Using LINQ to SQL in ASP.NET MVC2 project

Well I am new to this ORM stuff. We have to create a large project. I read about LINQ to SQL. will it be appropriate to use it in the project of high risk. i found no problem with it personally but the thing is that there will be no going back once started.So i need some feedback from the ORM gurus here at the MSDN. Will entity framework will be better? (I am in doubt about LINK to SQL because I have read and heard negative feedback here and there) I will be using MVC2 as the framework. So please give the feedback about LINQ to SQL in this regard. Q2) Also I am a fan of stored procedure as they are precomputed and fasten up the thing and I have never worked without them.I know that LINQ to SQL support stored procedures but will it be feasible to give up stored procedure seeing the beautiful data access layer generated with little effort as we are also in a need of rapid development. Q3) If some changes to some fields required in the database in LINK to SQL how will the changes be accommodated in the data access layer.

I build Visual Studio 2008 setup Project with MSI build it depends on .NET 3.5. I added Prerequisites like: .NET 3.5, Microsoft office interoperability, VS tools for office System 3.0 Run time, .etc. After that Selected "Download Prerequisite from Same location as my application" in Specify install location for Prerequisite. Build the setup. I can find mysetup.msi in Release directory. In new Machine I started fresh installation of my application... While Clicking the mySetup.msi. Dialog shows like this " This Setup Requires .NET framework 3.5 , Please install .NET setup then run this setup, .NET Framework can be obtained from web Do you want to do that now?" it gives "yes" no option - if I press YES it goes microsoft website. How can avoid it ? I wanted setup take .NET Framework to be installed from same location where I put all setup files including mysetup.msi ? In case of Quite installation cmd /c "msiexec /package mysetup.msi /quiet /log install.log" ..in log I can see only half way through installtion then error Property(S): HideFatalErrorForm = TRUE MSI (s) (D0:24) [00:07:08:015]: Product: my product-- Installation failed. === Logging stopped: 3/23/2010 0:07:08 === so how can complete the installation without user intervention and without error using VS2008 setup project thanks for all the help in advance for any input.

MS SQL 2008, join or no join?

Just a small question regarding joins. I have a table with around 30 fields and i was thinking about making a second table to store 10 of those fields. Then i would just join them in with the main data. The 10 fields that i was planning to store in a second table does not get queried directly, it's just some settings for the data in the first table. Something like: Table 1 Id Data1 Data2 Data3 etc ... Table 2 Id (same id as table one) Settings1 Settings2 Settings3 Is this a bad solution? Should i just use 1 table? How much performance inpact does it have? All entries in table 1 would also then have an entry in table 2. Small update is in order. Most of the Data fields are of the type varchar and 2 of them are of the type text. How is indexing treated? My plan is to index 2 data fields, email (varchar 50) and author (varchar 20). And yes, all records in Table 1 will have a record in Table 2. Most of the settings fields are of the bit type, around 80%. The rest is a mix between int and varchar. The varchars can be null.

Rails - MS-SQL Server problems (unixODBC, FreeTDS) on Mac 10.6

Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct. How to Transform a user's search string into a MS SQL Full-Text Search Phrase

I've search for answers for this and I can't seem to find an answer to what should be somewhat simple. This is related to another question I asked, but it's different. What's the best way to take a user's search phrase and throw it into a CONTAINSTABLE(table, column, @phrase, topN ) phrase? Say, for example the user inputs: Books by "Dr. Seuss" What's the best way to turn that into something that will return results in my ContainsTAble() phrase? I was previously parsing the search phrase and writing something like ISABOUT("Books" WEIGHT(1.0), "by" WEIGHT(0.9), "Dr. Seuss" WEIGHT(0.8)) as my @phrase but ISABOUT seems to be returning odd results... especially when one word searches are entered. Any Ideas?

Schema compare with MS Data Tools in VS2008

When performing a schema compare having db_owner rights on the target database results in the following error: The user does not have permission to perform this action. Using the SQL Server Profiler I figured out this error occurs executing a query targeting the master db view: [sys].[dm_database_encryption_keys] While specifically ignoring all object types but Tables one would presume the SQL Compare doesn't need access to the db encryption keys. Also note: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vstsdb/thread/c11a5f8a-b9cc-454f-ba77-e1c69141d64b/ One solution would be to GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE to the db user, but in my case I'm not hosting the database services and won't get the rights to the server state. Also tried excluding DatabaseEncryptionKey element in the compare file. <PropertyElementName> <Name>Microsoft.Data.Schema.Sql.SchemaModel.SqlServer.ISql100DatabaseEncryptionKey</Name> <Value>ExcludedType</Value> </PropertyElementName> Anyone has an workaround this?

MS Chart in WPF, Setting the DataSource is not creating the Series

Hi All, Here I am trying to assign the datasource (using same code given in the sample application) and create a graph, only difference is i am doing it in WPF WindowsFormsHost. due to some reason the datasource is not being assigned properly and i am not able to see the series ("Series 1") being created. wired thing is that it is working in the Windows Forms application but not in the WPF one. am i missing something and can somebody help me? How to arrange models, views, controllers in a new Kohana 3 project

I'm looking at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. Example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about learning the framework soon enough, I'm a bit at a loss on how to arrange a healthy code base from the start - i.e. how to split up controllers, how to name them, and how to separate the functionality into the appropriate models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a main businesses table. Businesses can be listed by category and by street name. Each business has a detail page. Business owners can log in and edit their business's entry. Businesses can post offers into an offers table. I know this is pretty vague, I'll be more than happy to go into more detail on request. Supposing I have all the basic functionality worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended: Do you know real-life, publicly accessible examples of applications built on Kohana 3 where I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know application structuring HOWTOs or best practices for Kohana 3 not mentioned in the user guide and the inofficial Wiki? Have you built something similar and could give me some recommendations?

I've downloaded the free trial but it's a little fancier than I expected. I'm not a graphic designer and can't use photoshop to save my life, however I do have images provided by a graphic designer to use for this application. How to parse out MS Word formatting?

I have a rich html textbox on my asp.net mvc application. The rich html textbox is some jquery plugin that I use and has basic stuff like bold,underline and etc. Now I am anticipating that people will maybe write something in word and then copy and paste it into my textbox. However I limit the number of characters a person can have. This is a test to show how much formatting gets made. • One • Two • Three So I wrote that above(it does not copy to well into here). Basically it is a line of text and "how" is bold and the "one,two,three" are a bullet list. Word says it is 70 characters long with spacing. Exception on apache cxf when calling JaxWsProxyFactoryBean.create() (in maven project)

I wrote a Client that uses a Webservice. Works well in a seperate project. But when I try to use it in my maven project, it fails. MS SQL Database with clustered GUID PKs - switch clustered index or switch to sequential (comb) GUID

We have a database in which all the PKs are GUIDs, and most of the PKs are also the clustered index for the table. We know that this is bad (due to the random nature of GUIDs). So, it seems there are basically two options here (short of throwing out GUIDs as PKs altogether, which we cannot do (at least not at this time)). We could change the GUID generation algorithm to e.g. the one that NHibernate uses, as detailed in this post, or we could, for the tables that are under the heaviest use, change to a different clustered index, e.g. an IDENTITY column, and keep the "random" GUIDs as PKs. Is it possible to give any general recommendations in such a scenario? The application in question has 500+ tables, the largest one presently at about 1,5 million rows, a few tables around 500 000 rows, and the rest significantly lower (most of them well below 10K). Furthermore, the application is installed at several customer sites already, so we have to take any possible negative effects for existing customer into consideration. Thanks!
