  • Blank Screen on 12.04

    - by stupidwhiteguy
Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

  • How to Identify and Backup the Latest SQL Server Database in a Series

I have to support a third party application that periodically creates a new database on the fly. This obviously causes issues with our backup mechanisms. The databases have a particular pattern for naming, so I can identify the set of databases, however, I need to make sure I'm always backing up the newest one. • How can I design multi-threaded application for larger user base

    - by rokonoid
Here's my scenario, I need to develop a scalable application. My user base may be over 100K, every user has 10 or more small tasks. Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination. So here's the processing of a small task: while(true){ Boolean isNewInformationAvailable = checkWhetherInformationIsAvailableOrNot(); If(isNewInformationAvailable ==true){ fetchTheData(); writeToDatabase(); findTheDestination(); deliverTheData(); isAvailable =false; } } As the application is large, how should I approach designing this? I'm going to use Java to write it. Should I use concurrency, and how would you manage the concurrency?

  • Process monitoring in Linux environment?

    - by poly
I'm trying to write a multi threaded/processes application and it need to know how to monitor a process from another process all the time. So here is what I have, I have a 2 processes, each with multiple threads that handle the network part, then another 2 process also with multiple threads that interact with DB and with the network processes, what I need to do is that if for example one of the network processes goes down the DB process start sending to the live network process until the second one is up again. I'm using fifo between the DB and the network process. I was thinking of sending messages with message passing all the time but not sure whether this is a good idea or I need to use some other IPC for this issue, or probably neither is good and I need to use entirely something else?

  • Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 2)

    - by hinkmond
To start out our ghost hunting here at the Oracle Santa Clara campus office, we first need a ghost sensor. It's pretty easy to build one, since all we need to do is to create a circuit that can detect small fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, just like the fluctuations that ghosts cause when they pass by... Naturally, right? So, we build a static charge sensor and will use a Java Embedded app to monitor for changes in the sensor value, running analytics using Java technology on a Raspberry Pi. Bob's your uncle, and there you have it: a ghost sensor. See: Ghost Detector So, go out to Radio Shack and buy up these items: shopping list: 1 - NTE312 JFET N-channel transistor (this is in place of the MPF-102) 1 - Set of Jumper Wires 1 - LED 1 - 300 ohm resistor 1 - set of header pins Then, grab a flashlight, your Raspberry Pi, and come back here for more instructions... Don't be afraid... Yet. Hinkmond

  • Black screen on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by user1648371
I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm experiencing some problems. The first thing I noticed is that when I click the Workspace switcher all I get is a black screen (I can guess where the different workspaces are located and clicked on them, not a practical solution though). In addition when I lock the screen or suspend the laptop (a Vaio VPCEB4M1E) I get a shifted screen (I see the right most vertical stripe on the left size of the monitor and nothing about all the rest, to put it clearly I can see the gear that allows me to turn the pc off, etc, but not much more..) when I go to the additional driver menu I see the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" are installed and the post-release update version is available. I don't know if the problem is driver related, so before doing anything I'd like to get some suggestions from you guys. Thanks you!

  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS AMD64 randomly uninstals packages / applications

    - by Jacob Lindeen
I am having a strange issue. Occasionally when installing new packages, I will get a system crash notification which I will report. The environment then becomes unstable, unity crashes and all open windows, loose title bars, and the main launcher shuts down. I usually have to run the command unity --replace to restore functionality, but ultimately end up having to reboot. Upon booting back up I find all of my user-installed packages are gone and I have to reinstall them via apt. Please tell me someone else is having this issue, because this is the second system and third install I have had this issue on.

  • Screen Brightness Stuck on high on an HP dv7t laptop

    - by theJollySin
I have an otherwise fully-functioning install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my HPdv7t laptop. When I press the 'brightness buttons' on the keyboard the associated images appear on my screen to say I am increasing/decreasing the screen brightness. When I go into "System Settings" I can move the 'brightness slider bar' up and down. But none of that changes the fact that my screen is stuck on the highest brightness setting. ANY clues on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. This giant 17-inch monitor is blinding, and this is making it hard to code for any length of time.

  • Unable to use separate X-Screen's GTX 550ti Ubuntu 12.10

    - by user12622
I am currently trying to get from "Twin View" to using separate X screen's on Ubuntu 12.10, however I'm not having a great deal of luck. I am using an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti and am on driver version 304.51 Initially, when I turn on the separate X screens option, presents me on the 1 monitor with a box to accept the changes, however the 2nd screen goes black, and effectively, Ubuntu only seems to recognise the one screen. When I reboot, I boots back into Ubuntu with both screens working in Twinview. I'm not too sure where to start, but my xrandr can be found: Xrandr Any help is greatly appreciated, this is the last but one thing I need to make Ubuntu my only OS, so fingers crossed we can crack it :)

  • eth0 not working on startup

    - by user4106
Hi to all, This might sound strange but, working with my Lubuntu 10.04 i've experienced troubles when connecting to my eth0 newtwork. After some googling, i've found out that by writting in the CLI the following command: mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD and activating the eth0 in the toolbar (by clicking "activate eth0") everything works just fine. Well, up to now, i did not have any problem, because every time i turned on the computer i had to do this, but it was very little effort. But now, i would like to use the machine as a file server, accesing it by ssh, without monitor or keyboard. So, i won't be able to make this actions, and can't do this at startup because mii-tool needs root permissions. So, the question is: Do you know what does that command do, and how can id make that change permanent? Or do you know any other solution for my problem? I hope i was clear! If not, tell me and i'll try to be as clearer as possible. Thanks in advance!

  • Secondary display showing Ubuntu logo, but is not detected

    - by user72873
I recently installed Ubuntu using WUBI, and it worked perfectly. However, my laptop is showing the main desktop screen, and my secondary display is only showing the Ubuntu logo with its loading bar underneath, nothing more. When I go to 'displays' it is only detecting my laptop screen, and not my Asus monitor (connected with a vga). Things I've done so far: Unplug and replug vga cable. Reboot computer. Re-install Ubuntu. Checked to see if any drivers needed to be installed. None were needed. I have a Thinkpad W520, with a Nvidia Quadro 1000M Thanks for the help!

  • Planning for Disaster

There is a certain paradox in being advised to expect the unexpected, but the DBA must plan and prepare in advance to protect their organisation's data assets in the event of an unexpected crisis, and return them to normal operating conditions. • Implementing scrolling buttons in android

    - by Twirling Hearth
I want to create an Android app in which the buttons scroll up or down the screen, kind of like a "wheel", so that when the "last" button is reached, it is simply followed seamlessly by the first one. I would want it to look something like the Price Is Right wheel. (This video at 0:12.) I want the first round of buttons to be presented for the user to tap the screen and make his choice, which would lead to a second round of buttons based on the first choice, and a third round based on the second choice. I've done a number of different google searches, but nothing so far. Any ideas?

  • Parallel Threading in Multi-Language Software?

    - by Smarty Twiti
I'm developing a software that contain many modules/Daemon running in parallel manner, what i'm looking for is how to implement that, i cannot use Thread because some of those modules/Daemon are perhaps implemented in other languages (C,java,C#...). For example I'm using C for Hooking Messages exchanged between Windows kernel and top level applications, Java/C# to use some free library to simply parse XML(for example) or to accept and execute commands over the network..this can be done by C Language but just to improve productivity... Finally for GUI I'm using Ultimate++ (c++) that is like the main process that call and monitor(activate/deactivate/get state) of all other modules/Daemon through an interface. I admit that the development of each module/Daemon in a separate language greatly facilitates maintenance, but especially I am obliged to do that.. What is the best practice way to do that ? All helps will be appreciated.

  • No video signal during: grub, for a moment when I log out and during shut down

    - by hushs
When I should see the GRUB menu I only see my monitor writes out this: "No optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1600*1200". If i wait for a short while, ubuntu starts to boot and it reaches the desktop. So I guess there is no video signal during that time, there's the grub menu but i cant see it and after the wait time everything is fine. I have the same problem when I log out for a short moment, before the log in screen is reached. and this also happens when i shut down ubuntu. The VGA is an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 7025. Kinda strange problem, I have no idea how to solve this. Please help :)
