• IIS 7.0 Web Deploy authentication fails after changing Windows password... help?

  I have a very basic Windows 2008 R2 Web Server running IIS 7.0. This is just a test/practice server, so I enabled Web Deployment using Windows Authentication. All was well and I was able to deploy easily from VS 2010 using the Administrator account credentials. After changing the Administrator account password, I get the following error when trying to deploy from Visual Studio (using the new password, of course): Error 1 Web deployment task failed... ...An unsupported response was received. The response header 'MSDeploy.Response' was '' but 'v1' was expected. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. If I change the Administrator password back to the original one and try to publish using it everything works fine again. So what am I missing? Am I supposed to do something in IIS after changing the password? Thanks!

• Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here. • Best book for learning linux shell scripting?

  I normally works on Windows machines but on some occasions I do switch to development on linux. And my most recent project will be written entirely on a certain linix platforms (not the standard Apache/MySQL/PHP setup). So I thought it would pay to learn to write some linux automation script now. I can get around the system, start/stop services, compile/install stuffs fine. Those are probably basic drills for a programmer. But if, for example, I wanted to deploy a certain application automatically to a newly minted linux machine every month I'd love to know how to do it. So if I wanted to learn serious linux shell scripting, what book should I be reading? Thanks

  I am planning to migrate from Mac OS X and Windows to either a Unix or Linux distribution, i.e. I am a Linux/Unix beginner. Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? What are simple IDEs for Debian and gNewSense?

• DNSCurve vs DNSSEC

  Can someone informed, please give a lengthy reply about the differences and advantages/disadvantages of both approaches? I am not a DNS expert, not a programmer. I have a decent basic understanding of DNS, and enough knowledge to understand how things like the kaminsky bug work. From what I understand, DNSCurve has stronger encryption, is far simpler to setup, and an altogether better solution. DNSSEC is needlessly complicated and uses breakable encryption, however it provides end to end security, something DNSCurve does not. However, many of the articles I have read have seemed to indicate that end to end security is of little use or makes no difference. So which is true? Which is the better solution, or what are the disadvantages/advantages of each? edit: I would appreciate if someone could explain what is gained by encrypting the message contents, when the goal is authentication rather than confidentiality. • How do I install an HP home-use printer on Windows Home Server (Windows Server 2003)

  I have an HP DeskJet F4210 printer that I would like to share on my network via Windows Home Server. Unfortunately, the driver installation checks for supported OS's, detects Home Server as Windows Server 2003 and exits. The driver install supports WinXP, W2k, Vista, and Win98SE. In theory, drivers for XP or Windows 2000 should work fine with Home Server. When using the "Install Printer" tool in Home Server I am only able to select .inf files (there are serveral on the install media) but the driver folders for XP and 2000 have .sys and .dll files. How can I bypass HP's short-sighted install program and get this printer up and running on Home server? I'll be happy with basic print functionality and will save the task of enabling scanning for another time.

  How do you set up a Windows Vista Home Basic desktop (wired) and a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop (wifi) on a home network so that they can share files and the printers connected to the desktop? The Win7 laptop may also be used on other networks. I'm going to have to set this up for my parents when I visit shortly. I currently use XP and am not really familiar with Vista or Win7 network setup. Would it be difficult to share between the Vista and Win7 machines and and XP machine? If not, how to add that?

  Hi, I'm interested in booting-off-flash (i.e. like livecd) for more secure online banking at home. -I like system rescue CD, but AFAIK it doesn't have the wifi drivers. (These are convenient) -ubuntu live cd has the wi-fi drivers, but also has a lot of stuff I don't need -I'd like a way to save some basic config settings (e.g. wifi SSID and passphrase), so that wifi works upon startup, i.e. without having to re-enter the settings. • Win7 glass-like Aero feature - unable to enable

  I have a 4 months old PC with Win7 Home Premium x64. Windows Experience Index is 5.4. Intel i5 processor 6GB memory nVidia GT220 video card. During games, Windows reported shortage of system resources, so switched the desktop back to "Windows 7 Basic" desktop theme. After game-over, I could switch back to the normal theme and enjoy all Aero eye-candies. However, lately the glass-like window transparency feature got disabled, and I found no ways to enable it again. There is a Troubleshouting option in Control Panel saying: "Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects". If I launch that, it does not find anything. Event viewer is full with the following warnings: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention. Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded. Taskbar, window borders, etc, none of the other transparent features work, and I cannot turn them on. Any thoughts?

  Hi all, I am trying to learn how to implement virtual interfaces using the Tap driver. So far my understanding is that using the tap driver I can create a virtual interface and then have a userspace program attach to this interface to analyse the data coming into this device. Now what if I attach a cisco switch to my LAN interface using a TRUNK link, forward all the packets coming into the LAN interface to the virtual tap interface and then in my program attached to this interface do some coding to analyze the vlan tag in the packet and only allow certain vlans to be forwarded to the WAN interface ? Does this sound plausible or is there is flaw in my basic understanding ? Thanks for the help! ankit

• Ububtu server 12.04 auto installation freezes at kickseeding running if ks.cfg has post scripts

  I'm trying to make a custom Ubuntu Server iso file. Kickstart file (ks.cfg) runs smooth when there is no %post in the file and Ubuntu installs correctly with ks configuration. Installation finishes installing base, apt, grub and It echos: Kickseed Running... and it freezes @ 0% I thought may be apt-get update doesnt work in ks file, I tried to install other apps like apache2 but no luck I have created dozen iso images and installed them in Virtual Box.I have been googling for 3 days and checked out ubuntu forums but haven't figured out the issue. • Trying to configure domain-based access via htaccess file.

  I've created an account with no-ip.com that registers my ip with a subdomain of their service. When I do an nslookup, I see that the service is working and that my domain is being shown. Now I want to provide access to that subdomain on the admin site of our server which is protected by htaccess IP restrictions. When I try to add the new domain to my script it does not work. Am I doing something wrong?   Problem: we've grown to the point where we need a real DBA. Real DBAs are hard to find. Possible solution: I know someone with extensive experience (currently working on MSSQL) who is looking for a new DBA job. He might be willing to consider working for a MySQL shop (I haven't asked). Snag: I don't know to what extent MSSQL DBA skills map to MySQL DBA skills. I'm a developer, so I know enough about MySQL to develop apps which use it (including the basic performance-tuning, index selection, etc.), do schema design, and perform simple utility tasks (backup with mysqldump, scripting, etc.). I don't know anything about MSSQL. Nor do I actually know much about the boundaries of the DBA role. Can anyone with more experience - perhaps as a DBA - weigh in on this? Are there enough similarities between MSSQL and MySQL that it's worth asking a MSSQL DBA if he'd be interested in applying for a MySQL position?

  I have a VPS and a domain name registered with the provider. When I enter www.example.com my site is displayed correctly, but entering example.com does not work. I am able to ping www.example.com. I added the following line to my apache2 default vhosts file: ServerName example.com ServerAlias www.example.com But this did not work. The VPS is a Debian5 OS. Any ideas? Note: There is no option via a provided control panel to add this, it's a basic package I purchased I know this post answers it but there are no extra comments and I'd like to know if it's the best way: way to redirect page to www using virtual host configuration in sites-available for apache2?   While searching for a secure dns server I came across the NSD project. I was really impressed by what seemed to me the best option out there that's open source. One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really not beginner friendly. I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. I need to have multiple sites on this CentOS server I've recently got my hands on. They also need to receive email. • I get Get-WmiObject : Generic Failure error on an XP Machine. What needs to be done to get rid of this?

  I am trying make an uninstall app which removes an application X on a regular basis. The starting point to access applications installed in a Windows machine is through retrieving them from a WMI Class called Win32_Product. But when I run the basic command like this, I get the below error. I have searched technet and SO, but either their workarounds did not work for me or were too technical in detail which did not make sense to me. Please help.   Are there any distributions of fully built Message Brokers that are initially based off of ZeroMQ? I had thought that downloading/installing ZeroMQ would give me such, not just a handful of procedures for rolling me own. Currently we use ActiveMQ, but it is a miserable pain to configure, so I'd rather slim down the profile, unfortunately I learned that ZeroMQ was not a one step solution to achieving that goal. Alternatives are ok, but I'd prefer something less overly verbose in configuration than ActiveMQ's ludicrous amounts of Java configuration. Broker config + Java Logger Config + many other intricacies that I don't wish to deal with. (Read: Preferably not Java based in the first place.) I'm looking for reliable, basic functionality described by JMS brokers. Topics, Queues, Message Persistence, etc.

• IIS6 Virtual Directory 500 Error on Remote Share

  We have our servers at the server farm in a domain. Let's call it LIVE. Our developer computers live in a completely separate corporate domain, miles and miles away. Let's call it CORP. We have a large central storage unit (unix) that houses images and other media needed by many webservers in the server farm. The IIS application pools run as (let's say) LIVE\MediaUser and use those credentials to connect to a central storage share as a virtual directory, retrieve the images, and serve them as if they were local on each server. The problem is in development. On my development machine. I log in as CORP\MyName. My IIS 6 application pool runs as Network Service. I can't run it as a user from the LIVE domain because my machine isn't (and can not be) joined to that domain. I try to create a virtual directory, point it to the same network directory, click Connect As, uncheck the "Always use the authenticated user's credentials when validating access to the network directory" checkbox so that I can enter the login info, enter the credentails for LIVE\MediaUser, click OK, verify the password, etc. This doesn't work. I get "HTTP Error 500 - Internal server error" from IIS. The IIS log file reports sc-status = 500, sc-substatus = 16, and sc-win32-status = 1326. The documentation says this means "UNC authorization credentials are incorrect" and the Win32 status means "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." This would be all and good if it were anywhere close to accurate. I double- and trouble-checked it. Tried multiple known good logins. The IIS manager allows me to view the file tree in its window, it's only the browser that kicks me out. I even tried going to the virtual directory's Directory Security tab, and under Authentication and Access Control, I tried using the same LIVE domain username for the anonymous access credential. No luck. I'm not trying to run any ASP, ASP.NET, or other dynamic anything out of the virtual directory. I just want IIS to be able to load static images, css, and js files. If anyone has some bright ideas I would be most appreciative!

• Robocopy to a drive connected to a wlan router fails

  I have a wireless router and an USB hard drive connected to it. Basic file access on the command line and Explorer works flawlessly after having set up some options on the router and mapping to some folders with net use k: \\ROUTER\Folder1 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes net use n: \\ROUTER\Folder2 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes Robocopy (and using SyncToy for that matter) to a network drive however fails: robocopy c:\Files k:\Backup /MIR /Z gives There is not enough space on the disk. 2010/01/05 09:52:11 ERROR 112 (0x00000070) Accessing Destination Directory N:\ Waiting 30 seconds... The error message is misleading: there is plenty of space on the disk and the folders I'm copying are small. The router is an ASUS WL-500gp with a standard firmware. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to explain what is causing the problem and, if possible, how to fix it.

• Custom PHPINIDir setting in VirtualHost affecting other VirtualHosts

  One of the clients requested a personal php.ini configuration for his website, so I have set his VirtualHost as follows: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/home/alex/www.domain.tld" ServerName www.domain.tld AssignUserID alex alex PHPINIDir /home/alex/php.ini </VirtualHost> The client created php.ini file under /home/alex/ which contains only this setting: session.save_path = "/home/alex/.php_sessions/" Afterall he started to complaint that he sees all other session files generated by other clients' websites. After doing some basic troubleshooting, I realized, that his php.ini settings are affecting all websites specified in the httpd-vhosts.conf. Question is why? Since PHPINIDir is only specified inside one specific VirtualHost?

• Open source Distributed computing tool

  I want to set up distributed computing on my Local Area Network consisting a bunch of PCs. Say for the time being each one has the same OS - Windows 7. Is there any opensource tool available so that I can share the resources of these PCs over the LAN and increase the speed of my applications and the memory space. I know that if its a graphics intensive application then, it is not very practical, because the speed of LAN is much slower than Graphics processors. But I only want to share general applications, some basic softwares, Programming language IDEs etc. Can anyone shed some light on it? Thanks in Advance..
