  • Some Facebook Pages Show Tabs On The Top Of Page, And Others On The Left. Why?

    Hi everyone, I am developing a Facebook page for my web design/development business, and I've noticed that the page I have created has the tabs aligned to the left hand side of the page underneath the page image. I then look at other pages such as Wetherspoons and Porsche and their tabs are aligned to the top of the page. Why is it like this? Is there a configuration I've missed that allows you to change the layout of the tabs? Cheers!

  • Monitor offline adwords conversions

    I'm trying to evaluate the usefulness of Google Adwords for a friend's site. I'm trying to count the number of sales per month, and see how many have found her page because of the Adwords campaign. Her site has an online order system, but she also gets customers that buy just via the email contact and never use the online order system. There aren't many conversions per month (usually only one to three), so I don't want to miss any conversions when I want to gauge the effectiveness of a campaign. Is there a good way to also include those conversions?

  • Proper password handling for login

    I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

    Alright, I'm currently practicing schema.org microdata, and trying to find the best route for every site I build. I have found that i can piggyback itemprops on open graph meta tags. I would like to piggyback more itemprops on opengraph meta tags. However, schema.org requires you to change itemtypes to define all aspects of a "thing". Say I'm defining a LocalBusiness. Open graph has street address, locality, and region i'd like to piggyback on. I'd have to do something like: <html lang="en" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/LocalBusiness"> <head> ... <meta itemprop="name" content="Business Name" /> <meta property="og:url" itemprop="url" content="http://example.com" /> <meta property="og:image" itemprop="image" content="http://example.com/logo.png" /> <span itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> <meta property="og:street-address" itemprop="streetAddress" content="1234 Amazing Rd." /> <meta property="og:locality" itemprop="addressLocality" content="Greenfield" /> <meta property="og:region" itemprop="addressRegion" content="IN" /> </span> </head> Although there's more that can be added in, this is enough of an example to show what I'm trying to achieve.   • Does Google Analytics exclude Campaign traffic from Facebook in the Social reports?

    For a while we have used campaign tags when putting posts on Facebook so that we can run campaign reports in Google analytics on those links. However it appears that traffic from those links are being excluded in Google's Social reports. For example between 7/20 and 8/19 I'm seeing 123 Visits where Facebook is the source in my Campaigns report, but only 29 Visits where Facebook is the source in my Social Sources report. Main questions: Does Google exclude campaign traffic from it's social reports? If it does, is there any way to reconcile that so that the traffic shows up in both reports? If it doesn't, what could be causing the vast discrepancy? One observer noted that we are setting the Medium to "Post" when passing the campaign parameters, and that Google may only allow "Referral" traffic in it's social reports (Just speculation). In that case we could potentially change the Medium to "Referral", but that would undermine some of our strategy in being able to set different mediums. I have also considered that maybe the campaign traffic came to the site several times, and the social report may count the same user as less visits, however over 70% of the Facebook campaign traffic is new traffic, so at a minimum there would need to be over 85 Visits on the Social side for that argument to be valid. I've done several searches for any information on this topic, and haven't run across much of anything. I did post the same question on Google's Product Forum and have not gotten a response. The title of that question was 'Facebook Campaign Traffic Not Showing in Social Reports'. The inability to pass campaign data on Facebook posts would make evaluating the performance of those specific posts very difficult, so I'm hoping there is a solution to this.

    I have a CPanel server with 5 IPs and a few domains. During night, access to main domain through HTTP return 324 no response many times. After several refresh it comes but many assets won't load and return 324. Using HTTPS is fine. During day HTTP is also fine. But another domain on that very sever works fine all the day through HTTP. The server DNS are ns1 and ns2 of the first domain. Second domain is on the shared IP and first domain has a dedicated IP. I cant resolve the problem :( and appreciate any help so much!

  • Redisigning an old site, structure change etc

    I have an old site built in 2006, it has around 200 pages and 500 pictures. Every single page is of course indexed as well as images. It is very well ranked for targeted keywords and I receive good amount of SEO traffic (I guess that's due the various campaigns, branding, ppc, etc..) Problem: Site has outdated design, pages and images have not so proper names, there are no heading and alt tags, it was built in tables, inline CSS etc.. Goal: Complete redisign site, use divs, change file names, add proper meta data, alt tags etc.. Question: How this can affect current SEO positions? I will redirect (301) every single page to the new one, build site map, but what to do with images? Do I need to redirect them also? Any other suggestion?

    Is there any reason to buy an SSL certificate directly from the host (for $49, for example), instead of through a well-known reseller, for only $10.95? Specifically in my case, I just need to encrypt user data as they fill out forms. Nothing too critical, only usernames and passwords. I don't think my users actually care about the brand name or "trust" level behind the certificate, I'm just looking out for them.

    I am frustrated to no end with my current hosting provider, mediaTemple. Yes, they are flashy, and have some decent degree of flexibility with their GS plan, which I have. But anytime I install a site that needs a database, it is slow. like really slow. Taking anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds just to load a page. I would host in house, but there are a lot of complications that come with a LAMP server that I don't want to deal with. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time developing. What can you recommend?

    I will be doing a bunch of things to give one of my projects (main app) a big initial push for which I will be building a few small Facebook apps which will help in promoting the main apps. Traffic from these apps need to be tracked individually. My main app will be posting on the walls when the user needs to be notified. Traffic from these posts need to be tracked. Traffic from emails sent by the main app need to be tracked, like different types of email. I need to track all of these & possibly a couple of more but I need to be sure that I build my campaign URLs correctly as I won't get another chance to fix it. Correct me where I am wrong: Campaign Name: Launch Campaign Medium: Email Campaign Source: Type1 or Type2 (I can break it down for different types of email, right?) For apps: Campaign Name: Launch Campaign Medium: Apps Campaign Source: App1 or App2 (I can break it down here for different apps, right?) What if I want to track two different links within a single email or a single app? Any way of tracking them individually too but still keeping to track them as one because tracking them as one makes more sense for me. Campaign Term & Campaign content is irrelevant in my case, or I can/should use them for something? And I will also be tracking traffic of different apps. Should I do more? Let me know if my scenario wasn't clear enough & I need to explain more.

    I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?     Re: Google's ad placement policy I have noticed that when clicking on some Forbes links, I am taken to a screen with an ad in the middle - at the top there is a link to skip the ad. Upon clicking on the skip link I am taken to the article I want to view. I want to implement something similar on my sites, where, when clicking on a search result, a the results window first displays one AdSense add on the screen with a similar UI as what I saw on Forbes. Currently, when a user clicks on a result, a new tab/window opens with the result. What I am proposing is that before the result appears, the screen displays a "Continue to result" link at the top in large letters, and in the center of the page, "Advertisement" with the ad below. This is the only popup that is user initiated and there are no other popups on the site. Navigation elements are not modified in any way. Will I get penalized by Google for implementing this?

Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website!
