• Dealing with Expression Blend's lack of support for C++/CLI projects

  I have a WPF C# project that references a C++/CLI mixed mode project. I'm having trouble using the WPF project in Expression Blend 3. I'm new to Blend so perhaps this is obvious, but it won't display the xaml designer properly until it builds the project. In my case it complains that my custom commands are not "recognized or accessible" and the solution is to build the project in Blend. But I can't build the project because it references a C++/CLI mixed mode project which Blend won't load. The WPF project is pure C# it just happens to reference a C++/CLI mixed mode project but I'm not asking Blend to do anything with the mixed-mode assembly. How can I work around this problem? Edit: I was able to get it to build by removing the reference to the C++/CLI mixed mode project and replacing it with a reference to the actual assembly. However this is not ideal because in my past experience Visual Studio will not always be able to resolve the reference when switching between release and debug configurations.

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and VB.Net: I have a working web app that uses an ASMX web service which is compiled into its separate assembly. I have another class library project compiled as a separate assembly that serves as a proxy to this web service. This all seems to work at runtime but I am getting this warning at compile time which I don't understand and would like to fix: Type of member 'wsZipeee' is not CLS-compliant I have dozens of webforms in the main project that reference the proxy class with no compile time complaints as this snippet shows: Imports System.Data Partial Class frmZipeee Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public wsZipeee As New ProxyZipeeeService.WSZipeee.Zipeee Dim dsStandardMsg As DataSet Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load And yet I have one webform (also in the root of the main project) which gives me the "not CLS-compliant" message but yet attempts to reference the proxy class just like the other ASPX files. I get the compile time warning on the line annoted by me with 'ERROR here.. Imports System.Data Partial Class frmHome Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public wsZipeee As New ProxyZipeeeService.WSZipeee.Zipeee ERROR here Dim dsStandardMsg As DataSet Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load This makes no sense to me. The file with the warning is called frmHome.aspx.vb; all others in the project declare things the same way and have no warning. BTW, the webservice itself returns standard datatypes: integer, string, and dataset.

• Reflection and Operator Overloads in C#

  Here's the deal. I've got a program that will load a given assembly, parse through all Types and their Members and compile a TreeView (very similar to old MSDN site) and then build HTML pages for each node in the TreeView. It basically takes a given assembly and allows the user to create their own MSDN-like library for it for documentation purposes. Here's the problem I've run into: whenever an operator overload is encounted in a defined class, reflection returns that as a "MethodInfo" with the name set to something like "op_Assign" or "op_Equality". I want to be able to capture these and list them properly, but I can't find anything in the MethodInfo object that is returned to accurately identify that I'm looking at an operator. I definitely don't want to just capture everything that starts with "op_", since that will most certainly (at some point) will pick up a method it's not supposed to. I know that other methods and properties that are "special cases" like this one have the "IsSpecialName" property set, but appearantly that's not the case with operators. I've been scouring the 'net and wracking my brain to two days trying to figure this one out, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

• Is it possible to De-Serialize a new Derived class using Old Binary?

  In my project I have a class which I Serialize in Binary format to the disk. Due to some new requirement I need to create a new class which is derived from the original class. eg [Serializable] public class Sample { String someString; int someInt; public Sample() { } public Sample(String _someString, int _someInt) { this.someInt = _someInt; this.someString = _someString; } public String SomeString { get { return someString; } } public int SomeInt { get { return someInt; } } } [Serializable] public class DerivedSample : Sample { String someMoreString; int someMoreInt; public DerivedSample () : base() { } public DerivedSample (String _someString, int _someInt, String _someMoreString, int _someMoreInt) : base(_someString, _someInt) { this.someMoreString = _someMoreString; this.someMoreInt = _someMoreInt; } public String SomeMoreString { get { return someMoreString; } } public int SomeMoreInt { get { return someMoreInt; } } } When I try to De serialize an old file which contains only object of Sample it works fine, in the current assembly. That means backward compatibility is there. But when I try to deserialize the file which contains object of DerivedSample using the previous version of the assembly application crashes. Which means forward compatibilty needs to be taken care off... It it possible to say read only the base class part of the object from new version of the file?

• Localisable Resources: how can (should one?!) wrap a UI layer source as a BL layer service?

  A service that returns localised strings could be wrapped in a service, so that it could be used both locally (eg in an MVC app) and remotely (eg possibly Silverlight). But...if sticking with the standard practice of creating resources in the UI assembly, that would in effect make a lower layer (BL/Services) have to have a ref on a higher layer (UI)...a definite no-no. And whereas a lot of AppWide resources (eg: AppName, OK, Cancel, etc.) could be defined in a Common cross-cutting assembly, and the BL/ResourceSerouce could ref and wrap those, that doesn't work in a a Modular App, where the Core app should have no binding to/knowledge of any Module. One solution could be to have each module, once mounted in mem, 'register' their Resource files with the service, who would then return it to the service (rather a long round trip, but at least consistent as a service, and potentially resources/images could be shared with other resources). Secondly, that may work in a web app...but not sure how that pattern could be extended to a Silverlight modular app (the round tripping becomes prohibitive). ie...what are best practices for allowing Resources to be to be defined by the UI designer, in a higher level, but served from the lower BL layer, as a Service? Or is there a better way of understanding/solving the problem?

• Why does this program require MSVCR80.dll and what's the best solution for this kinda problem?

• Converting to MVC3 - some views still want 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0,

  I've used the directions from the release notes and have been able to navigate most pages - my unit tests are not comprehensive but most all pass. However...when I attempt to edit an existing or create a new user I'm getting the error pasted below - notice that it's references version=1... - this project started life as a v1 and was converted to mvc2 at the RTM. I'm still working with V2 projects but no longer any v1. Am i due for a GAC cleansing? Server Error in '/' Application. • Cannot create a new VS data connection in Server Explorer

  I have a local instance of SQL Server 2008 express edition running on my development PC. I'm trying to create a new data connection through Visual Studio Server Explorer. The steps are the following: Right click the "Data Connections" node = Choose Data Source. I select "Microsoft SQL Server" as the data source. The "Add Connection" dialog window appears. I select my local server instance = "Test connection" works fine. I select "AdventureWorks" as the database name = "Test connection" works fine. Next I hit the "Ok" button = Error message: "This server version is not supported. Only servers up to MS SQL Server 2005 are supported." I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition. The target framework of the application is ".NET framework 3.5". I have a reference to System.Data (framework v2.0) and cannot find another version of the assembly on my system. Am I referencing the wrong assembly? How can I fix this problem?

• Anyone Experiencing Slow Builds With VS2010?

  Hi, We've recently upgraded to the final release of VS2010 and are experiencing very slow build times compared to the same code under 2008. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same so I can work out whether it's just our environment or not? A few details: Using VS2010 Ultimate on Windows 7 with fairly beefy machines, talking to TFS 2010. The solution has been upgraded from VS2008 but still builds against .NET 3.5 and ASP.NET MVC 1.0. It doesn't seem to be the compilation itself taking long but something else in the build process. This is because even projects that are up to date and don't need compiling are taking a few seconds or so to process. It's not due to an Visual Studio addin because a couple guys in the team haven't installed any. The first build after loading VS2010 is pretty quick, then they seem to slow down over time. For example on of the projects in my solution just took 00:00:00.08 to process after a restart. (The project was up to date and didn't need compiling) I then immediately hit rebuild and it jumps to 00:00:01.33. We're also experiencing the problem with another solution that uses .NET 4.0 that was building perfectly fine under VS2010 RC. There are no build events or anything like that I can blame, just straightforward assembly builds. The IDE is not very responsive during the slow builds. Anyone else has similar problems? Update: It looks like the resolving assembly references is taking a long time. Looking at the MSBuild diagnostic output or the example above the first build has 30ms for ResolveAssemblyReferences, the second build has 800ms. Subsequent builds seem to be taking longer copying stuff around, e.g. CopyFilesToOutputDirectory jumps from 1ms to 27ms.

• .NET Embedded Manifest Crashes XP

  Hi, I am embedding a manifest in a .NET exe so that it can request elevated permissions in Vista and Windows 7. The manifest that I am using is as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0" name="ElevationTest" type="win32"/> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> </assembly> It works as expected in Vista and Windows 7 but crashes XP with the standard "... has encountered a problem and needs to close..." error. If I don't embed any manifest then it works as expected but will obviously not have the required permissions in Vista and Windows 7. What is a standard way of producing an exe that will function with the correct permissions in XP and Vista / Windows 7? Thanks, Alan

• Building a structure/object in a place other than the constructor

  I have different types of objects representing the same business entity. UIObject, PowershellObject, DevCodeModelObject, WMIObject all are different representation to the same entity. So say if the entity is Animal then I have AnimalUIObject, AnimalPSObject, AnimalModelObject, AnimalWMIObject, etc. Now the implementations of AnimalUIObject, AnimalPSObject, AnimalModelObject are all in separate assemblies. Now my scenario is I want to verify the contents of business entity Animal irrespective of the assembly it came from. So I created a GenericAnimal class to represent the Animal entity. Now in GenericAnimal I added the following constructors: GenericAnimal(AnimalUIObject) GenericAnimal(AnimalPSObject) GenericAnimal(AnimalModelObject) Basically I made GenericAnimal depend on all the underlying assemblies so that while verifying I deal with this abstraction. Now the other approach to do this is have GenericAnimal with an empty constructor an allow these underlying assemblies to have a Transform() method which would build the GenericAnimal. Both approaches have some pros and cons: The 1st approach: Pros: All construction logic is in one place in one class GenericAnimal Cons: GenericAnimal class must be touched every-time there is a new representation form. The 2nd approach: Pros: construction responsibility is delegated to the underlying assembly. Cons: As construction logic is spread accross assemblies, tomorrow if I need to add a property X in GenericAnimal then I have to touch all the assemblies to change the Transform method. Which approach looks better ? or Which would you consider a lesser evil ? Is there any alternative way better than the above two ?

In some point on 'B' code I'm going to call 'remoteObj.GetSomeData()'. This has to be done because the 'byte[]' from 'GetSomeData' method must be 'calculated' on the first appdomain. What should I do to avoid the exception, or what can I do to achieve the same result?

• Cast exception being generated when using the same type of object

  I was previously using static variables to hold variable data that I want to save between postbacks. I was having problems and found that the data in these variables is lost when the appdomain ends. I don't understand how there can be a casting issue when I am using the same class everywhere. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

• Using SimpleDB (with SimpleSavant) with POCO / existing entities, not attributes on my classes

  I'm trying to use Simple Savant within my application, to use SimpleDB I currently have (for example) public class Person { public Guid Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public DateTime DateOfBirth { get; set; } } To use this with Simple Savant, i'd have to put attributes above the class declaration, and property - [DomainName("Person")] above the class, and [ItemName] above the Id property. I have all my entities in a seperate assembly. I also have my Data access classes an a seperate assembly, and a class factory selects, based on config, the IRepository (in this case, IRepository I want to be able to use my existing simple class - without having attributes on the properties etc.. In case I switch out of simple db, to something else - then I only need to create a different implementation of IRepository. Should I create a "DTO" type class to map the two together? Is there a better way?

The container gives me ProductDao. But if I try to get IProductDao, the container throws ComponentNotFoundException. How can I correctly configure the registration?

• Objective-measures of the expressiveness of programming languages [closed]

  I am very interested in the expressiveness of different languages. Everyone who has programmed in multiple languages knows that sometimes a language allows you to express concepts which you can't express in other languages. You can have all kinds of subjective discussion about this, but naturally it would be better to have an objective measure. There do actually exist objective measures. One is Turing-Completeness, which means that a language is capable of generating any output that could be generated by following a sequential set of steps. There are also other lesser levels of expressiveness such as Finite State Automata. Now, except for domain specific languages, pretty much all modern languages are Turing complete. It is therefore natural to ask the following question: Can we can define any other formal measures of expressiveness which are greater than Turing completeness? Now of course we can't define this by considering the output that a program can generate, as Turing machines can already produce the same output that any other program can. But there are definitely different levels in what concepts can be expressed - surely no-one would argue that assembly language is as powerful as a modern object oriented language like Python. You could use your assembly to write a Python interpreter, so clearly any accurate objective measure would have to exclude this possibility. How exactly to do so is not clear and indeed appears extremely difficult, but we can't assume that just because we don't know how to solve a problem, that nobody know how to. It is also doesn't really make sense to demand a definition of expressiveness before answering the question - after all the whole point of this question is to obtain such a definition. I think that my explanation will be clear enough for anyone with a strong theoretical background in computer science to understand what I am looking for. • Having trouble redirecting frevvo using mod_proxy

Confluence sits on port 8080 while frevvo sits on port 8082. I want to redirect both of them to port 80 via Apache HTTP web server so that it doesn't get blocked by company proxies. I've been using the document on Atlassian that shows me how to run confluence behind Apache (I can't post a second URL due to being a newbie here) I've successfully redirected Confluence from port 8080 to port 80 so I can now access Confluence using www.example.com/confluence.   What keyboard shortcuts do you use in Excel? Things I've discovered recently and found very useful are: Shift + Space - select the current row Ctrl + Space - select the current column Ctrl + Shift + Space - select the block of contiguous cell Ctrl + + - Insert (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will insert a new row. Ctrl + - - Delete (as in the context menu). If the current row is selected, will delete entire row. What (apart from the normal cut, copy, paste, etc) do you use? Ctrl + 1 to open the Format dialog. Shift + F2 to add/edit a cell comment. Shift + F2, followed by Esc to select the current cell comment, which can then be moved around with the arrow keys (????) or deleted by pressing Del. Ctrl + ???? to move to the last non-blank cell in a series. This is usually the edge of a table, but not if you have blank cells in the path. Pressing End followed by an arrow key does the same thing. Alt + F11 to open the VBA editor. Alt + = to start a SUM() formula and go straight to selecting cells to be summed. Ctrl + G or F5 to jump to a cell by typing its coordinates (e.g. C3) Ctrl + Home to jump to the top left, usually A1 unless you you are in a frozen split view, in which case it will jump to the top left of the "data" area. Ctrl + ; and Ctrl + Shift + ; to insert the current date and time, respectively. I know Ben Lings already posted this one, but I find it indispensable.

  I have run into issue when set up IIS 7 Farm for Load balancing. Add 4 server to IIS Farm with appropriate ports(8080,8081,8082,8083). Also add Inbound rule for IIS Farm. • MySQL tmpdir on /dev/shm with SELinux

  On RHEL5, I have a small MySQL database that has to write temp files. To speed up this process, I would like to move the temporary directory to /dev/shm by putting the following line into my.cnf: tmpdir=/dev/shm/mysqltmp I can create /dev/shm/mysqltmp just fine and do chown mysql:mysql /dev/shm/mysqltmp chcon --reference /tmp/ /dev/shm/mysqltmp I've tried to make SELinux happy by applying the same settings that are in effect for /tmp/ (and /var/tmp/), which is presumably where MySQL is writing its tmp files if tmpdir is undefined. The problem is that SELinux complains about MySQL having access to that directory. I get the following in /var/log/messages: SELinux is preventing mysqld (mysqld_t) "getattr" to /dev/shm (tmpfs_t). • Tomcat 7 taking ages to start up after upgrade

  I recently updated my server installation from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 7, in order to take advantage of better connection pooling. My project uses Hibernate, for object persistance, a Mysql 5.5.20 database, and memcached for caching. When I was using Tomcat 6, Tomcat would start in about 8 seconds. After moving to Tomcat 7, it now takes between 75 - 80 seconds to start (this is on a Macbook pro 15", core i7 2Ghz, 8Gb of RAM). Could anyone shed some light on what might be causing this? Have I done something dense in my context.xml? Is hibernate perhaps to blame?
