• How a "Collision System" should be implemented?

  My game is written using a entity system approach using Artemis Framework. Right know my collision detection is called from the Movement System but i'm wondering if it's a proper way to do collision detection using such an approach. Right know i'm thinking of a new system dedicated to collision detection that would proceed all the solid entities to check if they are in collision with another one. I'm wondering if it's a correct way to handle collision detection with an entity system approach? Also, how should i implement this collision system? • How does throwing an ArgumentNullException help?

  Let's say I have a method: public void DoSomething(ISomeInterface someObject) { if(someObject == null) throw new ArgumentNullException("someObject"); someObject.DoThisOrThat(); } I've been trained to believe that throwing the ArgumentNullException is "correct" but an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error means I have a bug. Why? I know that if I was caching the reference to someObject and using it later, then it's better to check for nullity when passed in, and fail early. However, if I'm dereferencing it on the next line, why are we supposed to do the check? It's going to throw an exception one way or the other. Edit: It just occurred to me... does the fear of the dereferenced null come from a language like C++ that doesn't check for you (i.e. it just tries to execute some method at memory location zero + method offset)?

• How to fix file system's CHS geometry?

  I'm trying to check FAT16 file system with GParted and the check fails with the following message: The file system's CHS geometry is (484, 16383, 63) is invalid. The partition table's CHS geometry is (31130, 255, 63). If you select Ignore, the file system's CHS geometry will be left unchanged. If you select Fix, the file system's geometry will be set to match the partition table's CHS geometry. The check just fails without any Ignore/Fix prompting. How do I fix this?

  Suppose I have a circle intersecting a rectangle, what is ideally the least cpu intensive way between the two? method A calculate rectangle boundaries loop through all points of the circle and, for each of those, check if inside the rect. method B calculate rectangle boundaries check where the center of the circle is, compared to the rectangle make 9 switch/case statements for the following positions: top, bottom, left, right top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right inside rectangle check only one distance using the circle's radius depending on where the circle happens t be. I know there are other ways that are definitely better than these two, and if could point me a link to them, would be great but, exactly between those two, which one would you consider to be better, regarding both performance and quality/precision? • How do I mount my External HDD with filesystem type errors?

  I am a relatively new Ubuntu user and I am having some difficulty mounting my external 2TB HDD. When I first installed Linux my external HDD was working just fine, however, it has stopped working and I have a lot of important files on there that I need. Before my HDD would automatically mount and no worries. Now, however, it doesn't automatically mount and when I try to manually mount it I keep running into filesystem type errors that I can't seem to get past. • Common reasons for the &lsquo;Sys is undefined&rsquo; error in ASP.NET Ajax applications

    In this blog I will try to summarize the most common reasons for getting the famous 'Sys is undefined' error when running an Ajax enabled web site or application (there are almost one milion results on Google for that phrase). Where does it come from? In every Ajax web pages source you will see a code like this: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize('ScriptManager1', document.getElementById('form1')); Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance()._updateControls([], [], [], 90); //]]> </script>   This is the initialization script of the ScriptManager. So, if for some reason the Sys namespace is not available when the code executes you get the Sys is undefined error. Here are the most common reasons and solutions for that problem:   1. The error occurs when you have added a control from RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX, but your application is not configured to use ASP.NET AJAX. For example, in VS 2005 you created a new Blank Site instead of a new Ajax-Enabled Web Site and the Sys is undefined message pops up. To fix it you need to follow the steps described at Configuring ASP.NET Ajax article (check the topic called Adding ASP.NET AJAX Configuration Elements to an Existing Web Site) or simply create the Ajax-Enabled Web Site. You can also check my other blog post on the matter: Visual Studio 2008: Where is the new ASP.NET Ajax-Enabled Web Site template?   2. Authentication - as the website denies access to all pages to unauthorized users, access to the Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd handler is unauthorized (this is the default handler of RadScriptManager). This causes the handler to serve the content of the login page instead of the combined scripts, hence the error. To solve it - add a <location> section to the application configuration file to allow access to Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd to all users, like: <configuration> ... <location path="Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd"> <system.web> <authorization> <allow users="*"/> </authorization> </system.web> </location> ... </configuration>   Note that the access to the standard ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd is automatically allowed for all users (authenticated and unauthenticated), so if you use the ScriptManager instead of RadScriptManager - you will not face this problem. The authentication problem does not manifest when you disable script combining or use the CDN. Adding the above configuration section will make it work with RadScriptManagers combined script.   3. The IE6 browser fails to load the compressed script. The problem does not appear in any other browser. There is a well known bug in the older versions of IE6 which lose the first 2,048 bytes of data that are sent back from a Web server that uses HTTP compression. Latest versions of RadScriptManager does not compress the output at all if the client is IE6, but in the previous versions you need to manually disable the output compression to prevent the error. So, if you get the Sys is undefined error in IE6 - update to the latest version of RadControls or simply disable the output compression.   4. Requests to the *.axd files returns Error Code 404 - Not Found. This could  be fixed easily: Check in the IIS management console that the .axd extension (the default HTTP handler extension) is allowed:     Also check if the Verify if file exists checkbox is unchecked (click on the Edit button appearing in the previous screenshot to check). More information can be found in our troubleshooting article and from the ASP.NET QA team blog post   5. The virtual directory in IIS is not marked as Web Application. Converting it to Web Application should fix the problem.   6. Check for the <xhtmlConformance mode="Legacy"/> option in your web.config and remove it. It would be rather rare to become a victim of this exact case, but still have it in mind. • Find Nearest Object

  I have a fairly sizable game engine created, and I'm adding some needed features, such as this, how do I find the nearest object from a list of points? In this case, I could simply use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance, and check the results. I know I can't simply add x and y, because that's the distance to the object, if you only took right angle turns. However I'm wondering if there's something else I could do? I also have a collision system, where essentially I turn objects into smaller objects on a smaller grid, kind of like a minimap, and only if objects exist in the same gridspace do I check for collisions, I could do the same thing, only make the gridspace larger to check for closeness. (rather than checking every. single. object) however that would take additional setup in my base class and clutter up the already cluttered object. TL;DR Question: Is there something efficient and accurate that I can use to detect which object is closest, based on a list of points and sizes?

It's easy to check if a square is inside a box whose center is another square: *** x *o* --> x is not in o's square *** **x *o* --> x IS in o's square *** This can be done by simply subtracting the coordinates of o and x, then taking the largest coordinate of that and comparing it with the half side length. Now I want to do the same thing but check if x is in o's diamond, like so: * **x **o** --> x IS in o's diamond *** * What would be the best way to check if a square is in another square's surrounding diamond-shaped area, given the diamond's half width/height?

• LibreOffice Spell Checker doesn't work?

  I was a little surprised to discover that in LibreOffice (3.5.4.2), the spell check doesn't actually work. I was surprised since spell checkers have been around since....80's? Not a difficult thing. I am running Ubuntu 12.04, on a relatively new install. I haven't done anything to my dictionaries or language files. Under toolsoptionslanguages writing aids, I have the option selected to check as I type and to use the English dictionaries. However, I get no errors when I type spelling mistakes on purpose, and when I run the checker it just says the spell check has completed and closes the window. Is this a bug with Libre? or have I done something wrong?

• Consolidating hotels data from various booking sites with different IDs or reference

  In one of my projects, I have data for hotels, and other booking sites are able to book this hotel. For example: Hotel A - Booking (ID = 4002), Expedia (ID = 123), Priceline (ID = 147) The three booking engines each uses their own Id to reference to Hotel A. I would need to check manually and make the right reference to the hotel. If I have 100,000 hotels, I have to check manually 300,000 (considering 3 booking sites) times? They might provide API, then I can cross check the name, address or latitude/longitude, but if they differ a little bit then I might give the wrong reference to the wrong hotel. I'm sure there are better ways to do this. There are many travel sites out there which do hotel price checking on many booking sites, but how do they do to make sure they are checking the right hotel on these booking sites? Anyone has any experience on this?

  Using Unity3d, I have a array which is having 8 GameObjects in grid and one object (which is already known) is in center like this where K is already known object. All objects are equidistant from their adjacent objects (even with the diagonal objects) which means (distance between 4 & K) == (distance between K & 3) = (distance between 2 & K) 1 2 3 4 K 5 6 7 8 I want to remove 1,3,6,8 from array (the diagonal objects). How can I check that at runtime? my problem is the order of objects {1-8} is not known so I need to check each object's position with K to see if it is a diagonal object or not. so what check should I put with the GameObjects (K and others) to verify if this object is in diagonal position Regards, Sam

• SharePoint 2007: Error message when adding a Web part to a list or library page

  Sytmptom:   You have a list or document library page (allitems.aspx) and you are trying to add a Web part.  You get an error message: Unable to add selected Web part(s).  (name of Web part): The file is not checked out.  You must first check out this document before making changes. Publishing features are not turned on and it is not a page that lives in a library accessible by the GUI. Solution:  Open the site in SharePoint Designer and check out the page. Then, check in the page after modifications are done.  It seems like this is just a bug.

  Despite numerous attempt, and advise, this is what I applied. sudo cp /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/* /usr/share/sounds/ Type this: cd /dev ls -l |less find 14, [0-...] This file for audio you can type cat /etc/passwc >/dev/dsp dsp if speaker device This is not a big deal but I'm an OCD person, so I would like that it works. An other issue is the screensaver, I can not watch movies. I understand that Ubuntu default settings are "Turned off start up sound, and 10 min screensaver auto" If I would be allowed to a suggestions, it is the followings: Is that so problematic to create a check box to check or un check this futures, just to be able to enjoy your product fully? Furthermore I'm reading a lot of similar issues on blogs... Annoying

• What is a good way to comment if-else-clauses?

  Whenever I'm writing a typical if-else-construct in any language I wonder what would be the best way (in terms of readability and overview) to add comments to it. Especially when commenting the else clause the comments always feel out-of-place for me. • The input doesn't recognize that I release the key?

  I'm creating a window (JOptionPane), in response to a collision. However, if the player is holding a key down when the window pops up, the input doesn't trigger a key release when the key is released. I don't think you can just check it with a isRelease function in the input, since the input is kind of corrupt. Can you help me? The way I check if the key is down: if(input.isKeyDown(Input.KEY_A)&& TestLevel.isFighting == false){ if(owner.canMoveLeft){ position.x -= speed * delta; } } I am not handling the key release by myself, but if I check if the key is down it should work. But it doesn't.

• Site returning 404 header to google, not sure why

  A Drupal site that works fine for regular users returns a 404 not found error when I try to use the W3C validator on it; it is also not being indexed by google at all (which is the main issue but I suspect there is a connection). It is a https:// site with .htaccess rule to redirect any http:// request to the https://. I had had it running in google webmaster tools and thought it was fine, but it turns out I had not added the https domain. After adding the https domain it's also returning the header as HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2012 19:37:43 GMT Server: Apache Expires: Sun, 19 Nov 1978 05:00:00 GMT Cache-Control: no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0 Robots.txt just has User-agent: * Crawl-delay: 10 # Files Disallow: /cron.php How can I check what the issue is here?

• Ubuntu server has slow performance

  I have a custom built Ubuntu 11.04 server with a 6 disk software RAID 10 primary drive. On it I'm primarily running a PostgreSQL and a few other utilities that stream data from the web. I often find after a few hours of uptime the server starts to lag with all kinds of processes. For example, it may take 10-15 seconds after log-in to get a shell prompt. It might take 5-10 seconds for top to come up. An ls might take a second or two. When I look at top there is almost no CPU usage. There's a fair amount of memory used by the PostgreSQL server but not enough to bleed into swap. I have no idea where to go from here, other than to suspect the RAID10 (I've only ever had software RAID 1's before).   Let's say I get a HBITMAP object/handle from a native Windows function. I can convert it to a managed bitmap using Bitmap.FromHbitmap(nativeHBitmap), but if the native image has transparency information (alpha channel), it is lost by this conversion. There are a few questions on Stack Overflow regarding this issue. Using information from the first answer of this question (How to draw ARGB bitmap using GDI+?), I wrote a piece of code that I've tried and it works. It basically gets the native HBitmap width, height and the pointer to the location of the pixel data using GetObject and the BITMAP structure, and then calls the managed Bitmap constructor: Bitmap managedBitmap = new Bitmap(bitmapStruct.bmWidth, bitmapStruct.bmHeight, bitmapStruct.bmWidth * 4, PixelFormat.Format32bppArgb, bitmapStruct.bmBits); As I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong), this does not copy the actual pixel data from the native HBitmap to the managed bitmap, it simply points the managed bitmap to the pixel data from the native HBitmap. And I don't draw the bitmap here on another Graphics (DC) or on another bitmap, to avoid unnecessary memory copying, especially for large bitmaps. I can simply assign this bitmap to a PictureBox control or the the Form BackgroundImage property. And it works, the bitmap is displayed correctly, using transparency. When I no longer use the bitmap, I make sure the BackgroundImage property is no longer pointing to the bitmap, and I dispose both the managed bitmap and the native HBitmap. The Question: Can you tell me if this reasoning and code seems correct. I hope I will not get some unexpected behaviors or errors. • Install server 2012 on HP ML110 G7 with B110i controller, no disks found

  I'm trying to install Server 2012 on a HP ML110 G7 with a B110i controller and four non hot-swappable SATA drives. I just can't get the Server 2012 boot disk PE environment to find any disks. I have downloaded the latest SPP (Service Pack for Proliant 2012.10) and flashed the BIOS. I have tried two different HP drivers for B110i and Windows X64, 6.18.0.64 and 6.18.2.64 to no avail. I have tried setting the controller to both AHCI and legacy mode in the BIOS, no difference. HP:s SmartStart disc for G7 servers only support installation of up to Windows Server 2008R2. HP:s installation instructions for Server 2012 Essentials says boot from the windows disk and use the storage drivers found on the SPP (I can't find any storage drivers on the SPP disk).

• Need HP recovery partition info

  I'm configuring a new HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB disk. I made the recovery DVDs, then did a couple other things (including deleting the recovery partition), and finally decided to restore the system. Unfortunately, the recovery process fails; the three DVDs are read (the recovery program says "Reformatting the Windows partition" and "Copying files required to restore the hard drive") but after it finishes reading the 3rd, and the progress bar reaches 100%, it fails with error 0xe0f00013 - Googling it didn't return anything at all. I'm afraid this may be because I deleted the partitions. So, I'm kindly asking for one of the following, in order of preference, from a HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB hard disk or a similar enough one : 1) A dump of the MBR 2) The type and size of all the partitions in a "new" system so I can try to make a partition table resembling the original one. BTW, I thought the recovery DVDs were supposed to work even if the entire disk was wiped - isn't that the case? Thanks!

• Can't boot up computer windows 8 installation

  I wanted to install Windows 8 with a volume partition and when the Windows 8 was installing it rebooted and it gave me an error: The digital signature for this file couldn't be verified. File :windows \system 32\winload.exe error code 0xc0000428. I have tried bootec commands and they didn't seem to fix it. Also my Windows 7 got deleted and I only have to boot with the Windows 8 error, so I can't do anything not even boot to safe mode. I have tried to install Windows 8 from disk later on and it won't let me because it keeps rebooting and starting the installation again, so I took off the disk before it rebooted and it takes me to that error again. Remember that's my only boot option so I'm stuck in the installation disk.

• Trouble upgrading OSX, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

  So I have a intel-based macbook with osx 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?
