  • How do I get windows 7 to go full screen in boot camp?

    I'm running Windows 7 on an iMac using Bootcamp. At the native resolution of 1290x1200, the desktop fills the entire screen, but when I run games at a lower resolution or reduce the suze of the desktop the visible area is reduced and a large black border surrounds the display. I want to run 1024x768 full screen, not letterboxed. Is there a way to do this? I suspect a problem with the drivers.

    I've been testing native vhd boot on several servers, and it seems to be pretty transparent and none of my seat of the pants testing has notice any difference in performance. I have a bunch of servers to roll out that will have the following features/roles dfsr dhcp iis application server dc <- haven't tested this yet but see no reason why it won't work. any opinions/ideas on this?

  • Converting SVG to UFO files

    I am working in PhotoImpact X3, whose native file format is .UFO. I want to bring an SVG file into it, but it doesn't recognize SVG format. All online converters I find (trying to convert it to .PSD, which PhotoImpact X3 recognizes) convert the SVG to a raster format, first, and I don't want that. Does anyone know a way to import an SVG file into PhotoImpact X3? Preferably as a .UFO or .PSD file, but any scaleable vector file format will work.

  • How to install Dvorak Type 2 (ii) German on Ubuntu using Gnome

    Currently I am using standard Dvorak on Ubuntu 13.10 and Gnome 3.10. Unfortunately, writing Umlauts (ä,ö,ü) in German requires me to switch to QWERTY/QWERTZ frequently or forces me to not write those umlauts (which looks strange to German native speakers). Is there a way to use Dvorak Type 2, including the umlauts, but otherwise using the standard English layout on Ubuntu with Gnome? I'm a fast typer on standard English Dvorak and would like to avoid fully switching to German Dvorak as this would (at least temporarily) reduce my typing speed.

  • Possible to disable smart card PIN change in Windows 7?

    I'm looking for a way to disable the smart card PIN change ability provided with Windows 7's native minidriver. It doesn't allow us to enforce any PIN complexity requirements such that users could change their PIN to 000000 or blank without any issues so we'd like to disable that ability. I've been googling around and haven't found any way to do this, but perhaps someone has encountered a similar issue and found a resolution? A third party minidriver is the next step, but if we could do it without additional tools I'm all for it.

  • Will Windows XP work on a Hybrid Hard Drive?

    I'm looking into getting the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive, and I'm planning on dual booting between Windows 7 and Windows XP. I know 7 and Vista have native support for taking advantage of the SSD portion of a hybrid drive, and I assume XP does not have any such support, but will XP still work on the drive? I would think it will, but I wanted to be sure, and the Googles are coming up empty for me on this one. Thanks!

  • How to use two external monitors on Alienware m17x along with laptop monitor (total 3 monitors)

    I'd like to use the native 1920x1200 laptop monitor that comes with the Alienware m17x along with 2 additional external monitors, one through the displayport and another through the hdmi port. Is there any way to do this? And if so how? I've tried to update the nvidia drivers, I've installed ultramon, etc., but I can't seem to make it happen. I've seen posts that suggest it's possible, but I can't seem to figure out how.

  • Partial sync of Mysql databases on two remote computers

    Does mysql replication supports delayed sync if remote slave server is OFF? For example I want to make my developing server have a fresh copy of databases each morning. It should be partial sync, not full copy of databases each morning. And synchronization should be only ONE way, not duplex, to avoid deleting something of master server. What utilities are out there or native functionality of mysql itself? Thanks!

  • WSUS is not using Akamai CDN for syncronisation source

    I've just installed a WSUS onto our network, and I'm currently doing the initial sync. I've found that WSUS does not seem to be talking to an Akamai cache, but rather with MS directly. This is contrary to what I've always thought regarding Windows Update traffic. Tcpdump of our WSUS server doing initial sync... As you can see it's speaking with 65.55.194.221. For me to speak to this IP, I have to go over international transit links. We'll be looking to join an IX shortly with the hopes of peering with an Akamai cache and have very fast access to Windows Updates. Before I let this drive my motivations for an IX at all I want to first confirm it's actually possible for WSUS to speak with an Akamai cache. I know this is somewhat networking related, but I feel like it has more to do with WSUS than anything, so someone who knows WSUS better than me will likely be able to figure this out.

    Around here the clusters (not hyper-v clusters) are typically configured as n+1, so they are asking me to create a n+1 hyper-v r2 clusters. These will configured with both csv's and live migration and managed via scvmm r2. My thinking is that its a waste in having a node sitting there idle. In my opinion it would be better to have headroom left over for what would traditionally the +1 server spread amongst the N nodes. Anybody have an opinion on this. thanks

  • How should I use LVM with Ganeti?

    I am building a small Ganeti cluster on some low end hardware (I only have the resources given sadly). I am confused as to the use of LVMs with DRBD. I have two instances and three nodes. What I want is instance1 replicated between node 1 & 2, and instance2 replicated between nodes 3 & 2 (so node2 is doing nothing, except waiting for either node1 or 3 to fail, is it is the secondary node for both instances). This is because node2 is a lower hardware spec than 1 and 3, so I just want it as an hot-spare. How can I achieve this? I don't want instance1 being replicated to node3 for example, nor instance2 replicated to node1. Nodes 1 & 2 have /dev/sda5 which is 150GBs (for example). Nodes 2 & 3 have /dev/sda6 which is also 75GBs (for example). Using just nodes 1 & 2, after looking at the Ganeti docs I would; vgcreate my-vg Next I would create the cluster via gnt-cluster VG = "my-vg". It is here I believe that I am missing some knowledge. I believe that what I need to do is create the same Logical Volume on nodes 1 & 2 in Volume Group "my-vg", that solely consists of /dev/sda5 and call it "lv1". Then create an Logical Volume on nodes 2 & 3 the solely consists of /dev/sda6 in "my-vg" that is called "lv2". When creating instance1 I would then use "-vg=lv1 -n node1:node2", and when creating instance2 I would use "-vg=lv2 -n node3:node2". I breifly had a go at this today and I'm dubious if this will be possible. When trying to create instance2, "lv2" wont exist on node1 (the cluster master) so I don't believe it will allow the instance creation. Could I create a 1kb parition (/dev/sda6) on node1 and put it into a LV called "lv2" or is that too flakey? Is this set up possible? Thank you.

    I am currently running 4 cassandra nodes with the following hardware in a Apache Cassandra cluster: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 8G RAM 750G hard disk It shows not such a good writing performance and a really bad read performance with sometimes also timeouts. I was wondering if it makes sense to add 2 nodes with a different hardware (8 CPUs and more RAM) to improve this. Or does a cassandra cluster works best with the same hardware in every node?   • Dell PowerEdge R720 - Corrupted RAID

    Apologies in advance for the lengthy question. We have a Dell PowerEdge R720 server with: 2 x 136GB SAS drives in RAID 1 for the OS (Ubuntu Server 12.04) 6 x 3TB SATA drives in RAID 5 for data A few days ago we were getting errors when trying to access files on the large RAID 5 partition. We rebooted the server and got a message about the raid controller has found a foriegn config. We've had this before, and just needed to use Dell's RAID configuration utility to import foreign config on the RAID. Last time this worked, but this time, it started doing a disk check then we got this: FSCK has returned the following: "/dev/sdb1 inode 364738 has a bad extended attribute block 7 /dev/sdb1 unexpected inconsistency run fsck manually (i.e without -a or -p options) MOUNTALL fsck /ourdatapartition [1019] terminated with status 4 MOUNTALL filesystem has errors /ourdatapartition errors where found while checking the disk drive for /ourdatapartition Press F to fix errors, I to Ignore or M for Manual Recovery" We pressed F to try and fix the errors, but it eventually errored with: Inode 275841084, i_blocks is 167080, should be 0. Fix? yes Inode 275841141 has an invalid extend node (blk 2206761006, lblk 0) Clear? yes Inode 275841141, i_blocks is 227872, should be 0. Fix? yes Inode 275842303 has an invalid extend node (blk 2206760975, lblk 0) Clear? yes .... Error storing directory block information (inode=275906766, block=0, num=2699516178): Memory allocation failed /dev/sdb1: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** e2fsck: aborted /dev/sdb1: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** mountall: fsck /ourdatapartition [1286] terminated with status 9 mountall: Unrecoverable fsck error: /ourdatapartition We noticed one of the drive lights was not lit at all, and thought this may have failed and be the problem. We replaced the drive with a spare, and tried "F" to repair it again, but we keep just getting the same error as above. In the RAID configuration utility, all drives show as "online" and "optimal". We do have this data on another replicated server, so we're not worried about "recovering" anything, we just want to get the system back online asap. The server has 64 or 32GB memory, can't remember off the top of my head, but either way, with a 14TB RAID, I think it may still not be enough.   • Thinkpad speaker turns mute - Linux Codec issue?

    At some point a few days ago the speakers on my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 (Model number: 2537A11) suddenly stopped working randomly. This error happens every time I watch a video or listen to a music file. The sound just abruptly stops. At the moment, I can't produce a single sound no matter what I do. I am using Debian GNU/Linux on this laptop and there doesn't appear to be anything else wrong (the fan is working, no abnormal heat (staying around ~40°C), no other obvious errors or problems). I tested different setups, including OSS, ALSA and the pulseaudio server on top If i use my new usb-headphones i can hear sound all the time without any sudden silences. So obviously, although hard to believe, my laptop speakers are not okay (never heard of similar cases). I'll award the bounty to anyone who can point me to good tutorials or the procedure how to exchange my T410 speakers (i still have warranty. The laptop was bought in Germany, but now i am in Denmark). Or to someone who can explain me the output from hda-analyzer (big log above).

  • Different DPI on MacBook Pro and external monitors - what options are there?

    I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, the two screens have different DPIs. Ideally I would like them to be the same, but as this is not the case, the best option I can see is reducing the resolution of the MBP screen to bring its DPI as close as possible to the external monitor. This introduces scaling artefacts on the screen, as LCDs don't look good at non-native resolutions. Is there a standard or best way of handling this, and if not, what other options are available?
