• Screenshot Tour: Ubuntu Touch 14.04 on a Nexus 7

  Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will “form the basis of the first commercially available Ubuntu tablets,” according to Canonical. We installed Ubuntu Touch 14.04 on our own hardware to see what those tablets will be like. We don’t recommend installing this yourself, as it’s still not a polished, complete experience. We’re using “Ubuntu Touch” as shorthand here — apparently this project’s new name is “Ubuntu For Devices.” The Welcome Screen Ubuntu’s touch interface is all about edge swipes and hidden interface elements — it has a lot in common with Windows 8, actually. You’ll see the welcome screen when you boot up or unlock a Ubuntu tablet or phone. If you have new emails, text messages, or other information, it will appear on this screen along with the time and date. If you don’t, you’ll just see a message saying “No data sources available.” The Dash Swipe in from the right edge of the welcome screen to access the Dash, or home screen. This is actually very similar to the Dash on Ubuntu’s Unity desktop. This isn’t a surprise — Canonical wants the desktop and touch versions of Ubuntu to use the same code. In the future, the desktop and touch versions of Ubuntu will use the same version of Unity and Unity will adjust its interface depending on what type of device your’e using. Here you’ll find apps you have installed and apps available to install. Tap an installed app to launch it or tap an available app to view more details and install it. Tap the My apps or Available headings to view a complete list of apps you have installed or apps you can install. Tap the Search box at the top of the screen to start searching — this is how you’d search for new apps to install. As you’d expect, a touch keyboard appears when you tap in the Search field or any other text field. The launcher isn’t just for apps. Tap the Apps heading at the top of the screen and you’ll see hidden text appear — Music, Video, and Scopes. This hidden navigation is used throughout Ubuntu’s different apps and can be easy to miss at first. Swipe to the left or right to move between these screens. These screens are also similar to the different panels in Unity on the desktop. The Scopes section allows you to view different search scopes you have installed. These are used to search different sources when you start a search from the Dash. Search from the Music or Videos scopes to search for local media files on your device or media files online. For example, searching in the Music scope will show you music results from Grooveshark by default. Navigating Ubuntu Touch Swipe in from the left edge anywhere on the system to open the launcher, a bar with shortcuts to apps. This launcher is very similar to the launcher on the left of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop — that’s the whole idea, after all. Once you’ve opened an app, you can leave the app by swiping in from the left. The launcher will appear — keep moving your finger towards the right edge of teh screen. This will swipe the current app off the screen, taking you back to the Dash. Once back on the Dash, you’ll see your open apps represented as thumbnails under Recent. Tap a thumbnail here to go back to a running app. To remove an app from here, long-press it and tap the X button that appears. Swipe in from the right edge in any app to quickly switch between recent apps. Swipe in from the right edge and hold your finger down to reveal an application switcher that shows all your recent apps and lets you choose between them. Swipe down from the top of the screen to access the indicator panel. Here you can connect to Wi-Fi networks, view upcoming events, control GPS and Bluetooth hardware, adjust sound settings, see incoming messages, and more. This panel is for quick access to hardware settings and notifications, just like the indicators on Ubuntu’s Unity desktop. The Apps System settings not included in the pull-down panel are available in the System Settings app. To access it, tap My apps on the Dash and tap System Settings, search for the System Settings app, or open the launcher bar and tap the settings icon. The settings here a bit limited compared to other operating systems, but many of the important options are available here. You can add Evernote, Ubuntu One, Twitter, Facebook, and Google accounts from here. A free Ubuntu One account is mandatory for downloading and updating apps. A Google account can be used to sync contacts and calendar events. Some apps on Ubuntu are native apps, while many are web apps. For example, the Twitter, Gmail, Amazon, Facebook, and eBay apps included by default are all web apps that open each service’s mobile website as an app. Other applications, such as the Weather, Calendar, Dialer, Calculator, and Notes apps are native applications. Theoretically, both types of apps will be able to scale to different screen resolutions. Ubuntu Touch and Ubuntu desktop may one day share the same apps, which will adapt to different display sizes and input methods. Like Windows 8 apps, Ubuntu apps hide interface elements by default, providing you with a full-screen view of the content. Swipe up from the bottom of an app’s screen to view its interface elements. For example, swiping up from the bottom of the Web Browser app reveals Back, Forward, and Refresh buttons, along with an address bar and Activity button so you can view current and recent web pages. Swipe up even more from the bottom and you’ll see a button hovering in the middle of the app. Tap the button and you’ll see many more settings. This is an overflow area for application options and functions that can’t fit on the navigation bar. The Terminal app has a few surprising Easter eggs in this panel, including a “Hack into the NSA” option. Tap it and the following text will appear in the terminal: That’s not very nice, now tracing your location . . . . . . . . . . . .Trace failed You got away this time, but don’t try again. We’d expect to see such Easter eggs disappear before Ubuntu Touch actually ships on real devices. Ubuntu Touch has come a long way, but it’s still not something you want to use today. For example, it doesn’t even have a built-in email client — you’ll have to us your email service’s mobile website. Few apps are available, and many of the ones that are are just mobile websites. It’s not a polished operating system intended for normal users yet — it’s more of a preview for developers and device manufacturers. • C# 2D Camera Max Zoom

  I have a simple ship sprite moving around the screen along with a 2D Camera. I have zooming in and out working, however when I zoom out it goes past the world bounds and has the cornflower blue background showing. How do I sort it that I can only zoom out as far as showing the entire world (which is a picture of OZ) and thats it? I dont want any of the cornflower blue showing. • Key Promoter for NetBeans

  Whenever a menu item or toolbar button is clicked, it would be handy if NetBeans were to tell you 'hey, did you know, you can actually do this via the following keyboard shortcut', if a keyboard shortcut exists for the invoked action. After all, ultimately, a lot of developers would like to do everything with the keyboard and a key promoter feature of this kind is a helpful tool in learning the keyboard shortcuts related to the menu items and toolbar buttons you're clicking with your mouse. Above, you see the balloon message that appears for each menu item and toolbar button that you click and, below, you can see a list of all the actions that have been logged in the Notifications window. That happens automatically when an action is invoked (assuming the plugin described in this blog entry is installed), showing the display name of the action, together with the keyboard shortcut, which is presented as a hyperlink which, when clicked, re-invokes the action (which might not always be relevant, especially for context-sensitive actions, though for others it is quite useful, e.g., reopen the New Project wizard). And here's all the code. • Modifying a HTML page to fix several "bugs" add a function to next/previous on a option dropdown

  SOF, I've got a few problems plaguing me at the moment and am wondering if anyone could assist me with them. I'm trying to get Next Class | Previous Class to act as buttons so that when Next Class is clicked it will go to the next item in the dropdown list and for previous it would go to back one. There used to be a scroll bar that allowed me to scroll the main window left and right, it's missing because (I think it was to do with the scroll left and scroll right function) The footer at the bottom doesn't show correctly on mobile devices; for some reason it appears completely differently to as it does on a computer. The "bar" practically and the Scroll Left and Scroll buttons don't appear at all on mobile devices. The scroll left button is unable to be clicked for some reason, I'm unsure what I've done wrong. Refreshing the page resets the horizontal scroll position to far left (I'm pretty sure this relates to the scroll bar) I want to also find a way so that on mobile devices the the header will not show the placeholder image, however I can't work out what CSS media tag(s) I should be using.   Hi I am using jquery 1.3.2 and asp.net mvc 1.0. Originally I was using some other rich html editor but I ran into one major problem when a user pasted in text from open office or MS office it would bring along tons of styling junk. If a user like wrote one sentence what was like 25 characters and pasted that into my current html editor the count would 25,000 characters and I don't want to store all that junk( I can't afford to). So tinyMCE seems to not have this problem. However I got some questions. It seems if you want to use for commercial use(what my site is but currently is not making very much at this time) you need to get a commercial license. However it does not say if it is free or if it will cost money. I am assuming it means that you will have to pay but I would like to confirm this. So do you have to pay for a license to use tinyMCe if your using it for commercial use? (Yes/ No) ------------------ Answer the following questions if you said "no" to the first question ----------- So would I use the jQuery package then or is it better to use the other versions? What is this .net compressor zip for? Do I need it? I only want a few of the buttons(like bold,font size) can I remove the other buttons? It seems to display a word count.   I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails and have just added an authentication piece and it is working nicely. I am now trying to go back through my application to adjust the code such that it only shows information that is associated with a certain user. Currently, Users has_many :posts and Posts has_many :comments. When a post is created I am successfully inserting the user_id into the post table. Additionally I am successfully only displaying the posts that belong to a certain user upon their login in the /views/posts/index.html.erb view. My problem is with the comments. For instance on the home page, when logged in, a user will see only posts that they have written, but comments from all users on all posts. Which is not what I want and need some direction in correcting. I want only to display the comments written on all of the logged in users posts. Do I need to create associations such that comments also belong to user? Or is there a way to adjust my code to simply loop through post to display this data. • MVC 2 with IIS 6 Problems

  Hey guys, I'm using IIS 6 on a Windows 2003 Server and I am trying to get an MVC2 project installed on that machine. I am having nightmare-ish problems doing so! I've looked up TONS of references on what to do, and not 1 single one works. (They work for MVC1 projects, as I have a few of those running already using said solutions). Does anyone have any tips/hints/ideas on what needs to be done for MVC2 projects with IIS 6? I am definitely pulling my hair out over this. I have tried it on 2 of my dev servers, and both get the same result. The closest I can get to a served page is an error page "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", however, the page has try/catch blocks that are being ignored, so I dont think its running the code on the controller, I think it's saying that the controller is the error. (For the reference, the error in question is directed at the HomeController.cs file). • Edit and render RichText

  We have an application (a custom network management tool for building automation) that supports printing labels that you can cut out and insert into the devices' front displays. In earlier versions of the tool (not developed in my company), the application just pushed the strings into an Excel file that the field technician could then manipulate (like formatting text). We didn't do this in the new version because it was hard (impossible) to keep the Excel file in sync, and to avoid a binding to an external application (let alone different versions of Excel). We're using PDFSharp for rendering the labels. It has a System.Drawing-like interface, but can output to a System.Drawing.Graphics (screen / printer) as well as to a PDF file, which is a requirement. Later, basic formatting was introduced like Font Family, Style, Size, Color which would apply to one label (i.e. to exactly one string). Now the customer wants to be able to apply these formats to single characters in a string. I think the easiest way would be to support a subset of RichText. It's not as easy as I thought though. Currently the editor just displays a TextBox for the label you want to edit, with the font set to the label's font. I thought I'd just replace it with RichTextBox, and update the formatting buttons to use the RichTextBox formatting properties. Fairly easy. However, I need to draw the text. I know you can get the RichTextBox to draw to a HDC or System.Drawing.Graphics - but as already said, I need it to use PDFSharp. Rendering to bitmaps is not an option, since the PDF must not be huge, and it's a lot of labels. Unfortunately I couldn't get the RichTextBox to tell me the layout of the text - I'm fine with doing the actual rendering by hand, as long as I know where to draw what. This is the first question: How can I get the properly layouted metrics of the rich text out of a RichTextBox? Or is there any way to convert the rich text to a vector graphics format that can be easily drawn manually? I know about NRTFTree which can be used to parse and manipulate RichText. The documentation is bad (actually I don't know, it's Spanish), but I think I can get it to work. As far as I understood, it won't provide layouting as well. Because of this, I think I'll have to write a custom edit control (remember, it's basically just one or two line labels with basic RTF formatting, not a full-fledged edit control - more like editing a textbox in PowerPoint) and write custom text layout logic that used PDFSharp rather than System.Drawing for drawing. Is there any existing, even if partial, solution available, either for the editing or for doing the layout manually (or both)? Or is there an entirely different approach I'm just not seeing? • facebook iframe stream.Publish cannot close dialog or skip

  am pulling my hair over this :( spent 10 hrs but nothing came out I read this thread http://forum.developers.facebook.com/viewtopic.php?pid=198128 but it didn't help much. I'm running a local dev App Engine server ( localhost:8080 ) iframe app so I have a couple of problems. 1) on safari 4.0.4, the publish story dialog comes up nicely with all images/data/action_links. upon posting a story (or skipping), the dialog goes blank and wouldn't close. 2) I tested the same code on firefox 3.5.8, the dialog comes up with all images/data/action_links, but then the whole thing freezes. Clicking anywhere on the dialog doesn't help at all. If i'm patient enough and click "publish", I have to wait for abt 10 seconds before the dialog says "story is published". then it freezes. (clicking on skip doesn't make a difference). btw, there is no "button clicking effect" : ie: the buttons don't look like they "sink down" upon clicking. I checked the firefox memory using the command "top" on the terminal, it all seems okay, no spike in CPU processes ( i could open other firefox tabs and work on them) My futile attempts at solving the problems... 1) so i thought, hmm could this be because of local dev (localhost) problem? I uploaded the code to the production server, the same thing happens. 2) I tried an older firefox (3.1) and the same problem persisted ( the freezing ) 3) I noticed that i kind of used 2 different FB features ( Connect and XFBML). The Connect Feature I used in the PostStory function. The XFBML feature I used before the tag. So I thought, hmm ... I tried replacing the FB_RequireFeatures["Connect"] feature with FB_RequireFeatures["XFBML"]. nothing changed. • Dojox grid having problem with Contentpane

  the grid appears properly on template's first loading. But when you click the paging button to load flooders.php thru list_result1() only the paging buttons will appear.   I found code to use a breadcrumb instead of the navigation buttons for my pages. This code works perfect with setting a page as the startup. My problem is that I need to have a window with a frame control as the startup and this is causing the breadcrumb to not show at all. I seem to be missing something with my styling. • How to get selected values from a dynamically created DropDownList Array after PostBack (Button Click)

  I have a CheckBoxList that contains Employee Names on a Wizard Step. When employees are selected and the active step is changed, the Wizard1_ActiveStepChanged function is called and it dynamically creates a DropDownList Array for each employee that is selected. Each DropDownList specifies a condition of the employee. The DropDownList is created properly. When the user clicks submit, the DropDownList array is deleted and no selected values can be pulled from the array. I understand this is an issue with the PostBack and can be fixed with ViewState, but I am trying to figure out what I can do to fix it. ViewState is enabled for the checkboxlist and the DropDownList. • Run javascript after form submission in update panel?

  This is driving me crazy! I have read at least 5 questions on here closely related to my problem, and probably 5 or so more pages just from googling. I just don't get it. I am trying to have a jqueryui dialog come up after a user fills out a form saying 'registration submitted' and then redirecting to another page, but I cannot for the life of me get any javascript to work, not even a single alert. Putting that same code in a script tag inside the updatePanel. Tried to use RegisterClientScriptBlock and RegisterStartUpScript Just doing a Response.Write with the script tag written in it. Tried various combinations of putting the entire jquery.dialog code in the registerstartup script, or just trying to change the autoOpen property, or just calling "open" on it. I can't even get a simple alert to work with any of these, so I am doing something wrong but I just don't know what it is. Here is what I know: The Jquery is binding properly even on async postbacks, because the div container that is the dialog box is always invisible, I saw a similiar post on here stating that was causing an issue, this isn't the case here. Using page_load instead of document.ready since that is supposed to run on both async and normal postbacks, so that isn't the issue. The update panel is updating correctly because <p>Did register Pass? <%= registrationComplete %></p> updates to true after I submit the form. So how can I make this work? All I want is - click submit button inside an update panel - run server side code to validate form and insert into db - if everything succeeded, have that jquery (modal) dialog pop up saying hey it worked.

I think the problem is that the div working as modal is outside the form. What do you think?

Of course I can shut it down from the console view but not with the stop button (it still searches JNDI port at the default 1099 port). I'm looking forward to any solutions. Thank you! Now the stop button is working (the server receives the shutdown messages without any additional modification of the jndi port -- there is no opportunity for it now) but it still throws an error message, though different, it's without exception stack trace: "Server JBoss 4.0 Server failed to stop."

• SVN: Release branch headaches, how to merge in website revisions as and when cleared to go live?

  I need a sanity check here if we can, any ideas on correcting/changing the following are very welcome! We've been getting ourselves in knots of late with our SVN and are trying to correct it by putting a Trunk/Release system in place. We have a large website that we develop on and we store it all in SVN. Heres what we had in mind: We have trunk and a release branch All work gets checked into Trunk. When a feature is deemed ready for the next release it is merged into a Release branch. We only have one release branch and just tag "Latest" when we do a push to live We hope to be able to get all the files changed from Latest to Head to give us a zip that we can upload (any ideas on an easy way to do this via scripting?) So we set all this up and where very happy with ourselves. Except its not working and heres why. We work on lots a different features/fixes/problems at once and they don't all get nicely checked in feature complete (but always working at least). Then sometimes you have to wait for Clients to sign off. As a result you end up with revisions which are "ready for live" being scattered with ones which are "still being worked on" in trunk. That means that the completed revisions are not getting merged in sequentially but out of order. I thought SVN could handle this, clever little thing it is, but apparently not. Heres an example: Pete changes some CSS to make a new button look pretty (Revision 1) Dave add some CSS to the bottom of the same CSS file as Pete's for a new feature (Revision 2) Dave's mod gets the nod so he merges it into Release and commits it with a log message mentioning revision number and bug tracking id. Pete adds more buttons to finish this mod, no CSS changes here though (Revision 3) Pete then merges his mods (Revision 1 and 3) into the Head of Release (which has Daves merge in it) but this over-writes Daves CSS additions which now dissapear completely. This leads to the site being broken and the Release branch being pretty much useless. So we tried some other ideas like reverting Release back to "Latest" and then just merging in all the Revisions 1,2 and 3 in order. This worked fine until we had Revision 4 which was not ready for live and Revision 5 which was. Suddenly we are getting ourselves in knots again with exactly the same problem! Ok so take three. Revert to Latest, merge in Revision 5, then do any update back to Head. Tree conflicts galore! So thats a no no. I cracked in the end and built it all up manaually but its not something I want to do regular, ideally I want to script our deployment but can't while Release is in such a mess. HELP! What the heck are we doing wrong? I can't seem to find any solutions to this problem of wanting different none sequential Revisions in Release. If its not possible thats fine but how the heck are we meant to get stuff live easily. We can't branch for every single change, the site takes 30 minutes+ to check out it would take too long. Side note, we are using TortoiseSVN so can we keep command line examples to a minimum in any answers? Latest version of TSVN and SVN Version 1.6 so we have the funky merge tracking etc. EDIT: An excellent blog post which deals with the dev/release cycle (although using GIT but still relivant) thought everyone would like to read it if they found this question interesting. • JQuery SelectToUISlider Issues

  Hopefully this hasn't been asked before as just a slider question, but I couldn't find an answer when already browsing questions. So, here goes: I have a SelectToUISlider (http://www.filamentgroup.com/lab/update_jquery_ui_slider_from_a_select_element_now_with_aria_support/) which is basically a modified JQuery UI Slider, and I'm using a range value. So, I start with one handle at 60, and another at 100 (scale from 0 to 100). What I want to do is click a radio button so that the 100 changes to a 0, and be able to change back to 100. I have been unsuccessful at changing it via JQuery selectors/javascript. However, when changing the selects to move the handles, this works, but the range appears not to follow if the second handle (at 100) moves to 0 behind the first handle (at 60). I'm thinking I might have to destroy the slider and rebuild it with the second handle (that starts as 100) become the first handle at 0 in this scenario (although I've tried destroying it and it doesn't seem to respond to that either.) After I get this working, I would also like to find some way to disable one of the handles through changing the slider property. Ie leave the handle where its at but not allow it to be dragged. Any help is greatly appreciated.
