why can't I comment lines in visual mode

I want to comment several lines in my .vimrc, the usual way I do it is :x,ys/^/"/ and x stands for the start line number and y stands for the line number of the last line. I read some post which said in visual mode this task can be done by the following step: 1 Select your lines with VISUAL BLOCK 2 press I to insert before all highlighted lines. 3 type your comment charact , in this case should be " 4 then ESC I fllowed the above steps and met met problems in step 2 . the thing is when I select the lines in Visual mode and press I , vim ( I use version7.2) go back to insert mode and the cursor back to the start of the first line. so if you continue to do the step 3 and step 4, you end up in just inserting " at the start the first line , far from what I want to achieve. so could you point out what's wrong with the recipe ? thanks in advance

Why would a error get thrown inside my try-catch?

I'm pushing a copy of our application over to a new dev server (IIS7) and the application is blowing up on a line inside of a try-catch block. It doesn't happen locally, it actually obey's the rules of a try-catch block, go figure. Any idea why this would be happening? Shouldn't it just be failing silently? Should I call release on these cocoa objective-c variables?

In the code below I'm making a new NSString with alloc and initializing it with the contents of some file. Because I'm calling alloc I know it's my responsibility to call release on the string when I'm done. But what about the variables "lines" and "line"? Since the method "componentsSeparatedByString" does not start with the word "new" or "create" can I assume "lines" will be autoreleased? Same question for "line" since "objectAtIndex" also does not start with "new" or "create". NSString* buffer = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:[fileManager contentsAtPath:@"/foo"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; NSArray* lines = [buffer componentsSeparatedByString:@"\n"]; NSString* line = [lines objectAtIndex:5]; // do something with line [buffer release]; So is the code above okay? How can I stop my application?

I have the main thread from which I start a window using invokeLater. I run my application from command line. So, when application is running I see the window and my command line is "blocked" by the application. I can stop the application either by closing the window (as a result the command line is unblocked) or by typing Ctrl-C in the command line (as a result the window disappear). I wanted to be able to stop the application by clicking on a button in the window of the application. I used setVisible(false) for that. But in this way I can achieve the goal only partially. My window really disappear but the command line is still blocked. So, the software is still running. Well, I assume it's because some other threads are still running. But how can I easily close all these threads (like I do by closing the window of the application manually).

Django + WebKit = Broken pipe

I'm running the Django 1.2 development server and I get these Broken Pipe error messages whenever I load a page from it with Chrome or Safari. My co-worker is getting the error as well when he loads a page from his dev server. We don't have these errors when using Opera or Firefox. Should one use PHP to print all of a page's HTML?

Hi So I've always developed PHP pages like this: <?php goes at the top, ?> goes at the bottom, and all the HTML gets either print()ed or echo()ed out. Is that slower than having non-dynamic html outputted outside of <?php ?> tags? I can't seem to find any info about this. Thanks! --Mala UPDATE: the consesus seems to be on doing it my old way being hard to read. This is not the case if you break your strings up line by line as in: print("\n". "first line goes here\n". "second line goes here\n". "third line"); etc. It actually makes it a lot easier to read than having html outside of php structures, as this way everything is properly indented. That being said, it involves a lot of string concatenation.

As far as I know in unix it's a good practice to always have blank line at the end of file - or to put it in other words: every line should end with \n. While checking my python code with PEP8 I noticed that it also states that there should be \n at end of file: W292 no newline at end of file JCR: The last line should have a newline. What's strange, it conflicts with W391: W391 blank line at end of file JCR: Trailing blank lines are superfluous. Okay: spam(1) W391: spam(1)\n How it should be? Should I have blank line at the end of file or not?

Dynamically created image doesn't show when <img>'s src is refreshed to point to it

Hello, I have a javascript function generateGraph() { ... jQuery.get('chart.php?month='+month+'&year='+year); document.getElementById('graph').src = 'charts/'+month+'_'+year+'.png'; ... } which is called onChange. It basically creates, if not exists, or refreshes if already exists, a PNG image (using the first line above) and supposedly displays the generated image (using the second line above). The first line works, but the second one doesn't. Meaning, the image is generated, but the second line can't display the image, unless the page is reloaded, or if the image being referred to already existed before the page was loaded (meaning the 1st line just "refreshed" the image) Any ideas as to why this is and how to fix it? Thanks much for your help in advance!

Hi there I need to remove line breaks from the beginning of a memo type records. I dont want to use the replace function as it would remove all line breaks from the record which is not desired. Its only the line breaks at the beginning of the field that I am interested in removing. Furthermore, the my records do not always begin with a line break so I cant really use text positioning, the solution would be to look for line break at the beginning instead of always expecting it at the beginning. click here for a sample of what my data looks like any help will be greatly appreciated
