  • Installing Ubuntu with Windows installer on Windows 8 machine

    I have a Windows 8 Ultrabook. I downloaded Ubuntu (release 12.04) and installed using the Windows installer (Wubi). On rebooting at the end of the installation, I get the Windows boot screen asking if I want to boot into Windows 8 or Ubuntu. I select Ubuntu, and I get an error message that says Ubuntu is missing a boot file or has errors. Please let me know how to fix, or if my procedure is incorrect.

  • Databases and Beer

    It is a bit of a no-brainer: Include the word "beer" in a subject line of an e-mail or blog post title and you can be certain that it will be read. While there are times this practice might be a ploy to increase readership, it is not the case for this blog post. There is inspiration that can be drawn from other industries to which we, as database professionals, can apply in our industry. In this post I will highlight one of my favorite participants of the brewing industry. The Boston Beer Company started in the 1970s in Boston, Massachusetts. Others may be more familiar with this company through their Samuel Adams Boston Lager and other various seasonal beers. I am continually inspired by their commitment to mastery of the brewing process to which they evangelize frequently in their commercials. They also are continually in pursuit of pushing the boundaries of beer as we know it while working within traditional constraints. A recent example of this is their collaboration with Weihenstephan Brewery of Munich, Germany to produce the soon to be released Infinium beer. This beer, while brewed as an ale, is touted as something closer to something like Champaign - all while complying with the Reinheitsgebot. The Reinheitsgebot is also known as the "German Beer Purity Law" which was originated in 1516. This law states that beer is to consist of water, barley, hops and yeast. That's it. Quite a limiting constraint indeed. and yet, The Boston Beer Company pushed forward. Much like the process of brewing, the discipline of database design and architecture is one that is continually in process and driven by the pursuit of mastery. While we do not have purity laws to constrain us, we have many other types: best practices, company policies, government regulations, security and budgets. Through our fellow comrades, we discuss the challenges and constraints in which we operate. We boil down the principles and theories that define our profession. We reassemble these into something that is complementary to the business needs that we must fulfill. As a result, it is not uncommon to see something amazingly innovative in a small business who is pushing the boundaries of their database well beyond its intended state. It is equally common to see innovation in the use of features available in the more advanced features of databases that are found in large businesses. The tag line for The Boston Beer Company is: "Take Pride In Your Beer.", I would like to offer an alternative and say "Take Pride In Your Database." So, As you pour your next Boston Lager into a frosted glass, consider those who spend their lives mastering the craft of brewing and strive to interject their spirit into everything that you do as a database professional. Some of these branches are nearing end-of-life, and I won't be updating them any more. What's the different philosophies for handling branches like this? Should they be removed, or left in the repository unmaintained? If I do, won't I end up with a cluttered repository?

    I have a HP MINI 210-1010NR and just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't get my wireless to work.I have checked through multiple Q&A's throughout this FAQ and tried them all. When I go over the wireless thing at the top it says "Wireless Networks device not ready(firmware missing)." Okay, now here is my lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) Also, when I try to open additional drivers it says that "Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status."

    I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and recently installed Appcelerator Titanium Studio version 1.7 When I load up a demo project to run, I get an error like this, Couldn't load file:/home/dananjaya/.titanium/runtime/linux/1.1.0/libkhost.so, error: /home/dananjaya/.titanium/runtime/linux/1.1.0/libwebkittitanium-1.0.so.2: file too short Am I missing some dependencies here or is it a bug in the application?   • Changing screen saver settings without completely removing gnome-screensaver and installing xscreensaver

    I am on 11.04 atm. Would like to figure out how to change the settings for screensavers without completely switching to xscreensaver. I read somewhere that it doesn't play as nicely with some of gnome's features like screen locking. I also read some guide that recommended installing xscreensaver and configuring your screen saver settings there and apparently they were supposed to be used by gnome-screensaver as well. But that did not work for me. gnome-screensaver sure sucks

    When using kubuntu I noticed that the standard task manager/system monitor was a bit more capable than gnome-system-monitor, is there a more advanced system/task monitor for ubuntu that is based on gnome opposed to KDE? Specifically the features from the Kubuntu task manager that I am looking for are the ability to control the I/O priority of individual processes (not just their nice), and the ability to control the I/O scheduling algorithm ( round-robin, FIFO, etc). What are my options?

  • I'm using OpenAL, trying to load a .ogg file and having .dll troubles

    I'm using OpenAL for my game's music, and it loads .wav files by default, but to load in Ogg files I had to download and setup a few .dlls and lib files. I have fixed all errors with dlls except for this: I need vorbis.dll, and it says it's missing vorbis_window. I just can't find the dll anywhere online that includes the vorbis_window, anyone have suggestions on how I should fix this problem with my dll?
