  Hi Nick! How are you? I'm from Brazil and study at FATEC (college located in Brazil). I'm trying to learn about AppEngine. Now, I'm trying to load a large database from MySQL to AppEngine to perform some queries, but I don't know how i can do it. I did some testing with CSV files,but is there any way to perform the direct import from MySQL? This database is from Pentaho BI Server (www.pentaho.com). Thank you for your attention.   I just finished to read "coders at works", a brilliant book by Peter Seibel with 15 interviews to some of the most interesting computer programmers alive today. Well, many of the interviewees have (co)invented\implemented a new programming language. For example: * Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang * L. Peter Deutsch: implementer of Smalltalk-80 * Brendan Eich: Inventor of JavaScript * Dan Ingalls: Smalltalk implementor and designer * Simon Peyton Jones: Coinventor of Haskell * Guy Steele: Coinventor of Scheme Is out of any doubt that their minds have something special and unreachable, and i'm not crazy to think i will ever able to create a new language; i'm just interested in this topic. So, imagine a funny\grotesque scenario where your crazy boss one day will come to your desk to say "i want a new programming language with my name on it..take the time you need and do it", what will you start to study? • What is the best software to capture full-screen 3h programming session in Windows?

  Hi, I'm planning a laboratorial experiment to assess behavior of groups when programming using some tools under study. For that, I'll need to capture their entire screen to disk. Mostly, what will be displayed is code, so I'm not to worried with image quality. However, it's paramount that the team is not able to stop the recording by accident, and the tool should be rebust enough to hold at least 3h of video. If possible, it would be nice for researchers in other rooms to "watch" the video as it is recording. Actually, this last requirement reminded me that I could use a VNC recording software, and install a VNC client in each laboratory computer. Anyway, what is your experience with this? Which software do you recommend? Thanks.

• Using Fluent NHibernate in commercial application

  I want to use Fluent NHibernate in commercial desktop application, and I'm little concerned about the licensing. I've downloaded Fluent NHibernate precompiled binaries, and it contains this list of files: Antlr3.Runtime.dll Castle.Core.dll Castle.DynamicProxy2.dll FluentNHibernate.dll Iesi.Collections.dll log4net.dll NHibernate.dll NHibernate.ByteCode.Castle.dll I guess I will have to add all of these files to my Inno Setup script, which will install them on user's computer. But what should I do to comply to all of the licenses associated with each file? I'm sure I'm not the first who wants to use Fluent NHibernate in commercial application, so I hope I won't have to study each of the licenses. I'm not a lawyer.

• Implementing a linear, binary SVM (support vector machine)

  I want to implement a simple SVM classifier, in the case of high-dimensional binary data (text), for which I think a simple linear SVM is best. The reason for implementing it myself is basically that I want to learn how it works, so using a library is not what I want. The problem is that most tutorials go up to an equation that can be solved as a "quadratic problem", but they never show an actual algorithm! So could you point me either to a very simple implementation I could study, or (better) to a tutorial that goes all the way to the implementation details? Thanks a lot!

• What should I learn after HTML and CSS?

  I am 5 days into learning how to make my website, flying through my HTML & CSS book and having fun. I’m starting to consider what to order next. I’m not sure what to study next, so please give me some advice if you can. My end goal is to create a site that has a lot of the functionality that www.edufire.com and similar sites have, just for example. I think I’m learning well with the Head First Series, and the style will probably serve me well as an intro to programming. However, I don't think the books dive too deeply into any 1 subject. I could order: A: Head First Programming: A Learner’s Guide to Programming Using the Python Language B: Head First Javascript C: Head First PHP & MySQL D: a different programming book or E: another CSS or design book to solidify my basic HTML & CSS skills Any guidance would be appreciated. Now We need to search inside that file and provide the result to the user, we need to provide that what is the best solution to implement text searching. I have just tried to identify it and got some reference like IFilter (API or interface) and Lucene.Net (open source), but not sure that is it a right solution. In initial phase it is expected to be around 50,000 resumes and it should be scalable enough if number increases. • Safari wrapping too early

  I've created a class web page with a page for midterm review. It uses jsMath to turn Tex into nice math. (MathML looks awful) Anyway, I would occasionally like to have several problems per line. Each problem is in its own <span>, so if it needs to wrap, it won't split the problem. It all seems to work, except that Safari for the Mac seems overly anxious to wrap, sometimes wrapping at 30% paragraph width. Even under inspection, it reports a width of 663px, but wrapping occurs at around 150px. There is no padding. Firefox renders just fine.   I have an interview tomorrow morning and just found out that I will also be taking an hour-long Java proficiency test! I am a certified C# .NET developer but have barely touched Java since college. (Yes, I am thinking about switching from .NET development to Java!) I'm not going to be able to effectively cram the whole of the Java library by tomorrow morning. What are some key ideas that I should study that might actually make a difference in such a short time frame? (The examiners will be taking into account that I have had little exposure to Java.)   I'd like to write down a BNF-like formal grammar for describing the command line usage of some GNU/Linux tools. My first attempt at that would be the following: (md5sum-command) : 'md5sum' (arguments-list) (arguments-list) : (argument) (arguments-list) : (arguments-list) (argument) (argument) : (file) (argument) : '--check' But as you can see this grammar allows you to specify the --check argument as many times as you wish, which is incorrect as you should use it at most one time. • Interpolation of scattered data: What could I do?

  Hi! I need your help. I'm working on a 3D chart in Java using Java 3D. It should be able to display a bunch of measured values. As measured, the data I get is scattered. This means I will have to interpolate the missing points in order to get my surface plotted nicely. I didn't study all that 3D-Geometry stuff yet and I don't know where to start. My idea is to triangulate the points to a surface and then, based on the triangulation, interpolate the missing points. (see this to have a rough idea of what I want to achieve) Does someone have experiences with the interpolation of scattered data? Is my approach the right one? If yes, what kind of data structures and algorithms will I need in order to triangulate my points cloud?

• merge sort recursion tree height

  Hello! I am learning about recursion tree's and trying to figure out how the height of the tree is log b of n where n = 2 and one has 10 elements as input size. I am working with Merge sort. The number of times the split is done is the height of the tree as far as I understood, and the number of levels in the tree is height + 1. But if you take (for merge sort) log2 of 10 you get 1, where if you draw the tree you get at least 2 times that the recursion occurs. Where have I gone wrong? (I hope I am making sense here) NOTE: I am doing a self study, this is not homework!

• phpDocumentor alternative consuming less memory

  Okay, I'm fed up with phpDocumentator. It consumes way much more memory and time than I'm willing to give it. Does there exist some really compatible program to generate documentation for PHP code? I've tried PHPDoctor, which looks nice, but it has some missing features. I've also tried PhpDocGen, but it just bails out with some Perl errors, which I'm too lazy to study. Doxygen also does not seem to play well with our sources. PS: The documentation would be for phpMyAdmin, a little bit outdated documentation is here.

  I've been using C/C++ and Python pretty seriously, but I now I see that a lot of new programming books use Java or C# as examples. I don't think I'll use Java or C# for the time being, but I guess I have to study one of the languages (or both of them) in order to read and understand the books. How similar Java and C#? If I learn Java, is learning C# almost free? Or vice versa? If I have to choose only one of the two languages, which would be better? Which has wider coverage in terms of programming language?

  I'm doing a study on large Java projects and would like to view the source code for Eclipse. I have gone to this url (http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto) and figured that the most useful cvs repository for me to look at would be this one: :pserver:[email protected]:/cvsroot/eclipse (The Eclipse platform project) However, when looking at this repository, it has so many modules! Which modules should I be trying to check out? I don't necessarily want to build the IDE from source, however, I just want to get the core Eclipse code base to perform some analysis. Would I just check out any modules starting with "org.eclipse..."? Should I be checking out any of the others? Or is there an easier way to get the source? I read somewhere that you can get the source from the binary version of Eclipse but I am unsure where to find the source.
