  • Will MyISAM type tables work better than InnoDB for large numbers of columns?

    - by Ethan
I have a MySQL InnoDB table with 238 columns. 56 of them are TEXT type, 27 are VARCHAR(255). I am getting MySQL error 139 when users insert data sometimes. After research I found that I'm probably running into InnoDB row size/column size/column count limitations. (I'm putting it that way because the specific limits among those three things are interdependent.) Docs on InnoDB give an idea of the limits. If I switch this table to MyISAM is it likely to solve the problem? I understand the maximum row size of 65,535 bytes. I think I'm hitting InnoDB's additional 8000 byte limit somehow. Switching to PostgreSQL is also a remote option, but would take much longer.

  • Why does an onclick property set with setAttribute fail to work in IE?

    - by Aeon
    Ran into this problem today, posting in case someone else has the same issue. var execBtn = document.createElement('input'); execBtn.setAttribute("type", "button"); execBtn.setAttribute("id", "execBtn"); execBtn.setAttribute("value", "Execute"); execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", "runCommand();"); Turns out to get IE to run an onclick on a dynamically generated element, we can't use setAttribute. Instead, we need to set the onclick property on the object with an anonymous function wrapping the code we want to run. execBtn.onclick = function() { runCommand() }; BAD IDEAS: You can do execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", function() { runCommand() }); but it will break in IE in non-standards mode according to @scunliffe. You can't do this at all execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", runCommand() ); because it executes immediately, and sets the result of runCommand() to be the onClick attribute value, nor can you do execBtn.setAttribute("onclick", runCommand);

  • How to apply coding methodologies and practices to non-coding work?

    - by Dan
I can talk for hours about best-practice, source control, change management, feature tracking, development cycles and the lot, but most of what I've learnt or read seems to apply to nuts-and-bolts programming of compiled applications. You know, ASCII files that gets turned into 1s and 0s. How does one apply the same discipline and wisdom to working in environments that are point-and-click, config-centric. I'm thinking of CMSs and specifically, my current 9 to 5, SharePoint. Traditional practices of source control, dev-staging-production seem to break down since we're not working with code, and the live environment changes with user input. So to sum up a rather lengthy question, what works in a no-code environment?

  • How do I get tooltips to work in MFC for menus?

    - by frungash
I have a dlg box as the main window. After a few searches on the we I tried downloading and running the sample the source here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc164067.aspx I get a compile error: error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'UINT (__thiscall CStaticLink::* )(CPoint)' to 'LRESULT (__thiscall CWnd::* )(CPoint)' 1 Cast from base to derived requires dynamic_cast or static_cast (VS 2008) The tooltips functionality seems to be a bit of a challenge. Any suggestions on how to get this working are much appreciated.

  • MySQL is returning an "column ambiguous" error when it used to work before I upgraded...

    - by Ronedog
I recently upgraded MySQL to 5.1.41. Before the upgrade the following SQL worked (or at least I thought I remembered it working...it has been a few weeks since designing this...). Now the SQL gives me an error stating that the "archived" column is ambiguous. How can I write this differently, or is there a different problem I'm not aware of? I simply want to return the "unit_id", "lease_count" (stored in another table with a unit_id that should correspond with the "a.unit_id"), and "lease_archived_count (stored in another table with a unit_id that should correspond with the "a.unit_id"). SELECT a.unit_id, (SELECT count(*) FROM o_leases WHERE unit_id = a.unit_id AND archived = 0) as lease_count, (SELECT count(*) FROM o_leases WHERE unit_id = a.unit_id AND archived = 1) as lease_archive_count FROM p_unit a, properties b, portfolio c WHERE a.property_id = b.properties_id AND b.portfolio_id = c.portfolio_id AND a.archived = 0 Thanks for your help.

  • Why an input button created dynamically through a literal tag doesn't work ?

    - by user284523
    I have created button 2 below: <input id="Button1" type="button" value="Stop" onclick="alert('hello world');"/> <input id="Button2" type="button" value="button" OnClik="alert('hello world');"/> using a litteral tag on page load like this: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Literal1.Text = "<input id=\"Button2\" type=\"button\" value=\"button\" OnClik=\"alert('hello world');\"/>"; } Incredibly when testing in browser, click on button 1 works, not click on button 2 whereas the codes are the same ! Am I missing something ?

  • How do I host a Google gadget? How does it work?

    - by sintaloo
I just spent 5 hours by checking Google gadgets websites and FAQs, but I still have no idea how to host a gadget. What I've figured from reading the Google documentation: I can write gadgets with XML, JavaScript etc.. Gadgets can be added to iGoogle etc.. Google can host the gadgets for you. Gadgets can be hosted anywhere else??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the JavaScript framework and use it. With Google gadgets, I can not find a download link for a framework. Why? Does Google provide its framework? If not, why does the documentation indicate that gadgets can be hosted anywhere? I am totally confused. A brief explanation or some helpful links are very welcome! Thanks a lot!!!

  • LINQ: why does this query not work on an ArrayList?

    - by Benny
public static ArrayList GetStudentAsArrayList() { ArrayList students = new ArrayList { new Student() { RollNumber = 1,Name ="Alex " , Section = 1 ,HostelNumber=1 }, new Student() { RollNumber = 2,Name ="Jonty " , Section = 2 ,HostelNumber=2 } }; return students; } The following code doesn't compile. The error is ArrayList is not IEnumerable ArrayList lstStudents = GetStudentAsArrayList(); var res = from r in lstStudents select r; This compiles: ArrayList lstStudents = GetStudentAsArrayList(); var res = from Student r in lstStudents select r; Can anybody explain what the difference is between these two snippets? Why the second works?

  • Would this method work to scale out SQL queries?

    - by David
I have a database containing a single huge table. At the moment a query can take anything from 10 to 20 minutes and I need that to go down to 10 seconds. I have spent months trying different products like GridSQL. GridSQL works fine, but is using its own parser which does not have all the needed features. I have also optimized my database in various ways without getting the speedup I need. I have a theory on how one could scale out queries, meaning that I utilize several nodes to run a single query in parallel. The idea is to take an incoming SQL query and simply run it exactly like it is on all the nodes. When the results are returned to a coordinator node, the same query is run on the union of the resultsets. I realize that an aggregate function like average need to be rewritten into a count and sum to the nodes and that the coordinator divides the sum of the sums with the sum of the counts to get the average. What kinds of problems could not easily be solved using this model. I believe one issue would be the count distinct function. Edit: I am getting so many nice suggestions, but none have addressed the method.

  • How the simples GUI countdown is supposed to work?

    - by Roman
I am trying to write the simples GUI countdown. I found in Internet some code but it is already too fancy for me. I am trying to keep it as simple as possible. So, I just want to have a window saying "You have 10 second left". The number of second should decrease every second from 10 to 0. I wrote a code. And I think I am close to the working solution. But I still missing something. Could you pleas help me to find out what is wrong? Here is my code: import javax.swing.*; public class Countdown { static JLabel label; // Method which defines the appearance of the window. private static void showGUI() { JFrame frame = new JFrame("Simple Countdown"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); JLabel label = new JLabel("Some Text"); frame.add(label); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } // Define a new thread in which the countdown is counting down. static Thread counter = new Thread() { public void run() { for (int i=10; i>0; i=i-1) { updateGUI(i,label); try {Thread.sleep(1000);} catch(InterruptedException e) {}; } } }; // A method which updates GUI (sets a new value of JLabel). private static void updateGUI(final int i, final JLabel label) { SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable(i,label) { public Runnable(int i, JLabel label) { this.i = i; this.label = label; } public void run() { label.setText("You have " + i + " seconds."); } }); } // The main method (entry point). public static void main(String[] args) { javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { showGUI(); //counter.start(); } }); //counter.start(); } } And I have several concrete question about this code: Where should I place the counter.start();? (In my code I put it on 2 places. Which one is correct?) Why compiler complains about the constructor for Runnable? It says that I have an invalid method declaration and I need to specify the returned type. ADDED: I made the suggested corrections. And then I execute the code and get: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException at Worker.run(Worker.java:12) In the Worker.java in the line 12 I have: label.setText("You have " + i + " seconds.");.

  • Why does the data binding in this validation example work?

    - by MartyIX
I'm wondering how exactly the XAML sample (MSDN sample) works: <Style x:Key="textBoxInError" TargetType="{x:Type TextBox}"> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="Validation.HasError" Value="true"> <Setter Property="ToolTip" Value="{Binding RelativeSource={x:Static RelativeSource.Self}, Path=(Validation.Errors)[0].ErrorContent}"/> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> Questions: (Validation.Errors)[0].ErrorContent - Is this code somehow checked by WPF? Because Validation.Errors may be an empty collection and in ordinary C# code this code may throw an exception. If this data-binding returns null for valid input - the null value is then casted to empty string (in a text control for example)? The index 0 corresponds to the first error message. How can I return more error messages from Validate method? Thank you for responses!

  • How can I set up an editor to work with Git on Windows?

    - by Patrick McElhaney
I'm trying out Git on Windows. I got to the point of trying "git commit" and I got this error: Terminal is dumb but no VISUAL nor EDITOR defined. Please supply the message using either -m or -F option. So I figured out I need to have an environment variable called EDITOR. No problem. I set it to point to Notepad. That worked, almost. The default commit message opens in Notepad. But Notepad doesn't support bare line feeds. I went out and got Notepad++. But I can't figure out how to get Notepad++ set up as the %EDITOR% in such a way that it works with Git as expected. I'm not married to Notepad++. At this point I couldn't care less what editor I use. I just want to be able to type my commit messages without using -m. So, for those of you using Git on Windows: What (free) tool do you use to edit your commit message, and what do you get when you type echo %EDITOR% at the command prompt?

  • Why does operator<< not work with something returned by operator-?

  • Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

    - by ed.talmadge
I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this? Here is the application canvas URL: http://apps.facebook.com/russian_girls/

  • Can a 32-bit RHEL4 userland work with a 64-bit kernel?

    - by James
Is there a way to change an i386 RHEL4 machine to run an amd64 kernel, but ensure that it still builds software into same i386 binaries? On Debian this seems quite straightforward: just install an amd64 kernel (worst case, build one like this guy: http://www.debian-administration.org/users/jonesy/weblog/1) and prefix everything with "linux32". Then everything that considers uname -m will be unchanged, I just need to handle the few cases that consider uname -r. What is the Red Hat equivalent? Is the only way a full 64-bit installation on another disk and then chrooting back to the 32-bit system before anyone builds anything? (Even the best examples of that seem to be Debian-based.) Background: We make a large system that runs on (a variant of) i386 RHEL4. However, some of the larger RHEL build machines now have enough RAM that they might benefit from going 64-bit (for the kernel and maybe some of the bigger build steps). Our build system doesn't support cross-compilation.

  • Sockets, Threads and Services in android, how to make them work together ?

    - by Spredzy
    Hi all, I am facing a probleme with threads and sockets I cant figure it out, if someone can help me please i would really appreciate. There are the facts : I have a service class NetworkService, inside this class I have a Socket attribute. I would like it be at the state of connected for the whole lifecycle of the service. To connect the socket I do it in a thread, so if the server has to timeout, it would not block my UI thread. Problem is, into the thread where I connect my socket everything is fine, it is connected and I can talk to my server, once this thread is over and I try to reuse the socket, in another thread, I have the error message Socket is not connected. Questions are : - Is the socket automatically disconnected at the end of the thread? - Is their anyway we can pass back a value from a called thread to the caller ? Thanks a lot, Here is my code public class NetworkService extends Service { private Socket mSocket = new Socket(); private void _connectSocket(String addr, int port) { Runnable connect = new connectSocket(this.mSocket, addr, port); new Thread(connect).start(); } private void _authentification() { Runnable auth = new authentification(); new Thread(auth).start(); } private INetwork.Stub mBinder = new INetwork.Stub() { @Override public int doConnect(String addr, int port) throws RemoteException { _connectSocket(addr, port); _authentification(); return 0; } }; class connectSocket implements Runnable { String addrSocket; int portSocket; int TIMEOUT=5000; public connectSocket(String addr, int port) { addrSocket = addr; portSocket = port; } @Override public void run() { SocketAddress socketAddress = new InetSocketAddress(addrSocket, portSocket); try { mSocket.connect(socketAddress, TIMEOUT); PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(mSocket.getOutputStream(), true); out.println("test42"); Log.i("connectSocket()", "Connection Succesful"); } catch (IOException e) { Log.e("connectSocket()", e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } } } class authentification implements Runnable { private String constructFirstConnectQuery() { String query = "toto"; return query; } @Override public void run() { BufferedReader in; PrintWriter out; String line = ""; try { in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(mSocket.getInputStream())); out = new PrintWriter(mSocket.getOutputStream(), true); out.println(constructFirstConnectQuery()); while (mSocket.isConnected()) { line = in.readLine(); Log.e("LINE", "[Current]- " + line); } } catch (IOException e) {e.printStackTrace();} } }

  • Flash Buttons Don't Work: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null objec

    - by goldenfeelings
I've read through several threads about this error, but haven't been able to apply it to figure out my situation... My flash file is an approx 5 second animation. Then, the last keyframe of each layer (frame #133) has a button in it. My flash file should stop on this last key frame, and you should be able to click on any of the 6 buttons to navigate to another html page in my website. Here is the Action Script that I have applied to the frame in which the buttons exist (on a separate layer, see screenshot at: http://www.footprintsfamilyphoto.com/wp-content/themes/Footprints/images/flash_buttonissue.jpg stop (); function babieschildren(event:MouseEvent):void { trace("babies children method was called!!!"); var targetURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.footprintsfamilyphoto.com/portfolio/babies-children"); navigateToURL(targetURL, "_self"); } bc_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, babieschildren); bc_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, babieschildren); function fams(event:MouseEvent):void { trace("families method was called!!!"); var targetURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.footprintsfamilyphoto.com/portfolio/families"); navigateToURL(targetURL, "_self"); } f_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fams); f_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fams); function couplesweddings(event:MouseEvent):void { trace("couples weddings method was called!!!"); var targetURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.footprintsfamilyphoto.com/portfolio/couples-weddings"); navigateToURL(targetURL, "_self"); } cw_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, couplesweddings); cw_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, couplesweddings); When I test the movie, I get this error in the output box: "TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference." The test movie does stop on the appropriate frame, but the buttons don't do anything (no URL is opened, and the trace statements don't show up in the output box when the buttons are clicked on the test movie). You can view the .swf file here: www.footprintsfamilyphoto.com/portfolio I'm confident that all 6 buttons do exist in the appropriate frame (frame 133), so I don't think that's what's causing the 1009 error. I also tried deleting each of the three function/addEventListener sections one at a time and testing, and I still got the 1009 error every time. If I delete ALL of the action script except for the "stop ()" line, then I do NOT get the 1009 error. Any ideas?? I'm very new to Flash, so if I haven't clarified something that I need to, let me know!

  • Concatenation of files using ffmpeg does not work as I expected. Why?

    - by Peter Olson
    I execute the following command line for ffmpeg.exe -i C:\Beema\video-source\DO_U_BEEMA176x144short.avi -i C:\Beema\video-source\DO_U_BEEMA176x144short.avi -i C:\Beema\temp\9016730-51056331-stitcheds.avi -i C:\Beema\video-source\GOTTA_BEEMA176x144short.avi -y -ac 1 -r 24 -b 25K C:\Beema\video-out\9a062fb6-d448-48fe-b006-a85d51adf8a1.mpg The output file in video-out ends up having a single copy of DO_U_BEEMA. I do not understand why ffmpeg is not concatenating. Any help is dramatically appreciated,

  • VirtualHosting doesn't work. Logs me in through previous session

    - by Pablo
When I log in with one browser session, I have to log in, but when I open another session it has automatically logged me in (as if I've picked up session 1), this does not happen if I use http://192.168.0.9:9070 It forces me to log in each time. So I know the application is working, it's just the proxy server that seems to apply the loging to each session (from http://icerap.limeo.com). # ************************************************************************ # Start of My stuff <<<------------------------------------------------------ # ************************************************************************ #<Proxy *> #Order Deny,Allow #Deny from all #Allow from 192.168.0 #</Proxy> # blog <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName icerap.limeo.com ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.9:9070/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.9:9070/ </VirtualHost> # www <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName helpdesk.limeo.com ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.9:9055/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.9:9055/ </VirtualHost> # blog <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName IceCake.limeo.com ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.9:9000/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.9:9000/ </VirtualHost> # End of Limeo stuff <<<------------------------------------------------------ # ************************************************************************

  • Creating a context in custom shoulda macro does not work.

    - by Honza
I have a custom should macro in my test_helper.rb which looks like this. def self.should_require_login(actions = [:index]) if (actions.is_a? Symbol) actions = [actions] end context "without user" do actions.each do |action| should "redirect #{action.to_s} away" do get action assert_redirected_to login_path end end end if block_given? context "active user logged in" do setup do @user = Factory.create(:user) @user.register! @user.activate! login_as(@user) end yield end end end I would like to use it like this: should_require_login(:protected_action) do should "do something" do ... end end And I am expecting the "do something" test to run in the "active user logged in" context, but the test executes in the top context, like the "active user logged in" context never existed and I fail to see the reason why.
