  • TypeScript or JavaScript for noob web developer [closed]

    Following the recent release by Microsoft of TypeScript I was wondering if this is something that should be considered for a experienced WinForm and XAML developer looking to get into more web development. From reviewing a number of sites and videos online it appears that the type system for TypeScript makes more sense to me as a thick client developer than the dynamic type system in Javascript. I understand that Typescript compiles down to JavaScript but it appears that the learning curve is shallower due to the current tooling provided by Microsoft. What are your thoughts?

  • Which datagrid to use for ASP.NET MVC2 project?

    Hi, I am developing a commercial MVC2 app that requires a grid that has callback update in some form to support 10,000+ rows. It should also support relatively rich content (icons, multiline descriptions etc). Although it requires the usual paging/scrolling/sorting features it does not need support for grouping. So nothing that special. The commercial grids I looked at were Component Art (http://www.componentart.com/products/aspnetmvc/datagrid/) and Telerik (http://www.telerik.com/products/aspnet-mvc/grid.aspx) which both look pretty good but may be a little OTT for what I need. They are also $800 and $999 respectively (1 developer). I've also looked at jqGrid (http://www.trirand.net/download.aspx) and the grid from MvcContrib. These appear ok but for a commercial app I am concerned that these may be risky options - though could be wrong there. I'd really appreciate any views/exprience on either the above grids or perhaps you can suggest a better option/approach. FYI I am using EF4 and C#. Cheers

  • How to use NInject (or other DI / IoC container) with the model binder in ASP.NET MVC 2 ?

    Let's say I have an User entity and I would want to set it's CreationTime property in the constructor to DateTime.Now. But being a unit test adopter I don't want to access DateTime.Now directly but use an ITimeProvider : public class User { public User(ITimeProvider timeProvider) { // ... this.CreationTime = timeProvider.Now; } // ..... } public interface ITimeProvider { public DateTime Now { get; } } public class TimeProvider : ITimeProvider { public DateTime Now { get { return DateTime.Now; } } } I am using NInject 2 in my ASP.NET MVC 2.0 application. I have a UserController and two Create methods (one for GET and one for POST). The one for GET is straight forward but the one for POST is not so straight and not so forward :P because I need to mess with the model binder to tell it to get a reference of an implementation of ITimeProvider in order to be able to construct an user instance. public class UserController : Controller { [HttpGet] public ViewResult Create() { return View(); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(User user) { // ... } } I would also like to be able to keep all the features of the default model binder. Any chance to solve this simple/elegant/etc? :D

  • File extensions and MIME Types in .NET

    I want to get a MIME Content-Type from a given extension (preferably without accessing the physical file). I have seen some questions about this and the methods described to perform this can be resumed in: Use registry information. Use urlmon.dll's FindMimeFromData. Use IIS information. Roll your own MIME mapping function. Based on this table, for example. I've been using no.1 for some time but I realized that the information provided by the registry is not consistent and depends on the software installed on the machine. Some extensions, like .zip don't use to have a Content-Type specified. Solution no.2 forces me to have the file on disk in order to read the first bytes, which is something slow but may get good results. The third method is based on Directory Services and all that stuff, which is something I don't like much because I have to add COM references and I'm not sure it's consistent between IIS6 and IIS7. Also, I don't know the performance of this method. Finally, I didn't want to use my own table but at the end seems the best option if I want a decent performance and consistency of the results between platforms (even Mono). Do you think there's a better option than using my own table or one of other described methods are better? What's your experience?

  • What would cause ANY .NET application to crash immediately... except a project I create and Debug in

    My software recently got deployed to a customer who said that the application was crashing immediately after it started. After some initial debugging, the customer provided me remote access to one of the computers which was unable to run the application. I found that the crash wasn't specific to my application. Any application which depended on the .NET framework crashed immediately. Conveniently, Visual Studio 2008 was installed so I created a quick hello world application on it and clicked Debug. The application worked fine. But, then when I tried to execute the generated binaries in the /bin/Debug/HelloWorld.exe directory outside of visual studio it crashed. List of things i've tried (UPDATED): I checked that "Everyone" has Read&Execute permissions for c:\Windows. To test that the problem was with the .NET Framework (and not my application), I attempted to download Paint .NET on to the computers. The setup frontend crashed in the same manner. Performed a repair of the .NET framework as outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908077 (Boy was this fun and time consuming). No luck. Installed .NET 3.5 SP1 (before it just had .NET 3.5) Note: my application targets 2.0 so I did this more as a long shot... but i learned in the process that .NET 3.5 SP1 also updates the underlying frameworks. Ran Aaron Stebner's .NET Setup Verification Tool. This tool indicated that .NET was successfully installed. (I forget if i checked all the versions but at least 2.0 worked). Tested some mini hello world applications which were targeted for .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 and both crashed in the same way. Tried launching .NET apps via windbg cmd line. Doing this did allow me invoke my simple hello world applications. So, simple .NET hello world works when invoked by windbg or by launching via debug in visual studio... but doesn't if i try to execute it standalone. I created a dump file using WinDbg. It wasn't all that revealing to me.   • Is it possible to access ASP.NET anonymous profile for a logged in user?

    The ASP.NET membership supports anonymous users and logged in users. If you call FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, createPersistentCookie); with a true for createPersistentCookie then the user will be logged in automatically when they revisit your site - even after closing the browser. If you don't enable this 'remember me' feature, then the anonymous cookie will still be around when the user visits your site again. I'd like to do be able to store information in the user's anonymous profile when they are logged in. i.e. I don't want them to remain authenticated on the site if they go away and come back, but I'd still like be able to track certain things - like perhaps a visitCount property in the anonymous profile. Is there any way to access a user's anonymous profile when they are authenticated. The two cookies exist so it should be possible. I don't want to reinvent half the wheel! ps. I realize that tracking is skewed if multiple users use the system but thats fine.

  • What is best way to raise application events for use with admin network monitoring tools

    In a semi-critical .NET service application, what would be a good strategy for raising application events that could be monitored by network administration tools? The events would be for errors, status changes, and possibly other notifications. My company is planning to use some kind of tool down the road to monitor all critical machines and services. As of right now they are using Spice Works to do some monitoring but it is not known if they will keep this down the road. By strategy I mean, perhaps using some sort of protocol ( my network admin has mentioned SNMP), perhaps a service such as windows event log. I have no idea what is available, so I'm leaving the options open. With that in mind, here is a list of preferences I came up with: Somewhat easy to use with .NET. Reliability Should work well with a variety of admin monitoring tools Works with non - windows monitoring tools Works with Spice Works

  • MVC.NET UpdateModel doesn't update inherited public properties??

    I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() do not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. Well that leads us to believe it is as simple as that. It makes no mention of limitations with inheritance. My assumption is the methods are reflecting on the top class only, ignoring base properties, but this seems to be an ugly shortcoming, if so.

  • Is it possible to make the AntiForgeryToken value in ASP.NET MVC change after each verification?

    We've just had some Penetration Testing carried out on an application we've built using ASP.NET MVC, and one of the recommendations that came back was that the value of the AntiForgeryToken in the Form could be resubmitted multiple times and did not expire after a single use. According to the OWASP recommendations around the Synchronizer Token Pattern: "In general, developers need only generate this token once for the current session." Which is how I think the ASP.NET MVC AntiForgeryToken works. In case we have to fight the battle, is it possible to cause the AntiForgeryToken to regenerate a new value after each validation?

  • Will it be possible to use any asp.net and silverlight controls in Intraweb XII?

    I am researching a lot on intraweb, I read that in Intraweb XII (when will this be released?) it will be possible to have: 1) "silverlight enabled controls" (mentioned here, this is the old IW XI roadmap anyway silverlight task has been moved to XII now) 2) "IntraWeb XII [...] will contain the integration with CrossTalk and ASP.NET" (mentioned here, check for Intraweb XII paragraph). Now I don't understand what this mean in detail. I think IW is very cool, but it lacks a good choice of components, there is only one vendor (TMS) that makes good components, but of course one can wonder "why to be limited to one vendor when I can use more components from more vendors"? So does anyone (ideally from IW team, or that really knows the inner workings of IW XII, I mean the details of the roadmap, since XII is not being developed yet) know what the bold sentences above mean? Will this mean I can use inside IW 3rd party components from any ASP.NET and Silverlight vendor like Telerik, DevExpress, ComponentOne, and many, many, more?

  • Import web.go error after using goinstall

    With halfdans advice, I was successfully able to use goinstall github.com/hoisie/web.go without any errors after installing git first. However, now when I try to compile the sample code given, go is not finding the web package. I get the error, main.go:4: can't find import: web On this code package main import ( "web" ) func hello(val string) string { return "hello " + val } func main() { web.Get("/(.*)", hello) web.Run("0.0.0.0:9999") } Is there something special I need to do in order for it to recognize the package? I found the package source at $GOROOT/src/pkg/github.com/hoisie/web.go/web. I tried github.com/hoisie/web.go/web as the import and it still did not like that.

I have not found any other questions on Disqus and BlogEngine.NET.   • How do I repopulate the view model in ASP.NET MVC 2 after a validation error?

    I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2 and here's the issue. My View Model looks something like this. It includes some fields which are edited by the user and others which are used for display purposes. Here's a simple version public class MyModel { public decimal Price { get; set; } // for view purpose only [Required(ErrorMessage="Name Required")] public string Name { get; set; } } The controller looks something like this: public ActionResult Start(MyModel rec) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { Repository.SaveModel(rec); return RedirectToAction("NextPage"); } else { // validation error return View(rec); } } The issue is when there's a validation error and I call View(rec), I'm not sure the best way to populate my view model with the values that are displayed only. The old way of doing it, where I pass in a form collection, I would do something like this: public ActionResult Start(FormCollection collection) { var rec = Repository.LoadModel(); UpdateModel(rec); if (ModelState.IsValid) { Repository.SaveModel(rec); return RedirectToAction("NextPage"); } else { // validation error return View(rec); } } But doing this, I get an error on UpdateModel(rec): The model of type 'MyModel' could not be updated. Any ideas?

    I'm not entirely sure what to call what C# does, so I haven't had any luck searching for the VB.Net equivalent syntax (if it exists, which I suspect it probably doesn't). In c#, you can do this: public void DoSomething() { new MyHelper().DoIt(); // works just fine } But as far as I can tell, in VB.Net, you must assign the helper object to a local variable or you just get a syntax error: Public Sub DoSomething() New MyHelper().DoIt() ' won't compile End Sub Just one of those curiosity things I run into from day to day working on mixed language projects - often there is a VB.Net equivalent which uses less than obvious syntax. Anyone?

How does this differ from the System.Lazy<...> construct now available in .NET 4.0 (and perhaps earlier)? More depth based on DoctaJones' great answer: Would you recommend one over the other if I wanted to operate on IQueryable as a List<T>? I'm assuming that since Lazy<T> is in the framework now, it is a safer bet for future support and maintainability? If I want to use a strong type instead of an anonymous (var) type would the following statements be functionally equivalent? Are you missing references to Microsoft.CSharp.dll and System.Core.dll? C:\Source\DotNet\SqlSmoke\SqlSmoke\UserControls\ScriptUserControl.cs 84 73 SqlSmoke However, when I downgraded the app from version 4.0 of the framework to 3.5 (because our users only hae 3.5 and don't have rights to install 4.0). when I did this, the reference to "Microsoft.CSharp" was broken. Can I rewrite the VB.NET command in C# using syntax that is valid in C# 3.5 as I was able to in VB.NET? What would the syntax be?

I've tought: i, can create a fixed sized image (200 width x 600 height for example), with my personal frame (top, left, bottom, right element graphics) , and in the center a transparency. Ok, but i don't know how to merge the photo into the frame and save the new photo format. Does anybody have some piece of code to help me ? Thank you!

  • How can I include additional markup within a 'Content' inner property within an ASP.Net WebControl?

    I've searched the site and I cannot find a solution for my problem, so apologies if it's already been answered (I'm sure someone must have asked this before). I have written a jQuery Popup window that I've packaged up as a WebControl and IScriptControl. The last step is to be able to write the markup within the tags of my control. I've used the InnerProperty attribute a few times, but only for including lists of strongly typed classes.
