• Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy. • How to install (or mock) Internet Explorer?

  I need to install a Windows application, which checks if there is Internet Explorer of at least 5th version installed and refuses to install (while I believe it does not really need it to work) if it is not. I've tried winetricks to install ie 8, 7, 6 full, 6 versions it offers - none worked - versions 7 and 8 installers report a function missing in msvcr (installing all msvcr versions didn't help), ie6 report some other error (I'll specify if it matters). I've also tried IEs4Linux - it also fails, complaining for a "BadIDChoice" X Window System error received by ies4linux-gtk.py. Is there a way to install any IE version in Ubuntu 10.10 with Wine or to mock its presence? I don't even need it to work, just to be installed in the Wine system so that other Windows programs could see it's there. I use Ubuntu 10.10 with Wine 1.3.8.

I know that it will kill my free time, but I figure I can control when I'm doing projects and then get a little extra money or even eventually make it my full time job. But as I've never done this before, I'm wondering what issues people face to do this kind of work. For instance: how do you find customers? What difficulties do you normally face on a project? How do you deal with projects that are too large for one programmer to effectively complete? What about projects that need other skill sets (for instance web design for a web app?)

• Project OpenPTK Release 2.1 Available

  The OpenPTK owners are pleased to announce that release 2.1 is available.  It has been "tagged" in the svn repository. See the download page for details.   This release is an update to version 2.0.  This release contains bug fixes, enhancements to existing capabilities, and new features.  The most notable change in this release is the use of maven, instead of ant, for the build process.  The adoption of maven has made the project more modular, reduced its download size (less bundled jar files) and will enable the future support of Project OpenPTK in a maven repository. • eepc 100h ubuntu 12.04 external monitor higher resolution modes force a rotated display

  Hi I have a eeepc 1000h netbook. I've just installed ubuntu. I mainly use an external display (samsung ta350 full hd 22 inch affair) but when I select 1080 from the dropdown list, my only options are for a rotated portrait. My neck's non too supple, so tilting my head for extended periods is not really viable. :-) Any ideas on making ubuntu display 1080 normal landscape? It must surely be possible. My gparted boot cd does it perfectly. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers!

• Unable to start backuppc

  I had a ext4 drive today I replaced with a RAID drive, I moved all the files from the old HDD. After that I tried to start the Backuppc but I'm getting the following error: Can't create a test hardlink between a file in /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/pc and /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/cpool. Either these are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i, and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting... • Can desktop applications be written using javascript?

  Is it currently possible to write desktop applications using javascript, html, css? Possible solutions: Use Adobe AIR runtime and program in js. But no, if I'm using AIR, the AS3 suites it the most. So not a good option. GWT: No because it uses Java and then convert it to js or what ever. Pyjamas: Interesting. But I'm currently focusing on JavaScript. So I don't want to use python and cross-compile to js. Run a local server and use the browser in full screen mode. Sort of okay, but still its the same browser thing. And difficult to distribute. So what is the best option? I'm excited about node.js which is the main reason for looking into JavaScript. Otherwise I would have choose python.

• Queuing rpc calls

  i'm designing a system wich listen to json rpc calls from clients, piles it up inside a list, and if it gets full it should store them in a DB and keep recieving calls. My original plan is to listen to the rpc calls from Perl with the json-rpc and put them in the array. The clients do some long polling in another server to get responses as they appear. What is this blocking/noblocking thing? Should i do a script for node.js to listen to the calls? What do you think is a good practice in this case? The objective is to listen as much calls as possible.

• Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

• Open Source License that prevents re-selling

  I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

• Half the time Linux drop into BusyBox; the rest of the time the boot happens normally

  I just installed Ubuntu x64 onto a USB3 Drive from a DVD, and half the time it appears to skip the grub menu and boots directly into BusyBox. Since the USB3 drive is an SSD, I ran through the full installation (installing on an ext4 partition, along side a 1GB boot partition at the start of the disk), skipping the swap partition. Part of the time that the Grub Menu does shows, it boots into BusyBox with an error: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uid] does not exist. Dropping to a shell! What could cause such an issue?

• How can I get a 1920x1080 resolution?

  I a newbie Linux and have just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows 7. I love the interface of Ubuntu but unfortunately I can only get a 800x600 or 1024x728 resolution with black bars all around the screen. I have an nVidia GTX 570 graphics card and an Asus 1080p 23" monitor. What may be of note is that I had to use the nomodeset command on installation of the boot would get stuck at a line with "nouveau", which I understand is to do with the drivers. Additionally, when I type in xrandr to the terminal, it comes up with the error message "failed to get size of gamma for output default". I guess what I am looking for here is someone who could explain to me really simply the steps I have to take to get a full 1080p resolution, at which point I am sure i will become a great fan of the OS! I think i want to convert to a free app now, and allow full upgrade via in-app-purchase. The problem is, I don't want to make my existing customers buy the app again to use it, nor do I want to make it easy for hackers to just flip a switch and get the pro version.
