• Adobe distiller: Cambria not found, using Courier.

  Whenever I try to print to PDF from an MS Word 2007 document, I get this error: Cambria not found, using Courier. (Even though I believe I removed ALL occurrences of Cambria from the document) The pdf doesn't get produced actually, all I get is this error log file with that message. Edit: I found the source of the problem. It was an MS-Word equation that insists on using "Cambria Math" that the distiller was choking over. I can't seem to get equations to print to pdf though!

• Indesign Import XML into Automatic Page generation, data merge

  I've created some InDesign Pages that I want to use as templates. I've created an XML file with all the appropriate data. I want to merge the XML data with the InDesign page and have a few hundred pages automatically generated. I've been reading online and working with InDesign's "Import XML" features without any luck. The documentation has been pretty poor for me. And Google searches haven't returned much fruitful. Edit: I'm updating this to now include my present steps 1) I create a Master Page of my template 2) I add a bunch of text frames where I want the imported data from the XML file to be places 3) I open the "Tags" window and Import and XML file 4) I mark my text frames in the Master Document with the appropriate tags 5) I then add a lot of pages (like 200) to the document 6) Then I use "Import XML" to try and get the data brought in and filled across all 200 pages. This is where I fail. So there's something I'm missing. It might be that InDesign doesn't work as I'm expecting... Anyone have any good tips for mail-merge like functionality with an XML document and auto-generation of InDesign pages? BTW, here's an example of Adobe's great documentation for merging repeated XML elements. • Examples of temporal database designs? [closed]

  I'm researching various database design for historical record keeping - because I would like to implement a prototypical web application that (excessively) tracks changes made by users and let them undo things, see revisions, etc. I'd love use mercurial or git as backend (with files as records) - since they already implement the kind of append-only changes I imagine. I tried git and dulwich (python git API) - and it went ok - but I was concerned about performance; Bi-temporal database design lets you store a row along with time periods, when this record was valid. This sure sound more performant than to operate on files on disk (as in 1.) - but I had little luck finding real-world examples (e.g. from open source projects), that use this kind of design and are approachable enough to learn from them. Revisions à la MediaWiki revisions or an extra table for versions, as in Redmine. The problem here is, that DELETE would take the whole history with it. I looked at NoSQL solutions, too. With a document oriented approach, it would be simple to just store the whole history of an entity within the document itself - which would reduce design plus implementation time in contrast to a RDBMS approach. However, in this case I'm a bit concerned about ACID-properties, which would be important in the application. I'd like ask about experiences about real-world and pragmatic designs for temporal data.

To facilitate quick data processing for queries that touch a large amount of data, Microsoft SQL Server exploits the power of multiple logical processors to provide parallel query processing operations such as parallel scans. Through extensive testing, we have learned that, for most large queries that are executed in a parallel fashion, SQL Server can deliver linear or nearly linear response time speedup as the number of logical processors increases. However, some queries in high parallelism scenarios perform suboptimally. There are also some parallelism issues that can occur in a multi-user parallel query workload. This white paper describes parallel performance problems you might encounter when you run such queries and workloads, and it explains why these issues occur. • ASP.NET MVC Postbacks and HtmlHelper Controls ignoring Model Changes

  So here's a binding behavior in ASP.NET MVC that I didn't really get until today: HtmlHelpers controls (like .TextBoxFor() etc.) don't bind to model values on Postback, but rather get their value directly out of the POST buffer from ModelState. Effectively it looks like you can't change the display value of a control via model value updates on a Postback operation. To demonstrate here's an example. I have a small section in a document where I display an editable email address: This is what the form displays on a GET operation and as expected I get the email value displayed in both the textbox and plain value display below, which reflects the value in the mode. I added a plain text value to demonstrate the model value compared to what's rendered in the textbox. The relevant markup is the email address which needs to be manipulated via the model in the Controller code. Here's the Razor markup: <div class="fieldcontainer"> <label> Email: &nbsp; <small>(username and <a href="http://gravatar.com">Gravatar</a> image)</small> </label> <div> @Html.TextBoxFor( mod=> mod.User.Email, new {type="email",@class="inputfield"}) @Model.User.Email </div> </div>   So, I have this form and the user can change their email address. On postback the Post controller code then asks the business layer whether the change is allowed. If it's not I want to reset the email address back to the old value which exists in the database and was previously store. The obvious thing to do would be to modify the model. Here's the Controller logic block that deals with that:// did user change email? if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(oldEmail) && user.Email != oldEmail) { if (userBus.DoesEmailExist(user.Email)) { userBus.ValidationErrors.Add("New email address exists already. Please…"); user.Email = oldEmail; } else // allow email change but require verification by forcing a login user.IsVerified = false; }… model.user = user; return View(model); The logic is straight forward - if the new email address is not valid because it already exists I don't want to display the new email address the user entered, but rather the old one. To do this I change the value on the model which effectively does this:model.user.Email = oldEmail; return View(model); So when I press the Save button after entering in my new email address ([email protected]) here's what comes back in the rendered view: Notice that the textbox value and the raw displayed model value are different. The TextBox displays the POST value, the raw value displays the actual model value which are different. This means that MVC renders the textbox value from the POST data rather than from the view data when an Http POST is active. Now I don't know about you but this is not the behavior I expected - initially. This behavior effectively means that I cannot modify the contents of the textbox from the Controller code if using HtmlHelpers for binding. Updating the model for display purposes in a POST has in effect - no effect. (Apr. 25, 2012 - edited the post heavily based on comments and more experimentation) What should the behavior be? After getting quite a few comments on this post I quickly realized that the behavior I described above is actually the behavior you'd want in 99% of the binding scenarios. You do want to get the POST values back into your input controls at all times, so that the data displayed on a form for the user matches what they typed. So if an error occurs, the error doesn't mysteriously disappear getting replaced either with a default value or some value that you changed on the model on your own. Makes sense. Still it is a little non-obvious because the way you create the UI elements with MVC, it certainly looks like your are binding to the model value:@Html.TextBoxFor( mod=> mod.User.Email, new {type="email",@class="inputfield",required="required" }) and so unless one understands a little bit about how the model binder works this is easy to trip up. At least it was for me. Even though I'm telling the control which model value to bind to, that model value is only used initially on GET operations. After that ModelState/POST values provide the display value. Workarounds The default behavior should be fine for 99% of binding scenarios. But if you do need fix up values based on your model rather than the default POST values, there are a number of ways that you can work around this. Initially when I ran into this, I couldn't figure out how to set the value using code and so the simplest solution to me was simply to not use the MVC Html Helper for the specific control and explicitly bind the model via HTML markup and @Razor expression: <input type="text" name="User.Email" id="User_Email" value="@Model.User.Email" /> And this produces the right result. This is easy enough to create, but feels a little out of place when using the @Html helpers for everything else. As you can see by the difference in the name and id values, you also are forced to remember the naming conventions that MVC imposes in order for ModelBinding to work properly which is a pain to remember and set manually (name is the same as the property with . syntax, id replaces dots with underlines). Use the ModelState Some of my original confusion came because I didn't understand how the model binder works. The model binder basically maintains ModelState on a postback, which holds a value and binding errors for each of the Post back value submitted on the page that can be mapped to the model. In other words there's one ModelState entry for each bound property of the model. Each ModelState entry contains a value property that holds AttemptedValue and RawValue properties. The AttemptedValue is essentially the POST value retrieved from the form. The RawValue is the value that the model holds. When MVC binds controls like @Html.TextBoxFor() or @Html.TextBox(), it always binds values on a GET operation. On a POST operation however, it'll always used the AttemptedValue to display the control. MVC binds using the ModelState on a POST operation, not the model's value. So, if you want the behavior that I was expecting originally you can actually get it by clearing the ModelState in the controller code:ModelState.Clear(); This clears out all the captured ModelState values, and effectively binds to the model. Note this will produce very similar results - in fact if there are no binding errors you see exactly the same behavior as if binding from ModelState, because the model has been updated from the ModelState already and binding to the updated values most likely produces the same values you would get with POST back values. The big difference though is that any values that couldn't bind - like say putting a string into a numeric field - will now not display back the value the user typed, but the default field value or whatever you changed the model value to. This is the behavior I was actually expecting previously. But - clearing out all values might be a bit heavy handed. You might want to fix up one or two values in a model but rarely would you want the entire model to update from the model. So, you can also clear out individual values on an as needed basis:if (userBus.DoesEmailExist(user.Email)) { userBus.ValidationErrors.Add("New email address exists already. Please…"); user.Email = oldEmail; ModelState.Remove("User.Email"); } This allows you to remove a single value from the ModelState and effectively allows you to replace that value for display from the model. Why? While researching this I came across a post from Microsoft's Brad Wilson who describes the default binding behavior best in a forum post: The reason we use the posted value for editors rather than the model value is that the model may not be able to contain the value that the user typed. Imagine in your "int" editor the user had typed "dog". You want to display an error message which says "dog is not valid", and leave "dog" in the editor field. However, your model is an int: there's no way it can store "dog". So we keep the old value. If you don't want the old values in the editor, clear out the Model State. That's where the old value is stored and pulled from the HTML helpers. There you have it. It's not the most intuitive behavior, but in hindsight this behavior does make some sense even if at first glance it looks like you should be able to update values from the model. • Uploading documents to WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services) using SSIS

  Recently I was tasked to create an SSIS application that will query a database, split the results with certain criteria and create CSV file for every result and upload the file to a Sharepoint Document Library site. I've search the web and compiled the steps I've taken to build the solution. Summary: A) Create a proxy class of WSS Copy.asmx. B) Create a wrapper class for the proxy class and add a mechanism to check if the file is existing and delete method. C) Create an SSIS and call the wrapper class to transfer the files.   A) Creating Proxy Class 1) Go to Visual Studio Command Prompt type wsdl http://[sharepoint site]/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx this will generate the proxy class (Copy.cs) that will be added to the solution. 2) Add Copy.cs to solution and create another constructor for Copy() that will accept additional parameters url, userName, password and domain.   public Copy(string url, string userName, string password, string domain) { this.Url = url; this.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(userName, password, domain); } 3) Add a namespace.     B) Wrapper Class Create a C# new library that references the Proxy Class.         C) Create SSIS SSIS solution is composed of:   1) Execute SQL Task, returns a single column rows containing the criteria. 2) Foreach Loop Container - loops per result from query (SQL Task) and creates a CSV file on a certain folder. 3) Script Task - calls the wrapper class to upload CSV files located on a certain folder to targer WSS Document Library Note: I've created another overload of CopyFiles that accepts a Directory Info instead of file location that loops thru the contents of the folder. • Microsoft Word 2007 opening all docs with field codes toggled off

  Recently, something changed with my Microsoft Word 2007 installation/preferences on Windows XP, such that whenever I open a word document, all the field codes are displayed raw instead of as their expanded value. For example, my header reads: My Name { TITLE \* MERGEFORMAT } Version { REVNUM \* MERGEFORMAT } But, if I copy and paste it here, it reads expanded: My Name My Doc Title Version 42 I expect to see the copy and paste version directly inside Word, I can work around this by right clicking on each such field and choosing toggle field codes, however, I never had to do that before, as previously, the document opened with all such field codes expanded. Another example is the Table of Contents which shows as: { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u } Instead of the full table of contents. I searched the word options dialog, but could not find anything that appeared relevant. Please suggest how to restore the old behavior.

  Back in April of 2013 I published a video titled AngularJS in 60-ish Minutes on YouTube that focused on learning the fundamentals of AngularJS such as data binding, controllers, modules, factories/services and more (watch it by clicking the link above or scroll to the bottom of this post). One of the people that watched the video was Ian Smith (his blog is at http://fastandfluid.blogspot.com). But, Ian did much more than just watch it. He took the time to transcribe the audio into text, added screenshots, and included the time that the topic appears in the original video. Here’s an example of one of the pages: The funny thing about this whole story is that I’m currently working on an AngularJS eBook concept that I plan to publish to Amazon.com that’ll be called AngularJS JumpStart and it’s also based on the video. It follows the same general format and I even paid a transcription company to generate a document for me a few months back. Ian and I have both developed training materials before and it turns out we were both thinking along the same lines which was funny to see when he first showed me what he created. • Prevent Windows 7 User Accounts from accessing files in other User Accounts

  I'm trying to set up another User Account on my Windows 7 Professional laptop for use by another person. I do not want that person to have access to any of the files in my User Account on the same machine. This machine has a single hard disk formatted with NTFS. User accounts data is stored in the default location, C:\Users. I use the computer with a Standard Account (not an Administrator). Let's call my user account "User A." I have given the new user a Standard Account. Let's call the new user's account "User B." To be clear, I want User B to have the ability to log in to her account, to use the computer, but to be unable to access any of the files in the User A account on the same machine. Currently, User B cannot use Windows Explorer to navigate to the location C:\Users\User A. However, by simply using Windows Search, User B can easily find and open documents saved in C:\Users\User A\Documents. After opening a document, that document's full path appears in "Recent Places" in Windows Explorer, and the document appears as a file that can be opened using the "Recent" feature in Word 2010. This is not the desired behavior. User B should not have the ability to see any documents using Windows Search or anything else. I have attempted to set permissions using the following procedure. Using an Administrator account, navigate to C:\Users and right-click on the "User A" folder. Select "Properties." In the "User A Properties" window that appears, click the "Security" tab. Click the "Edit..." button to change permissions. IN the "Permissions for User B" window that appears, under "Group or User Names," select User B. Under "Permissions for User B", check the box under the "Deny" column for the "Full Control" row. Ensure that the "Deny" box is automatically checked for all the other rows, and then click "OK." The system should then begin working. The process could take several minutes. When I followed this procedure, I received several "Access Denied" errors, suggesting that the system was unable to set the permissions as I had directed. I think this might be one of the reasons why User B is still able to access files in User A's account folders. Is there any other way I could accomplish my goal here? Thank you.

• Word 2010 & 2007 Blue Background on screen as default

  Default blue background and white text in Microsoft Word. I have just moved to Word 2010 (Student Version now released) and although it is possible to create individual documents with a blue background it is not possible to set the program with a blue background as a default. I understand this was discontinued with Office 2007. The only way I can open a document with a blue background is to create a Template with a blue background and use that for each document I wish to create. I'm sure there must be a method of hacking the registry to accomplish this. Can you assist. There must be countless people who who they knew how.

URL of Team Project Collection. /teamproject Required. Specifies the name of the team project. /processtemplate Required. Specifies that name of the process template. /webapplication The name of the SharePoint Web Application. Must also specify relativepath. /relativepath The path for the site relative to the root URL for the SharePoint Web Application. Must also specify webapplication. /validate Specifies that the user inputs are to be validated. If specified, only validation will be done and no portal setting will be changed. /verbose Switches on the verbose mode. I created a new Team Project in TFS 2010 Beta 1 and choose not to configure SharePoint during the creation of the Team Project. Of course I found out fairly quickly that a portal for TFS is very useful, especially the Iteration and the Product backlog workbooks and the dashboard reports. This blog describes how you can configure the sharepoint portal afterwards. Update: September 9th, 2009 Adding the portal afterwards is much easier as described below. Here are the steps Step 1: Create a new temporary project (with a SharePoint site for it). Open the Team Explorer Right click in the Team Explorer the root node (i.e. the project collection) Select "New team project" from the menu Walk throught he wizard and make sure you check the option to create the portal (which is by default checked) Step 2: Disable the site for the new project Open the Team Explorer Select the team project you created in step 1 In the menu click on Team -> Show Project Portal. In the menu click on Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Settings... The following dialog pops up Uncheck the option "Enable team project portal" Confirm the dialog with OK Step 3: Enable the site for the original one. Point it to the newly created site. Open the Team Explorer Select the team project you want to add the portal to In the menu open Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Settings... The same dialog as in step 2 pops up Check the option "Enable team project portal" Click on the "Configure URL" button The following dialog pops up   In the dialog select in the combobox of the web application the TFS server Enter in the Relative site path the text "sites/[Project Collection Name]/[Team Project Name created in step 1]" Confirm the "Specify an existing SharePoint Site" with OK Check the "Reports and dashboards refer to data for this team project" option Confirm the dialog "Project Portal Settings" with OK Step 4: Delete the temporary project you created. In Beta 1, I have found no way to delete a team project. Maybe it will be available in TFS 2010 Beta 2. Original post Step 1: Create new portal site Go to the sharepoint site of your project collection (/sites//default.aspx">/sites//default.aspx">http://<servername>/sites/<project_collection_name>/default.aspx) Click on the Site Actions at the left side of the screen and choose the option Site Settings In the site settings, choose the Sites and workspaces option Create a new site Enter the values for the Title, the description, the site address. And choose for the TFS2010 Agile Dashboard as template. Create the site, by clicking on the Create button Step 2: Integrate portal site with team project Open Visual Studio Open the Team Explorer (View -> Team Explorer) Select in the Team Explorer tool window the Team Project for which you are create a new portal Open the Project Portal Settings (Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Setings...) Check the Enable team project portal checkbox Click on Configure URL... You will get a new dialog as below Enter the url to the TFS server in the web application combobox And specify the relative site path: sites/<project collection>/<site name> Confirm with OK Check in the Project Portal Settings dialog the checkbox "Reports and dashboards refer to data for this team project" Confirm the settings with OK (this takes a while...) When you now browse to the portal, you will see that the dashboards are now showing up with the data for the current team project. Step 3: Download process template To get a copy of the documents that are default in a team project, we need to have a fresh set of files that are not attached to a team project yet. You can do that with the following steps. Start the Process Template Manager (Team -> Team Project Collection Settings -> Process Template Manager...) Choose the Agile process template and click on download Choose a folder to download Step 4: Add Product and Iteration backlog Go to the Team Explorer in Visual Studio Make sure the team project is in the list of team projects, and expand the team project Right click the Documents node, and choose New Document Library Enter "Shared Documents", and click on Add Right click the Shared Documents node and choose Upload Document Go the the file location where you stored the process template from step 3 and then navigate to the subdirectory "Agile Process Template 5.0\MSF for Agile Software Development v5.0\Windows SharePoint Services\Shared Documents\Project Management" Select in the Open Dialog the files "Iteration Backlog" and "Product Backlog", and click Open Step 5: Bind Iteration backlog workbook to the team project Right click on the "Iteration Backlog" file and select Edit, and confirm any warning messages Place your cursor in cell A1 of the Iteration backlog worksheet Switch to the Team ribbon and click New List. Select your Team Project and click Connect From the New List dialog, select the Iteration Backlog query in the Workbook Queries folder. The final step is to add a set of document properties that allow the workbook to communicate with the TFS reporting warehouse. Before we create the properties we need to collect some information about your project. The first piece of information comes from the table created in the previous step.  As you collect these properties, copy them into notepad so they can be used in later steps. Property How to retrieve the value? [Table name] Switch to the Design ribbon and select the Table Name value in the Properties portion of the ribbon [Project GUID] In the Visual Studio Team Explorer, right click your Team Project and select Properties.  Select the URL value and copy the GUID (long value with lots of characters) at the end of the URL [Team Project name] In the Properties dialog, select the Name field and copy the value [TFS server name] In the Properties dialog, select the Server Name field and copy the value [UPDATE] I have found that this is not correct: you need to specify the instance of your SQL Server. The value is used to create a connection to the TFS cube. Switch back to the Iteration Backlog workbook. Click the Office button and select Prepare – Properties. Click the Document Properties – Server drop down and select Advanced Properties. Switch to the Custom tab and add the following properties using the values you collected above. Variable name Value [Table name]_ASServerName [TFS server name] [Table name]_ASDatabase tfs_warehouse [Table name]_TeamProjectName [Team Project name] [Table name]_TeamProjectId [Project GUID] Click OK to close the properties dialog. It is possible that the Estimated Work (Hours) is showing the #REF! value. To resolve that change the formula with: =SUMIFS([Table name][Original Estimate]; [Table name][Iteration Path];CurrentIteration&"*";[Table name][Area Path];AreaPath&"*";[Table name][Work Item Type]; "Task") For example =SUMIFS(VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Original Estimate]; VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Iteration Path];CurrentIteration&"*";VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Area Path];AreaPath&"*";VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Work Item Type]; "Task") Also the Total Remaining Work in the Individual Capacity table may contain #REF! values. • Collaborate 2010: Spotlight on Oracle Content Management

  Excitement is building for the Collaborate conference April 18th through the 22nd. Outside of the event being in Las Vegas, which for me often seems to add to the excitement, there will be a great lineup of Oracle Content Management focused sessions. In fact, there are currently over 30 content management sessions scheduled, and attendees will get to hear from customers, partners, as well as Oracle experts. Attendees should expect to hear a lot about Oracle Content Management 11g at Collaborate 2010. Roel Stalman and Andy MacMillan will kick off these discussions on Monday, April 19th as they present Oracle Content Management's product strategy and roadmap (10:45 - 11:45). Monday's lineup also includes sessions on Oracle Imaging and Process Management (I/PM) 11g and Oracle Forms Recognition (2:30 - 3:30), which were both released in January.
