• Using a saved password for remote desktop access from Windows 7

  This past week I have been accessing a remote server by remote desktop access from a Windows 7 PC. Whilst I could save the password, windows 7 will not use it if the remote system is not fully verified. The fix is excellently documented at http://www.perceptible.net/post/2009/02/03/How-To-Enable-Use-of-Saved-Credentials-with-Remote-Desktop-to-Almost-Fully-Authenticated-Machines.aspx I used it and the connection process stopped asking for the password to be re-entered! (n.b. no gpedit -force is required)

• What are the recommended minimum payment options on an e-commerce site?

  I've recently released a site that presently integrates with PayPal for taking payments, this doesn't require you to hold a PayPal account as you can submit credit cards through the PayPal checkout without having to sign-up etc. But what other options would you say were recommended or perhaps even required to ensure you capture as many potential customers as possible? • How to refactor a method which breaks "The law of Demeter" principle?

  I often find myself breaking this principle (not intentially, just through bad design). However recently I've seen a bit of code that I'm not sure of the best approach. I have a number of classes. For simplicity I've taken out the bulk of the classes methods etc public class Paddock { public SoilType Soil { get; private set; } // a whole bunch of other properties around paddock information } public class SoilType { public SoilDrainageType Drainage { get; private set; } // a whole bunch of other properties around soil types } public class SoilDrainageType { // a whole bunch of public properties that expose soil drainage values public double GetProportionOfDrainage(SoilType soil, double blockRatio) { // This method does a number of calculations using public properties // exposed off SoilType as well as the blockRatio value in some conditions } } In the code I have seen in a number of places calls like so paddock.Soil.Drainage.GetProportionOfDrainage(paddock.Soil, paddock.GetBlockRatio()); or within the block object itself in places it's Soil.Drainage.GetProportionOfDrainage(this.Soil, this.GetBlockRatio()); Upon reading this seems to break "The Law of Demeter" in that I'm chaining together these properties to access the method I want. So my thought in order to adjust this was to create public methods on SoilType and Paddock that contains wrappers i.e. on paddock it would be public class Paddock { public double GetProportionOfDrainage() { return Soil.GetProportionOfDrainage(this.GetBlockRatio()); } } on the SoilType it would be public class SoilType { public double GetProportionOfDrainage(double blockRatio) { return Drainage.GetProportionOfDrainage(this, blockRatio); } } so now calls where it used would be simply // used outside of paddock class where we can access instances of Paddock paddock.GetProportionofDrainage() or this.GetProportionOfDrainage(); // if used within Paddock class This seemed like a nice alternative. However now I have a concern over how would I enforce this usage and stop anyone else from writing code such as paddock.Soil.Drainage.GetProportionOfDrainage(paddock.Soil, paddock.GetBlockRatio()); rather than just paddock.GetProportionOfDrainage(); I need the properties to remain public at this stage as they are too ingrained in usage throughout the code block. However I don't really want a mixture of accessing the method on DrainageType directly as that seems to defeat the purpose altogether. What would be the appropiate design approach in this situation? I can provide more information as required to better help in answers. Is my thoughts on refactoring this even appropiate or should is it best to leave it as is and use the property chaining to access the method as and when required?

• Cannot install "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" (SystemError)

  I have just installed a fresh copy of 12.04.1 64bit. I formatted my PC completely and enabled updates during the installation. After the installation was complete, I went on updating my software. However, when I wanted to install the additional drivers using the Additional Drivers tool (namely "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver"), it gave me this error: SystemError: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. The same error shows up if I try installing the post-release updates driver. Installing the drivers from the terminal results in this output: XXXXXX:~$ sudo apt-get install fglrx [sudo] password for XXXXX: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: fglrx : Depends: lib32gcc1 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libc6-i386 but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." I get this using "sudo apt-get update": http://pastebin.com/AWAtDXjY But "sudo apt-get install fglrx" still get me this error: http://pastebin.com/RYM55bVN & "sudo apt-get -f install fglrx" gives me this error: http://pastebin.com/xxekajvP Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Please note that I'm new to Linux, coming directly from Windows. I have tried Ubuntu twice or so before, but it was not for a long period of time. The drivers got installed smoothly the few times I've tried Ubuntu, but post-release updates never worked for me.) [I am going to work now, so I can only answer from my phone. Can't really test any new solutions you may give me until ~10 hours from now on. • Event sourcing and persistence

  I'm reading up on event sourcing and have a question regarding persistence. I can still have a DB with all entities, right? Or should the events be replayed every time the application is started to get the latest version of each entity in the memory? Seems like a waste on larger systems (as in large amount of data)? The point with event sourcing is that I can can replay the events to populate a data store if required? (or analyze the data)

  I found that if I build any binary on Ubuntu 10.10, then it doesn't execute on some older Linuxes. It is because Ubuntu uses a very new C library, called EGLIBC. Most of the desktop Linux systems use GLIBC. I would like to know whether there is any standard method how to redistribute binary programs built on a modern Ubuntu so that they can be executed on any older Linux system ? How to find all required dependencies (glibc version, dynamic libraries) ?

  I am trying to run parser from here, but it gives this error: This program requires jinja2 version 2.7 or later I have already installed the jinja2 package by running sudo apt-get install python-jinja2. • How do I reset a lost administrative password?

• From 20,663 issues to 1 issue&ndash;style-copping C5.Tests

The tools I used were the latest versions of: My 64-bit development PC running Windows 8 Update with 8Gb RAM Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate with SP2 ReSharper GhostDoc Pro My first attempt had to be abandoned due to collision of class names which broke one of the unit tests. So being aware of this duplication of class names, I started again and planned to prepend the class names with the namespace name. In some cases I additionally prepended the item of the C5 collection that was being tested. So what was the condition of code at the start? Besides the sprawl of C# code not written to style cop standard, there was: 1) Placing of many classes within one physical file. 2) Namespace within name space that did not follow the project structure. 3) As already mentioned, duplication of class names across namespaces. 4) A copyright notice that spawled but had to be preserved. 5) Project sub-folders were all lower case instead of initial letter capitalised. The first step was to add a stylecop heading plus the original heading contained within a region, to every file. The next step was to run GhostDoc Pro using its “Document File” option on every file but not letting it replace the headers, I had added. This brought the number of issues down to 18,192. I then went through each file collapsing each class and prepending names as appropriate. At each step, I saved the changes to my local Git. The step was to move each class to its own file and to style-cop each file. ReSharper provides a very useful feature for doing this which also fixes missing “this.” and moves using statements inside the namespace. Some classes required minimal work whereas others required extensive work to reach the stylecop standard. The unit tests were run at each split and when each class was completed. When all was done, one issue remained which I will need to submit to stylecop team for their advice (and possibly a fix to stylecop). The updated solution has been made available at https://c5stylecopped.codeplex.com/releases/view/122785.
