• MySQL Connect: Interview with Tomas Ulin

  The MySQL Connect conference is taking place September 29-30 in San Francisco. We asked a few questions about the event to Oracle’s VP of MySQL Engineering Tomas Ulin. Hi Tomas, to start with, what is MySQL Connect? A: MySQL Connect is a conference delivered by Oracle, with and for the MySQL Community. We’ll have over 60 technical breakout sessions, Birds-of-a-feather sessions and Hands-On labs running throughout the two days, plus the keynotes. So it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn a huge amount in only two days, and to network with Oracle engineers, users, customers and partners. When will the program be available online? A: The call for papers ended May 6 and we got an amazing response. The content committee has been working hard to build a great program, and the content catalog will be available by mid-June. Will Oracle MySQL engineers developing and supporting the products be there? A: Absolutely. And they’ll be available during the whole conference to answer questions. • 7 reasons you had to be at JavaOne Latin America 2012

  Yesterday was 12/12/12, and everybody went crazy on Twitter with cool memes like this one. And maybe you are now wondering why I mentioned 7 (seven) on the blog title. Because I want to play numbers? Yes! Today is 7 days after JavaOne Latin America 2012 is over (... and I had to figure out an excuse for taking so long to blog about it...). So unless you were at JavaOne Latin America this year, here are 7 things you missed: OTN Lounge mini-theatreThere was a mini-theatre holding several lightning talks. We had people from SouJava JUG, GoJava JUG, Globalcode, and several other Java gurus and companies running demos, talks, and even more. For example, @drspockbr talked about the ScrumToys project, that demonstrates the power of JSF. Hands On Lab for JAX-RS and WebSocketsOne of the cool things to do during JavaOne is to come to these Hands On labs and really do something using new technologies with the help of experts. This one in particular, was covered by me, Arun Gupta, and Reza Rahman. The HOL had more people than laptops (and we had 48 laptops!) interested on understanding and learning about the new stuff that is coming within Java EE 7. Things like JAX-RS, Server-sent Events and WebSockets. Hey, if you want to try this HOL by yourself, it is available on Github, so go for it! If you have questions, just let me know! Java Community KeynoteThis keynote presented a lot of cool things like startups using Java in their projects, the Duke Awards, SouJava winning the JCP Outstanding Award, the Java Band, and even more! It was really a space where the Java community could present what they are doing and what they want to do. There's a lot of interest on the Adopt-a-JSR program and the Adopt-OpenJDK. There's also an Adopt-a-JavaEE-JSR program! Take a look if you want to participate and Make the Future Java. Java EE (JMS, JAX-RS) sessions from Reza Rahman, the HeavyMetal guyReza is a well know professional and Java EE enthusiast from the communitty who just joined Oracle this year. His sessions were very well attended, perhaps because of a high interest on the new things coming to Java EE 7 like JMS 2.0 and JAX-RS 2.0. By the way, if you like Java and heavymetal, you should follow him on Twitter as well! :-) Java EE (WebSockets, HTML5) sessions from Arun Gupta, the GlassFish guyIf you don't know Arun Gupta, no worries. You will have time to know about him while you read his Java EE 6 Pocket Guide. Arun has been evangelizing Java EE for a long time, and is now spreading his word about the new upcoming version Java EE 7. He gave one talk about HTML5 Productivity on the Java EE 7 platform, and another one on building web apps with WebSockets. Pretty neat! Arun blogged about JavaOne Latin America as well. Read it here. Java Embedded and JavaFXIf there are two things that are really trending in the Java World right now besides Java EE 7, certainly they are JavaFX and Java Embedded. There were 14 talks covering Java Embedded, from Java Cards to Raspberry.pi, from Java ME to Java on your TV with Ginga-J. The Internet of Things is becoming true, and Java is the only platform today that can connect it all in an standardized and concise way. JavaFX gained a lot of attention too. There were 8 sessions covering what the platform has to offer in terms of Rich User Experience. The JavaFX Scene Builder is an awesome tool to start playing designing an UI, and coding for JavaFX is like coding Swing with 8 hands, one holding your coffee cup. You can achieve a lot, with your two hands (unless, you really have 8 hands, then you can achieve 4 times more :-). If you want to read more about JavaFX, go to Stephen Chin's blog post. GlassFish and Friends Party, 1st edition at JavaOne Lating AmericaThis is probably the thing that I'm most proud. We brought to Brasil the tradition of holding a happy hour for all GlassFish, Java EE friends. This party started almost 7 years ago in San Francisco, and it was about time to bring it to Brazil! The party happened on Tuesday night, right after JavaOne General Keynote, at the Tribeca Pub. We had about 80 attendees and met a lot of Java EE developers there! People from JUGs, Oracle, Locaweb and Red Hat showed up too, including some execs from Oracle that didn't resist and could not miss a party like this one.Lots of caipirinhas, beer and food to everyone, some cool music... even The Fish walking around the party with Juggy!You can see more photos from the party on an album I shared with the recently created GlassFish Brasil community on Google+ here (but you may be more interested in joining the GlassFish english community). There's also more pictures that Arun took and shared on this link. So now you may want to consider coming to Brazil next year! • Canonical Link as a Way of Fighting Scrapers?

  Hi, Let's say several external sites are scraping/harvesting your content and posting it as their own. Let's also say that you maintain a single unique/permanent URL for each piece of content, so that content aliasing (on your site) is never an issue. Is there any value from an SEO perspective to including a canonical link in your header anyway, such that when your site is "scraped", the canonical indication is injected into whatever site is stealing your content (assuming they harvest the raw HTML rather than going in through RSS etc.)? I've heard different things about the behavior of cross-site canonical links, from "they're ignored" to "behavior undefined" to "it can't hurt" to "sure that's exactly what canonical is intended for". My impression was that canonical was a good way of dealing with intra-site but not necessarily inter-site aliasing. Thanks~

• PHP Mail() to Gmail = Spam

  Recently Gmail has started marking emails sent directly from my server (using php mail()) as spam and I'm having problems trying to find the issue. If I send an exact copy of the same email from my email client it goes to the Gmail inbox. The emails are plain text, around 7 lines long and contain a URL link in plain text. As the emails sent from my client are getting through fine I'm thinking that the content isn't the issue. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could take a look at the the following headers and give me some advice why the email from the server is being marked as spam. • i18n and l10n web guidelines

  Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

• Flash video playing on top of everything else in IE7

  Hi everyone, I've been spending hours now reading up on IE7's issue with rendering Flash content on top of other elements, particularly navigation menus (this is often a problem with dropdown menus and Flash ad banners, for example). I've tried a few of the suggested solutions but none have worked for me so far. I'll do my best to explain the circumstances, and would appreciate any advice in the matter! Currently, the object and embed tags are inside a container div. My understanding of previous solutions was that the combination of the param changes and the positioning/z-index change on the container div should have resolved the issue. Alas, it is not so. The player resides on top of the footpanel. Other information that may or may not be helpful is that the page is XHTML 1.0 Transitional and that Dreamweaver reports 1 error in the HTML code: <embed> is not in the XHTML 1.0 specification. This fact does not prevent the video from being viewed in any browser tested, and the page still displays correctly in FF. Thanks in advance!

  Hi. I had a pagination related question posted earlier. Here I went through the posted answers and suggested choices and I realized that to implement pagination in an application I could still write db level queries and ensure that I could implement pagination, even if in a crude form. However I have few follow up questions now: I am trying to show SMS from a content provider. Suppose I don't want to use content provider; can I access SMS table in database through my application. Aoes android's security framework allow that? How do people generally handle pagination problems in android, related to content that they are not storing but instead are fetching through content providers. (Android's own or custom) Isn't this a bigger problem. I am surprised to find so little text online about it.

  Hi, I recently struggled with an apparently simple Android layout: I wanted a WebView above a Button. It worked fine with the following parameters: WebView: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset (by the way, what is the default?) Button: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset However if the web page became too big it spilled out over the button. I tried various combinations of weights and heights, and all except one either completely hide the button, or partially cover it. This is the one that works (copied from http://code.google.com/p/apps-for-android/source/browse/trunk/Samples/WebViewDemo/res/layout/main.xml): WebView: Height: 0 Weight: 1 Button: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset If you change any of those, e.g. give button a weight or change the WebView height to wrap-content then it doesn't work. My question is: Why? Can someone please explain what on Earth the android layout system is thinking?

  Using Sun Glassfish Enterprise server v2.1.1 I am using "alternatedocroot" via sun-web.xml for my web application to abstract out static content from actual deploy-able code (EAR/WAR) What I have is a cluster of two server instances distributed across two physical hosts - HOST1 and HOST2. "alternatedocroot" points to /data/static-content/ on both HOST1 and HOST2. Would DAS (Domain application server )take care of syncing /data/static-content between HOST1 and HOST2 if I use syncinstances=true option while starting up the cluster? Thanks!
