  • mint linux, DVD drive keeps randomly being accessed. unsure how to find culprit

    I have a workstation with mint linux 12. It seems like the DVD drive on the machine keeps randomly "activating". By activating it makes noise, the light turns on, and it seems like it is checking if a disk is in it. At first I thought I was being hacked and someone/something was trying to check if I had media in the DVDRom drive. I ruled that out with netstat and rkhunter.   • Is there a real problem in this Retrospect duplicate of my hard drive?

    I recently duplicated my XP "C" drive, using Retrospect. When it finished, there were 6 errors. I checked the log and the 1st error referred to Microsoft Security Essentials\Support\Applications.etl: Appears incomplete. The other 5 errors referred to the Microsoft SQL Server.....\MSSQL\log_...trc: Appears incomplete. Is this a problem that can be solved by reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials? Or wht else?   • GitHub: Are there external tools for managing issues list vs. project backlog

    Recently I posted one of my the projects1 on GitHub and as I was exploring capabilities of the site, I noticed they have a rather decent issue tracking section. I want to use that section as a) other people can report bugs if they'd like and b) other people can see which bugs I'm aware of. However, as others have noted, issues list cannot be prioritized in order to create a project backlog. For now my backlog has been a text file, but I'd like to be able to have it integrated so the same information isn't maintained in different places. Having a fully ordered list, which is something we also practice at work, has been very useful as I can open one file, start with line 1 and fire off 2 or 3 items in one sitting without having to go back to a full issues/stories bucket. GitHub doesn't offer this. What GitHub does offer is a very nice and clean API so issues can easily be exported into anything else. I've searched to see if there are other websites (like Trello) that integrate with GitHub issues, but did not find anything. Does anyone know of such a product, service or offline tool? Those that use GitHub, what is your experience in managing backlog? I kinda hate the idea of manually managing two disconnected lists like some people seem to be doing with Wiki project pages. 1 - are shameless plugs allowed no this site? Searched but didn't find a definite answer. If it's bad practice, STOP and don't read further As a developer I got sick and tired of navigating to same set of folders 30 times a day, so I wrote a little, auto-collapsible utility that gets stuck to the desktop and allows easy access to the folders you constantly use.

  • Executing a C program stored on a windows drive?

    I wrote a simple hello world program but not stored it in Ubuntu's home directory, instead I stored it on one of the Windows drives. (I am using Ubuntu 12.04 alongside of Windows.) When I compiled the program it worked just fine but when I tried to execute it I got an error message "Permission denied". And When I store the program in Ubuntu's home directory I can perfectly compile and execute the program. So please tell me how to overcome this problem??

  • Why is mount -a not mounting fuse drive properly when executed remotely (via Fabric)?

    This is a weird bug and I'm not sure where it's coming from. Here's a quick run down of what I'm doing. I'm trying to mount a FUSE drive to an Amazon EC2 instance running Ubuntu 10.10 using s3fs (FUSE over Amazon). s3fs is compiled from source according to the instructions etc. I've also added an entry to /etc/fstab so that the drive mounts on boot. Here's what /etc/fstab looks like: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0 LABEL=uec-rootfs / ext4 defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 /mnt auto defaults,nobootwait,comment=cloudconfig 0 2 /dev/sda3 none swap sw,comment=cloudconfig 0 0 s3fs#mybucket /mnt/s3/mybucket fuse default_acl=public-read,use_cache=/tmp,allow_other 0 0 So the good news is that this works fine. On reboot the connection mounts correctly. I can also do: $ sudo umount /mnt/s3/mybucket $ sudo mount -a $ mountpoint /mnt/s3/mybucket /mnt/s3/mybucket is a mountpoint Great, right? Well here's the problem. I'm using Fabric to automate the process of building and managing this instance. I noticed I was getting this error message when using Fabric to build s3fs and set up the mount process: mountpoint: /mnt/s3/mybucket: Transport endpoint is not connected I isolated it down the the problem and built a fabric task that reproduces the problem: def remount_s3fs(): sudo("mount -a") Which does: [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] Executing task 'remount_s3fs' [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] sudo: mount -a [And yes, I was sure to unmount it before running this task.] When I check the mount using mountpoint I get: $ mountpoint /mnt/s3/mybucket mountpoint: /mnt/s3/mybucket: Transport endpoint is not connected Done. But if I run sudo mount -a at the command line, it works. Hrm. Here is that fab task output again, this time in full debug mode: [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] Executing task 'remount_s3fs' [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] sudo: sudo -S -p 'sudo password:' /bin/bash -l -c "mount -a" Again, I get that transport endpoint not connected error. I've also tried copying and pasting the exact command run into my ssh session (i.e. sudo -S -p 'sudo password:' /bin/bash -l -c "mount -a") and it works fine. So...that's my problem. Any ideas?

  • How to run a local and external website on same computer with 2 NIC's, 2 Routers and 3 seperate networks?

    Hello and hopefully I can get some answers to my question, though I think I'm making it more complicated for myself than it has to be. My business is a used auto dealership, and I'm in the process of connecting it to the world - via ethernet from the business server [running Xubuntu] to the ISP's ethernet router/modem, so that I can host our own website (no more than 5-10 people probably visiting at any time - mainly paying their bill), as well as set up a web based internal-intranet site - via DD-WRT Router on the 2nd NIC on the business server - that'll be accessed over Wifi from employees personal devices. On the other end of this is trying to offer free wifi to customers that is completely seperate of the 2 mentioned above networks. Quick Rundown: 1. Web Site for Customers to access. I'm going to use no-ip.org for DNS for the moment being, so I'll have a site that customers can access from anywhere in the world at "mybiz.no-ip.org". This will be forwarded to NIC #1 on the server, possibly at an address like "108.69.." as its being provided an IP from the ISP's modem/router, that is from Time Warner, and they allow NO! configuration options. Web Site for employees to access. I'm trying not to use the server too much as a desktop, only for critical situations, so having a backend thats seperate from the front-facing website is critical. This will be the DD-WRT router hardwired into NIC #2 on the server. This WiFi will be password accessible. Public WiFi for customers. The DD-WRT can seperate networks if I'm correct, I just can't seem to understand how to seperate the 2 and still have internet access on both. I've done it before, but the "Public" wifi (with no password set to connect) kept dropping the connection like a problem was happening that I couldn't figure out. So if I could do a little drawing, this is how it would/should possibly look. ISP -- [Sends Public Facing IP of 108.69.*.1/8] -- ISP Modem Router ISP Modem Router (Ethernet Only) -- [Gives Private IP 108.69.*.2] -- Server NIC #1 Server NIC #1 -- [Gives Private IP 108.69.*.3] -- DD-WRT Router DD-WRT Router -- [DHCP Enabled Giving IP's 172.16.0.0/16] -- Employees Network | | --------- [DHCP Enabled Giving IP's 192.168.1.0/24] -- Public WIFI Hope it's not too confusing, but it anyone could give me some good direct tutorials on how to accomplish this, or if YOU know, then it'll be alot of help.   • Is there a current tool to build your boot / partition on hard drive?

    I tried Windows 8 Consumer Preview a couple months ago and it wiped out my partition table... or the boot information. So now the machine cannot boot to anything at all. Is there Ubuntu tools or Linux tool that can fix all the partition and make them boot again? (The partitions have Windows 7 and Vista on them. I run Ubuntu as a VM on Win 7). I tried another tool running on Vista and was able to see the Win 7 partition, except that tool wiped out the Vista boot info later on.

  • How can I automatically delete /tmp folder on shared drive?

    We have a /tmp folder that people use for temporary stuff. It can be anything and any file. We want to make it so that this automatically deletes (or preferably MOVES to another folder on the same shared drive) all the files that haven't been accessed in the last two weeks. This should happen weekly on a schedule that I don't have to manually do. Is there software out there that does this? Anyone have a script possibly? Server 2008R2

  • How to partition my hard drive for Ubuntu use?

    Till now I was windows user. From now on I want to use only Linux. I have 500Gb HDD. How do I partition it properly? I read that there is no right or wrong way, but still, I am confused. I did something and I have primary partition mounted on / (160Gb) which I believe is a OS and 350Gb extended partition of which I have 4Gb of swap and 346Gb mounted on /home. I got used to C:\ and D:\ partitioning, but I don't see file system in that way. I am lost. Where is what? How can I make C:\ partition for OS and D:\ for apps, movies, music, photos. Or what I want is Windows way and I have to get used to Linux way?

  • Mount: "The disk drive for UUID=<uuid for /> is not ready yet or not present."

    I recently did the update from 12.04 to 12.10 on my old Dell Latitude CPx laptop (Pentium III). When I rebooted I got this error message with no response from keyboard input. Below it is says Wait to continue, press S to skip mounting, or M for manual recovery. I also see occasional errors pop up on the screen from mountall and Plymouth. I can still get into Recovery Mode. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

    Is there a recommended filesystem to use when sharing an external drive between the Mac and PC? I understand there are options for Macs to read/write NTFS filesystems and also for PCs to read/write HFS+ filesystems. Is there a preferred filesystem or perhaps a different filesystem that both Mac and PC and read/write? I know I could use FAT32 but some of the files I use are larger than 4 GB (i.e. Virtual Machine images)

People from outside of my network can access my comp fine via its external dyndns.org address, yet when I try to call the public dyndns.org address from inside my network, I get redirected to the internal admin site on the router. How can I make it so that I can see my comp from the public address like everyone else? What kinds of questions should I be asking or looking into? Thanks

    I have an HP laptop with 2 partitions: C: and D:, with windows 7 installed in the C: drive and D: is the Recovery partition. When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Wubi, it only shows the C: drive for installing and not the D: drive where I wanted to format and install ubuntu. So, if I go ahead and install in the C: drive where windows 7 is already installed, would Wubi erase windows 7? Or it will just install Ubuntu as a program in windows?

    I have a 120GB SSD and a 750GB HDD in my computer. My SSD has Windows 7 installed and my HDD has Windows 8 installed. When I boot my computer normally, I boot it to my SSD. I went through the installation process, putting Ubuntu on a separate partition on my HDD. When I restarted my computer, it didn't give me an option to boot to Ubuntu. If it helps, I believe I used ext4 and only set it to '/'. If I want to make Ubuntu bootable from my computer, how would I go about doing that?
