• MySQL died during the night on a 12.04.1 Ubuntu

  I can't explain why, but somehow during the night, one of my MySQL running on an Ubuntu 12.04.1 box broke. The service is running but I can't login anymore (to SQL), the previous password is not working anymore. It does not looks like the server has been compromised (nothing in /var/auth.log) It looks like some automatic security upgrade (server is configured to perform those) has occured and broke something. The MySQL server has restarted a couple of times in the logs at the time errors started to happen (I get email when CRON task fail). In the logs it complains about an unset root password (I do have cron job running all day using SQL so the password was set & working for months). Anyway I can't login without password either! Do you have any idea of what could have happened? How do I get my databases back? • error executing aapt, all of the sudden

  I know there are a lot of these topics around but none seem to help in my case, nor describe it exactly. The best similar one is aapt not found under the right path. My problem is that I can be using Eclipse for a whole evening programming, compiling and using my device, and then suddenly I get "error executing aapt" for my current project and ofcourse R.java isn't (properly) generated anymore. I then restart Eclipse and everything goes away. I'm seeing this once a day on average however. I've recently switched to amd64 and installed the latest Android-2.3 SDK and matching tools. I know that there is now a platform-tools folder that has an aapt version that should work SDK version independently. At first I had added this directory to my PATH, as instructed on the SDK website. I've also tried not adding it to my path and making a link platforms/android-9/tools so that every SDK version might use it's own old copy. Needless to say, platform-tools/aapt is there and has the right permissions, and I have been able to execute it on the command-line at any time. When I do write a faulty xml file or sorts, and appropriately get an error, I see an extra line that says "aapt: /lib32/libz.so.1: no version information available". I'm running a recent Gentoo linux system. I have everything installed to support x86 on amd64, but have re-emerged emul-linux-x86-baselibs and zlib just to be sure. The problem persists. I do see some pages that spell horror over some zlib bugs, but I'm not sure if that's related. I realize I'm not on the reference Ubuntu platform, but surely the difference cannot be that great? It might very well be a bug in aapt or the tools itself. Why would it suddenly stop working? I also experience that the ids in R.java were incorrect, namely that simple findViewById() code would give ClassCastExceptions because of mixed ids the one time, and then work perfectly without any changes bu only a "clean project", in the aftermath of a failing aapt. When I recently was trying to export a signed apk, I ran into another error message (full details from the Eclipse error view) regarding aapt I hadn't seen before. Note here too, that I can just restart Eclipse and can export apks again without problems, at least for a little while. I'm starting to think it is related to lack of memory on my system. The message "onvoldoende geheugen beschikbaar" means "insufficient memory available". I have also been seeing insufficient memory errors in DDMS when I'm dumping HPROF files. • Image not loading onto JPanel?

  I have been trying to figure out how to add an image to a JPanel as a background, but still have complete control over the placing of JButtons, JLabels, and etc. This is one method I found, but it is crashing and not loading the image or buttons.   I've been playing with new URL monikers in Windows for a utility I'm working on. When I run the new URL from Start Run, it just runs. If I send the URL to myself via Notes or enter it into the IE address bar, I get a window which says: "Do you want to allow this website to open a program on your computer?" Program: UrlMonikerTest1 Address: urltest://ticket?param1=42&param2=Derf [CheckBox] Always ask before opening this type of address [Button] Allow [Button] Cancel Allowing web content to open a program can be useful, but it can potentially harm your computer. Do not allow it unless you trust the source of the content. What's the risk? Given that the utility will only run on internal machines to which it will be deployed using SCCM and to which I can apply Group Policy, can I disable this message for this application/URL moniker alone?   Problem The first aim was to run HBase standalone. Navigating to ip:60010/master-status is succesfull once HBase has been started. The second aim is to run a distinct ZooKeeper quorum. ZooKeeper has been downloaded and has been started: netstat -nato | grep 2181 tcp 0 0 :::2181 :::* LISTEN off (0.00/0/0) The conf/hbase-env.sh was changed as follows: # Tell HBase whether it should manage it's own instance of Zookeeper or not. export HBASE_MANAGES_ZK=false in order to avoid HBase starts ZooKeeper once HBase has been started. However, the following error occurs once HBase has been started. Could not start ZK at requested port of 2181. ZK was started at port: 2182. Aborting as clients (e.g. shell) will not be able to find this ZK quorum. Question How to disable the startup of ZooKeeper by HBase and run ZooKeeper separately?

  Hello, How do I grant administrator rights to a running WCF service hosted in IIS7? The problem is, my code works fine in a test console application runned as an administrator, but the same code used from WCF service in IIS7 fails. When I run the same console test application without admin rights, code fails. So, how do I grant admin rights to a WCF service hosted in IIS7? Do I grant admin rights to IIS7 service? Can I grant rights to a specific WCF service? How do I do 'Run as an administrator' on IIS7 or specific website? Thanks! (That's the question, here is a more detailed description of a situation: I am trying to capture frames from a webcam into a jpg file using Touchless library, and I can do that from a console application with admin rights. When I run that same console app without admin rights I cannot access a webcam in code. Same thing happens in a WCF service with the same code.)

• backup exec - backup to disk offline

  Hi We are running backup exec 9.1 doing a backup to disk to portable hard disk drives. When we run the backup manually it works fine. But when the backup is setup to run in the evening on a schedule it does not run as the backup to disk folders goes offline and therefore has to be switched back on line. After we have done this the backup runs and completes fine. Any ideas? We have tried leaving the progam open and this makes no difference. Server is Windows 2003 SBS

  Hi. I have a problem with uninstalling Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended Beta 2. I wanted to uninstall it but I cancelled the process. Then I was asked if there was a problem without uninstallation if I want to change to compatibility mode. I accidentally chose to change to compatibility mode. Since then, every time I try to uninstall it, I get an error that the installer cannot run in compatibility mode. How can I fix it? I look for installer file and it's not marked to run in compatibility mode. I cannot find the file that was marked to run in compatibility mode after answering mentioned question. • WinSat command line closes too fast

  I'm trying to do some analysis under Windows 7 as to why I can't get a Windows Experience Index (WEI) rating due to disk issues. To this end, I'm trying to run winsat from the command line with :- winsat disk -seq -read -drive c and winsat disk -ran -write -n 2 but the command window is closing too quickly to be able to read the results. I've tried opening a seperate cmd window to run it in but it still insists on launching its own window to run in, closing straight away. Any idea how I can see the output?

• HyperV on Domain Controller or DC on HyperV?

  I want to setup a little fileserver/domain controller/sharepoint server. SharePoint shouldn't run on the DC directly, so I want to use HyperV. But I never used it before, so I wonder: Should I install the Domain Controller and HyperV Role and run 1 VM for SharePoint? Or should I run HyperV server and then 2 servers, one for SharePoint and 1 for DC? Usage is minimal with only 1 user. Hardware will be an Athlon II X3 with 3x2.9 GHz and 4 GB RAM. Operating System will be Server 2008 R2 Standard in all cases.

  I'm trying to get Eclipse to compile and run a HelloWorld class but it can't even do that. I have installed Eclipse x86 SDK 4.2.0 together bit with the latest JRE and JDK both in 64 bit as well. I also have the PATH variables set to respond to command prompts. When I try to run the following code: class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!" ) ; } } And it returns the following error: Exception occurred executing command line. • runit - unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist

  I'm trying to figure out why runit will not boot or give me the status for the managed applications. Running on Ubuntu 12.04. I created /service, /etc/sv/myapp (with a run script, a config file, a log folder and a run script inside of it). I create a symlink from /service/ to /etc/sv/myapp When I run sudo sv s /service/* I get the following error message: warning: /service/myapp: unable to open supervice/ok: file does not exist Some of my Googling revealed that supposedly rebooting the svscan service might fix this, but killing it and running svscanboot didn't make a difference. Any suggestions? Am I missing a step here somewhere?

• Forward local port or socket file to remote socket file

  Hi All, Quick question - I run two linux boxes, one my own desktop and the other my VPS. For security reasons on the VPS end I opted for socket connections to MySQL (/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock). I know I can tunnel like this: ssh -L 3307:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] if I set up the remote sql server to listen on some port, but what I want to know is can I do something like: ssh -L /path/to/myremotesqlserver.sock:/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock thereby tunnelling two sockets, as opposed to two ports? A perfectly acceptable solution would also be to forward a local port to the remote socket file, but where possible I'm trying not to have tcp servers running on the remote box. • SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won’t start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• Network Transfer Rate on SMB/FTP

  Hi, We're trying to optimise our network transfer rate from the client PCs to the file server, but having no luck. If I run an iperf test between a client PC (Windows XP) and our server (Linux) with a large TCP window size (the default is 8kb) I can get 60 Mbps. But when I run an SMB transfer speed test all I get is around 35 Mbps. When I run an FTP transfer speed test all I get is around 32 Mbps. I thought this was to do with the TCP window size, but I have now increased that to 256960 and it made no difference at all. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or is 35 Mbps all I should expect? • How can I make check_nrpe wait for my remote script to finish executing?

  I have a python script that's being used as a plugin for NRPE. This script checks to see if a process if running on a virtual machine by doing an SSH one-liner with a "ps ax | grep process" attached. When executing the script manually, it works as expected and returns a single line of output for NRPE as well as a status based on whether or not the process is running. When I attempt to run the command setup to execute this script (from my Nagios server), I instantly get the output "NRPE: Unable to read output", however when I run the script manually it takes about a second before it returns output. Other commands run just fine, so it would seem like NRPE needs to wait a second or two for output rather than instantly failing, but I've been unable to find any way of accomplishing this; any tips? Thanks PS: The virtual machines are not accessible from anywhere other than the host machine, hence the need for the nrpe plugin to ssh from the host into the VM to check the process.

• How can I get Virtual Server 2005 R2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  For various reasons (old VT-less hardware, and .vhd support) we need to still run Virtual Server 2005 R2. It's just for lab/demo work but we'd like to run the host on the newest Windows OS possible. It's documented and at least partially supported to run the old Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 (non-R2). I've done that before. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the scenario in the title above to work.   I have a question very similar to this one, but I want to continuously run perfmon, during reboots and throughout the day. Further, I'd like to generate a perfmon report every 10 mins or so. The original question tells me how to run perfmon when the server is restarted, but I don't know how to make perfmon continuously run while throwing periodic files. I've tried setting it as a scheduled task that needs to be done every 10 mins, but this is too sloppy, and when the scheduled task kicks another instance, the current perfmon report writer crashes, and I get a garbage report. I've also tried writing a sloppy batch script that would fire off the task at scheduled intervals, but this is the same problem as the scheduled task. I'm sure I'm just missing something silly, but I don't see it. Ideas? (If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 locally, and I'm trying to set up the processes for boxes running Windows 2008.)

  Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

  I need my web app to restart the dansguardian service (on CentOS) so it needs to run '/sbin/service dansguardian restart' I have a shellscript in /home/topological called apacherestart.sh which does the following: #!/bin/sh id=`id` /sbin/service dansguardian restart r=$? return $r This runs ok (logger statement in script for testing output to syslog, so I know it's running) To make it run, I put this in /etc/sudoers: User_Alias APACHE=www # Cmnd alias specification Cmnd_Alias HTTPRESTART=/home/topological/apacherestart.sh,/sbin/e-smith/db,/etc/rc7.d/S91dansguardian # Defaults specification # User privilege specification root ALL=(ALL) ALL APACHE ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: HTTPRESTART So far so good. But the service does not restart. To test this I created a user david, and fudged the uid/gid in /etc/passwd to be the same as www: www:x:102:102:e-smith web server:/home/e-smith:/bin/false david:x:102:102:David:/home/e-smith/files/users/david:/bin/bash then logged in as david and tried to run the apacherestart.sh. The problem I get is: /etc/rc7.d/S91dansguardian: line 51: /sbin/e-smith/db: Permission denied even though S91dansguardian and db are in the sudoers command list. Any ideas?

• Stop a runaway launchd process on OS X Leopard

  I created a launchd .plist file to in order to have a python script run every hour. I ended up editing and later deleting the .plist file ( in /Library/LaunchDaemons )... but somehow launchd is still trying to run the script.. The file that the original .plist was calling is also no longer present ( it was in /usr/bin ).. Now every 10 seconds launchd is still attempting to run the script, fails, and respawns... I tried fixing this with Lingon.... to no avail.. Is there a way to kill this process for good? I tried logging out and restarting as well... Machine is running 10.5.8

• windows rename command to rename file.a.b to file.b

  I have a few folders with hundreds of html files. The file name should have been .htm but it is .asp.htm and it does not run. It is plain html file and there is no asp code. So, I tried to rename the files using rename command. I tried like this rename *.asp.htm *.htm But it does not work. After trying a few other combinations I believe rename or ren command can't change the double dot extension. The only change the last extension. So, if I try rename *.asp.htm *.asp.htm I thought nothing would be changed, but, the file name changes from file.asp.htm to file.asp.asp.htm I hope someone would help me with this. Another thing is, can I force apache to run files with .asp.htm extension? Currently it can't run those files. Thanks in advance.

• How to move linux executables to a ramdisk?

  i've made a ramdisk this way: mkdir -p /media/ramdisk mount -t tmpfs -o size=512M tmpfs /media/ramdisk/ The reason for this is because i run a lot of node.js scripts and their execution time is very small, but i suspect that the time overhead is because it reloads the node.js executable from disk and destroys it on each subsecuent run. So i think this might be the solution to gain a bit, if not much, performance. How can i move a program like node to the ramdisk and run it from there? The idea is to have a startup script that creates the ramdisk and puts the node files inside of it. Note that i'm currently using fedora 16 for what's it's worth. Thanks in advance.

• Running a powershell script at startup

  I am writing a script to remove a computer from the domain, rename it, then add it back. It works fine when I set the trigger to AtLogOn but when I switch to AtStartUp I run into some issues. I get this error when it restarts to run the first scheduled task: 0x8007051F: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I suspect the script tries to run with no network connection set up so I tested using the RandomDelay parameter, and it worked like its suppose to. I cant rely on a random delay so I am looking for an alternative. Is there a way to test the network status before the script begins or a way to delay the script a specific amount of time? I am using Register-ScheduledJob provided by Powershell 3.0 Thanks in advance
