  • Multithreading improvements in .NET 4

    - by Artiom Chilaru
I have heard that the .NET 4 team has added new classes in the framework that make working with threads better and easier. Basically the question is what are the new ways to run multithreaded tasks added in .NET 4 and what are they designed to be used for? UPD: Just to make it clear, I'm not looking for a single way of running parallel tasks in .NET 4, I want to find out which are the new ones added, and if possible what situation would each of them be best suited for..

  • How to configure maximum number of transport channels in WCF using basicHttpBinding?

    - by Hemant
Consider following code which is essentially a WCF host: [ServiceContract (Namespace = "http://www.mightycalc.com")] interface ICalculator { [OperationContract] int Add (int aNum1, int aNum2); } [ServiceBehavior (InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerCall)] class Calculator: ICalculator { public int Add (int aNum1, int aNum2) { Thread.Sleep (2000); //Simulate a lengthy operation return aNum1 + aNum2; } } class Program { static void Main (string[] args) { try { using (var serviceHost = new ServiceHost (typeof (Calculator))) { var httpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding (BasicHttpSecurityMode.None); serviceHost.AddServiceEndpoint (typeof (ICalculator), httpBinding, "http://172.16.9.191:2221/calc"); serviceHost.Open (); Console.WriteLine ("Service is running. ENJOY!!!"); Console.WriteLine ("Type 'stop' and hit enter to stop the service."); Console.ReadLine (); if (serviceHost.State == CommunicationState.Opened) serviceHost.Close (); } } catch (Exception e) { Console.WriteLine (e); Console.ReadLine (); } } } Also the WCF client program is: class Program { static int COUNT = 0; static Timer timer = null; static void Main (string[] args) { var threads = new Thread[10]; for (int i = 0; i < threads.Length; i++) { threads[i] = new Thread (Calculate); threads[i].Start (null); } timer = new Timer (o => Console.WriteLine ("Count: {0}", COUNT), null, 1000, 1000); Console.ReadLine (); timer.Dispose (); } static void Calculate (object state) { var c = new CalculatorClient ("BasicHttpBinding_ICalculator"); c.Open (); while (true) { try { var sum = c.Add (2, 3); Interlocked.Increment (ref COUNT); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine ("Error on thread {0}: {1}", Thread.CurrentThread.Name, ex.GetType ()); break; } } c.Close (); } } Basically, I am creating 10 proxy clients and then repeatedly calling Add service method. Now if I run both applications and observe opened TCP connections using netstat, I find that: If both client and server are running on same machine, number of tcp connections are equal to number of proxy objects. It means all requests are being served in parallel. Which is good. If I run server on a separate machine, I observed that maximum 2 TCP connections are opened regardless of the number of proxy objects I create. Only 2 requests run in parallel. It hurts the processing speed badly. If I switch to net.tcp binding, everything works fine (a separate TCP connection for each proxy object even if they are running on different machines). I am very confused and unable to make the basicHttpBinding use more TCP connections. I know it is a long question, but please help!

  • Benefit of using multiple SIMD instruction sets simultaneously

    - by GenTiradentes
I'm writing a highly parallel application that's multithreaded. I've already got an SSE accelerated thread class written. If I were to write an MMX accelerated thread class, then run both at the same time (one SSE thread and one MMX thread per core) would the performance improve noticeably? I would think that this setup would help hide memory latency, but I'd like to be sure before I start pouring time into it.

  • Problems doing asynch operations in C# using Mutex.

    - by firoso
    I've tried this MANY ways, here is the current iteration. I think I've just implemented this all wrong. What I'm trying to accomplish is to treat this Asynch result in such a way that until it returns AND I finish with my add-thumbnail call, I will not request another call to imageProvider.BeginGetImage. To Clarify, my question is two-fold. Why does what I'm doing never seem to halt at my Mutex.WaitOne() call, and what is the proper way to handle this scenario? /// <summary> /// re-creates a list of thumbnails from a list of TreeElementViewModels (directories) /// </summary> /// <param name="list">the list of TreeElementViewModels to process</param> public void BeginLayout(List<AiTreeElementViewModel> list) { // *removed code for canceling and cleanup from previous calls* // Starts the processing of all folders in parallel. Task.Factory.StartNew(() => { thumbnailRequests = Parallel.ForEach<AiTreeElementViewModel>(list, options, ProcessFolder); }); } /// <summary> /// Processes a folder for all of it's image paths and loads them from disk. /// </summary> /// <param name="element">the tree element to process</param> private void ProcessFolder(AiTreeElementViewModel element) { try { var images = ImageCrawler.GetImagePaths(element.Path); AsyncCallback callback = AddThumbnail; foreach (var image in images) { Console.WriteLine("Attempting Enter"); synchMutex.WaitOne(); Console.WriteLine("Entered"); var result = imageProvider.BeginGetImage(callback, image); } } catch (Exception exc) { Console.WriteLine(exc.ToString()); // TODO: Do Something here. } } /// <summary> /// Adds a thumbnail to the Browser /// </summary> /// <param name="result">an async result used for retrieving state data from the load task.</param> private void AddThumbnail(IAsyncResult result) { lock (Thumbnails) { try { Stream image = imageProvider.EndGetImage(result); string filename = imageProvider.GetImageName(result); string imagePath = imageProvider.GetImagePath(result); var imageviewmodel = new AiImageThumbnailViewModel(image, filename, imagePath); thumbnailHash[imagePath] = imageviewmodel; HostInvoke(() => Thumbnails.Add(imageviewmodel)); UpdateChildZoom(); //synchMutex.ReleaseMutex(); Console.WriteLine("Exited"); } catch (Exception exc) { Console.WriteLine(exc.ToString()); // TODO: Do Something here. } } }

  • Connection Refused running multiple environments on Selenium Grid 1.04 via Ubuntu 9.04

    - by ReadyWater
Hello, I'm writing a selenium grid test suite which is going to be run on a series of different machines. I wrote most of it on my macbook but have recently transfered it over to my work machine, which is running ubuntu 9.04. That's actually my first experience with a linux machine, so I may be missing something very simple (I have disabled the firewall though). I haven't been able to get the multienvironment thing working at all, and I've been trying and manual reviewing for a while. Any recommendations and help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! The error I'm getting when I run the test is: [java] FAILED CONFIGURATION: @BeforeMethod startFirstEnvironment("localhost", 4444, "*safari", "http://remoteURL:8080/tutor") [java] java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not start Selenium session: ERROR: Connection refused I thought it might be the mac refusing the connection, but using wireshark I determined that no connection attempt was made on the mac . Here's the code for setting up the session, which is where it seems to be dying @BeforeMethod(groups = {"default", "example"}, alwaysRun = true) @Parameters({"seleniumHost", "seleniumPort", "firstEnvironment", "webSite"}) protected void startFirstEnvironment(String seleniumHost, int seleniumPort, String firstEnvironment, String webSite) throws Exception { try{ startSeleniumSession(seleniumHost, seleniumPort, firstEnvironment, webSite); session().setTimeout(TIMEOUT); } finally { closeSeleniumSession(); } } @BeforeMethod(groups = {"default", "example"}, alwaysRun = true) @Parameters({"seleniumHost", "seleniumPort", "secondEnvironment", "webSite"}) protected void startSecondEnvironment(String seleniumHost, int seleniumPort, String secondEnvironment, String webSite) throws Exception { try{ startSeleniumSession(seleniumHost, seleniumPort, secondEnvironment, webSite); session().setTimeout(TIMEOUT); } finally { closeSeleniumSession(); } } and the accompanying build script used to run the test <target name="runMulti" depends="compile" description="Run Selenium tests in parallel (20 threads)"> <echo>${seleniumHost}</echo> <java classpathref="runtime.classpath" classname="org.testng.TestNG" failonerror="true"> <sysproperty key="java.security.policy" file="${rootdir}/lib/testng.policy"/> <sysproperty key="webSite" value="${webSite}" /> <sysproperty key="seleniumHost" value="${seleniumHost}" /> <sysproperty key="seleniumPort" value="${seleniumPort}" /> <sysproperty key="firstEnvironment" value="${firstEnvironment}" /> <sysproperty key="secondEnvironment" value="${secondEnvironment}" /> <arg value="-d" /> <arg value="${basedir}/target/reports" /> <arg value="-suitename" /> <arg value="Selenium Grid Java Sample Test Suite" /> <arg value="-parallel"/> <arg value="methods"/> <arg value="-threadcount"/> <arg value="15"/> <arg value="testng.xml"/> </java>

  • Unexpected behavior of IntentService

    - by kknight
I used IntentService in my code instead of Service because IntentService creates a thread for me in onHandleIntent(Intent intent), so I don't have to create a Thead myself in the code of my service. I expected that two intents to the same IntentSerivce will execute in parallel because a thread is generated in IntentService for each invent. But my code turned out that the two intents executed in sequential way. This is my IntentService code: public class UpdateService extends IntentService { public static final String TAG = "HelloTestIntentService"; public UpdateService() { super("News UpdateService"); } protected void onHandleIntent(Intent intent) { String userAction = intent .getStringExtra("userAction"); Log.v(TAG, "" + new Date() + ", In onHandleIntent for userAction = " + userAction + ", thread id = " + Thread.currentThread().getId()); if ("1".equals(userAction)) { try { Thread.sleep(20 * 1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { Log.e(TAG, "error", e); } Log.v(TAG, "" + new Date() + ", This thread is waked up."); } } } And the code call the service is below: public class HelloTest extends Activity { //@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); Intent selectIntent = new Intent(this, UpdateService.class); selectIntent.putExtra("userAction", "1"); this.startService(selectIntent); selectIntent = new Intent(this, UpdateService.class); selectIntent.putExtra("userAction", "2"); this.startService(selectIntent); } } I saw this log message in the log: V/HelloTestIntentService( 848): Wed May 05 14:59:37 PDT 2010, In onHandleIntent for userAction = 1, thread id = 8 D/dalvikvm( 609): GC freed 941 objects / 55672 bytes in 99ms V/HelloTestIntentService( 848): Wed May 05 15:00:00 PDT 2010, This thread is waked up. V/HelloTestIntentService( 848): Wed May 05 15:00:00 PDT 2010, In onHandleIntent for userAction = 2, thread id = 8 I/ActivityManager( 568): Stopping service: com.example.android/.UpdateService The log shows that the second intent waited the first intent to finish and they are in the same thread. It there anything I misunderstood of IntentService. To make two service intents execute in parallel, do I have to replace IntentService with service and start a thread myself in the service code? Thanks.

  • ErrorException [ Fatal Error ]: Class 'Controller' not found - Kohana 3.0.3 Error

    - by Asif
Hi, I am (newbie) using Kohana V 3.0.3 and my directory structure is: pojectsys (kohana's system directory) parallel to htdocs directory C:\xampp\pojectsys and my application directory is in htdocs C:\xampp\htdocs\examples Inside C:\xampp\htdocs\examples\index.php, following variables have been set: $application = 'C:\xampp\htdocs\examples\application'; $system = 'C:\xampp\pojectsys'; Now when I am trying to execute http://lc.examples.com/ then Kohana returns error: ErrorException [ Fatal Error ]: Class 'Controller' not found for line 3 class Controller_Welcome extends Controller { Please help me to resolve this issue.

  • Continuation - Viewing FIRST_ROWS before query completes.

    - by Frank Developer
I have identified the query constructs my users normally use. would it make sense for me to create composite indexes to support those constructs and provide FIRST_ROWS capability? If I migrate from SE to IDS, I will loose the ability to write low-level functions with c-isam calls, but gain FIRST_ROWS along with other goodies like: SET-READS for index scans (onconfig USE_[KO]BATCHEDREAD), optimizer directives, parallel queries, etc?

  • How can I build multiple processes with TBB?

    - by Jackie
Now I plan to parallelize my sequential solver. I hope I could run several copies of my solver(maybe with different parameters) in parallel simultaneously on a multi-core computer. can I do this with TBB? The reason I ask this question is that the book says: do not introduce anything in your code that will not allow single-thread execution. Any experts can explain this issue? Thanks.

  • links to work items - vstf/vsts

    - by damwas
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to create links to work items that open not through Team System Web Access but through Visual Studio 2008. For TSWA we have following links: http://mytfs:8090/wi.aspx?id=1234 We would like to include VS-links in the reports (in parallel with TSWA-links), so that users can choose the tool they want to use. Thanks, Damian

  • HttpServletRequest.getServerName() occasionally returning null in concurrent use?

    - by oconnor0
Under JBoss 4.0.1SP1, I have a servlet that makes multiple, concurrent calls to web services that are running under the same instance. I'm using request.getServerName() (on HttpServletRequest) to construct the endpoint URL. This normally works fine, but every once in a while returns null. I hadn't seen this before running the web service requests in parallel, and so I guessed that sharing the HttpServletRequest among threads won't always work or something. Any ideas on fixing this?

  • What kind of data processing problems would CUDA help with?

    - by Chris McCauley
Hi, I've worked on many data matching problems and very often they boil down to quickly and in parallel running many implementations of CPU intensive algorithms such as Hamming / Edit distance. Is this the kind of thing that CUDA would be useful for? What kinds of data processing problems have you solved with it? Is there really an uplift over the standard quad-core intel desktop? Chris

  • Using a visual tool to view changes on git repository

    - by Phuong Nguy?n
I'm coming to an existing project in which people used git to track everything from scratch. I want to have a tool to view the differences between several commits. gitk does a good job, but talking about human readability, it's does not facilitate me much. Is there a better solution? I'm looking for a set of tools that allow me to easily compare branches (some how like winmerge - Display two version in parallel and highlight the changes), and running on Mac.

  • What is the "opposite" of request serialization called?

    - by Adam Lindberg
For example, if a request is made to a resource and another identical request is made before the first has returned a result, the server returns the result of the first request for the second request as well. This to avoid unnecessary processing on the resource. This is not the same thing as caching/memoization since it only concerns identical requests ongoing in parallel. Is there a term for the reuse of results for currently ongoing requests to a resource for the purpose of minimizing processing?

  • Python Macros: Use Cases?

    - by Rick Copeland
If Python had a macro facility similar to Lisp/Scheme (something like MetaPython), how would you use it? If you are a Lisp/Scheme programmer, what sorts of things do you use macros for (other than things that have a clear syntactic parallel in Python such as a while loop)?

  • How many copies of files are needed by video server?

    - by Trilok
A quick question. How many copies of the same movie are kept in a video server (a video streaming server)? Suppose a particular video is at max requested by 1000 users at the same instant of time, how many copies would be sufficient so that parallel streams can be provided to each user? Ideally 1 copy would solve the purpose, but what is the optimum number keeping the bandwidth and simultaneous access in mind?

  • Job queue manager with RPC interface

    - by admr
I need a job queue manager that I can control over the Internet. It should be able to execute and stop processes, check on their status (ideally notice and execute some code when a process exits), respond to commands and also be able to report back to a server. Background: I have a GWT application that allows to create jobs to execute on a cloud instance (currently EC2). I want to push a "job packet" (data for a process to operate on etc) to S3, start a Linux EC2 instance (or use one that's already running), and tell a job manager on the instance to execute that job (possibly parallel to other jobs). It should then pull the "job packet" from S3, run a process that operates on that data and report back to the server that is running the server part of my GWT application with some information (e.g. exit code, stdout, stderr). If I have to write e.g. stdour/err to a file from the process and read that file, that's OK too. I would really like the manager to be "close" to the processes it runs, meaning I want to avoid using something like Runtime.exec from the JDK. It seems like I would have to do that if I used Quartz for example. I'm fine with the calls in both directions being asynchronous. I'm fine with any reasonable technology for the calls as long as I can easily build an interface for that in my GWT server side (e.g. HTTP requests to a servlet over SSL would be nice and trivial). The job manager does not need to have a very sophisticated queueing system. Running several processes either sequentially or in parallel should be fine. Determining how much compute time a process received during its lifetime would be nice (AFAIK, this might be challenging). I did not yet find any existing software that does this, including http://java-source.net/open-source/job-schedulers. I suspect I might have to build an RPC interface (with authentication etc, of course) around a job manager; maybe use something like Apache Commons Exec. In that case, I would prefer Java or Python for the job manager part. I would be happy to hear suggestions for either the former or latter scenario!

  • Threading cost - minimum execution time when threads would add speed

    - by Lukas
I am working on a C# application that works with an array. It walks through it (meaning that at one time only a narrow part of the array is used). I am considering adding threads in it to make it perform faster (it runs on a dualcore computer). The problem is that I do not know if it would actually help, because threads cost something and this cost could easily be more than the parallel gain... So how do I determine if threading would help?
