  i am working on a project that has two interface (web and desktop), they are not performing the same tasks but they use the same BLL and DAL, the web part using 100% of the BLL and DAL, while the desktop only needs to know about 20% of the BLL and DAL. do you think it is a good idea to let the desktop use the same BLL and DAL as the web, which consequently will lead to ditributing thos BLL and DAL with the desktop application? or you think i'd better create new BLL and DAL projects just to serve the desktop app? but in this case i will fall in the trap of maintaining two copies of the same code!

Our dB is Oracle Following are my questions: How can we achieve active active configuration in Oracle? • Garbled text in Screen [closed]

  The graphical Interface in my system is garbled with some text. At the beginning I thought it was due to java and tomcat that I installed. But after removing java and tomcat, it is still the same. I am using ubuntu server and i have installed xfce desktop environment with oboard softkey I have added my dmesg output to this message. What is the problem here. I am not able to figure it out. • How can adding a server to a domain cause Remote Desktop to stop working?

  I have two dedicated with Windows 2008 R2 servers which I am using for Web hosting. One Server A is a domain controller, Server B should simply be added to the domain controlled by Server A. So I RDP'd into Server B and changed the system settings so that Server B is part of that domain. I entered my domain admin credentials, was welcomed to the domain and asked to reboot the server. So far everything seemed to work smoothly After rebooting, I could not open an RDP connection to Server B anymore: Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access to the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled. I restored an older backup of Server B and switched off the firewall before adding the server to my domain. But the problem reoccurred just the same. What could be the reason for this? The domain is brandnew and I did not change any of the default settings. Could this be some kind of domain-wide default policy that shuts down RDP on any domain clients? Or perhaps it has to do with the fact that Server B is virtual? Thanks for your help, Adrian

• Why JavaScript dialogs (alert/prompt/confirm) are not widely used and not under active development?

  If there is a need to display some simple confirmation popup, most developers would rather install jQuery, find some dialog plugin for it, skin it, than put a one liner: if(confirm("Are you sure?")) { ... } Using alert() for displaying error messages is considered cheap. And how many sites can you name that are usingprompt()? So, the question is: Is there something wrong with those dialogs so they should be avoided? Yes they have (very) limited functionality and customization, but when you don't need anything fancy, is using js dialogs still a bad practice? Why these dialogs haven't seen any improvement in past 10 years (probably longer) and none is planned for near future? Wouldn't it be nice to have native js access to fully customizable desktop-level dialogs? At least adding error/warning/info type of dialogs and adding ability to customize button captions would be a big help.

It doesn't happen all of the time and I think I've narrowed it down to something with the session, specifically the active-tabs[last-active-href] value. Since it's intermittent, I was able to print out a session of a working copy and a non-working copy. Here are both: WORKS -- Array ( [active-tabs] = Array ( [last-active-href] = index ) ) toboggan/denied DOESN'T WORK -- Array ( [active-tabs] = Array ( [last-active-href] = user/register [user] = user/register ) [wantsEvents] = [wantsResources] = [wantsSupport] = ) toboggan/denied I've also noticed that if I comment out the following line the redirection loop stops (although no page loads): $return = menu_execute_active_handler('user/register'); Any ideas? • Diagnose remote desktop freezes in Windows 7 when no BSOD?

  Okay, I'm getting no joy from Asus or Microsoft on this, so hoping for some clues on how to narrow down the cause. I have very frequent OS freezes, always & only when running Remote Destkop Client (mstsc) in Windows 7 x64. I never have a bluescreen, and there is never a minidump. The display & input just freezes -- no keyboard, no mouse, and sound will just continue the last wavelength if any. So far, I can't find a way to trap the hang given that there's no bluescreen; advanced startup & recovery settings for system failure are "Write an event" checked, "Automatically restart" checked, and "Kernel memory dump". I've updated to the lasted BIOS, and tried a few different graphics drivers, both generic & ATI. I've also tried disabling Aero, and everything about the remote desktop experience (incrementally unchecked every box in the mstsc - options - experience tab), even disabled/unplugged external monitor to make sure it wasn't a dual-monitor issue. My specs are: Asus G73jh notebook 8GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics (recently tried driver versions 8.791.0.0, 8.801.0.0) American Megatrends G73jh.211 BIOS (7/27/2010) Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Windows Memory Diagnostic passed all of the following at least 3 times with no errors: MATS+ INVC LRAND Stride6 WMATS+ WINVC This notebook is better than most at removing heat (laudable vent design), so I'm not inclined to suspect thermal causes (especially since running 1080p video for hours has never caused a freeze, but mstsc does, reliably, within 5 minutes to an hour). This did seem to start happening after a Windows Update, but I've since reverted every patch applied since a week before the first occurrence, with no joy. (And I'd only had the PC for a couple weeks before that, so it could have been chance + less actual time spent remoting at the beginning.) I'm at my wits end, and I bought this laptop primarily as a remote terminal client (go figure, right?) Any ideas on how to identify the cause of this? Thanks!

• Does Xenapp require Windows Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) licenses?

  We have a Xenapp 5.x server running for over a year now. It does not have any purchased Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) licenses installed. It is running on a Windows 2008 Server box. I am aware that Terminal Services runs fine for about 3 months and then supposedly stops issuing licenses. On occasion, Xenapp stops working and we see lots of License errors in the event log, although not necessarily every time. In most cases, a reboot or 2 resolves the problem. We figured it was because of the lack of TS licenses. I spoke with Citrix and they said we had to have the licenses, but it begs the question that if we have to have the licenses, how does it work the majority of the time without them!!?? I have not received a straight answer yet and before I tell my client to shell out more money, I need to understand the technical reasoning for how this is actually working if we are breaking the rules here. We will buy the licenses if necessary, but there has to be an explanation for this. I am hoping the community can help where Citrix apparently cannot. Thanks much!

• How to make a redundant desktop system with daily snapshots? (Is btrfs ready for use?)

  I want to configure a desktop system in which the home filesystem would be redundant (e.g. RAID-1), and would have weekly snapshots taken. I've already done this with ZFS, the snapshot system is wonderful, and with send/recv you can easily create backups on external media. Unfortunately, at that point, I want GNU+Linux and not FreeBSD or Solaris, so I'm looking for suggestions for good alternatives. I reckon that my alternatives are: btrfs - it seems to be exactly what I need, it has snapshots and commands that allow you to easily replicate zfs send. Yet all documentation mentions that it's still experimental. I can't seem to find any actual reports on its reliability or usability issues. Can you point me to any information on that issue that could clarify whether it would be a possible choice? I have a large preference for this option, mostly because I don't want to reformat the drives when btrfs becomes ready, but I there's no information on whether it's usable at all, whether it's a silly idea to use it, etc. The question that I cannot get the answer to is what does "experimental" mean. lvm snapshots and ext4 - preferably not, since it can consume an awful amount of space when new files are created. Creating 200 GB files requres 200 GB free space and 200 GB additionally for snapshots. I also have found it unreliable -- failed metadata rewrite results in an unreadable PV. I'm wondering how btrfs would compare here. A single filesystem (ext4) on a RAID-1 array with custom COW snapshots with hardlinks (like cp -al). That's my current preference if I can't use btrfs. So how experimental btrfs is, which should I choose, and do I have any other options? What if I don't keep external incremental backups, would that affect my choice?

  Hi all, sorry for the blast. I'm trying to connect to an SQLServer 2k5 using Ruby 1.8.7 over W2k3 with active record 2.3.5. But, when I ran 'rake migrate' it throws the following: rake migrate --trace Hoe.new {...} deprecated. Switch to Hoe.spec. Invoke migrate (first_time) Invoke environment (first_time) Execute environment Execute migrate rake aborted! no such file to load -- odbc (...) C:/Program Files/test/Rakefile:146 (...) So, my Rakefile in the line 146 says: ActiveRecord::Migrator.migrate('db/migrate', ENV["VERSION"] ? ENV["VERSION"].to_i : nil ) The database.yml has been configured in so many ways without success. I've tried setup to mode in odbc, to configure a system dsn, to completely use the activerecord support for sqlserver but no success at all. The same Rakefile works fine over Postgres and Oracle with the proper gems installed off course. But I cann't get this work. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• Python/Sqlite program, write as browser app or desktop app?

  I am in the planning stages of rewriting an Access db I wrote several years ago in a full fledged program. I have very slight experience coding, but not enough to call myself a programmer by far. I'll definitely be learning as I go, so I'd like to keep everything as simple as possible. I've decided on Python and SQLite for my program, but I need help on my next decision. Here is my situation 1) It'll be a desktop program, run locally on each machine, all Windows 2) I would really like a nice looking GUI with colors, nice screens, menus, lists, etc, 3) I'm thinking about using a browser interface because (a) from what I've read, browser apps can look really great, and (b) I understand there are lots of free tools to assist in setting up the GUI/GUI code with drag and drop tools, so that helps my "keep it simple" goal. 4) I want the program to be totally portable so it runs completely from one single folder on a user's PC, with no installation(s) needed for it to run (If I did it as a browser app, isn't there the possibility that a user's browser settings could affect or break the app. How likely is this?) For my situation, should I make it a desktop app or browser app?

• Will Learning C++ Help for Building Fast/No-Additional-Requirements Desktop Applications?

  Will learning C++ help me build native applications with good speed? Will it help me as a programmer, and what are the other benefits? The reason why I want to learn C++ is because I'm disappointed with the UI performances of applications built on top of JVM and .NET. They feel slow, and start slow too. Of course, a really bad programmer can create a slower and sluggish application using C++ too, but I'm not considering that case. One of my favorite Windows utility application is Launchy. And in the Readme.pdf file, the author of the program wrote this: 0.6 This is the first C++ release. As I became frustrated with C#’s large .NET framework requirements and users lack of desire to install it, I decided to switch back to the faster language. I totally agree with the author of Launchy about the .NET framework requirement or even a JRE requirement for desktop applications. Let alone the specific version of them. And some of the best and my favorite desktop applications don't need .NET or Java to run. They just run after installing. Are they mostly built using C++? Is C++ the only option for good and fast GUI based applications? And, I'm also very interested in hearing the other benefits of learning C++.

• Java vs. C variant for desktop and tablet development

  I am going to write a desktop application, but I am conflicted concerning which language to use. It (the desktop application) will need to have a good GUI, and to be extendable (hopefully good with modules of some sort). It must be completely cross-platform, including executable in various tablet environments. I put this as a requirement while realizing that some modification will no doubt be necessary. The language should also have some form of networking tools available. I have read http://introcs.cs.princeton.edu/java/faq/c2java.html and understand the differences between Java and C very well. I am looking not necessarily at C, but more at a C variant. If it is a complete toss-up, I will use Java as I know Java much better. However, I do not want to use a language that will be inferior for the task I wish to accomplish. Thank you for all suggestions and explanations.   I have 2 computers now: downloader (asus at4nm10t-i) with debian and desktop (asus sabertooth 990fx) with gentoo in the same network under NAT even with the same ethernet card: RTL8111E. driver r8169 is compiled as module on both computers. Sometimes in evenings desktop cannot connect to google and all its services like now: curl -v http://www.google.by on downloader it received server's answer immediately. on desktop it hanged and when I ran in other terminal: netstat -ntp | grep curl >>tcp 0 1 192.168.0.7:54126 173.194.35.191:80 SYN_SENT 4876/curl after 1-2 minutes it received server's answer. I was tried to change ip of network, mac address of desktop but nothing changed. When I was trying to connect to another services except google: curl -v http://www.yahoo.com both computers received answers immediately! Only when I rebooted desktop it begins to work with google services correctly I cant understand what is this bug related to. In which bugtracker should I post this: r8169 or linux kernel or google? PS. Desktop was checked with memtest: 5 passes - no errors

• How do I make dashboard widgets active on logon?

  There are a few dashboard widget that are useful even when not going in Dashboard. For example, SVN Notifier sends a Growl notification when commits are made to a repository you want to watch. Or, Delivery Status does the same for status update on tracked packages. The thing is when I log into OS X, those status updates won't happen until the first time I actually enter into Dashboard, so it looks like they are not initialized at startup. How to fix this?
