeded the textarea's frame size, the page would scroll so that the content presently showing in the textarea syncs/is parallel with the content showing in the browser window. I'm imagining a wiki scenario, where going back and forth between markup and preview is frustrating. I'm curious what others think; is there anything out there like this? Any suggestions on how to attack this functionality (ideally using jquery)? Thanks

  I'm using Apache Jackrabbit to store versioned data. I'm following the template listed on the Jackrabbit wiki for versioning basics, but there's one thing that isn't working as expected. After I run the code from the wiki, I try saving another version of the node, then getting its version string: child = parentNode.getNode("childNode"); child.checkout(); child.setProperty("anyProperty", "Blah3"); session.save(); Version thisVersion = child.checkin(); System.out.println(thisVersion.getName()); The output of this code is 1.0.0 , when I want it to be 1.1 . My goal is to be able to remove the last -- and only the last -- version of a node, and have the next version have the same name as the removed version. I only care about doing this when the node is being added; if I can check in the node, and read the name (to get the version number) without an exception being thrown, I'm fine with not being able to remove the version. Looking around the internet, I can't find a way to accomplish this.

  Does anyone know of a way to get HSL from an linearRGB color (not an sRGB color)? I've seen a lot of sRGB<-HSL conversions, but nothing for linearRGB<-HSL. Not sure if it is fundementally the same conversion with minor tweaks, but I'd appreciate any insight someone may have on this. Linear RGB is not the same as linearizing sRGB (which is taking [0,255] and making it [0,1]). Linear RGB transformation from/to sRGB is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRGB. A reference on an open source project Grafx2 @ http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/issues/detail?id=63#c22 in which the contributor states that he has done Linear RGB <- HSL conversion and provides some C code in an attachment to his comment in a .diff file (which I can't really read :( ) My intent is to send from sRGB (for example, FF99FF (R=255, G=153, B=255)) to Linear RGB (R=1.0, G=0.318546778125092, B=1.0) using the code above (for example, the G=153 would be obtained in Linear RGB from sRGB_to_linearRGB(153 / 255)) to HSL, modify the Saturation by 350% and going back from HSL-Linear RGB-sRGB, the result would be FF19FF (R=255, G=25, B=255). Using available functions from .NET, such as .getHue from a System.Drawing.Color does not work in any sRGB space above 100% modulation of any HSL value, hence the need for Linear RGB to be sent in instead of sRGB.

• Which software for intranet CMS - Django or Joomla?

  In my company we are thinking of moving from wiki style intranet to a more bespoke CMS solution. Natural choice would be Joomla, but we have a specific architecture. There is a few hundred people who will use the system. System should be self explainable (easier than wiki). We use a lot of tools web, applications and integrated within 3rd party software. The superior element which is a glue for all of them is API. In example for the intranet tools we do use Django, but it's used without ORM, kind of limited to templates and url - every application has an adequate methods within our API. We do not use the Django admin interface, because it is hardly dependent on ORM. Because of that Joomla may be hard to integrate. Every employee should be able to edit most of the pages, authentication and privileges have to be managed by our API. How hard is it to plug Joomla to use a different authentication process? (extension only - no hacks) If one knows Django better than Joomla, should Django be used?

• Integrating Magento with a simple static website.

  Magento is an awesomely powerful ecommerce platform. That said, it is also very complex, and I'd like to know if there is a relatively simple way to utilize Magento as our mISV site's backend to fulfill orders without actually "using" Magento's framework to build the site, run the site, etc. In other words, I don't want to use the built-in CMS, etc. since we have a static website already built. I'd just like our Buy Now buttons to utilize the checkout stuff, and would like to be able to use the back-end part to keep track of orders etc. I was able to accomplish this "fairly" easily with osCommerce, but Magento is proving to be a little more difficult to wrap my head around since I've only started looking at it for a few days now. I found another person asking this same exact question on the Magento wiki (along with several others in the forum), and none of them ever receive a reply for some reason. I noticed that there are may Magento experts on Stack Overflow, so I thought I'd give it a go here. This is an example of one question asked by someone on their wiki, and it captures the essence of what I'm trying to accomplish: Hi, as far as I understand, all shopping cart/eCommerce solutions I see are full featured PHP driven web sites. This means that all the pages the user interacts with, are server generated, and thus, the experience, is tied to the magento framework/workflow. I’d like to integrate bits and pieces of eCommerce/shopping cart in my existing website. Effectively, I’d like to have: 1) on a product information page, a “buy now/add to cart” button that adds to a cart 2) on every page, a view cart/checkout option 3) on a checkout page, with additional content already in place, having the magento “checkout” block integrated in the page (and not the entire page generated from Magento). Have any of you done this with Magento? This is for a simple one-product website so any advice you could share would be highly appreciated.

I thinking about this from the standpoint where I want to make it easier to bring new hires up to speed quickly by having all this on a checklist we follow when setting them up, and then while I'm at it making it easier for the new hires or existing team members to bring new powerful toolkits and ideas into the environment without disrupting things. • Plotting an Arc in Discrete Steps

  Good afternoon, Background My question relates to the plotting of an arbitrary arc in space using discrete steps. It is unique, however, in that I am not drawing to a canvas in the typical sense. The firmware I am designing is for a gcode interpreter for a CNC mill that will translate commands into stepper motor movements. Now, I have already found a similar question on this very site, but the methodology suggested (Bresenham's Algorithm) appears to be incompatable for moving an object in space, as it only relies on the calculation of one octant of a circle which is then mirrored about the remaining axes of symmetry. Furthermore, the prescribed method of calculation an arc between two arbitrary angles relies on trigonometry (I am implementing on a microcontroller and would like to avoid costly trig functions, if possible) and simply not taking the steps that are out of the range. Finally, the algorithm only is designed to work in one rotational direction (e.g. counterclockwise). Question So, on to the actual question: Does anyone know of a general-purpose algorithm that can be used to "draw" an arbitrary arc in discrete steps while still giving respect to angular direction (CW / CCW)? The final implementation will be done in C, but the language for the purpose of the question is irrelevant. Thank you in advance.   I'm trying to get django running on my dreahost account. I've been trying to sort of use two tutorials at once: the one on the dreamhost wiki and the one in the django book. I installed django using the script on the wiki page, but I ran into trouble immediately while trying to work through the django book. It says: To start the server, change into your project directory (cd mysite), if you haven’t already, and run this command: python manage.py runserver This launches the server locally, on port 8000, accessible only to connections from your own computer. Now that it’s running, visit 127.0.0.1:8000 with your Web browser. You’ll see a “Welcome to Django” page shaded in a pleasant pastel blue. It worked! Those instructions seem to assume that you're developing locally, not on a shared server. Where the heck am I supposed to look for the "Welcome to Django" page after starting the server? In my webroot? No dice. Anyway, I tried to blunder ahead through the django book to its hello world tutorial (chapter 3). But once I've edited the view file and the URLconf, I don't get a nice clean "hello world" text. Instead (as you can see) I get an "import error". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Appropriate uses of Monad `fail` vs. MonadPlus `mzero`

  This is a question that has come up several times for me in the design code, especially libraries. There seems to be some interest in it so I thought it might make a good community wiki. The fail method in Monad is considered by some to be a wart; a somewhat arbitrary addition to the class that does not come from the original category theory. But of course in the current state of things, many Monad types have logical and useful fail instances. The MonadPlus class is a sub-class of Monad that provides an mzero method which logically encapsulates the idea of failure in a monad. So a library designer who wants to write some monadic code that does some sort of failure handling can choose to make his code use the fail method in Monad or restrict his code to the MonadPlus class, just so that he can feel good about using mzero, even though he doesn't care about the monoidal combining mplus operation at all. Some discussions on this subject are in this wiki page about proposals to reform the MonadPlus class. So I guess I have one specific question: What monad instances, if any, have a natural fail method, but cannot be instances of MonadPlus because they have no logical implementation for mplus? But I'm mostly interested in a discussion about this subject. Thanks! EDIT: One final thought occured to me. I recently learned (even though it's right there in the docs for fail) that monadic "do" notation is desugared in such a way that pattern match failures, as in (x:xs) <- return [] call the monad's fail. It seems like the language designers must have been strongly influenced by the prospect of some automatic failure handling built in to haskell's syntax in their inclusion of fail in Monad.

My Question is Why?, and how can I assure that both this: $foo->bar = function(){ echo "test"; }; $foo->bar(); and this $foo = new Bar; $foo->bar(); are called properly? Extra Points if you can point to documentation stating why this problem occurs.

• Glassfish 3: How do I get and use a developers build so I can navigate a stack trace including Glas

  I am migrating a JSF 1.1 application to JEE 6 Web profile, and doing it in steps. I am in the process of moving from JSP with JSF 1.1 to Facelets under JSF 1.2 using the jsf-facelets.jar for JSF 1.2, and received an "interesting" stack trace when trying to lookup a key in a Map using a "{Bean.foo.map.key}" where the stacktrace complained about "key" not being a valid integer. (After code introspection I am workarounding it using a number as the key). That bug is not what this question is about. In such a situation it is essential to be able to navigate the source of every line in the stack trace. In Eclipse I normally attach a source jar to every jar on the build path, but in this particular case the Glassfish server adapter creates a library automatically containing the jars. Also there is to my knowledge no debug build of Glassfish where sources are included in the bundle. Glassfish is a non-trivial Maven project, and a bit picky too. I am not very familiar with maven, but have managed to checkout the code from Subversion and build it for the 3.0 tag according to http://wiki.glassfish.java.net/Wiki.jsp?page=V3FullBuildInstructions#section-V3FullBuildInstructions-CheckoutTheWorkspace - it appears to be the code corresponding to the official released 3.0 version. After finishing the "mvn -U install" part, I have then tried to create Eclipse projects by first using "mvn -DdownloadSources=true eclipse:eclipse" and then import them in Eclipse JEE 3.5.2 and specifying the M2_REPO variable but many of the projects still have compilation errors, and I cannot locate any instructions from Oracle about how to do this. I'd appreciate some help in just getting a functional IDE workspace reflecting the 3.0 version of Glassfish. I have Eclipse 3.5.2, Netbeans 6.8 and 6.9 beta, and IntelliJ IDEA 9, and Linux/Windows/OS X do do it on.

• Which Java Service or Daemon framework would you recommend?

  I have encountered many different ways to turn a Java program into a Windows Service or a *nix daemon, such as Java Service Wrapper, Apache Commons Daemon, and so on. Barring licensing concerns (such as JSW's GPL or pay dual-license), and more advanced features, which one would you recommend? All I intend to do is convert a simple Java program into a service; I don't need anything fancy, just something that runs as a service or a daemon, so I can start it or stop it in the service manager, or it runs for the lifetime of my *nix uptime. EDIT: I've decided to make this community wiki. I didn't start this question with an intention to find an answer for a problem I really had. I was just doing some reading and researching and chanced upon this question, so I was looking for recommendations and the like. Sorry for not doing this sooner or doing this at first. I didn't know what community wiki was for when I first started, and I completely forgot about this question until now. Many thanks for the answers!

• Lost in Nodester Installation

  I am trying to install my own version of Nodester. I have tried on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and now with CentOS. I am not the most skilled Linux user (~2 months use) so I am at a loss at this point. The instructions are located at https://github.com/nodester/nodester/wiki/Install-nodester#wiki-a.
